Finding the Spark (Pathfinder 1E Quest)

Arc 7 Post 4: Motley Malice
Motley Malice

10th of Lamashan 4707 A.R. (Absalom Reckoning)

The Hydra's Fang launches her ship's boats called launches by some incomprehensible twist of Taldan grammar which makes you morally certain it can't be that related to the Old Tongue, your ancestors would have been more sensible about words even as Mina fades from sight alongside Cob who gives a worrying giggle as he does so. For your part it's enough to pull the shadow close and over it a veil against unwelcome eyes. The first boat is filled with a motley assortment of eight, the second has only six though the fellow at the front must be the leader from the distance he maintains from the others as well as the cut of his doublet. True you might not be an expert of Chelish fashion, but after almost a month in Augustana you can tell fine weave from rough and expensive blue die from common 'earthy' colors. His hair though windswept had certainly seen its share of combs, though judging from how many times he scratches at it you guess the beard is a new development.

"If those are Chelish Marines, I'm a crab's own sister," Captain Mel says from your left, none too softly, though you doubt she could be heard over the sound of waves and wind.

You give an ambivalent nod in answer, turning back to her, to Gorok, his fellow iruxi and... Where had the mage gone? In the time it had taken you to mark the captain, Gavhaul had entirely vanished among the sailors, though unless he has some spell to conjure clothes or wear illusion he has to be one of the 'sailors' in oiled cloaks.

"Darsielle Du Moire, Senior Captain of Her Infernal Majesty's Navy, lower your arms and prepare for inspection and we won't have any trouble," the man in blue says as he reaches for the rope with easy skill and a smile just as easy. "You will I hope forgive the disheveled company, such is the nature of men doing the scut-work that keeps the empire's backside polished."

Mel laughs and despite yourself you relax fractionally, recalling the guards in Old Town asking for their cut. It would not come out of your purse so what do you care what it might cost Gavhaul. Yet you cannot help but notice Gavhaul himself does not step forward. Is he planning to let the captain do the talking? He did not seem that trusting a fellow do you.

The answer does not come in words, but a wave of shifting somehow colorless light that bursts in an arc from an upraised hand to strike a point some fifteen feet above the deck of the ship and there reveal a pair of misshapen fiends inheriting from each frog, bat, and horned goat. The worst features paired with flood red eyes and teeth at once too sharp and too long for their mouths.

Bluff vs Sense Motive: Du Moire 23 vs Mel 14 ; Akorian 22; Gavhaul 30

Gavhaul Dispel Check:
23, 19 (Success; Success)

For a moment confusion reigns as none of the sailors know what the things are, Mina unseen and you not knowing what they are besides unwholesome looking, then Du Moire simplifies matters by drawing his sword and shouting: "Lay down your arms or I'll gut you with the wizard!"

"I'll hang your guts from my mast!" Mel shouts, jumping forward with an oddly shaped axe to hew the rope she had ordered cast down a moment ago, but it's too late. The foe was on the deck and with a twist of his rapier tries to send her weapon flying, though he misjudges the swing.

Seeing their captain's peril the Chelish soldiers in the boat hurl hooks of their own over the side and with a clatter of iron biting into wood, cutlasses in the other hand, coming from both boats and some cutlasses that do not need hands at all. A thing of splintered planks and jagged weapons, its abdomen an broken barrel held with rusted hoops scrambles along the side of the boat, a poor approximation of a spider, though no less deadly for it.

Aboard the enemy ship sailors scramble to load stones and bolts in engines, sure to wreak havoc on the deck of the Fruitful Endeavor, though luckily they seem to have been caught wrong-footed an ambush too soon unveiled.

In swirling chaos the battle is joined, Gorok and his iruxi charge, two of them fall without a blow on them, but axe and spear soon press the foeman against the side of the ship, first blood claimed taken with a squeal from Du Moire.

Iruxi 2 and 3 Prone
Darsielle Du Moire takes 14 Damage -> Now at 28/42

"Wizard! Wizard in the other boat!" Cob shouts over the din as the small fiends cackle at the chaos, the sound promising ruin. Though Gorok is not daunted you can feel your warning magic stripped from both him, the captain, and a handful of the closest friendly sailors.

Gorok is under the effects of Bane

What do you do?

[] Strike at Du Moire, if you can kill or capture him it might drive off the rest or force them to negotiate

[] You're not sure what that spider thing is but it needs to die

[] Try to trap the enemy soldiers climbing onto the hooked ropes to the ropes slowing the Endeavor's crew to cut them loose

[] Deal with that wizard Cob's shouting about... if you can find her.

[] Write in

OOC: Say what you will about PF, I do not think there is any other game where a spider construct made of old barrels, planks, and nails with weapons on the end is a standard enemy.

I'm glad we used Bless on everyone beforehand. That neatly counters the Bane spell. It should also counter it for Gorok, @DragonParadox.

How far away is the enemy ship?

I'm pretty sure those are pirates who have captured a Chelaxian ship, or gone out of their way to make their ship look Chelaxian. Doesn't change things much here and now, but it could have implications later on.

For example, a "Chelaxian" ship attacking Andoran shipping, and perhaps vice versa, could easily kick off a war between the two nations. False flag operation, maybe? Literally in this case, since ship flags are involved.

  1. Bane counters and dispels bless just as bless counters and dispels bane. The last one cast sticks
  2. The enemy ship is about 40 ft away and closing at an angle as they ready their weapons

I didn't think it worked quite like that, but okay, Gorok is still affected by Mina's Heroism spells, so that more than makes up for the Bane effect.

I think Mina and Kori are better off targeting the enemy ship first. Our ship has plenty of allied combatants to defend it against a limited number of boarders, but the enemy ship has an unknown number of potential enemies readying to board, at least one spellcaster according to Cob, and multiple siege engines preparing to fire.

Has Sirim cast Haste on Gorok, Cob, and the others yet?

[X] Kori targets the approaching ship with his Burst of Radiance spell, while Mina does the same with her Web spell. They aim to incapacitate as many enemies as possible.

Ah, I was hoping for something like that. Simplifies things by a lot.

Would our ship be at risk of catching fire and/or sustaining damage from the Pyre Elemental? What's the range on its summoning? I have half a mind to summon it on the other ship, get that wizard busy.

Why would it target us, specifically?
The Hydra's heads reach snapping bone
Reap now thou what you have sown
It implies that the raid was, in some way, caused by our own action. Yet if it were pirates seeking to attack a ship, why would it say that?

There are fiends involved, too. I'd assume if the ship doesn't belong to Her Majesty's Navy, it belongs to, or is controlled by, a faction within Cheliax.

The elemental burns things on contact. You can use it, but it will set fires every round that it is active. As for the range, it is the normal range for summon nature's ally, 45 ft given the level of the item... which means you could send it onto the other ship if you want, just barely.

...okay we should do that.

[X] Unleash the fire elemental on the enemy ship

Chance of backfiring. But hilarious.

I'm thinking about using the gem, too. That might be next round, depending on how things play out this coming round. A Fire Elemental loose on their ship should be a very good distraction.

It might not be specifically targeting us, but rather Andoran shipping in general.

Outsiders can be Summoned by various means or encountered out in the wild. They wouldn't necessarily be here as an official presence from Hell.

Yes, that's why I said 'a ship'. I believe "Reap now thou what you have sown" refers to us, and unless you cound us selling darkwood, we have no connection to Andoran shipping industry.

Or why would that verse be there?
A Fire Elemental loose on their ship should be a very good distraction.
Bonus point if we can make it run over their siege engines. We can't control it, but we might try to position its summoning point and its intended target in a way that would be most disruptive.

They are not imps, they want a war between Andoran and Cheliax...

Those are Quasits, gentlemen, and they are here to produce a fuckton of chaos and suffering.

Ah, I see. We foretold the war to the House of Iselsi, so Andoran expects the attack from Cheliax.

If there is an attack on an Andoran ship, then through our own actions it will be taken as the first act of that war. Our first prophecy may have changed the nature of the intended provocation.

They do look like Quasits. But Quasits don't have Bane naturally.

Quality thaumaturges do though.

Wonderful. So now we have to defeat these mofos, take the ship, and get it back to fucking Cheliax to hand them an apology.

Either that or a war

Eh? No, just sink them, assuming the loss of the ship is already known to the Chelish.

Maybe take the captain alive to give the testimony.
Yeah, no reason to capture and return the ship, IMO. Loot it, then burn it.

I suspect Du Moire isn't even really the captain, just a dupe sent over to distract us to make boarding easier.

If you're voting to use the Fire Elemental, you should consider including an action for Mina, too, since she hasn't acted yet. Her control spells could be really helpful. For example, if she casts Web and locks down a bunch of enemies, not only do they lose the ability to attack us for a bit, they also can't attack the Fire Elemental, and if the Elemental sets stuff on fire, the Web can burn and inflict extra damage on them.

I believe web is flammable. And could be used to foul the enemy ships sails horrifically. As well.

Unlike actual silk yeah, Web is flammable it burns pretty quickly actually. I remember using it in a game once to set fire to a door across a large moat once:
  1. Send in a minor conjured creature to the middle of the moat
  2. Cast Web in it
  3. Set the near parts on fire
  4. Fire races over the cavern and to the door
  5. Giant on the other side opens door right into the teeth of a prepared party :V
Not really applicable here, just popped into my head.

@DragonParadox, has Sirim cast his Haste spell yet?
