I feel like it really shows that for all that Kell has muted emotions he still feels. He's angry at what was done to his home and was revenge, is afraid for his family, hopeful for learning Ka while having doubts about it and has learned to love Kater.

I'm still playing around with how to portray Kell, to be honest. I also do agree that I think I went a little too hard on emotions for Kell in this chapter, though that can very easily be explained as a result of the great amount of upheaval he's currently experiencing. Not to be a sour puss, but I'm kind of on the opposite end here for this. It feels like we get too many looks into how emotional Kell can be, with random outbursts that make Karter go :? about them and his deep long internal narratives on how Angry he is. It honestly feels like Kell isn't so much emotionally muted as he just only feels extremes - when he's happy he's incredibly happy, when he's angry he's incredibly angry, etc, not that he feels less than others do.
It's not a big criticism and I'm not attached to the idea of him being Less Emotional. It just surprises me compared to what he's talked about as being vs what he is.
I'm gonna be homest, I just assumed it was a hint about Karter's powers. He's a cultivator with (I think?) a Tongue of Salt, so I thought he was using his talky magic to draw out Kell's emotions.I'm still playing around with how to portray Kell, to be honest. Karter does not have a Tongue of Salt. He's just suffered mutations as a result of Sands shenanigans. You can ask him about it during downtime, should you so desire.I'm gonna be homest, I just assumed it was a hint about Karter's powers. More XP, should you defeat the monster, as well as additional loot
It's certainly not impossible. However, you do know that any spark-eye that wanted to do such a thing would be at a severe disadvantage. Spark-eyes, though generally poorly understood, are not known to be the originators of monsterhives.Do we know if it's a spark-eye that could potentially set up a new hive if we don't kill it now?
It's nice having nice relatives. Karter's basically Kell's surrogate older brother.
