Gemstone investigation.
This was her chance! After she completed her training and became a fully fledged member of G.U.N,
Topaz had been waiting for her chance to truly make a name for herself.
Her lack of experience in the field had resulted in her mostly shadowing more veteran members on some of their jobs, but that same lack of experience meant that she wasn't shadowing them on the field, but rather, she followed them as they worked on reports and other such paperwork.
She understood the importance of record keeping, but most of those veterans preferred to make their reports themselves, so most of the time she just sat there watching and occasionally bringing them coffee or tea.
She didn't endure months of physical training to become an intern damnit!
Though the abs she got from said training were pretty sweet, she wouldn't complain about that part of it.
But now, with the sudden appearance of these animals all over Station Square and that strange signal, she and many others were finally being assigned to their own personal investigations!
While some got assigned to find more information about the signal or capturing the unusual animals, she and some others got assigned to investigate the sudden robberies that were taking place, and due to so many events happening at once resulting in personnel being spread thin, she gets to investigate a whole block of stores all on her own!
No one breathing on her neck, no chance of anyone taking the credit, she was free to investigate as she saw fit, this was her chance to show everyone that what she was worth, goodbye coffee duty, hello field work!
As she arrived at the first store, one that specializes in diamond encrusted jewelry, she took a deep breath to calm her nerves, adjusted her gloves to make sure she didn't contaminate the scene with her prints, checked to make sure she had her notebook and pencil on her pockets, and walked inside.
The interior was pretty standard, lots of glass cases at the front and sides to show potential customers the jewelry on sale, though of course, right now all were broken into, having been emptied out of most of their contents.
And
that was the first mystery she wanted to solve, why only some jewelry? If they could steal from so many stores with no one noticing, why not take everything? The only thing in common the stolen goods had was that they either had jewels encrusted, or were jewels.
As she got closer to the display, she grabbed one of the pieces that wasn't stolen, a single golden ring with a diamond on it, and while she wasn't exactly an expert on Jewels, it seemed to be quite valuable, "so why didn't they steal you?" She muttered to herself as she turned the ring back and forth in her hand, examining from every angle.
"Hmmm… can't really see why… hold on, what's this?" She suddenly noticed something strange, the diamond had a scratch on it, "that's strange, I thought diamonds were unbreakable, why is this one scratched?" As she asked this, she had a thought, what about the other things that weren't stolen?
She hurriedly picked up more jewelry, checking to see if her theory was right.
Scratched, scratched, scratched, outright cracked, scratched.
They all had some damage to them "it's as though the thief was… checking to see if they were real!" even as she started writing on her notebook to make sure she didn't forget to have some of the jewels sent to the labs, she was pretty sure she knew what the results would be, counterfeits, fake diamonds being sold as though they were real, and the thief made sure they only took the authentic ones.
As she finished writing she turned her attention to the calling card, pulling out a copy of the ones found on the other crime scenes to compare, "hmmm, no difference that I can see, no hair or prints either, guess I won't get anything from this"
She did a sweep of the rest of the store, but couldn't find anything else, even if this wasn't the case solving clue she wanted, she still found
something, plus there were still the other stores to check through.
And as she prepared to do just that, she never noticed she was being watched from a shadowed spot in the rafters, the soft sound of wings beating the only sign of the thief's exit.
AN: and here's an omake about the investigations into the robberies.
Also diamonds aren't unbreakable, but Topaz doesn't know that.
