Cast-Offs of Divinity - A Merchants of Divinity Quest

[X] Plan: Ready Dem Old Bones
-[X] Skill Training (Jörmungandr) (Organizational Knowledge) (4 TAP)
-[X] Work: Things have settled into "Business as usual". For however usual this business is. Expected pay: 3 Decent dots. (2 AP)
-[X] Continue crafting the Neuroplasticity enhancer. (2 AP)
-[X] Arrange for an operating theater. You will need somewhere to work, and make sure you have sufficient supplies. (2 AP)
-[X] Arrange for a constant stream of patients. (3 2 (Reduced by networking) AP)
-[X] Arrange for an assistant. A final line of defense against interruptions. Someone to make sure all your patients arrive on time, and fill any holes in your schedule. (2 AP)

We really need our first contract, and the NP Enhancer isn't big enough to qualify.
But the NP enhancer is usefull for everything we want to learn (taking us from d3 to d4, expected value per d rising from (1+2+3)/3=6/3=2 to (1+2+3+4)/4=10/4=2.5, a boost of 25%).

Plus Bones is 26 AP. For something useless except for the Weight gain.
Doc Infinum is 31 AP (1 AP planing, 30 AP doing the project) for a contract perfectly fitting our character. Plus a project that can fit greatly to our new rivalry (if we make it a bio project).

We have 10 turns until the first "clash" in our rivalry.
We can take the 1.5 turns NP then Infinum would take longer to get our first god fitting perfectly instead of a narratively unfitting god min-maxing Weight gain. (Which by definition would be a project great enough to get a gods attention)

Would suggest just switching all the TAP from Old Bones Geography into Geography as we're paying a decent dot for that.

In what universe is supernatural emotional resilience useless???
It's a situational benefit that only gets used if we're in crisis mode. The biggest argument against Old Bones is that he probably has different ideals than Leviathan and his nature-shifting terms are worrying.

In what universe is supernatural emotional resilience useless???
Supernatural emotional resilience as a mad scientist.
You know what? I'll give you "extremely situational", not "useless".

At the cost of putting more than 2 full turns of AP into a thematically uninteresting (in this characters narrative, not in general) god.

Also, appears i forgot to vote previously.
[X] Plan Need Now Today

Yay! Glad that went over well. Was worried it would fall flat.
We have 10 turns until the first "clash" in our rivalry.
Technically speaking you can initiate another clash as soon as you has something to show off. Which could be an item you made, but doesn't strictly have to be.
The more you have the better showing you can give though.

The 10 turn timer is until the first expeditions start. Which is more a city-wide event/opportunity to prepare for. (Though you can be pretty sure your rival will be involved so there is a high probability of a clash.)

Bit less then 5 hours left on the vote and it's a 3 way tie! Any tiebreakers?
Some people may want to adjust their vote as as two of the plans are largely similar as well.

Oh, I have returned to a tie situation? Well, I don't really mind either plan- MD and the item are roughly the same effect in terms of training, after all. I'd like to save money for the Biology course though.

Ultimately I think we'll want to contact both Infinium and MD, but the device is closer in terms of AP.

Well, it looks having a rival steps up the schedule. Lets see how it turns out!

You're not paid to ask questions. But that doesn't mean you don't have them. How did that mercenary get a pen stuck in his knee? Why couldn't they have just gone to the hospital, which you can grudgingly admit has people more skilled then you?

You have no idea, but the group in question was even less talkative then Leader, so you don't think you ever will.

Gain 3 decent dots.

Mix sample 1. Mix sample 2. Mix sample 3. Mix sample 4.

Wait three minutes.

Check samples. Record results. Dispose and clean glassware.

Repeat.

Sometimes science is brilliant sparks of innovation. Sometimes it's boring and repetitive. This is one of the latter. Nothing you are doing is revolutionary. You follow well worn grooves. Color by the numbers, and you get the picture.

You idly flip your book's page while you wait for the machine to beep. At least this political thriller was good.

Neuroplasticity enhancer at (12/15) AP. 3 AP remain.

Organizational Knowledge now at 2 (43/125)

"That is so inefficient!"

"That's human-run systems for you." Jörmungandr says with a sardonic chuckle. "People are inconsistent and often don't communicate. Use this to your advantage."

"Give me an example".

"Say you have a paper document, but it gets torn in two. The content isn't damaged so you carefully line up the two halves and try to submit it, but they reject it. What do you do?"

"Does the document need to be the original? Can I replace it easily?"

"Yes. No."

"Then find the document repair protocol for the document, or the sub-protocol for submitting a damaged version. "

"And if none exist?"

"Convince the clerk to accept it anyway? Humans are vulnerable to bribes and threats."

"Maybe, but that can be risky. Instead: Venue shop. Often policy is vague, and what is acceptable or unacceptable can be up to individual interpretation. So find someone with a favorable interpretation."

AN: Short turn, but that's not always a bad thing. I might introduce a time-skip mechanic for longer crafting projects so people can vote on more then one turn at once if they are going to be similar? What do people think?

Probably a good idea at some point especially when we get to higher level and longer projects but I don't think that is a big concern yet.

Give us crafting AP separate from regular AP, disallow use of AP on crafting. Boom, now we have to do other stuff. :V

So I don't know what but we should probably at least draft a schematic to get started on the Doctor Infinium contract. Cool bio-monster to battle our rival with, and act as a bodyguard so we don't have to do any fighting ourselves?
Edit: Would help if I read the rules on how crafting works, nevermind that.

Gets us started on a cool project for Dr Infinum that we can also use to show off to Dr Bright.
Fun, the best god, and advancing our rivalry plot!

[] Scaly science stuff
-[] Skill training (University) (Science(Chemistry)) (4 TAP)
-[] Work: Things have settled into "Business as usual". For however usual this business is. Expected pay: 3 Decent dots. (2 AP)
-[] Continue crafting the Neuroplasticity enhancer. 3 AP remain. (3 AP)
-[] Draft a schematic for Dr Infinum (5 AP)
--[] Using "Artificial Organ" effect, craft body modifications that make you looks like a dragon. Scales, Horns, Wings, Tail.
--[] Do not reduce AP cost below 30, if roll would put it below 30 stay at 30 and invest the remaining AP into crafting

Edit:
above plan is probably useless, here is a plan that prepares to get started on it next turn.
Edit 3:
Removed the restriction as that would seemingly make the research project extremely difficult.

I really don't see the point of looking like a dragon, what mechanical effect are you looking for? Armor? I don't think combat is really a focus right now. Something that boosts our preseption or our medical ability would be more relevant.

Maybe~
But you will have to really earn it. AP are valuable.

--[X] Do not reduce AP cost below 30, if roll would put it below 30 stay at 30 and invest the remaining AP into crafting
So, about this. I should warn you. Doctor Infinium really won't be impressed with intentionally taking extra time on a project just to push it over 30 AP.
Also for a single 9 point project and 6d6 science dice:
Average roll of about 21.
AP Cost = (((9*2)^(1.5))/(21*1)+0.5)^2 = 17 AP.

So unless you roll really atrociously, there is no way for it to take 30 AP.

Is something wrong with my math, when I ran the numbers for a 9 difficulty project I got 13AP
Anyway according to my math a 15 point project for somthing like an organ to permanently apply an effect like +6 perception would take 58AP so that is just too much right now. The sweet spot is a 12 point item, taking around 29AP. But I don't see any good combos to actually make with the effects we have right now. If we want to make nuroplstity effect permanent we would need 18 points as it is an organ plus a 9 point effect, and I don't thing a 12 point painkiller organ is really useful, I guess we could sell it. Or just combine painkillers and the nuroplstity and waste the painkiller effect to reach 30AP.
Also funfact the 18 point project takes 100 AP right now with a roll of 21.
If we get the money for a high dots lab and a very very good roll like 28 it only takes 10 AP
Are we are we should just put off making something untill we get a good roll on a diff 15 item if we get a roll like 27-29 it only takes 30-35 AP somthing more practical. That should be the last of the additions I can think of to this post. In conclusion A. The high lab is a game changer get it as soon as you can. B make a 15 diff item, it should only take 30-35AP with a good roll that we can fish for. Combo organ and perception seems great.

Mechanically speaking, I'll quote what we have to do to gain Dr Infinium contract:
To gain Doctor Infinium's attention you will need to complete a worthy science project. One with at least a total AP cost of 30. To do this you will of course need a lab. At least a professional level of scientific skill (3 in general + 3 in a specialty) is required. Fortunately you already possess such. The project must be for entirely self centered reasons. You must be doing it for no reason greater then because you can. You will need an idea. Once you start the project you must work on it every turn until it is done.
Underline by me.
We might be able to minmax some use out of the project with other ideas, but... I think looking like a dragon is a cool thing to have and that it will be neat to read a protagonist who does that.
So the real reason: We gotta spend 30 AP and I think that is the most fun way to spend them. (And it takes the narrative reasoning of the condition serious by being 100% "because its cool")

We could do mechanically useful projects building on that.
Like if we expect to be exposed to fights, possibilities include (all would require us to get some more science-project-components):
Armored scales
Firebreathing
That blade implant from the merc team re-flavored to be claws

General mobility:
Gliding wings

AN: Short turn, but that's not always a bad thing. I might introduce a time-skip mechanic for longer crafting projects so people can vote on more then one turn at once if they are going to be similar? What do people think?
When we start with the 20-30 AP projects, that could be a good idea.

And when I'm about to post, there is a qm post...

Ah crap.
would need to be
(((9*2)^(1.5))/(15*1)+0.5)^2=31.26
6d6=15.
and 6d6<16 has a chance of 9.65% according to anydice.com.
Any chance to consider the component a bit more expensive due to being very wide-ranging cosmetic changes?

On the "intentionally taking extra time" what about flavoring it as Leviathan adding more details to her project when she sees its too easy? (probably not to the degree necessary with the expected value of 17, I'd assume, but generally possible?)

If that isn't ok, i could change the plan to prepare by looking for a T1 armor component.

We need to do research to unlock those effects, I think it can become easier with access to the papers, but that still needs to happen. Also due to the way I wrote my last post you might should check it again sorry. The chance of a roll for science in the range of what I defined as good 27+ is around 10% for 6d6 better than taking a 21 and spending 50AP but I don't know the exact average best point and I don't want to do that math.

Ok, reacting to the edited comment:
I really don't see the point of looking like a dragon, what mechanical effect are you looking for? Armor? I don't think combat is really a focus right now. Something that boosts our preseption or our medical ability would be more relevant.
The point of looking like a dragon is explained above (cause its cool).
What use armor would have?
If we want to do medic work (which I think you are implying with your boosting medical ability comment) then some armor could make tagging along for better pay reasonable. (3 decent dots to 5+ decent dots, 3 -> 5 would be a 66% increase in pay, when we hit a 6 it would be a full doubling of our pay)
[] Tag along on a mission. Pay 5+ decent dots. Note: Ability to survive in or avoid combat is highly recommended. (2 AP)

But mainly... Because its cool/fun to read.

Is something wrong with my math, when I ran the numbers for a 9 difficulty project I got 13AP
Maybe? I'm getting similar number to you, but not quite exactly the same.
18 point project with a decent lab and roll of 21 gives 116.33 AP.

Like if we expect to be exposed to fights, possibilities include (all would require us to get some more science-project-components):
Armored scales
Firebreathing
That blade implant from the merc team re-flavored to be claws

General mobility:
Gliding wings
In order:
Armored scales: Easy enough You are already most of the way there
Firebreathing: Difficult but possible. Not 100% well suited for biology however.
Blade implant re-flavored to be claws: Entirely possible
Gliding wings: Very very difficult. Humans aren't really well designed for flight. Not with reasonable sized wings at least. If you want flight you should look elsewhere then biology.

Any chance to consider the component a bit more expensive due to being very wide-ranging cosmetic changes?
*Shakes head*
If anything the level of changes you propose should require multiple projects. One for the horns. One for the scales. Etc. Artificial Organ is really only meant for a single "organ".

Not quite. If you want to add more details you will need an effect, say one which increases the aesthetic value of your creation. (Say giving a bonus to Social knowledge (Intimidation) or Social knowledge (Rhetoric))
I will say that time spent drafting the project can count to the 30 requirement though. So not to discourage you from trying to plan it out well. Infinium wouldn't want to encourage sloppiness.

Also I will say that researching low level (T1-2) components is very easy. You can almost certainly find anything you are looking for unless it is really exotic.
Technically you could probably research it yourself too for nearly trivial cost. Like take:
Result*Workshop Level*(sqrt(AP)-0.5) ≥ (Bonus points*2)^1.5
17*1*(sqrt(2)-0.5) ≥ (3*2)^1.5

Just 2 AP has more then an 85% chance of successfully researching a T1 effect.

Basically not having low level Effects should not be a big barrier. You should feel free to grab more, not be trapped with what you have.
