Chapter One: Secrets of Skyhold

Stepping off the sand-ship and onto the docks of Skyhold, you find yourself staring up. And then even higher, forcing your neck to crane back all the way. Standing at the seat of a tall mountain, the sight of the college is one that leaves you breathless.

Carved directly into its surface, the College of Skyhold is a series of awnings, balconies, and verandas that switchback all the way up. The sheer scale beats out most cities and is considered one of the marvels of architectural magic. Dozens of ships sail in and out of the Endless Erg, a desert spanning half the continent. The one you arrived in, The Drifting Cloud, is one such vessel.

A voice catches your attention from behind you. "Hey-"

Who are you?
[] Male
[] Female
[] Nonbinary

"- you forgot one of your bags!" A sailor calls, grinning in amusement as he throws the large satchel your way. Catching it, you're greatly relieved that someone remembered. Losing the paperwork in this back would have been a big issue. You worked hard studying enough to pass the entrance exams, and your family needed to apply for a scholarship, being well off but not high class. At least by the standards of your home-

From where do you hail?
[] Lothal - A city of stone, formed from thousands of basalt columns.
[] Theras Tel - The jewel of the Endless Erg, a city of sand.
[] Highvale - Reaching towards the heavens, a city of valleys.
[] Ras Andis - A city of storms, a bulwark against the sea.

A moment of homesickness falls over you, but it quickly passes as the excitement returns. You've arrived. Skyhold, the premier establishment of learning. There are larger colleges and places of learning certainly, but this one has the most quality. No students that graduate from here ever struggle for an occupation.

Learning magic is why you came here. To fully explore your burgeoning affinities and get an education that will take you far. Casting your gaze over the busy docks, you try to sink into the strange affinity sense that has started forming since you first discovered them. Closing your eyes, you can almost feel a sixth sense as you tap into it, feeling out the nearby -

What magic do you call your own?
[] Write in. Affinities generally follow common elements. Fire, water, wind, force. Meta affinities exist, but are subject to QM approval. You can have a maximum of three.

I've decided to start a quest for funsies. Something to do in my off time when I'm not writing my main fiction. I've only seen a few fanfics of Mage Errant and thought I'd give it a go.

I favor this due to helping shape it. And my initial plan had a similar aspect to it.

It's been a while since I read Mage Errant, I still need to read books 6 and 7. I did really enjoy it so this quest should be fun.

[X] Female
[X] Ras Andis - A city of storms, a bulwark against the sea.
[X] Wind
[X] Frost
[X] Sight

I'm not sure if you want us to use vote by plan, so I will just vote for now.

If people have a plan they wish to input then you can vote for that, yeah. Currently it's a bit of a eclectic mix, but I'm sure the voters will naturally gravitate towards certain choices. And yes they are good books. The last is probably my favorite.

Don't really know the series so just going to see where this goes.

[X] Male
[X] Highvale

[X] Male
[X] Highvale
[X] Illusion - sight
[X] Illusion - sound
[X] Illusion - smell

....or is illusion a catch all?
The only thing you need to know. Specific beats general. General is general it has broader applications, Specific Blows general in areas it can apply.

The more specific the better.

Edit:

That being said for this

I'd probably do Auditory/visual/Olfactory Hallucinations they work better in terms of known affinities.

The basic gist for people who don't know is that affinities are, as the title suggests, an aspect of magic you are stronger with. As goable said, the more specific, the stronger your control over it.

If you possess a 'stone' affinity, someone who has an affinity towards, say, granite, will generally have greater control and beat you out on said material. Compound affinities are the most common, being multiple variations of an affinity towards a specific subject. Having an affinity towards fire might mean you go about it in different ways than someone else. Someone might increase friction in an area, or simply produce flame.

Cluster affinities are more broad, having domain over multiple subjects. Someone with an affinity towards earth will be able to manipulate any kind of rock, gem, dirt, or small particles but not very well. There are several affinities that do not and can not exist, namely: time, maths, life and death. Meta-affinities like 'illusion' exist, but they're complicated subjects.

If you have multiple votes in a future update, you'll probably want to use topic tags. It makes it a lot easier to tally. Eg

[][Gender] Female
[][Origin] Ras Andis - A city of storms, a bulwark against the sea.
[][Affinity] Water, Wind, Lightning

[X] Nonbinary
[X] Theras Tel - The jewel of the Endless Erg, a city of sand.
[X] Sand, Lightning, Glass

Funny how the results line up like this. The highest vote for origin is Highvale so you'll be originating from there. Gender has tied on all counts, so I'll be rolling for the result. 1 = Female, 2 = Male, 3 = NB. Female it is.

Lastly, Hallucinations is tied with Wind/Frost/Sight. I'll be rolling for those two as well. 1 = Hallucinations, 2 = WFS. Mystic Eyes of Cold Perception wins the tiebreaker.

Sight is going to be best in terms of fooling or utilizing sight.

So blinding people, creating visual illusions, or showing and revealing things through sight will be what we'd want Sight for. I'd suggest trying to develop affinity sight. Its rather broad however...

Wind is... multiple interpretations exist, I'm guessing they mean the movement of air here though. It's possible they mean wind which would be To wrap (something) around a center or another object once or repeatedly. As its movement of air, it's more narrow than air, as it's only an aspect of it.

Frost is frankly the narrowest of the three, and as such the most powerful. It's A deposit of minute ice crystals formed when water vapor condenses at a temperature below freezing..

So the manipulation and creation of deposits of minute ice crystals, rather useful. This should be our Ace.

Your first strange sensation is one that caused you quite a bit of confusion. 'Wind', but not in the normal sense. A winding, spiral sensation that clues you in to the location of various objects and patterns. A coiled rope, a metal spring. Locks of hair. It's a very subtle affinity, though you can feel quite far with it. Small flashes of existence in areas as far as ten meters.

Second in your strange new feelings is the sensation of cold. Out here in the desert one would think it difficult to find such a thing, but you discover very quickly that shaded objects are significantly colder than the sand. Jarring portions of cold pop out to your sight-beyond-sight, hues turning from a dark red to a light blue. People are the strangest, being a mish-mash of colors. Within the shacks and buildings you can even feel the pure white that is frost and ice in people's larders.

Lastly, your affinity towards sight. Originally you had thought yourself to only have two affinities. But then you started noticing people's eyes on you. Literally. Conical rays of 'sense' began to trickle into your conciousness. Even now, this deep in your senses, you flinch every time someone looks at you. Suddenly a field of 'I AM LOOKING' has turned its attention to you. It's uncomfortable to say the least. But, you have to admit, having three affinities is certainly a blessing.

Far better than being one of the mindblind. Such a fate isn't kind. Honing your senses, you try to pick up on the one that is the most clear.

Pick which Affinity is the strongest. Dice mechanics will be explained later, but currently you have three 'pools' to align. One pool will have 3d6 dice, one will have 2d6, and one will have 1d6. Your affinities will grow with time and training, but for now you must pick one to be more powerful than the others.

[] [Spiral] - xd6
[] [Frost] - xd6

Satisfied that your magic isn't acting up, you pull your senses back and into the world. The sounds of hustle and bustle return, and you're quickly grumbled at for standing in the middle of the dock. Chastised, you pat some sand off of your skirt and continue forwards.

Exiting the docks, you can already see a crowd of students forming outside the massive doors that make up Skyhold's entryway. Dozens, from all corners of the continent, stand idly as they wait for the official-looking figure to finish asking names. You spot several Highvaleans amidst the crowd. Part of you has to instinctively not attempt to bow to the noble-looking one, but you refrain. You're a proper wizard, now. Both students. The white haired girl has no authority over you.

Approaching the official, he adjusts his spectacles and looks towards you. "Another one? Very well. What is your name?"

[] [Name] - Write in.

As funny as it would be to have the affinity be literally to wind things around other things, I'm not going to screw you all over on it.

While it would be more powerful, the difference is that 'Winding' would be much less flexible. While you could do things like manipulate ropes and whips, it would only be possible to manipulate such objects towards something else with the intended goal of wrapping around it. Having wind instead would let you move around said rope in three-dimensions. It's a bit of a trade off. I could see some fancy stuff being pulled off with springs, though.

Au Contraire,my compadre.

What happens when you wind Shadow around someone? Time around an object? Space around a door? Life around a Corpse?

This is mage Errant. Winding things around things, doesn't require a whip, just you fulfilling the aspects purpose.

Unfortunately, 'winding shadows' would be a very late developed capability and require a lot of training to accomplish. It is creative, though. You'd also be weaker than someone in their own domains on that front, but twisting various things is rather broad.

Your absolutely right in that regard. Though I'm glad I got you to see my point. Winding is quite powerful, though broad in its own way

Edit: Now I really want this variation of the aspect.
