[X] Hidden River - The scent of water is unmistakable. This river was buried for a reason.
And now we can watch as cannon flies off the rails. It will be missed. I can't wait to see the new teams that form and how characters change as a result. I'm hoping for Jaune and Wiess to be on a team with Jaune as the leader and Wiess trying to figure out how he was chosen over her and Pyrrha.

Best guess
Blake Belladonna and Lie Ren, Yang Xia Long and Nora Valkyrie Team BVYL (Bevil) Leader Lie Ren
Pyhra Nikos and Weiss Shcnee, Ruby Rose and Sun Wukong Team SSRP (Slurp) Leader Ruby Rose
Ilia and Xanthe Valkyrie, Jaune Arc and Lobo Team Avil (Anvil) Leader Xanthe

[X] Ancient Ruins - This was a town once. Amid the broken buildings and faded paths lingers a spirit.
Amusingly Anvil is a team name, but not with that combination. And I can promise you that if I ever reached the point where Slurp was the best choice for a team I'd promptly change the team. Bevil is not a word I knew either.
[X] Foreboding Cavern - You can't tell if this is man-made or not. But someone hid and sealed something in here.

I take it this is cavern with deathstalker, though maybe there is something useful as well? Let's see
Also Xanthe and Illia, Nora and Yang, Lobo and Jaune, Pyrrha and Weiss, Ruby and Sun, Ren and Blake. 6 pairs, 3 teams in total.
Let's see - Pyrrha still needs her weapon returned so she have chances of meeting Jaune and Lobo. If they make team with Jaune as leader I could think of only one team name - ANLS (Anglerfish or Angels)
Xanthe, Ruby and Sun - three leaders in one team sounds like too much so I presume they would be in different teams. Moreover after Xanthe blew her horn I presume at least 1 Ren's or Nora's pair would come to her. Most likely Blake and Ren as better trackers. Though maybe Yang and Nora. And I can only think of name with second pair XXNA which translates as Xiaotingia - prehistoric feathered dinosaur, but I like to read it as Xena (with obvious reference).
And third team - Ruby, Sun, Ren and Blake is easy after that - RSBR (Raspberry).
Huh, RSBR is better than what I had for Ruby's team, definitely using that. Anglerfish and Angels are not combo's I would've seen but are pretty good. And I need t spend some time with a book of dinosaurs or something, I've missed a lot since focusing on fantasy and history when I was 7.

Keep in mind that while partners are eye contact, Teams are based on the relic choices. Not that anyone knows that IC. You can probably get a choice in who your partner is (I can't imagine Ozpin or Glynda calling Weiss out on walking away from Ruby in canon if she'd stuck with Jaune) but not the other two.
You Monster! How could you do this to poor Pyrrha? I think she'd prefer the cannon route where she dies.
RIP partnered with your fangirl
Literally the worst possible scenario for Pyrrha - not just a fangirl but someone who actively only values her because of her fame.
Spoken like someone who's given rides to children. Or babies even.
There have been times in his centuries long life where Drakōn was left as the primary caretaker of children for up to a month at a time. It wasn't fun for him, but everyone made it out okay.

So good, I guessing our main character and her new friend will be paired with Nora and Yang. They would make a wonderful team strategically and have such interesting dynamics.

My thoughts on team selection basically went: 'Okay, you're partnered with Ilia. Do I put Weiss and/or Blake on the team?' Then it was 'Do I put Nora on your team or leave her alone (also would she be more freaked out by Ren partnering with Yang, aka someone very similar to Nora, or someone like Blake, who is very similar to Ren?)'. Then it became 'If Nora isn't on your team Yang/Sun/etc are strong fourth members that can help counterbalance the drama. Or fixing the drama could be entirely your problem.'.

So you guys figured out RSBR (bonus to @FakePriest for team comp and a better name) and that there's some version of ANVIL (bonus to @General_Hatvenom)

Not sure yet if the bonus will be a bonus to a roll or what but I'll figure it out.

Anyway, vote closed. Lets go fight a poltergeist.

The Emerald Forest P2 - Conversation Amid Ruins
-Ancient Ruins - This was a town once. Amid the broken buildings and faded paths lingers a spirit.

You can tell from the way Ilia clings to you that she's never ridden a donkey, never mind a mammoth or dinosaur. Her complete lack of balance reminds you of a child really.

Drakōn quickly found a trail to follow - seemingly a winding deer trail that you'd expect to eventually lead you to a river, but the width of the trail and the occasional sapling reveals the truth. This trail was cut by people, to get a cart through the forest.

You've seen more than a few abandoned roads in the last year, ever since the Wolves returned to Sarkoris. None of them were this overgrown, but you could never be sure if that was because demons or others were using them or if the Abyssal taint was ruining any plant growth.

Probably both.

When the trail leads to a wide clearing consisting mostly of dirt, lonely trees and what looks to have been a small field for crops before it was left to seed your suspicions are vindicated. Ilia starts as you jump off of Drakōn's back and he leans down to sniff at the ground.

"What is it?" She asks, awkwardly climbing down.

"We're looking for a relic right? Where better to find one?" You ask, gesturing around the clearing. It takes Ilia a moment to realise what you're talking about, but she soon spots something you'd missed - the well worn foundations of a cottage.

"This was someone's home." She says quietly.

"Who knows how many have lived and died in this forest?" Drakōn asks.

"It doesn't matter. The only people here are other students." You point out, stalking across the clearing and scanning the ground for anything looking appropriately old. "What do you think we're looking for anyway?"

"In books relics are usually something holy, so I'm guessing masks or lanterns or something in an ornate little box. What do you think they are?" Ilia says.

"I'm thinking old weapons or armour. Something that was used in battle." You say after a moment. That's the sort of thing the crusaders put in their museums at least. It never made much sense to you - if the weapon was still good, it should wielded, not shut away and left to gather dust.

It takes you a few minutes to find anything notable and even then it takes you a moment to recognise it. The firm stone beneath your feet isn't rubble or buried foundations, but a raised stone with a bird carved into it.

A gravestone.

"Do you think this counts? Is it meant to be a challenge to get the relics back to Beacon?" You ask as you crouch down and brush the dirt off of the stone. The writing you reveal is meaningless but your goal is to determine how big the entire thing is - and it's large enough that you wouldn't be able to move it without Drakōn's help.

"A headstone? Definitely not." Ilia says with a grimace. "They wouldn't want us desecrating a grave."

You consider it for a moment and yield the point with a nod.

"I never understood it. Any of it." You admit, tracing the bird carving. "Why bother burying a corpse? The soul has long since departed, it doesn't care what you do with the body."

"What do you think should be done with them?" Ilia asks, looking confused.

"Leave them for the beasts and the plants. Let everything they took return to the world." You say with a shrug.

"Burn them. Leave nothing for those with naught but hate in their heart to urn against the living." Drakōn interjects, talking around necromancy as best he can.

"That's a waste of good wood." You point out. "And unnecessary. After a few days with the wolves and ravens there won't be anything left to be used but bone."

Ilia gives you a disturbed look for a moment before swallowing and talking.

"Graves are important. Even if you don't have a body to bury." She says quietly. "It gives you something to remember them with. Something to talk to. Something to prove they existed."

"The dead aren't gone." You point out. "The soul moves on to the afterlife and the spirit returns to the world. In life or death, we're all connected. From the tallest mountain to the smallest ant. Anyone can talk to the dead. You just have to listen harder to hear them answer."

When you stand you see Ilia staring through the trees, utterly blind to the world. You sigh as you approach, regretting what you'd said. Even if your topic hadn't brought up some past death you don't know what the people of Remnant do with their dead.

"My father died before I was born, fighting a monster. He would've survived if he ran, but stood and fought to give others a chance. I never met him, but I do know him." You say, taking her hand in yours. "It's why I use a bow, why I became a hunter instead of a singer or herbalist. Whoever you lost isn't far away. You just have to reach out."

Ilia hesitates before setting her face in a scowl and glaring at you.

"It isn't the same. My parents shouldn't have died." She says, grimacing and stepping away, shaking her hand free of your grasp. "And the worst thing I could do is the same thing as them."

Before either of you can continue the ground suddenly bucks, sending you stumbling into Ilia and the two of you toppling over.

You scramble to your feet as you hear stone grind on stone, seeing a cyclopean grimm mask rise up from the ground, protruding from a shadowy stain on the gravestone. In only a few seconds it forms a stony body for itself from the buried ruins, equaling Drakōn's stature with ease.

"What in the Nine Hells is that?" You ask, the golem grimm answering with an oddly high pitched rattling screech.

Drakōn responds with a roar of his own before charging, his jaws clamping down on an arm as your arrows bounce off of the other.

"I think it's called a Gigas." Ilia answers, trying to cut at the grimm's legs and failing to do anything more than get pulled forwards when her whip gets caught instead of cutting through the stone.

You frown as Drakōn fails to do anything more than scratch it as it grabs his jaws and forces him back.

"Do you have anything that can break stone?" You ask, knowing your best option - Acid Arrow - would immediately give you away.

"I only have lightning dust." Ilia says, hesitating rather than attacking. Not that your attempts are doing any better - the mask is apparently as hard as stone and the thing is surprisingly good at twitching just in time to ruin your shots at the eye.

"We'll have to get in close then. I'll distract it and you tangle up the legs. Drakōn can knock it to the ground and then we'll grind down the stone under his weight. It'll take a while, but the monster will die." You decide.

"You can't be serious. Drakōn isn't going to crack open a boulder by jumping on it!" Ilia yells right as you start forwards.

"Then what's your plan?" You ask, turning to face her.

"We should just leave. There aren't any relics here and we must be faster than it." She says.

"You want us to flee and leave the monster? Who knows who it could hurt if we don't kill it now?" You demand.

"We can't kill it! We should go find someone else, someone who can crack stone. And if it doesn't follow us, who cares? There isn't anyone in the forest." Ilia yells.

"Except the other students." You point out.

"Every warrior must stand for themselves." Drakōn yells, struggling to stop the grimm from shoving him back with it's longer arms. "There is nothing here to fight for!"

"Fine!" You snap, turning and pulling one of the dust arrows from your quiver, taking careful aim. "Drakōn fall back, Ilia get on his back. I'll buy us the space we need to make a break for it." You decide.

You don't wait for Ilia to respond and focus, paying very careful attention as you let the arrow fly. It hits exactly where you aimed and though the arrowhead doesn't stick, the vines sprouting from it quickly wrap around the grimm's arm.

They don't do much to constrict its movement since the arm isn't attached to anything, but from how the dust felt you'll be able to manage this. It's not all that different from casting a spell.

Drakōn lets the grimm twist him over, rolling and springing up with ease. He shoulder charges it and knocks it back the same way he would a giant, exactly as you need him to.

You chant a few words of Sylvan as you let the arrow fly, the same incantation Mortok uses to call on the great Arboreals.

Your arrow embeds itself between the legs of the grimm and is swiftly transformed into a rapidly growing tree, the dust returning the arrow shaft to life and the resulting tree growing between the grimm's body and legs, sending it clattering to the ground as whatever telekinetic force let it stay standing failed.

You easily jump onto Drakōn's back as he runs, helping Ilia sit in the saddle rather than hang helplessly off the side, scowling as the grimm slowly stands back up and screeches at you.

----------------------------------

Drakōn picks up the scent of another pair of students that quickly leads you in the right direction, where the northern edge of the forest gives way to a canyon dotted with crumbling stone ruins.

Apparently finding the relics was meant to be easier than you'd expected, judging from the circular ruin several other students have gathered at.

You can't tell if it once had a roof or if it was meant to be open to the sky - you'd bet on the latter if the people of Remnant knew of Desna. Within the ruin is a set of grey stone pedestals displaying ornate metal figures. Several have already been taken, more than you'd expect from the people gathered here.

It should be humbling to know you lost, but when you don't know who beat you it just burns. What if that pointy haired jerk was one of them?

No, you don't have time to worry about that. This Initiation isn't a race and your deeds will prove your superiority.

As Drakōn dramatically skids to a stop in front of the others instead of simply slowing down you do a quick head count. Nora has a golden figurine balanced on her head, Ren is standing next to a dark haired girl and managing to look calm as worry fades from his eyes.

Yang is standing at the back looking thoroughly confused, next to an impressed Pyrrha, the scowling white haired girl, a blonde boy in a breastplate who looks completely out of his depth and a wolf faunus with grey-white ears poking out from a mane of grey-white hair and an eager grin.

"Nora, good. We need your grenades to shatter a golem." You say, frowning when a check behind you fails to reveal the monster. Where did it go?

"Is that a dinosaur?" One of the students asks.

"Xanthe! You made it!" Nora responds with a surprisingly brittle grin.

"Talk about an entrance." Someone else adds.

"Of course I did." You say with a snort. "Wait, did you doubt me?"

"You weren't exactly prepared." Drakōn points out.

"Did the dinosaur just talk?"

"Neither were you." You retort, scanning your surroundings again and failing to see the golem. You do spot something flying high above you, too big to be a normal bird.

"Ilia. You okay?" The wolf faunus asks as your partner shakily climbs down.

"So what am I blowing up?" Nora asks eagerly.

"I'm fine." Ilia says, brushing herself down and fixing her hair. "Who's your partner?"

"A giant stone golem. We might have to hunt it down, but that won't be hard." You say.

"This tonto. And yours?" The faunus says, gesturing at the blonde who'd been less prepared for being catapulted into the forest than you before looking you up and down.

"What's a golem?" The white haired girl asks.

You look at the faunus and smile. "Xanthe Valkyrie. And you are?"

"I'm not seeing any golems." Ren says with a frown.

"Lobo Nyctimus." He says, his grin widening to show off all of his teeth.

"An artificial construct animated by magic. In this case a grimm that built itself a body of stone." You explain, glancing at the white haired girl before returning your gaze to the sky. "Incoming."

"Wait, how is there a"

"Are you talking about a" Yang and the white haired girl begin asking, only to get cut off by gunshots.

"Heads uuuuuup!" Two voices yell as they hurtle towards the ground, red and white specks quickly resolving into Ruby and Sun as they take control of their fall.

"Hi Ruby! Look, it's your sister!" Nora yells back, jabbing her elbow into Yang's side.

You shrug and dismount Drakōn, smoothly landing next to Ilia.

"The relics are here? We don't need to keep looking?" You ask Lobo and his companion, both of whom are staring straight up.

"Were they riding a Nevermore?" The black haired girl asks.

"Uh, yeah. They're over there." The blonde boy says, pointing at the figures on the pedestals.

You move over to the figures as Ruby and Sun land, tuning out the constant conversation and the quiet murmurs that follow Yang's angry demand for some calm.

The metal figures are reminiscent of the game Imperial Conquest, something that Nenio had dragged you into playing when she found a trader with a nearly complete set. A game from the Padishah Empire of Kelesh that can be played with two, three or four players, it was unlike anything you'd ever tried.

It had taken hours for Nenio to finish dismantling your empire and her subsequent game with the Knight-Commander, Lady Tirabade and the former Paralictor lasted two days.

These pieces are cast from metal instead of being carved from ivory, but remain the same - a general with an ornate coronet attached to their helm, knights on horses, magicians with ornate staffs, banners with their liege's symbols lifted high by proud soldiers, archers and chariots scattered among the men-at-arms...

The only difference is that the elephant has been replaced by some large gun, the bullets consisting of round stones reminiscent of catapult ammunition. How odd.

Choosing one is simple enough and you're greeted by the blonde boy when you turn back to the group.

"I think this is yours." He says, holding an arrow out to you. You take with a smile.

"Thanks. Every arrow counts." You say, returning it to your primary quiver.

"I should be thanking you. If you and Pyrrha hadn't been looking out for me I might've broken my arms or something." He says sheepishly.

"So you didn't have a landing strategy either?" You ask.

"No, I'd never heard of them before today." He admits before holding out his hand. "I'm Jaune. Jaune Arc."

"Xanthe Valkyrie." You say, clasping his hand and shaking. "So how did Pyrrha help you?"

"She threw her spear, pinned me to a tree by the shoulder. You ah, just missed my thighs." He says, showing you the holes in his clothes. Thighs indeed, he was lucky he wasn't flailing too much.

"We have to look out for each other, we're all following the same path." You say as you rejoin the others.

"How could anyone be so reckless as to ride a Nevermore?" The white haired girl is asking.

"Ruby, Sun." You say, greeting your friends. "That was a smart idea, no faster way to navigate a forest than by flying."

"I wish I'd thought of it." Nora adds.

"Thanks! I'm just glad it worked." Ruby says with a bashful smile.

"A pity you couldn't take to the sky yourself." Drakōn points out in a quiet rumble.

"If only you had wings." You retort, not wanting to repeat the argument about your spell knowledge. Fly is a fourth level spell, there's no way you'd be capable of it now!

You turn away from him look at the others. They've spread out a bit, leaving Drakōn on the outer edge, partners generally staying close to each other with the exception of Nora standing with Ren instead of Yang, who's focused on her sister, and Lobo sticking near Ilia when Jaune had followed you.

You do briefly see Ilia trade glares with the dark haired girl but dismiss it as a problem for later, turning to Pyrrha and the white haired girl.

"Pyrrha. You were keeping an eye on Jaune too?" You ask, confirming that she's only carrying her shield and sword with a careful look.

"Hello again." Pyrrha immediately responds, smiling even as the white haired girl scowls at you again. "Yes I was. Thanks for helping him."

"It only cost me an arrow and a few seconds of focus. You're the one who took on a forest full of grimm with nothing more than a shield." You say, thoroughly impressed.

"It wasn't that difficult. I ran into Weiss pretty quickly and there weren't that many grimm." Pyrrha says.

"The two of us were more than capable of handling them." The white haired girl - Weiss - confirms proudly. "Were you talking about a Petra Gigas before?" She asks.

"A stone giant? I guess that's an accurate name, but it must get confusing." You say, recognising the ancient Azlanti words. Oh wait, they probably don't have stone giants on Remnant. A pity, they were both worthy opponents and good neighbours, forming the backbone of the forces that cleansed the Mammoth Graveyard. Few giants were worthy of such respect.

Before Weiss can say anything else a piercing screech makes you all flinch, followed moments later by the feeling of claws raking across your flesh as something collided with Drakōn.

The monster responsible is almost as tall as your eidolon, with a bone white beak-mask, massive claws and spikes on its tail. A wingless, distorted parody of the noble griffon, grown massive and ferocious. Drakōn responds by catching the grimm's head in his maw and shaking it, forcing it to let go and back off as it fights to get free.

"That's an alces!" You yell, sending several arrows into its hindquarters as several of the others open fire. "The runt of the litter. They may not fly but to survive they have to be faster, tougher and meaner."

"No that's a Griffon." Weiss corrects you.

"Griffons have wings!" You retort. "If we cripple even one leg this thin will be easy pickings."

"We don't need to fight it. We already have a relic." Ilia points out.

"And leave the grimm free to hurt whoever it runs into next?" You ask.

"She's right. There's no point fighting these things." Ruby agrees.

"Run and live. That's an idea I can get behind that." Jaune adds.

"Really? None of you see a problem with running away when we outnumber this monster thirteen-to-one?" You demand.

"I'm not running if you're not." Nora says, with a smile. Ren doesn't look happy but agrees with a nod when you look at him.

"Being a Huntress means fighting the grimm to complete the mission." The dark haired girl says when you look at her.

"We were also told to destroy everything in our way." Yang says, pounding her fists together. "I say we fight."

"Sounds like fun." Sun agrees.

The conversation is interrupted by the ground shaking arrival of the golem, lumbering towards Drakōn from the opposite side even as the alces manages to squirm free of his jaws.

"That's what I need you to crack!" You say to Nora.

"Lets kill these gigantes before more show up." Lobo says, pulling a massive blade from his back.

"You have to be kidding me! We should just run now, the dinosaur can buy us time." Weiss yells.

"I am not abandoning Drakōn." You snarl.

The point is made moot when you realise the shaking of the ground is intensifying far more than it should. Pyrrha shouts a warning just before the stone shatters beneath your feet, a gigantic black and white bug thing erupting from beneath you.

As you roll to your feet and grab Ilia you can feel the golem and the alces tearing into Drakōn, failing to suppress a scream as claws rake across your - his back.

Fortunately you hear the alces shriek again as it selects a new target, apparently thinking Drakōn is already beaten. It's mistake.

"With me!" You yell, firing at an opponent that you can't see but Drakōn can. The dust arrow is less effective without proper aiming but judging from the satisfaction you feel from Drakōn and the sound of stone landing on stone you know you've given him space he desperately needs. "If we can get on Drakōn we can turn size and speed against the giant."

You don't hear anyone respond but the sound of nearby gunfire says at least one other person is aiming at the golem.

The dust cloud settles as you reach Drakōn's side, revealing that the bug grimm's emergence had forced the twelve of you to split into three groups - Ruby, Sun, Ren and the other girl are making for a bridge other the northern canyon with the alces hot on their heels, Jaune, Nora, Yang and Lobo are fighting the bug grimm in the ruins and you and Ilia have been joined by Pyrrha and Weiss.

You have just enough time to cast before the dust is gone and you don't have the chance to hide your magic. Just enough time to empower Drakōn with Evolution Surge because every other option is either useless or too obvious.

----------------------------------

Which Relic do you take?
[ ] The Red Knight - A piece known for swift and direct movement, the knight is easily hobbled by opposing pieces
[ ] The Yellow Wizard - One of three advisors to the general, the wizard can create force walls that can either be deployed on the battlefield for offense or in the palace for defense
[ ] The Green Chariot - Pulled by horses, camels or stranger beasts, the chariot is all but unstoppable once it starts moving and considered the strongest individual piece, though it can be avoided by a canny player
[ ] The Black Cannon - Replacing the strong but awkward elephant, the cannon is a powerful but limited ranged piece, capable of firing across the river.

How do you use Evolution Surge?
[ ] Chill - Empower Drakōn's icy nature so the air around him is a weapon
[ ] Enlarge - Double Drakōn's size so the golem's superior reach is meaningless
[ ] Quicken - Grant Drakōn increased speed to epxloit the slowness of the golem
[ ] Spikes - Grow spikes along Drakōn's tail, enhancing his offense and granting him the ranged attack of a manticore.

----------------------------------

A/N: Back again and not going away this time. Rather annoyingly I got sick again, though it wasn't covid this time. Between that and work picking up it's been hard to find free time.

No points can be given out for guessing who your teammates are now, though I think every other combination I seriously considered did come up. You can still get bonuses for guessing your team name, coming up with a better team name or thinking of something better than AVYL for Jaune's team.

It updated! Hooray!

The Wizard because... well.. spellcaster and versatility and Quicken because speedy boi!

Because it's the piece I'm sure of Nora going to pick and I want her in our team

A Godzilla kind of fight? Yes please!

I thought this would be clearer sorry - your team is Xanthe, Ilia, Weiss and Pyrrha. Nora is on team 'not critically important to any plot' with Jaune.

The piece you choose is more about what you (and Weiss) were thinking when you chose the piece - something you have in common.

What is the point of choosing a relic then? Because it's not clear
It's about how Xanthe is mentally approaching being a huntress- are you swift to react? Unstoppably powerful? Versatile but limited? A potent oocp? This is a choice both she and Weiss made that's the same, which will reflect on how they interact.

Also because I rewrote this twice in the last week and I sacrificed clearer meaning to fit in the in universe pathfinder chess/risk hybrid.

I wonder how long it will take for people to really start thinking about how Xanthe uses different names for all the Grimm.

Xanthe: I need to keep my magic a secret or someone will try to assassinate me. This'll be easy, right?
Also Xanthe: Golems are made by magic (and are also infuriatingly resistant to magic. If only I had an adamantine hammer or something).

Hey I just thought about "our" semblance maybe it could be described as calling on nature and adding their features to people on drakon?

Versatile and just vauge enough to give us wiggle room regarding specifics while being unified enough to make sense.

If you'd gone with the 'Partial Shapeshifting' option for your Beacon application that'd essentially be what you were doing, but you guys chose to have Summoning down as your Semblance instead. Anyway, try not to double post in the future, you can just edit the first post.

The Following of the Watching Wolves

For as long as they can remember, generations of Kellid nomads have led a nomadic way of life, moving constantly across the land in accordance with the region's changing seasons, plant cycles, and animal migrations. In the hoarfrost‑covered plains between Irrisen and the Sarkoris Scar, where the mightiest nomads call themselves Mammoth Lords, these wandering communities are known as followings. The Watching Wolves is one such following, formed after the failure of the Second Mendevian Crusade and the fall of Sarkoris as an alliance between broken followings, scattered clans and furious refugees.

The stories told by the Watching Wolves divide history into four eras - urith; the ancient past when gods freely roamed Golarion, encompassing such titanic events as the Imprisoning of Rovagug, Earthfall, Aroden's Ascension and his battle with Deskari, syorn; the now lost age of wonder, when their followings began and Sarkoris became a nation, an age that ended with the death of Aroden and opening of the Worldwound, ethgir; the age of endless struggles and battles against demonic invasion from the Worldwound that spanned four generations and marech; the new age of hope that began with the death of the Demon Lords Deskari and Baphomet and the sealing of the Worldwound.

The Watching Wolves came to be in the final days of the syorn, when Sarkoris was utterly consumed by the demonic invaders. Desperate refugees fleeing flame and plague found no succour in Ustalav or Belken and were instead forced to make for the distant safety of Varisia, Lastwall and even Irrisen. The hordes of demons that followed were greeted by the warriors of the Realm of the Mammoth Lords, an informal alliance rapidly forming of Kellids, giants and others that refused to yield their ancestral lands to the invaders.

But as long as the Worldwound lingered there were always more demons. And while Deskari cared far more for the battle with Mendev in the east there was no shortage of forces aligned with other demon lords eager to break though to the rest of Golarion. Every battle reaped an unsustainable toll from the Mammoth Lords, with many followings declaring the Thunder Steppe already lost, seeking safer lands on the other side of the Tusk Mountains.

But not all were willing to flee. Many sought to protect their land, to uphold their ancient duty. Others sought vengeance on the demonic invaders that had destroyed Sarkoris or sought to aid in the most righteous possible cause. The Watching Wolves were born when the god caller Telika looked on a battle that had ended many days past and seen that even the simple beasts of the land were avoiding the tainted flesh of fallen demons and watching the shadows for new foes. She went to those who had survived the battle and convinced them to unite with those who she'd guided through the Worldwound.

The first of the Watching Wolves hailed from the following of the Frostpelt, the following of the Starshadow, the Bloodstone Clan, the plains of Belkzen and the army of Mendev. They endured the grinding battles of the ethgir by accepting any who were willing to battle against the demonic threat and have found themselves as the largest following of the Thunder Steppe as the marech dawns.

You know well the stories of Vela Giantslayer and her icewyrm companion, of how a monster from beyond the stars broke the Bleak Bears and countless more. Tales of the syorn that brought hope and strength in the ethgir, even as you memorised the names of the fallen and how they'd found the Wolves.

Today
Even in the marech the Watching Wolves have continued to recruit any willing to fight for their ancestral lands, whether they roam the Thunder Steppe or the Sarkorian equivalent. The fifth generation of Wolves is coming of age in a hopeful land as the following swells to numbers unmatched throughout the ethgir. The following makes no distinction between those born to their ways or those who adopted them later in life, instead focusing on the battles to come and the promise of a tomorrow untainted by demons, whatever may come with it.

Religion
This needs a post of its own, but most of the Watching Wolves follow an ancient animistic faith with a large pantheon of gods and spirits that easily incorporates the beliefs of any who join the following - notably what the Wolves call 'the Crusader Gods', a group that includes Iomedae the Inheritor, Shizuru the Solar Samurai and Ragathiel the General of Vengeance.

Magic
The chief magical tradition of the Watching Wolves is primal, drawing on the teachings of Sarkorian druids and the wisdom of countless generations. Divine magic is often found among those hew to the teachings of a single god and Occult secrets have been passed down by the Songsingers and Spirit Guides for generations. Arcane magic is rare among the following, currently restricted to the Ilverani wizard Tessara and his two students.

Houses
Those not of Kellid descent look on the followings of the Land of the Mammoth lords as a collection of tribes following a single leader, a Mammoth Lord defined by strength alone. The truth is much more complex.

A following can be a trio of families led by a single wise elder or a grand assembly of clans led by a council of the strong. In either case the size of the following is dictated more by the size of their herds than the strength of their warriors.

When a following and their herd grows too large, Houses inevitably form. For the Watching Wolves Houses are a largely informal form of organisation for when they must split up - Mammoth House remains with the bulk of the herd, Bison House escorts travellers or visits friendly settlements in the name of trade and Smilodon House is a war party.

Mammoth Lords
The leaders of the Watching Wolves consist of the five Mammoth lords and their trusted advisors. This includes:
Mammoth Lord Rorek Blacktusk, main leader of Smilodon House and a Kellid warrior known for his ability to transform into a mammoth in battle. Well known for his unending rage and unbreakable will.
Mammoth Lord and Huntmaster Inkit, the best hunter in the following and always accompanied by Vecki the Dire Wolf. Often leads Bison or Mammoth House.
Mammoth Lord Molly Freeman, a halfling that was once enslaved in Cheliax and embraced the Wolves when they freed her. Main leader of Mammoth House
Mammoth Lord Rolan the Nameless, a paladin of Iomedae and former Mendevian Crusader. One of the only Wolves to ride a horse into battle, Rolan is known for their courage, honour and unspeakable shame. Often leader of Smilodon and Mammoth House.
Mammoth Lord Delbera Ashbeard, a Grondaksen dwarf that sought the sun and found it with the wolves. She fights with axe and hammer and speaks with traders as if she's known them all ehr life. Main leader of Bison House.
Bloodspeaker Mortok, an aging Kellid druid and greatest of the following's spellcasters.
Tessara Ilverisara, an Ilverani elf who joined the following after his master died among them. Insists that he is an envoy of the Twilight Speakers rather than a member of the following, a lie he almost believes.
Songsinger Morveg Ashtongue, an elder of mixed Ulfen and Kellid descent who keeps the stories of urith, syorn and ethgir alive.

Other Wolves of Note
Kine Firefinger - Your mother, a herbalist and healer well practiced in the teachings of Immonhiel. Has survived to her forties despite a lame foot.
Galder Belostar - Your mother's father, one of the first Sarkroians born into the following. He made sure you knew of Ciallaithe Sixeye and the other gods of the Bloodstones.
Kaster Proudhorn - Son of Rorek Blacktusk and one of your peers. Grows the antlers of a moose in battle.
Sidke Frostheel - One of your peers, a Kellid known for her skill with the herds. Rides the mammoth Gesel into combat.
Tibeth Quicktongue - One of your peers, a chelaxian halfling known for his fast spells and faster mouth.
Emek Brawnbrow - One of your peers. Strong but a little simple. Sweet in his own way. You're not interested.
Gisha Ashbrow - Emek's grandmother. Knows a lot of rituals and has ideas about the future of the following.
Ingra Sunplait and Kurga Moonplait - an orc and dwarf couple. They taught you how to craft bows and arrows.
Verk Twelveteeth - A goblin that's an excellent archer but a poor hunter. Has a lot of children, most of which he sired.
Azira Duskeye - One of your peers and a close friend, Azira left the Amethyst Eagles, his original following, to join the Wolves. He left when it became clear the Eagles only considered death an acceptable way to leave their following. Even after three years you still wonder if he's alive. And what might have been...

Deceased Wolves
Artok Skywatcher - Your father, a peerless hunter utterly devoted to the teaching of the Pursuants. He died days before you were born, keeping a tainted and maddened god from reaching the unprepared camp.
Jerda Blackbow - Your father's mother, a Kellid warrior and the one who taught you how to string a bow. Died when you were young.
Jorun Scythia - Your father's father, an Ulfen champion of Magdh and the Norns who followed his destiny to the Wolves. Died before you were born.
Ylva Xanthesdottir - Your mother's mother, an Ulfen from the distant land of Iobaria. Died shortly after you freed Drakōn.
Telika the Wise - The first Mammoth Lord of your following and the only other god caller ever to join the Wolves. Was bonded to Ciallaithe Sixeye, an owlbear spirit known for her ferocity and wings of frozen mist.
