Just for a starter, without improved trap, you would have only one turn of no-retaliation, meaning that
- He would have retailated with the axe, who deals 3 damage
- He would have retailated with the area attack, who deals 1 damage to everyone.
As the system works, enemies don't have turns. So, their only way to deal damage is retailation.
To retaileate, they need to be:
- In range
- Knowing where the enemy is.
That's why ambushes are so strong: they cannot retaileate.
Otherwise, you exchange damage with each other.
I'm from cellphone, so I cannot make examples, but basically the key point is:
- If you want to avoid damage, use longer range than you enemy or take them from an unexpected angle (ambushes, sneak attack, traps to blind them.)
You already made your decision before this moment. You are ready and he's not. He has the arrogance typical of thugs who have never fought someone at their level.
He could be a Demon, as Goldman called them, but he's cocky as a normal human.
And it will be his downfall.
"I'll just say one thing, mister Nathair."
You can see his tension, the same you saw in the pits before the opening fight.
Your hand drift slowly toward your knife.
"Cheese."
Confusion passes on his face, before the floodlights of your Casino, moved and oriented precisely on his position, blind his face.
11+1+1 ("From the Blindspot triggered).
John deals 3 damage to Nathair and deals a debilitating wound. Nathair is at 5/8
"I'll …" He was probably trying to tell "I'll kill you", but your plan was already in motion. Before he could end his phrase, the left side of his face spreads against the floor, the dampened "bang" hardly audible due to the silencer on John's rifles.
It was an injury that would have killed a normal man but on a Demon? Without Goldman's information, you would have relaxed, giving him enough time to respond.
Instead, you'll press your advantage as much as you can.
9+1=10
Ernesto deals 2 damage to Nathair and destabilizes him, who will deal -1 damage in his next retaliation attack.
Nathair is at 3/8 and heavily wounded. Ernesto is scared.
You switch your butterfly knife and you stab Nathair straight in the neck. You could see bone and muscle on the left side of his face already growing back, trying to close the injury.
You don't know if demons could feel shocked or pain as you do, but his left hand goes toward his neck and he takes a step back from the two attacks. Between the light and the injuries, it's no surprise that he appears disoriented.
But in the adrenaline rush of the fight, you glance at his right hand, which is not empty anymore.
An axe of black metal, with a fleshy handle from which arteries and veins branch off, fusing with Nathair's hand, pulsing like an alien organ.
Your eyes meet Nathair's and on his face, you don't see pain or confusion, but only one emotion, clearly visible on his grinned teeth, exposed from the missing portion of his face.
Joy. Bliss.
In that eye, you can't recognize the gaze of a man, but something behind the flesh is gazing at you.
And in your heart, while chills pass through your spine, you know that something is promising you one thing.
Agony.
You take a step back, while his axe is rising. He's weakened by your aggression, but he's still alive and now he's not blinded anymore by the light.
8+1=9. Fulvia's Guards deal 2 damage to Nathair, who retaliates against the closest opponent, which is Ernesto.
Nathair is at 1/8, Ernesto is at 8/10 and in pain.
From his blindside, a symphony of gunshots comes, with bullets hole opening on his chest, leg and arm. But he doesn't sway and neither does his axe.
You barely dodge the blow, which only grazes your shoulder, but the promise of Agony was abided by. Pain runs from the small cuts, running through every muscle of your arm. You clench your teeth and get your gun out. But someone anticipates you.
10+2=12. Mercy deals 3 damage to Nathair, who retaliates with an Area attack, dealing one damage to everyone.
Nathair is dead.
Mercy Hp: 6/8→5/8
Ernesto Hp: 8/10→7/10
Felix's Guards: 4/6→3/6, heavily wounded.
Fulvia's Guards 6/6→5/6
In the meanwhile, Mercy has reached the demon back and you watch the scene almost in slow motion.
Mercy pushes the nozzle of her shotgun against Nathair's tight and pulls the trigger.
Without one of his legs, the bearded Demon remain for one instant straight, before crushing hard on the floor, the hand on the axe still raised.
You keep your breath while keeping your gun pointed at the Demon, but you don't see bone, muscle or flesh moving to close the injuries that he received.
You relax your breath.
At that exact moment, the blade of the axe, the fleshy portion connected to the handle, split open.
And the axe screams
As answering that loud noise, the pain in your shoulder worsens and you suffocate with a grunt of pain. Mercy's hands go toward her face, where the livid of her last injury was.
Even Fulvia and the others, who hadn't received a single wound, clench their teeth.
But the worst effect was on Felix and the others, who were the most injured.
Carlos, the most injured among Felix's men, starts screaming in synchrony with the axe, before falling to the floor, motionless.
When the noise ends, the silence sounds quieter than ever.
You get close to the Demon's corpse, to confirm his death. You try your best, but you can't help the feeling of fear.
Softly, you can hear Nathair's laughs, not coming from his mouth, but from the axe.
"I like you, Ernesto. This job is so boring, sometimes, but not today."
The body and the axe melt like bloody wax, red smoke rising during the process.
"I can't wait for the second round." He says, before melting into nothing.
No blood, no flesh, nothing. Except for some bullet holes, nothing remains of Nathair.
You take a depth breath.
You won and you know that the victory would have been more expensive in other circumstances.
But while watching Carlos's corpse, you can't help feeling that it was way closer than you like.
Nathair, the Man with the Axe
Named Character
Traits:
Demon: A demon is a creature who follows his own rule. When he reaches 0 HP and he wasn't killed in a specific way, he will return after ??? turns.
Unnatural toughness: Flesh, bone and muscles are way more than what they appear (1 armour, occult).
Rejoice in pain: when fighting against Nathair, you cannot choose to receive less damage as a consequence of the roll.
The gift of the Snake: Injuries dealt by Nathair are perceived as worse than they are.
The eyes of the Snake: Enemies in close combat with Nathair are prioritized and are scared for the first round of combat.
Ah Agony, it does my heart good to see it's still as existentially terrifying as ever. He's not going to give up, and whoever he works for is probably going to be even more messed up in the head than him. We're going to need a lot more occult research.
(Mercy Hp: 6/8→5/8 (Fight with Nathair)→6/8 (Healing))
(Felix's Guards HP: 4/6→3/6, heavily wounded.)
(Fulvia's Guards HP: 6/6→5/6)
(John's HP 7/8→8/8 (Healing)
(Agony Lore, Level 0 added to Lore List.)
(??? clock advance 1/???→2/???)
Even though the day was sunny, with no clouds in the sky, the atmosphere inside the Casino was dark. Inside your office, Felix was sitting on the chair in front of your desk. He did his best to clean up but still looked like shit. The last week was very heavy on him.
"When it's scheduled Carlos' funeral?" You ask, looking at him.
You lost other companions in the years, but Carlos is your first loss since you open your Casino. Killed by a magical fuck that promised you that he will be back. You clench your fist at the thought.
"In two days, boss. I already contacted his family and send them some money."
You nod. "What do you think, Felix?"
He breathes heavily: "We need to rest. First the Jackals, then the demon … I can call some friends and get another man on the team. The time to heal our injuries and we'll get back to work. If I may suggest … "
You gesture him to keep going: "I know some good folks that could work with us, improving our numbers. If that thing will be back, he could find more guns waiting for him."
You nod. Nathair wouldn't be introduced by a message next time. If he attacks you while your men are away …
"I'll keep your idea in mind, Felix. Thank you for your help."
Once you are alone, you fall deep in thought.
One of your staff reported that one of the clients was going toward the basement. He was stopped in time, but you don't buy that "he was looking for the bathroom". You would bet that he's snooping around for the Pale Zenith, but at least now you know where they are trying to get and you told Fulvia to pay more attention to who gets close to it.
Goldman is doing his research on the two demons and maybe with your help, you can speed up the process.
You still have the books in your basement. If the Demon is a creature of the occult, adding that kind of knowledge to your arsenal would help in your next fight against him.
He found you ready once, he will find you ready again. If you didn't find him before, of course.
New Long Term Goals added.
QM Note: A couple of options changed and a lot more got added. The list is not exhaustive, but I come up with these. A lot of options, but there are also a lot of approaches)All the actions, unless specify differently, are Small risk, Standard effect, Variable cost
Casino Management: (These actions can be performed only by the Main or a Named Character)
[ ] Go shopping (Tongue): Now you have finally some good furniture, but you still can get something better.
[ ] Recruit more staff (Tongue): The Casino has some living quarters and you own some empty houses near it that would be a great place for living close to work. See if any folk is interested in working for you.
- [] Specify who you want to recruit. (QM Notes: You won't get another Named Character in this way)
[ ] Plan a great event (Brain, Long Term project): The Casino is working fine, but a special event is a good way to get publicity and an influx of cash. It will take some time to have everything in place, tough. (Plan an Event to get Reputation or Funds. Starts a sub-vote) [ ] Contact Mercy's friend (Tongue): Alex, an ex-colleague of Mercy, deals in weapons. You can get normal stuff or, if you have the money and the luck, the good stuff.
Competition:
[ ] Get a man inside one of your competitors (Tongue): you know that your Casino staff isn't the most loyal and you expect some of your "colleagues" to have the same issues. You can try to exploit it with some bribery, but it remains a risky endeavour.
- [ ] Select a target. (This action is Risky with Limited Effect for The Pale Zenith and with Limited Effect for The King in Yellow. You don't think you can afford someone from the Eclipse
[ ] Break some legs (Fists, Risky): People can't get to work if they cannot walk to work. Attack some of the staff and maybe they'll start looking for employment somewhere else. But they may also decide to repay you the favour if they find out.
- [ ] Select a target
[ ] Hacking the security (Brain, Risky): A basic firewall is expected, but it wouldn't be the first security system you break into and won't be the last. You may get some private info or some money. Or be traced before you can pull the plug.
-[ ] Select a target
[ ]Break and entering (Shadow, Risky): Security can be so much tight and something may always pass. A bug in the office, for example. A goldmine of information, but a risky thing.
- [ ] Select a target. (The difficulty is Desperate for the King in Yellow and the Eclipse)
Ernesto Specials: (Only Ernesto can do these actions)
[] Plan and testing (Brain): Your strong suit is to be prepared and to be prepared, you need time. Do the research and make the preparations before striking (Useful for triggering "No room for errors").
-[ ] Select a Competition Target.
[ ] Talk with Dave: Goldman is cooperative for the moment. You don't trust him completely, but you don't think he's going to double-cross you without a valid reason.
- [ ] Talk about what?
Occult Action:
[ ] Read a book (Occult): You have several options on your new bookshelf. Pick one and start to see if it can help with your ghost problem.
- [ ] Select a Book
[ ] Find more info on demons (Occult): While Dave is doing his research, you can approach things from another angle. This may speed up the process.
[ ] Look for the Snake Cult (Brain): The Snake is something that you heard a lot, both by Nathair and from the other explorations. It's your best lead and maybe you can confirm a connection between it and the Eclipse.
[ ] Dig for Occult Info (Brain): Dark web, forgotten message boards, old newspaper: it's impossible that you won't find a lead on your Occult issues by performing a deep search. Start looking and see what you find.
Exploration:
[] Explore the City (2d6 flat for quality): The City is an interesting place with interesting places where interesting things happen. Or if you are unlucky, you get in the wrong place and at the wrong time.
-[] (Optional): Specify what you are looking for.
[] Explore the Desert (2d6 flat for quality, Risky): If voices of strange things happening inside the City aren't enough, there are plenty of legends murmured of what could be found in the desert around it. Or what can find you. You wouldn't be the first.
Follower's Actions (These actions can be done only by your Followers)
[ ] Recruit more muscles: Felix and Fulvia have contact with other people. They can even find someone reliable or loyal if they are lucky. (Can be used to recruit more Security Guards or replenish losses).

I'm thinking about looking into the Diary this turn. If memory serves, Light Lores were pretty useful against the forces of darkness, and the Diary seems like our best bet for them.
Not exactly: once a group of followers or a character gets to half its maximum HP, it's considered "Heavily Injured". Heavily Injured characters roll all actions with a -1 and cannot heal naturally anymore, requiring the use of at least one action to recuperate. Then they can heal naturally.
Fulvia's Guards didn't heal this turn because the damage is healed from the next turn after receiving it. So, they will heal at the end of this turn with no problem.

Good idea, but just because it's one difference from the original quest, you cannot use immediately Light and Dark Lore (but you can level them up with no issue).
You need to do a step before, but I can confirm that you have the other book required to take such a step.
Won't tell you which one, of course, but you can guess from the titles.
25 hours until the vote is closed.
One thing that I have procrastinated on was giving you a reward for helping me reach my personal milestone for this quest:
10 threadmarks, 10 pages and 10k words.
The reward I had in mind was giving an opportunity for the most active user in the thread to ask me an OOC question that I'll answer to the best of my abilities (or make the answer on the spot).
However, I decided that in the time before the end of the vote, each of you can ask me such questions.
OOC means that the answer will not give you direct advantages with Ernesto's action (if you ask me "How can we kill Nathair", even if I answer you, I still expect you to spend actions to investigate IC).
So, it's your best chance to get info on things that Ernesto couldn't know.

Started working on a potential plan... currently missing an action for Mercy and I'd like the thread's opinion on the already selected actions before I commit to voting for the plan I'm proposing (focusing on the demon is important, but there's also the possibility that the Pale Zenith is moving against us and we may want to investigate them too...;also, it has no real name as of yet). As for the question... I'll think on the matter for some time before I decide what question to ask QM (provided that what I decide to inquire about is valid, of course)

I'm pushing for us to read that Fundamental Occult Forces book sooner rather than later. It sounds like we need it to actually use Lores, and I want to be able to fight magic with magic, especially given how things are heating up.
[X] Plan Making Forays Into the Occult
-[X] Read a book (Occult): You have several options on your new bookshelf. Pick one and start to see if it can help with your ghost problem.
--[X] Fundamental Occult Forces (Ernesto)
-[X] Dig for Occult Info (Brain): Dark web, forgotten message boards, old newspaper: it's impossible that you won't find a lead on your Occult issues by performing a deep search. Start looking and see what you find. (Ernesto)

After that Demon incident, best we can do is do research, either into the Occult or in playing Where's Waldo with the other casinos. Full Tilt's doing his part for the research, but anything to shed further light in the metaphysical underground would go a long way into planning against it.
I'll close the vote in one hour considering that the winning plan is confirmed. Mostly I'm leaving the hour for the questions.
When the vote closes, I'll need the following rolls:
- Ernesto's Occult for Book Reading.
-Ernesto's Brain for digging into the occult.
- John's Exploration Roll for temples
- Mercy's Exploration Roll for temples.
- Felix's roll (healing is automatic, roll is to see if there's someone with good traits to recruit as Security Guards).
Did we got any EXP for the fight with the demon or its clock finishing?
Whats behind the door in the basement, making the sounds?
Is the Eclipse run by a supernatural/non-human creature?
Is there anything Ernesto, John and Mercy can pull from their past, working in the city, aside from connections?
Any advice for us, going forward?
That's all for now, if they are valid/multiple ones can be asked.
