Well, the current combat situation is the following:
The Jackal's Thug set up barricades to make your life harder, but Felix and his men put up a barrage of fire that pushed them back. So, they lost the protection of it. Thugs take 2 damage and lose the benefits of the barricades, Felix's Guard takes 1. Thugs are frightened.
Mercy tried to push directly with her shotgun, but the bigger one between the thugs take the weapon from the barrel, punch Mercy in the face and steal her weapon. Mercy takes 1 damage and she's disarmed.
John is literally a ghost, finding The Maw distracted while he's filling a bag with cash.
So what John's does is literally shooting him twice and the only reason The Maw is not dead is because he moved his head at the last. Unfortunately, the bullet in the shoulder would make impossible for him to use a gun. But John doesn't have the advantage of surprise anymore.
The Maw takes four damage and becomes Heavily Wounded.
Need three rolls:
- Felix's Guard attack
- Mercy melee fighting to retake her shotgun.
- John Attack on the Maw.
Okay, current combat situation:
- Gunfight between the thugs and the Guards involve damage of both parts. Some thugs get killed, but Felix and his men are wounded.
Thugs get 2 damages and go from 4/6 to 2/6, Heavily Injured. Felix's Guards get one damage and go from 5/6 to 4/6, heavily Injured.
- Mercy gets back his weapon and smash the face of the fucker before getting shot by her own shotgun. Thugs get one damage and fo to 1/6.
- Remaining thugs surrender. Felix and the other keep them under fire, while Mercy goes to check John.
- John keeps shooting the Maw, which is trying to close the distance. He goes from 4/8 to 2/8. I'm not even going to ask for another roll because he's on his last leg and Mercy has arrived.
Meaning that the fucker gets thrown out of the window.
Congrats, you win. I'll write the full update in the next days. I'll have some votes on the loot, so stay tuned.
In the meanwhile, if you want to roll for the other actions of the turn, which are the following:
- Ernesto's Tongue for "Contact Mercy's friend".
- Ernesto's Brain for "Buy some nice things".
It wasn't possible to get to the apartment without getting noticed, something that Mercy and Felix knew. Heavy resistance was expected, but nothing that they couldn't handle.
They entered the apartments, covering each other's shoulders and looking for ambushes. Something that the Jackals could have easily made, but decided to not do, preferring to bunker down on the top of stairs. An advantageous position for sure, but the point was holding it.
(Felix's Guard Attack Roll: 10+1=11. Felix's Guards force the Jackals away from the barricade, receive 1 damage and deal 2, hitting the Jackals' morale. Felix's Guards 6/6→5/6, Jackals 6/6→4/6)
But the difference in training between Felix's men and some self-proclaimed gangster was nothing to shrug off: methodically, they advanced to the ramp of the stair, covering each other and pinning down the thugs. Soon, the Jackals were left with only one option: retreating further inside the apartments and abandoning the barricades under fire. Some random bullet got Carlos, one of Felix's guards, in the shoulder, but except for that, their advance was a full success and the Jackals were clearly in disarray from the attack.
Exploiting the window of opportunity, Mercy tried to go for the killing blow by charging directly at the enemies, ready to fire her shotgun. In an act of heroic courage or desperation, one of the thugs, screaming like a madman, grabbed the weapon, pushing it away from the others before it could be shot. Unbalanced by the recoil and from the enemies, Mercy loses her grip on the weapon for a fraction of a second, enough for the man to snatch the shotgun and bash her face with the butt of it.
"You are really pissing me off" Mercy snarled, taking her brass knuckles from the pocket.
(John Shadow Roll for ambushing: 8+2=10. He finds The Maw out of guard, +1 damage to his next attack and triggering "From the Blindspot").
(John Attack on the Maw: 6+1+1=8. The Maw takes four damages and gets his main arm shot. The Maw 8/8→4/10, Heavily Wounded).
John made no noise, avoiding even floorboards that looked like they could make a creak. Nothing could have forestalled his presence before reaching the main den of the Jackals.
The Maw was inside, nervously filling a bag with cash from an open safe. He had no weapon in reach, too busy getting what he could before escaping.
But he wouldn't have the chance to run away: John raised his gun, aiming for the head. Two shots were fired.
One unexpected movement while he was filling the bag saved him: the bullet directed at the head got stuck in the shoulder and the second straight in the arm. A scream of pain and the limpness in the arm was enough to prove that he couldn't raise a weapon with it even if he had one.
"FUCK!" The man screamed while John keep his gun aimed at him. Several expressions passed in The Maw's eyes: rage, terror, pain.
"If you move a step, I will make sure you won't make a second one", John said.
The Maw laughed at him: "You bastard are going to kill me anyway. I would prefer to take my chance."
"Then be my guest".
Two floors under, the gunfight kept going.
(Felix's Guards Attack: 7+1=8. Deal two damages, take one and keep pushing the Jackals. Felix's Guards 5/6→4/6, Jackals 4/6→2/6)
(Mercy getting her shotgun back: 7+2=9. Retake her shotgun and deal one damage to Jackals. The "Messy" tag affects Jackal's Morale. Jackals 2/6→1/6 and surrender).
Without the protection of the barricade, the Jackals get outgunned and picked one at a time by Felix and the others. A couple of Jackals go down, while the other are more injured than not.
In the meantime, the guy with Mercy's shotgun tried to load it and shot, but he was too slow. In a fraction of seconds, Mercy jumped on him, snatching back her weapon and punching him with her brass knuckles. One punch, two, three … Mercy didn't stop punching until the face of the man was more blood and broken bone than anything else, more similar to an abstract painting than a human face.
That was the last drop for the Jackals.
"STOP, STOP! WE SURRENDER. MERCY!" The remaining gangster put down their weapon and raise their hands.
Mercy breathed heavily, blood staining the sleeves of her jacket and her face. She turned to Felix: "If one of them moves a finger, kill them. I'm going to John." and ran up the stairs.
John was ready, with the finger on the trigger. The Maw was also ready, blood dripping from his useless right arm. The chances for him to win this fight were low, but being killed was a certainty.
For some seconds, the two men looked into each other eyes.
(John's Attack: 7+1=8. Deals two damage to the Maw with the advantage of range without being injured. The Maw 4/8→2/8)
The Maw was able to do just one step, before getting shot in the leg and the chest by John. With a Thump he hit the floor, still alive but not for long.
"Told you." was John's answer, before turning to the stair, ready to fire again.
"I'm Mercy, put down that thing." he heard, lowering his weapon.
The woman entered the room at looked at the dying man who was trying to raise, before getting a foot on his head. "Stay down. What happened to him?"
"Tried to run faster than bullets and discovered that he wasn't so fast. Why your sleeves are red?"
"Dude thought was a smart idea to steal my shotgun, now his head is a puzzle."
"So we are done here, we just need to take out the trash," John said, lighting a cigarette.
Mercy took off her foot from The Maw, and then he talked straight into his ears: "Unfortunately for you, I'm a woman of my word."
One minute after, the noise of a broken window was followed by the screams of a man. Then a loud impact. Then only quiet.
QM Notes: You won your first combat and dealt definitely with the Jackals. You don't think that another gang will be so stupid to cause you issues after the "demonstration" you did.
Now, the spoils of war.
8 Funds: 6 funds in a briefcase, 2 in random rolls of bills. In the briefcase, a note signed by Henry Poulin: "As agreed upon. Now leave me alone." The briefcase was probably fuller, but the Jackals spent part of it. Henry may appreciate having his money back. But they are not "his" money anymore, right?
[FUNDS] [ ] Return the six funds to Poulin. He will greatly appreciate it.
[FUNDS] [ ] Return three funds to Poulin. He will appreciate it, considering that he has no way to know how much of his money was spent and that you could have kept all of them.
[FUNDS] [ ] Keep everything. No change in the relationship with Poulin.
Drug Lab: Because you didn't smash it and it was far from the gunfight, the Lab is still in good condition and has a supply to produce light drugs. Of course, you need to have someone running the place.
[LAB] [ ] Destroy it. Better to focus on the business you have than to deal with another.
[LAB] [ ] Keep it. (You gain the Location: "Crude Drug Lab", which produces +3 funds and require someone to run the production. The Location has space for four groups of followers.)
"Vanille" Recipe: In the safe, John found a short envelope with the recipe for producing a special drug. From a rapid glance, the production process isn't entirely mundane and one of the "circles" in the recipe has some symbols similar to the one in your basement. John already checked the Lab and talked with the surviving Jackals: the Maw stole the envelope from someone, but he didn't have the time to read it yet.
Surviving Jackals: All of them are injured, but given time they will survive. You need to decide what to do with them.
[JACKALS] [ ] Kill them. Make an example of them. Your known and unknown enemies may catch your drift.
[JACKALS] [ ] Let them go. They will skip town as soon as they can and you will never hear from them again. Who knows, maybe someone will appreciate your mercy.
[JACKALS] [ ] Under different management. You terrorized them enough that they won't go against you. It's not loyalty, but close to it. If you decide to keep the drug lab, you will have workers for it. (Gain Jackal's Thugs as a group of Followers, with the trait "Servile".)
Write-In are an option, just tag me with the proposal and I'll tell you if they are valid and what are the consequences. Vote by plan.
-[X] Return the six funds to Poulin. He will greatly appreciate it.

These thugs don't quite strike me as worth recruiting and a drug lab is a bit of a risky venture, we'd want to be a bit more established before we start anything like that. And friends are a good thing to have.

Contact Mercy's friend (Ernesto, Tongue): 9+2=11. Full Success.
Alex's shop is hidden in one of the streets in downtown the City, several blocks away from your Casino. Nothing too impressive from the outside, but Mercy says that you can trust her and her shotgun is enough proof of quality. You didn't think wise to argue with a woman like Mercy armed with a shotgun like that.
Alex is a beautiful blonde woman, if you ignore that half of her face is disfigured by burns and she's missing her left arm up to the shoulder.
"So, Mercy told you to come here, right? Who are you, her new client?" She asks you from behind the counter, protected by metal bars.
"More like her new associate. I'm the owner of the Hell's Hearth and Mercy is the third owner of it".
The burnt woman gives you a surprised look, before laughing: "Merciless Mercy isn't a fixer anymore. I expect the City's death rate to reduce to a fourth then." She shakes her head: "The bitch decided that she had enough."
Her tone isn't exactly friendly: "Are you a close friend of hers?"
"Yeah, I'm close to her. Otherwise, I wouldn't be here: the issue with being a fixer is that you get unlucky and you and your friend get paid by different people for opposite jobs."
"She threw two Molotov at the guy I was protecting and the flames got me bad enough. At least she put them down after finishing my boss. Then she paid for the surgery and the shop. I'm not sure if I owe her my life or not."
"But yes, you can consider me her close friend and I know better than sell shit to her associates. I still have half face that can be burnt" She laughs at the joke. In her situation, gallows humour is as good as other things.
She exits from the counter, turns the plaque on the front door to "Closed" and gestures for you to follow her into the warehouse behind the shop.
"So, you are in luck. I have just received a new delivery of interesting playthings that you could be interested in." She turns on the light, showing you various weapons on racks.
"I have the normal stuff: assault rifles, shotguns, "hunting" rifles, high calibre pistols … but I also have these cool gadgets."
On the rack close to her, is a sniper rifle from the military, recent stuff and high quality. "Gadgets paid separately, I have the night version of the scope and a silencer. And I don't suggest you buy it for Mercy."
"Why so?" You ask, genuinely curious.
"In case the shotgun wasn't a big enough tell, Mercy prefers when things get personal. Usually, they end also up burned or bloodied, but if you give her a sniper rifle, there's zero chance she will use it. If you have someone else in mind, then it's here."
"If you have someone who decided to piss you off and you want to deliver to him a big Fuck you …" She moved toward another rack, with a grenade launcher. "Only normal ammo, but if you buy it, maybe I'll get you some nice presents on your next visit."
"Do you have this kind of stuff laying around?" You ask, giving a closer look at the grenade launcher. How the hell she gets military-grade stuff?
"I have some contacts, you could say. Something always vanishes from the military warehouses, but I don't buy it always because I don't want to get killed by someone enough determined to get this stuff. You are lucky. And a Mercy friend."
You have 10,5 funds available. Don't spend everything.
Grenade Launcher (3 funds, only for Named Characters, 1 max): (4 damages, close, messy, area)

Silencer (0.5 funds): Add "Silenced"
Night scope (0.5 funds): Better visibility in the dark.
Lightweight Parts: (1 fund): Remove "Braced"
Hunting Rifle (1 fund, 2 if arming a group of followers): (3 harm, far)
Shotgun (1 fund, 2 if arming a group of followers): (3 harm, close, messy).
Magnum (1 fund, 2 if arming a group of followers): (3 harm, close).
Assault rifle (1,5 fund, 3 if arming a group of followers): (3 harm close/far autofire).
SMG (0.5 funds, 1 if arming a group of followers): (2 harm, close, autofire).
Conceleable bulletproof vests (0.5 funds, 1 if equipping a group of followers): (1 armour against ranged weapons).
Write-in if you want a particular weapon. I'll tell you if it's in stock and how much it costs.
Buy some nice things (Ernesto, Brain): 8+3=11. Full Success
You enter the biggest DIY store in the City with your company card and the smile of a kid inside a candy store. You put your hands on several nice things, some of them in limited quantities. The clerk at the register gives you a strange look while passing all your various items, trying to decide if you are planning a terrorist attack, an artistic exposition or both of them at the same time.
But you are paying good and he's not paid enough to question the man with the broken nose and too much money for his own good.
You rent a van to transport all this stuff to your Casino and start working to make something useful. If the Demon wants to mess with you, he is going to be the one who is messed up at the end of the night.
(Result: Upgraded options when you trigger "See that coming". You have one Charge and you can expend it to boost further the effects of one trap. -2 funds).
Defanging the Jackals III
"If I see any of you in the City or hear that you are still here by the end of the week, I'll personally kill you like in the same way I did with your friends". Mercy says slowly to the surviving thugs, who nod frantically and run away as soon as they can. John said that it was better to leave them to go: killing people who cross you is fine, but if you kill everyone, people would fight to the death instead of surrendering. Even she could see that it was the best option instead of having more bodies to manage.
She reached John, who was in the drug lab in the basement, spilling flammable chemicals around.
"Do you think that they will be back?" He asks, dropping the barrel and lighting a cigarette at a safe distance.
"No way. They were trembling as leaves and I have never seen someone run as quickly as them."
John smiled, before launching the cigarette on the barrel. "I'm done here and I know where to find a paid phone to call the firefighters. No reason to burn down the whole building."
Le Orchideè is exactly like the pictures you saw while searching for info on them. And they were five years ago, so no renovation in the meantime. Even you could say small things that could be changed to make the place more interesting, but evidently, mister Pouilin has no interest in it.
Speaking of which, his secretary shows you the way to his office, which .. is average. It's strange, everything is average. Even the secretary has a face that you wouldn't notice in a crowd.
You feel uneasy.
"Mister Villalobos, we finally meet." The accent is enough to identify as an outsider from the City. Even if his greeting is cordial, the man has a poker face that even Goldman couldn't see through, in your opinion.
The sunglasses also help and you cannot think of a reasonable way for someone to wear them inside.
"The pleasure is mine, mister Poulin. Have you heard of me?"
"Oui: I kept an eye on the Jackals to be sure they wouldn't be back for more money, but I don't think they will back from that. Maybe The Maw should have called himself "The Angel": he could have flown instead of falling from the third floor."
He's cracking a joke, but his poker face doesn't crack and his tone doesn't change. The uneasy sensation persists.
"But I'm curious about your visit, mister Villalobos. I don't see a reason for you to be here, frankly".
You take his briefcase and open it in front of you. "I'm here to give back what was yours. This is how I found it, so the Jackals had spent what is missing."
He gives a brief look at the money. You can't read this man in any way: you can't understand if he doesn't care or if he's very good at hiding it.
"You could have kept them." He said, simply.
"I could. But I didn't" It's your simple answer.
He nods and then takes the briefcase. "I own you one, mister Villalobos." He stares at you for a few, long seconds, before smiling. The smile unsettles you a bit more. "Maybe my information on you wasn't as accurate as I thought," he says, cryptic.
Before you can ask something, he indicates the door. "If you have nothing else to say, I think we are done here. I'm a busy man. Au revoir."
You can't exactly recall when you exit the Casino and the wine bottle in your hand. You check the label, whistling. A serious wine from outside the City. You hope it's not how he wants to repay your generosity.
(Result: Reputation with Le Orchideè improved to ???, Poulin owns you one.).
[] Plan Assassin Focus
-[] Sniper Rifle (John)
--[] Silencer
--[] Night Scope
--[] Lightweight Parts
-[] Conceleable bulletproof vests (Mercy, Felix's Guards)
Total cost for plan: 2 + 0,5 + 0,5 + 1 + 0,5 + 1 = 4 + 1,5 = 5,5
[] Plan Elite Guard Focus
-[] Assault Rifle (Felix's Guards)
-[] Conceleable bulletproof vests (Mercy, Felix's Guards)
Total cost for plan: 3 + 0,5 + 1 = 4,5
Decided to put forward two potential plans here. On the one hand, we can arm John with a fully upgraded Sniper Rifle and slant him towards being a long-range assassin. On the other hand, we could arm one of our guard groups with Assault Rifles to give them a general upgrade. Both plans take bulletproof vests for Mercy and our more experienced guard group. Opinions are welcome.
