Buffy the Vampire Slayer Take Two

[X]Poke into your Halloween memories

Especially if we can remember what we did/said to get Cordelia's positive attention.

What can I say? I like X/C.

Then again, I also like X/B, X/W, X/F, X/J, X/D, X/B,W,F,J,D …

[X]Poke into your Halloween memories

Haha, that was very well done. Nice to see the more gentlemanly side of Van Helsing than the "badass".

I definitely want to dwell on the memories as frankly even if he all he gets out of it is Van Helsing's good life habits, some maturity, a well-read doctor's vocabulary, a bit of improvement to first-aid and combat, and Helsing's gentlemanly charisma he'll be doing a lot better as a person. In character it makes sense too as that night was one of the few times Xander shined this early into the series, he got to protect Buffy of all people, and he was eyed up by Cordelia.

I will always be a Xander/Cordelia fan, so if we can manage to maintain that relationship without too much drama until she leaves after Graduation I'd be a happy person. Unfortunately I don't see it lasting beyond that, because Cordy always intended to escape the Sunnydale craziness (even if she got dragged right back in later in LA) and because she did get a bit pouty at playing second fiddle to Buffy being the group leader and admired heroine.

Still, they had a witty and fun relationship beforehand, if she still caves to social pressure and dumps him I've got a great alternative to the Love Spell fiasco that's still in character for Xander, and they'd have a positive high school romance end amicably... which is quite the victory as far as normal Scooby relationships go.

Benefits
You decided to take some time and try to dig further into what had happened during Halloween. When you focused you could remember the weight of another life, though nothing came into focus. You talked with the others about what had happened. Buffy, it turns out, had really improved her french after that night. Amy was more secretive about what happened, simply smiling when asked and saying it had been interesting. You could find memories of taking care of patients, and found yourself much better at following along with what Giles said. Some of it didn't quite jive, but that would have to be given considering you dressed up as someone fictional. Not everything Van Helsing knew could be applicable. You did suggest that an herbs garden was started at Amy's place so you had fresher access to them for spells and wards. Amy was quick to jump at that. It turned out Ms Calendar already had a garden of her own, and was more than happy to give Amy some of her plants.

Buffy was starting to spend more time on patrols, but she never seemed particularly thrilled when you went along with her. Which was funny, you thought you had gotten pretty good at keeping up with her and staying out of the way. Surely the company helped. Giles certainly appreciated you acting as backup, and Willow and Amy both agreed you were in better shape than before.

I'm not sure if this means that Xander's academic knowledge improved, his supernatural knowledge improved, or both. I wonder if his trouble with research and his schoolwork was reduced.

As for Buffy, I'm pretty sure that she's meeting with Angel, but Xander doesn't know that, and him choosing to leave Buffy with no backup feels wrong. Talking it out feels like the best option, as long as we AVOID confrontations, but I'm not sure how to word it to be in-character for Xander.

Yes, I'm really not sure what to do here.

Xander 100% wouldn't leave Buffy to patrol alone, following her secretly is a bit messed up and implies we don't trust her, but confronting her openly about it will either have her double down on hiding it and leave Xander feeling betrayed she doesn't trust him, or she'll tell him she's been slacking on patrols that kill vampires and save innocent lives in order to make-out with her vampire boyfriend he really doesn't like. She's not got a winning answer either way.

I think maybe the best way to word it would be Xander getting concerned he'd done or said something that has Buffy dislike him and not want him around her anymore and bringing it up that way.

That's both in-character for Xander - even if ours has become less insecure, it'd make Buffy know he's noticed she's off with him joining her on patrols and she's making him feel bad, and hopefully it'd guilt her into explaining about Angel in a more apologetic and friendly way that might avoid the conflict. Even if she kept the secret she'd insist she isn't upset with him and is grateful he's coming on patrols to keep her company and help.

It's better we don't approach the confrontation as: "Buffy's hiding something, she's done something wrong, I'm digging into it." Or at least that'd be how it felt to an immature Buffy.

It needs to be less aggressive and more coaxing an explanation out, by reminding her that he's her friend and she's making him feel bad when he's out risking his life and spending his nights helping her.

[X]Confront Buffy about patrol
-[X]Ask her seriously and vulnerably if he's done something wrong or offended her, because she's been really off with him and he'd been looking forward to spending time with her helping on these patrols now that he can.

Edit: Actually, is this the only time he and Buffy really spend together anymore? He may genuinely have cause to worry they're drifting apart and she doesn't want him as a friend anymore, just accepting him as part of the group for the others' sake.

He's also been wanting to go on patrol with her and be useful in this way since episode 1, so it must hurt that after all the effort he put in to be useful to her she's thoroughly unenthused with him coming along.

This looks good. It feels like he was riding high on being useful during Halloween and the knowledge gained from his memories, and Buffy's attitude has made him doubt himself again.

Echoes of Change
You like to think of yourself as a fairly easy going guy. You crack jokes and bring snacks. You come up with things to do together with your friends. So when you decide to try and confront Buffy about what's going on with patrol you do your best to be as low key as possible. You meet up with her after school and invite her to grab ice cream with you. Once you're both settled you speak.

"So, uh. This has been great but, I've noticed you're not super happy with patrol recently. Just wondering what's up with that. I mean, you're the slayer and everything, it's your gig. I don't want to step on your toes or anything. Just hoping I'm not getting in the way or messing up or something."

Buffy straightened immediately. "What? No, no, it's nothing like that. I just." Buffy looked around for inspiration. "I've been enjoying going on my own? I know I used to complain about that, being the one girl in the world and all that, but I got used to it. And now you're there. Which is fine, great even, love spending time with you Xander, no worries there! It's jut different."

"Oh, cool." You nodded your head awkwardly. "So, uh, should I be asking to patrol on my own? Or maybe partner with Willow and Amy instead, so I'm not in your way?" That kinda hurt to think about. But it's cool, you really didn't want to screw up Buffy's patrols.

"No, no, it's fine, it's fine. I just need to get used to it again, that's all!"

Except you had been going with her for a while, and it seemed that her dissatisfaction with your presence was new. So you had only started irritating her more. That stung. You still nodded. You were going to be cool about this. You were trying to be a good friend. If Buffy wanted alone time, you could give her that.

You headed over to hang out with Amy and Willow. Willow had blue hair when you turned up, much to her worry. It seems Amy had been having a lot of fun figuring out small spells and potions she could use that did nothing useful, "just for practice," she'd promised. It seemed like a pretty good idea. She could use her magic that way without causing problems from using more serious spells. It looked fun too, and maybe some fun was what you needed now.
