Buffy the Vampire Slayer Take Two

If we can pick anything, then we should go with the cringe and shamelessness of a teenager by having him dress up as an idealized version of himself! The reactions before, during and after Halloween would be funny and it is something I think Xander would plausibly do. I do not care about skill retention. This is a perfect choice narratively as the kind of dumb thing a teenager would do.
I really don't see Xander dressing up as the idealized version of himself. James Bond or Batman, yes, but not himself. For one, my impression is that Xander has pretty low self-esteem so he's more likely to fantasize about being someone else instead. Two, dressing up that way and telling people that he's dressing up as an idealized version of himself would be like writing a Gary Stu SI fanfic and then having people who actually know you in real life read it.

[X] Clint Barton (Earth-616)

I might change my vote if someone comes up with an option I like better. From what little I know about comics Clint, he's a depressed disaster so Xander might identify with him, and having a long-range attacker who can also put up a fight in close combat would be useful. Hopefully, someone stops him from killing the transformed kids though. Did Willow stop Soldier Xander from using his rifle on the kids in canon?

[X] Ranma Saotome

This is a costume I like for being something reasonably specific to what a nerd in the 90s might want to do, though I guess that depends on if Xander's the sort of nerd who's into anime. Well, maybe he read the manga. Japanese comics are comics.

[X] William T. Riker

Smart, suave, confident, a ladies' man - I think bearded Riker could be an excellent example for Xander.

I think the nature of this quest will (and this is a good thing) disallow any high end tech or magic shenanagins from working after the spell is broken.

Knowing how to make a star trek phaser won't be any use, as the spell is no longer modifying physics to allow it to operate.

So, real life skills and attitude/perspective that we can get from tv or comics that would be useful to Xander to have a few memories of...

Barton is a good choice from what little I know, maybe something else will come to mind.

[X] Clint Barton (Earth-616)

I was always under the impression that Xander got more from the "Soldier" costume than the others did, because it was the most generic and he went partially as himself... just himself as a soldier. If he went as "Dr Harris" for example, I'm pretty sure he'd get medical knowledge, while if he went as Superman he'd barely retain anything.

Also unless you're actively trying to retain the skills and knowledge with practice and reinforcement then you lose it over time, Xander had lost almost all his soldier knowledge by the later seasons. Though whether that was just poor writing or an effect intended from the start is unknowable.

Personally, I think a costume Xander would like would be "Van Helsing". It'd be an amusing snipe at Angel, demonstrating how important his evil-fighting is to his identity, wanting to be a supernatural James Bond type, and it'd give him a lot of knowledge about the supernatural and fighting monsters/vampires.

Plus, Van Helsing is an existing story in the setting, has a well-known mythos, isn't a "geeky" costume that'd get him bullied (remember comic-books and manga aren't remotely well-known or cool yet), and might've had some truth to it as Dracula exists and Spike complained about him publishing that book himself.

It strikes a nice balance between scholarly and fighter and would fit Xander to a tee, plus being something teens and even demons would be aware of as a pretty famous character. It wouldn't even be hard to add to his costume by asking to borrow a couple of bits from the Scooby war-chest like a hand-crossbow, because it'd be a good excuse to carry a back-up weapon that night if something goes after the kids.

The most recent incarnation (of the many versions) of the character by this point in the timeline would be the movie "Bram Stoker's Dracula" from 1992 with Anthony Hopkins.

Yes but what can he do? Like literally I don't know, if seems to differ depending on incarnation. What role does this help Xander fulfill in the group that no one else does?

As you say it depends on the version you're going with.

The generalities between the incarnations are that he has skill as both a doctor and a scientist, that he has a great knowledge of the supernatural and how to track them, that he has great capability with guns and crossbows, expertise with a fair few melee weapons, that he's got an iron will, and generally being a man who started off as a normal human and trained himself to the peak of one to defend humanity from monsters.

Now depending on how the author rules it, he could lean more towards the scholarly benefits of the older version or more towards the increasingly martial modern versions.

The oldest version was a lawyer, a philosopher, and had a string of appellations to his name like MD, PhD, etc.

While the modern version is more of a supernatural James Bond who can put a crossbow bolt through a vampire's heart from 100 paces with little trouble, knows exactly how to disrupt this ritual they've just stumbled on, and can smell the distinctive scent of a random demon in this sewer tunnel.

I imagine a lot of it would be based on how Xander himself imagines Van Helsing to be, but it's best that the incarnation is an "average" of all of them somewhere in the middle.

As far as roles go, I'm not entirely sold on forcing Xander into one, but the Scoobies don't have a doctor, they don't have someone beyond Giles who knows demons - who often needs to research first, and this provides Xander with the expert knowledge of how to train himself into better shape, how to wield a variety of melee and ranged weapons, and gives him encyclopaedic knowledge of various ancient cultures and monsters.

I still feel like it's just a combination of Buffy's and Giles' roles. And I keep going on about roles simply because I think it makes for a better story. Also, wouldn't Van Helsing's law and medical experience be severely out of date?

I don't mind doubling up on roles a bit because (1) a single person cannot do everything and (2) what happens if the main person for that role is out of action? Having two people who can research will let the group search Gile's collection faster. Having two people who can fight allows the Scooby Gang to attack on two different fronts or have one person attack while the other person plays defense. It should also hopefully ease Buffy's mind if one of her friends can defend himself AND help defend her other friends.

That said, I don't really like trying to get magic for Xander like I've seen being posted a couple of times. It feels like that role is thoroughly covered by Ms. Calendar and Amy (and possibly Willow? I really have no idea how Willow is spending her time.)

I find the idea of a story where Xander is able to help his friends in their area of specialty appealing.

Query: If you are talking in terms of roles, what does Barton bring to the table that Xander is likely to keep with him) that is not solely a copy of Buffy's role?
Edit: Oh I saw
"He's amazingly skilled with a bow which is a role no one else in the group has"
I was thinking in terms of "combat" "research" "casting magic stuff"

In terms of "roles" there really isn't a direct supernatural-related role that Xander can do that isn't covered by Buffy, Willow, and Giles.

One issue that the scoobies do frequently struggle with in canon is finances - none of Buffy, Willow, or Giles hold down a job well, and the episodes where it honestly seems like they take the biggest Ls without any recovery are episodes like Doublemeat where they don't really come to a satisfactory conclusion to their financial issues. Xander's construction gig is steadier and probably better paying than anything anyone gets after Giles is fired as librarian until season 7.

I always felt that, in a strange way, Xander was the most adult of all the characters sometimes. Later in the series that is. I wish the writers had actually leaned into it instead of utterly wasting him though.

The funny thing is -and I'll have to find the quote for it- Xander was actually intended by Joss Whedon to be an every-man who would wind up growing into a hero character as the show progressed and would've eventually been paired with Buffy. He was an audience-avatar to an extent.

Somewhere along the way, either due to Xander working as great comedic relief where none of the other characters really did or Angel/Spike being too beloved as romantic partners by the fanbase, that just never really happened.

I've often felt the writers just didn't really know where to take him? In canon he didn't have a role. Charitably he could be called the loyal emotional support or the guy with common sense, but his main thing was being worse to make the girls look better, being the comedic relief, and being willing to challenge the group when they were being shit to each other - and he didn't even always do that.

His main "thing" Joss insisted upon was that he wouldn't have powers, magic, smarts, or even be that fit. I know at one point Nicholas Brendan (his actor) was getting too fit around Season 2/3 and was told to stop exercising and be more of a "slob" in order to keep the role, because Xander being attractive or capable meant fans would question why he was always ignored by the girls or couldn't contribute much.

To a degree it feels like the writers were scared that empowering Xander or giving him too much development would make Buffy less of a female empowerment story and just become another "super-friends" series. Buffy always needed to be admired by and blatantly stronger than Xander or it'd mess with their message to an extent. I disagree obviously, but it was the 90s so I can understand why they went overboard trying to sell it.

Oh well, I tried. I am looking forward to Van Helsing now. I wonder how Dracula would react. Maybe he'll show up early.

I think that at the very least Spike will react because he canonically hates that book and all follow-up media about it - he rightfully blames it for "half the bloody world" knowing how to kill vampires and a number of their weaknesses.

He also has a very amusing and petty rivalry with Dracula which might come up. They were old rivals and first met when Dracula got annoyed with Spike, Drusilla, and Darla for slaughtering gypsies he patronized in his lands after Angelus was cursed by them.

They met a few times after that over the years, including Spike loaning him £11 he never got back, but after Dracula wrote "Bram Stoker's Dracula" and became a legend he bought into his own hype and stopped bothering with the rivalry. Undoubtedly Spike was also annoyed Dracula made himself out to be the "biggest bad" and unofficial king of all vampires as far as modern people are concerned.

The funny thing is that Xander in canon had a weird friendship with Dracula that grew every time they met. They even spent a few months travelling together and Xander taught him how to ride a motorbike. It'd be neat if that bond might feature a bit more in this AU thanks to him having a bit of Van Helsing in him.

Halloween
There was a new costume shop that had popped up in Sunnydale that you all decided to go to to look for costumes. Buffy was immediately drawn to a victorian era costume, while Amy picked out a kitsune costume. You spent quite a bit of time rummaging through the accessory bin looking for something to keep your title as the two dollar costume king. You find a cheap toy stethoscope, and instantly your mind starts turning. A doctor costume is boring, but Van Helsing is a kind of doctor. You could wear a long coat, stethoscope around the neck, and a couple of your stakes. Bam, costume.

The best part about Halloween was being told that most demons and other such beings native to earth tended to take Halloween as a holiday. The more prideful ones avoided humans on Halloween entirely to avoid being mocked for wearing "costumes" and not being taken seriously. While there may be plenty of magical pranks around Halloween, the chances of something serious happening were slim to none. You could just relax and focusing on collecting the candy as you shepherded the kids you were assigned to around.

Abraham Van Helsing liked to pride himself on being an educated man. He kept an open mind in his pursuit of knowledge, and was well aware of the things that lived beneath the notice of most humans. He had dedicated himself to aiding those that were plagued by demons they didn't understand, offering his educated opinion and care to protect and heal. Never before, however, had he found himself in such circumstances as this. The entire street was awash with creatures, demonic and otherwise, running amock. Innocents screamed in horror as they were torn apart. Everywhere he looked there was vast confusion and chaos.

How could this have possibly happened? The last thing he recalled was working with a team to track down Dracula. Now he was in a completely unfamiliar town facing a horde of demons far larger than he had ever considered being possible. He would have preferred to take the time to analyze the situation further, but he could see yet another innocent being attacked. Abraham swiftly stepped in and drove the demon off before leading the man to a nearby house. The man took the advantage to run.

"Xander! Xander!" A spirit charged at Abraham. He was quick to reach for the crucifix he wore around his neck. Restless spirits were never pleasant to deal with, tied to the mortal plane as they were and unable to move beyond whatever drove them. "Xander, what's going on?" Oh dear, was this spirit born in this chaos? Too confused by what happened to pass on? "Miss, I am afraid you have died."

"What?"

"You have passed on."

"No, no, I couldn't have. I was just-wait." The spirit looked around. Abraham waited patiently. Perhaps this would be relatively simple. "All these people. They're-they're their costumes! Xander, what did you dress as?"

"I am Doctor Abraham Van Helsing, not Xander," Abraham corrected patiently.

"No, that's your...wait." The spirit looked around. "The costumes. Everyone's turned into their costumes!" She turned back to him. "Xander, we have to get Buffy and tell Giles!"

Well, that was an interesting conclusion to reach. Abraham hummed in thought studying the place around him. If these were, indeed, all people in costumes, that would explain how there was such a large horde of demonic creatures when he had never experienced such before. It was curious to think of himself as a costume, but perhaps this was set in the future, when he was well known in books for his acts. That was never something he had intended, and he had little thought as to how such was possible. It felt good to think of himself as a strong enough influence for someone to wish to dress as him in the future.

"Buffy!" the spirit cried. She darted through the crowd to where a victorian lady was wandering in fear through the streets. Another victim. Abraham was swift to follow after the spirit. As the lady was costumed as a human, she was one of the more vulnerable victims in the area. The lady stared at them fearfully. "Who are you? Where am I?"

"I am Doctor Abraham Van Helsing, at your service madam," Abraham said politely. He took her hand and gave it a brief kiss. "It is dangerous on the streets right now. I believe this spirit knows of a safe location where we can go?"

"We could hole up at Buffy's home," the spirit offered.

"Good. Lead on then." Abraham kept himself alert as they traveled, doing his best to redirect anything that came near them. Buffy, as the spirit insisted she was called, was terribly scared. He was unclear why the spirit had thought that such a dainty lady could be of any use. Surely seeking out others that knew how to break whatever spell had transformed people would be far more useful.

"Buffy" wasn't taking the revelation of being a costume well. Her costume was from much further back, a more superstitious and fearful time. Abraham was not surprised she wasn't handling it well as the spirit tried to convince her as if words alone could break the enchantment. Screams for help seized Abraham's attention and he raced outside locating a young woman in a cat costume running for her life. Abraham stepped in to fight the demon and drive it back. "Xander! Thank goodness," the young woman breathed.

Abraham nodded and herded her into the house. "You should be safe here."

"Cordelia!" The spirit rushed over. "Okay, Cordelia, I know this will be hard to take, but you're not a cat, you're in high school with us, we're friends. Sort of."

Cordelia stared at the spirit. "That's nice, Willow. And you went mental when?"

"O-oh! You know who we are?"

"Duh. Why are you asking?"

"Our lady here," Abraham gestured to Buffy, "is under an enchantment turning her into a true lady of the victorian era. I was more fortunate, as the lad Xander dressed as myself, Doctor Van Helsing, and I have more awareness of such dealings."

"You actually think you're a doctor Xander?" Cordelia chuckled.

Abraham smiled and handed his coat over to Cordelia. "For now, I at least have the skills of one."

"And a gentleman," Cordelia said admiringly. She smiled sweetly at him.

"Alright, I'm going to get help," Willow declared. "You guys stay here. If anyone tries to enter, fight them off."

"Fight? I don't know how to do that," Buffy exclaimed.

"Thankfully I do." Abraham straightened up. "Let's work on barricading our current lodgings." Cordelia smiled at Abraham as the three worked to seal off the doors and windows while Willow traveled for help. A scream from Buffy drew the group's attention. Abraham charged down and found a vampire in the doorway. Cordelia perked up. "Oh, Angel! Here to help?"

"I am," Angel said. "What's going on?" Buffy retreated back to hide by Abraham. He patted the poor girl sympathetically. "An enchantment to bring costumes to life. Cordelia here is the only one unaffected."

"That's what happens when you get a proper costume from a real place instead of the local discount store," Cordelia said proudly.

"You're all safe then?" the vampire asked.

"As long as you remain outside, yes," Abraham agreed.

"What? You're leaving him out there?" Cordelia exclaimed.

"As charming as this creature is, he is a killer," Abraham said coldly.

"What?" Angel gave a confused smile. "I thought-Buffy. You know I'm here to help you guys."

"I do not know you sir," Buffy said quietly. Angel frowned.

"If you truly wish to help, you can fight the beasts outside the house," Abraham pointed out. "You do not need to come in to help." On cue the sound of a window breaking was heard, and Abraham whirled around to go and deal with it. Thankfully it was one of the smaller creatures he suspected had been a child, and was fairly easy to throw back out of the house. He heard Buffy scream and raced back to the front, just in time to catch the silly girl running off into the night. "Buffy!" Abraham rapidly ran after her. What had happened to cause her to flee the house?

It was slow chasing after the girl. So many people were being attacked, and Abraham felt the need to do what he could to give them a chance to escape. It felt like luck that allowed him to find Buffy being menaced by a pirate. He punched the pirate hard, a deep sense of satisfaction welling through him from the act. Strange, but nothing to dwell on. He helped Buffy up. "Are you alright?"

She clutched onto him sobbing a little. "I-it was terrifying. The man, he turned into some kind of demon!"

Ah, she had been frightened by the vampire lurking around the house they were in. Possibly a fight had come too close and she had fled without realizing she was leaving the house. "It's alright. Let's head back."

"Not so fast," someone drawled. Abraham turned around to see a vampire leading a small pack of monsters. "That's my prey you're holding."

"She is under my protection."

"Oh! So the dork's got some bite tonight!" The vampire laughed. "Get them." The monsters surged forward. Abraham started to fight. Sadly facing the hoard while trying to protect someone was difficult. He wasn't used to facing such large numbers while protecting someone else. The vampire was powerful as well, reminding him in some ways of Dracula himself, if a lesser version of the master vampire. The blond vampire was taking his time, but kept a sharp focus on the girl he was going after, unlike the lesser creatures which were taking any opportunity they could. The vampire managed to reach Buffy, and Abraham despaired of losing another life-

You came back to yourself with your head spinning at all the changes. Somehow you were in a warehouse, and Buffy was beating up a vampire you had thought had left Sunnydale when Buffy had beat him the first time. He'd been lucky to escape alive. He wouldn't be so lucky this time. You quickly moved to back Buffy up, but somehow despite it all he still managed to escape. The various crying kids in the room might have helped some with that. Grumbling you looked back at Buffy. "Do you know what happened?"

"Terrible luck," Buffy said shortly. She did not seem nearly as pleased with her costume as she had been earlier. You had a fuzzy feeling that was for a good reason.

Giles gave you the entire rundown the next day. A chaos mage had come to Sunnydale and sold enchanted costumes to turn people into them. You hoped you'd made an amazing Van Helsing. Cordelia at least was looking at you more. She might have enjoyed how you looked. If you pushed you could remember some of what had been going on. Buffy was more settled in herself at least, which was good. She'd been a little high strung before the holiday.

Huh. It seems like Xander now has another chance to fulfill his "Get a girlfriend" goal. Cordelia already knows about the supernatural. I'm just wondering how adding her would affect the group dynamics.

[X]Poke into your Halloween memories

This is probably our only chance to cement any benefits from the Van Helsing costume. Even then, I'm not expecting a lot.
