GODSTAR - a Science Fantasy Civilization Quest

Actually if everything works like I think it does then you are almost 100% wrong. After all it's called currency and not capital or worth. In other words it's absolutely not true that just because quote "tokens" that represent worth don't exist that merchants won't accumulate capital. Actually it's opposite, with merchants accumulating more tresures, "gold", land, workers, factories etc. without any method of control. If you want to stop quote "massive capital accumulation" then you need currency or tokens or simply numbers that mesure worth in order to create taxes and make restrictions and other laws that prevent that from occuring. Without currency merchants can grow more wealthy infinitely and there is nothing to stop them. I actuall find it really funny that in order to prevent merchants from rising people are voting against (or in this context not voting) the one thing that would hit merchants the most and allow other factions to also collect money and balance merchants out.

Also economically we absolutely need currency yesterday. Without it any country that has it can spread it's currency inside our borders with us completely unable to stop it, which would allow others to start manipulating our economy. Taken together wtih our current political situation that could allow us to crate the most important currency in the world (planet) right now that would allow us many amazing culture and economical options there was never better time to pick currency and there was never worse one to not pick it. After all the Machine Army of All-Under-Heaven can do the same thing and with us without even our own currency they would dominate us economically to the point we might never recover.

Also also if we don't take currency the Machine Army of All-Under-Heaven almost certainly will (as long as they are not idiots) and spread it to our borders so merchant will get their hands on money no matter what we pick (presumably). That is if people still think currecy will make merchants richer (altough I'm almost positive it really won't)

Then again I might be just wrong and if so please everyone point it out.
Yeah I'm not sure why people think that barter is inherently more egalitarian than money, it's a pain in the ass to have any top down control of it if inequality is a problem.
Currency probably unlock some top down economic reforms for more wealth redistribution and more economic opportunities (like government and venture loans for lower class entrepreneurs).

Honestly, either there is a COMPLEX barter system, or there is prototype forms floating around, because currency is SOOOOO useful in trading goods, as instead of looking for something that has what you need and needs what you have, you can simply find someone to sell what you have to, and then use the acquired standard value items to then buy what you need to someone else.

Our current economic system is not barter but a complex series of debts that is managed by our merchants, I think? Our society is based around families and internally the family provides for their members but externally they bind each other together through a series of debts and obligations. So, it's not a barter system at all. Just a somewhat decentralized system of planning based around debts and obligations.

...Well, wonder how such a system would influence our first currency?

Since paper money only really started thanks to bank notes and other such things being treated like money IRL.

That was largely true until recently, but per the description of the last generation the families are becoming less the center of things...which would tend to leave the merchants as the primary arbiters of who owes who what. That being the case, something that reduces their ability to say who owes what doesn't seem likely to increase their power.
