The Shadow of Old Transgressions (Homeworld/Mass Effect Crossover Quest)

[X] The Irune Financial Sphere

I am very interested as to whether or not everyone's favorite roly-poly methane-breathing bankers were deliberately targeted, or better yet why they were targeted. Is the enemy picking targets at random here, or are they carefully picking and choosing who they hit?

As for any changes or modifications to our hulls... well, I suppose helping Ulysses refine and tweak his engines is definitely a thing we could do? Or, to look at the problem from another direction, maybe reducing the weight of his hull armor may be an option. We did slurp up a LOT of the megalith's hull plating, and it does appear exceptionally tough. An analysis might be prudent; if the material composition is better than what Ulysses currently has (or our entire flotilla for that matter) then another option is building our own version to attach to his hull, especially if it's lighter than what he's currently using but offers comparable protection. A lighter ship = less mass for his engine modules to shove around, which means better performance.

If it turns out to be something that we can recreate and it does offer better (or lighter yet equal) protection across the board, then it could be good for hull upgrades all around.

I feel like I want to change the fleet comp to be more balanced and flexible, but I'm not sure how. I will give it some thought.

@Arcanestomper

Can we upgrade to a Larger Ship Class?

I do support @Geas in their suggestions for Improved Armour that is lighter and stronger.

We also could look into the Eezo to artificially reduce Ship Mass and make Speed better without needing to remove more than outdated stuff.

I think we all need better Multitasking for our Swarm of smaller craft like Acolytes and Cherubs etc.

I also think an automated dedicated Support Ship, may be in need that we can delegate production, resourcing and replacing losses to.

Perhaps two.

As we often split up into smaller Teams, so one each seems wise.

We might also look into a dedicated Repair Ship paired up to each Hero Unit.

Far go much of our Teams personal attention was eaten up by production and repairs.

Personal actions on design and customisation is more reasonable for each of the Bentusi however.

We definitely need to have ability to produce our upscaled version of the Multi Beam Ship though.

It just occurred to me. The Krogan/Kushan are still technically Kushan, and if they're anything like the Canon Kushan, then they are surprisingly inventive engineers. The same can be said about our Kadeshi, obviously.

Dunno if/when we'll be able to trust them enough to begin giving them 'interesting' Bentusi tech, but I wouldn't rule out someone on either ship having some truly excellent insights when it comes to ship designs. Especially if we let them play with some of our newly-acquired element zero.

Not through the usual Bentusi channels. As noted the Bentusi don't give out the real big ships to young people. Which isn't to say you couldn't pester a Bentusi harborship into making you a cruiser or use an alien shipyard to build one yourself.

I will also try to incorporate your other suggestions into the next turn.

Which itself will be coming either today or tomorrow. I'll close the vote this afternoon and then we'll see how quickly I can write the next section.

I look forwards to what you release!

On the answers you gave....

I think we definitely want to try and use our Favour with Irune to build ourselves a Mothership/Mobile Yardship and then use that for Ship Class conversions to bigger Classes.

Perhaps something similar to the Somtaaw command ship might be an option? By that, I mean something that is effectively bare bones but is capable of being modified/expanded via its own built-in capabilities, with or without external support from Aurora and also possibly Laverna.

On the other hand, a modular vessel like that isn't actually in line with Bentusi ship design or logic; it's the kind of ship that the Kadeshi or the Kushan might come up with. It'd also run into the issue of just how to adequately defend a ship of that size against the attackers that we've been facing. I doubt our current defensive field generators would be sufficient, though quantity has a certain quality of its own. However, the recent engagement has definitively emphasized that capital ship-class weaponry are more than our fields can handle. It's another point in favor of replicating the megalith's hull to use as armor plating though - it stood up impressively well, certainly much better than our defensive fields or Bentusi radial binding design.

I suppose what we'll be able to do with the shipyard depends on just how grateful the Irune merchants are and how much time they'll grant us access to it.

Codex: The Irune Financial Sphere

The Irune Financial Sphere

Originating from the high gravity world of Irune the Vol clan spread out to the surrounding systems starting approximately five thousand years ago. Although their ammonia based atmosphere made them ill suited to living with other species this proved a boon as they had little need to compete for colonizable planets and instead developed a largely peaceful trading culture.

The Irune were one of the species that stayed out of the revolution that swept the Galactic Council into power. Instead they stayed on the sidelines and took the opportunity to expand their own trade networks when the Bentusi began withdrawing from galactic society. However this changed three thousand years ago when the Hiigaran Empire rose to power and terrorized the galaxy.

The Vol clan was not involved in the fighting themselves, however they saw how a single war was able to destroy dozens of worlds with little to now warning. After much internal discussion between factions promoting the growth of their own military and those seeking outside alliance the Vol-clan evenutally fell on the side of the alliance seekers and sought client status with the newly ascendant Taiidan Empire. Such a prosperous subject was glady welcomed and the Irune Financial sphere became a protectorate of the Empire.

Even when the Empire transitioned into a Republic they remained protectorates and in all the ages since then their status has not changed. A fact which is beginning to grate and which become a source of continuous debate on Irune itself.

[ ] Gravity Pulse Emitters (High Energy): ([ ] [ ])
Using data from the Megalith you have been able to develop a singularity weapon that can be deployed on the battlefield to trap and disrupt enemy vessels. It scales more or less with their engine power. Fighters and corvettes will be crippled. Frigates and Destroyers will be massively slowed. Cruisers and up will simply be somewhat slower. It's a great weapon, but you haven't actually been able to test it. It requires certain exotic materials you only have theoretical knowledge of. In fact the first time you actually saw them used was in the Megalith, and you didn't exactly stop to mine it. So you'd have to find a supply.

[ ] Monomolecular Armor (Metallurgy): ([X] [X] [ ] [ ] [ ] [ ])
You were very impressed by the monomolecular armor on the Megalith. From your analysis you believe you will need to use some of the exotic matter to squeeze your normal materials into the requisite close bonds and then stabilize them that way. It will be a challenging project covering areas that Bentusi have not looked into before. Which makes it a very exciting avenue of research.

[ ] Design Drone Core (Sociology): ([ ] [ ])
You have a number of potential designs that the Bentusi have never felt the need to build drone cores for. You can perform the design and analysis of a virtual intelligence capable of piloting these ships.
-[ ] Pick a non Drone Design

[ ] Optimize Schematic (Engineering): ([ ] [ ])
You have a number of designs on file that are either fron Non Bentusi races or were designed from scratch and have flaws to put it mildly. Take some time to go over them and fix mistakes and redundancies as well as incorporate Bentusi technology if necessary.
-[ ] Pick a jury rigged or non Bentusi Design

[ ] Repair Drone (Engineering): ([ ] [ ])
It would be a good idea to produce a drone that could autonomously repair your vessels. Unfortunately there is a lower limit on the size you can cram the necessary modules in, but you ought to be able to develop a drone frigate that could do the job.

[ ] Improve Themselves (Special): ([ ])
Each member of the flotilla has things they would like to improve about their bodies. Rather than approach this in an ad hoc manner let them make their designs and then run the schematics past the whole group for discussion and revision of any possible design flaws.

[ ] Design a Collier Ship (Logistics): ([ ] [ ] [ ])
The flotilla has a lot of ships using missiles now. And those missiles are becoming ever more complex. It would be a good idea to build a fast armored ship that can safely transfer large quantities of missiles between ships without risking catastrophic damage.

[ ] Subspace Drive (Engineering): ([ ] [ ])
You found your own bit of loot from a Progenitor station. What you dub the Subspace drive allows ships to slip away into a slightly different allowing them to lurk unnoticed either to launch an ambush or to give them time to repair or get away from the enemy. It should be reasonably simple to install it onto a ship, though you lack the ability to make additional copies.

[ ] Analyze T-Mat Salvage (Special) ([ ] [ ] [ ])
You salvaged a good bit of debris off the T-Mat starfish after you destroyed it. You'll have to take a closer look to sort through it and decide what it might be useful for, but you expect you'll be able to get some from of upgrade for your ion turrets. Perhaps your engines as well given how fast it was moving.

[ ] Analyze Wraith Data Core (Special) ([ ] [ ] [ ])
You've been accumulating a package of data on the Wraiths starting with the data you pulled from the megalith and added to in every encounter. Obviously you know whats in it since you put it together. But a lot of the information that you pulled out of the megalith and wraith flagship you only skimmed over. It would be a good idea to examine them more closely.

[ ] Analyze Crimson Organic Matter (Special) ([ ] [ ] [ ])
The ability of the crimson organic mass you've been finding in the wraiths to take over systems both mechanical and organic is extremely concerning. Developing a defense is a fairly high priority and if possible you would even like to figure out a way to rescue people who have been drawn into the mass. Though you fear that may be impossible.

[ ] Analyze Subversion Beam (Special) ([X] [X] [X])
The wraith flagship's ability to convert huge masses of ships to its side was one of the most deadly parts of the siege of Irune. You have to assume that the Wraiths will rebuild that weapon and try again. So you need to analyze the remnants you salvage to try and find a countermeasure.
-Kadeshi
-Keepers

[ ] Support Drone (Logistics): ([X] [X])
Constantly needing to juggle drone production is a hassle. It would be a good idea to design a new drone ship that would be able to produce smaller drone strikecraft and handle resource harvesting needs.

[ ] Mass Effector Cores (High Energy): ([X] [X])
A preliminary study of the exotic matter you harvested from the Megalith has shown that it can actually reverse the effects of gravity on space time. In practical effect this means you can design a core that will offset the weight of your ships making them lighter and thus more nimble.

[ ] Fleet Control Hub (Sociology): ([X] [X])
In the last few engagements you have run into the limits of how many drones a single Bentusi can adequately control. It is time to design a sub mind that can intelligently coordinate a wing of drones without constant input from the Bentusi.

[ ] Dervish Multibeam Corvettes (Engineering): ([X] [X])
You already designed this ship for yourself, but now with Laverna and Aurora's help you have adapted it to be piloted by a drone core rather than an Unbound. This has the same optimization problems as the Fusion Bombers, but since you had the design on hand you were able to spend a bit more time on the drone AI. In addition the larger body meant you could add more armor to make up for inferior piloting. They would be significantly more expensive than either the acolytes or cherubs.

[ ] Design a Mobile Defensive Generator (High Energy): ([ ] [ ] [ ])
Build a drone ship with sufficient defensive fields such that it can protect the rest of your flotilla without you personally have to get involved.

[ ] Design a Bombardment Ship (Logistics) : ([X] [ ] [ ])
If the Wraith can build bombardment ships so can you. And you'll do it better. Most of the effort will go into the missiles. With Bentusi drives and armor they'll be incredibly tough and difficult to destroy. And with a quantum explosive charge in each one failing to do so will hurt the wraiths hard. For the launcher you'll just use a modified Shepherd frigate. After all they're already designed to build and launch fighters and the missiles will be relatively similar. You'll probably need to revisit the design once you've seen how the Wraiths respond however.

[ ] Missile Pods (Logistics): ([ ] [ ])
Most weapons require power from the carrying ship, but missiles are self contained. You could outfit missile launchers to your entire flotilla. The downside is that only Aurora and Laverna could supply themselves. The rest of you would need to return to Aurora to reload. That might be possible to mitigate with resupply drones, but you'd need to put more work into it. Also frankly missiles are fairly lackluster compared to ion cannons. You could also use fusion torpedoes or mines, but they have their own limitations and the same supply issues as the missiles.

[ ] Hack the Bentusi Archives for a Cruiser schematic(Special): ([X] [ ] [ ])
The problem here is that you've gone way out of the parameters of your original mission. Most Bentusi in your position would be expected to head back to the shielded nebulae and report to the elders not take it on themselves to rally the flicker races. And they definitely wouldn't be given access to the ancient Bentusi military cruisers. You're going to have to hack into your restricted archives and take whatever you can find.

[ ] Design Drone Core (Sociology): ([ ] [ ])
You have a number of potential designs that the Bentusi have never felt the need to build drone cores for. You can perform the design and analysis of a virtual intelligence capable of piloting these ships.
-[ ] Gatekeeper Destroyer [X] [X]

[ ] Passenger Ark (Engineering): ([X] [X] [ ] [ ])
Ever since you have brought aliens into your flotilla the five of you have been bouncing back and forth ideas for providing them a better way to exercise and enjoy recreational activities. These have solidified into a mothership class ship fitted with parks, hangars, a Bentusi class jump drive, and sufficient space for thousands of crew. Right now it's just a thought exercise, but you could change that.

[ ] Involve your Flicker Friends (???): ([X] [X])
Ask the Kadeshi and Kushan what sort of engineering tricks they can bring to bear on the problems that the flotilla faces. Bentusi might have the best technology, but you aren't blind to the fact that approaching an idea from a different angle might come up with some innovative solutions.

[ ] Refine Siege Cannon (High Energy): ([X] [X] [ ] [ ])
Ulysses pulled this massive cannon off an unidentified hulk he found in the Kiln cluster. It shoots a massive fusion charge that can be detonated at will. It loses strength as it travels, but even at moderate rangers packs enough of a punch to devastate fleets. It takes immense amounts of energy however. The cannon itself is half as long as Ulysses and was clearly designed for a much bigger ship. It needs some work to integrate it into Ulysses system without overloading him.

[ ] Optimize Schematic (Engineering): ([X] [X])
You have a number of designs on file that are either fron Non Bentusi races or were designed from scratch and have flaws to put it mildly. Take some time to go over them and fix mistakes and redundancies as well as incorporate Bentusi technology if necessary.

This is excellent. So many options though, whew! Good thing it's not a vote yet, as this'll give everyone playing time to properly digest all of these options (myself included) and think of ways to maximize their potential. For example, off the top of my head, I could see the missile pods synergizing very well with the Support Drones. Even though Support Drones are clearly to maximize the efficiency of our strike craft, it may be possible to extend their functionality to also function as ammunition barges, under the assumption that they're designed with a built-in resource nexus to facilitate building/repairing drone strike craft.

The passenger ark... it reads like it could be either a much larger hull for Aurora replacing her Weaver Carrier, or something intended to be predominantly crewed entirely by our Kushan and Kadeshi comrades, depending on how the design is refined and how much trust we choose to extend. And the drone core reads like a fine way to make use of the ship classes that would normally have a Bentusi in the driver's seat.

As you jump towards Irune the flotilla has become rather lively. Bentusi can think and discuss very quickly, but they also expect to live a very long time. So conversations tend to be brief high volume exchanges followed by long intervals of silence as each Bentusi ponders their own thoughts. The Flicker races aren't like that. They talk comparatively slowly, but they never stop. And there are more than forty of them in the flotilla now. In their own ways both the Kadesh and Kushan are from isolated cultures and they seek to broaden their understanding of the wider galaxy.

The Kadeshi talk about ships and drives. They want to know about all the races in the galaxy and what they fly. They ask about good mining spots and the wreckage of the progenitors. The Kushan also want to know about others, but their focus is war. They want to know more about the pirates, both the ones you have been fighting and other lesser bands. They want to know what the navies of the galaxy consider to be a good warship. Oddly both of them talk about philosophy. They talk about the quiet spaces and contemplate their minuscule nature compared to the void.

Iuno is in her element, but Ulysses and Laverna spend quite a lot of time chatting with the Kushan and Kadeshi respectively. Ulysses hosts several virtual war games, and Laverna is collaborating on some kind of advanced mothership design.

That leaves you and Aurora. You participate in the discussions of course, but the mantle of leadership has settled on you. And Aurora is handling the entire flotilla's logistics needs. So you both have much to discuss. In particular you talk about what the flotilla has shown to be lacking and what it might need in the future.

In the end you both collate your thoughts and organize a conference with the others. From now on everyone will contribute a portion of their time towards improving the flotilla. There is no dissent. Everyone knows that things have become very dangerous and are eager to do their part.

You can assign each Bentusi to one project. Each Bentusi will contribute one block to the project. Unless it matches their specialty, in which case they will contribute two blocks.

Finally you arrive in the Aru system. As the golden gates close behind you all of you increase your sensor resolution to maximize as you scan the system. This isn't because you're expecting trouble, but rather because this is the first time in more than a century that any of you have actually been near an inhabited planet.

The concept is fascinating. And this isn't just a regular planet, but one of the densest planets in known space. How can the Vol Clan live in such a gravity well? Even the other races of the galaxy don't deal with such a massive drag on their frames. But the Vol don't just survive in the harsh environment, they thrive.

Your sensors spot thousands of civilian freighters crisscrossing the systems. Despite being the home system of a "minor" race it easily matches the traffic of the Grand Conclave, perhaps even exceeds it. The Irune Financial Sphere really lives up to their name as the most prolific traders in the galaxy.

Irune itself is girded with a massive ring with spokes stretching down to the planet. It is simultaneously their answer to the problem of their own gravity and one of the largest structures in known space. It even compares favorably with Progenitor ruins. And it is positively packed with ships arriving, docking, and leaving. Mostly civilian ships, but you see a large contingent of Taiidan warships parked along the ring along with another group in polar orbit. Apparently they take the security of their protectorate seriously.

Even with your diplomatic credentials it takes a few days to make your way through the queue and dock in one of the cavernous hangars. Once there you consider your situation. You don't really know much about the Irune. What would be the best way to contact their leaders? You also have some rewards to spend.

You will attempt to do all of the below options, but which one will you prioritize?

[ ] Contact the Sphere's Leaders
You know they are led by some kind of Assembly of Clans, but you have no real sway here. Your best bet will be contacting the merchant consortium that owned the freighters you saved. They'll be glad to help you, and they'll know the local political system better than you do.

[ ] Get up to date on Galactic News
You've been running back and forth through some very isolated systems. Time to check up on the galactic rumors and news. For one thing you're very interested in finding out if the Irune have been suffering more raids from the Ebony Pirates. The initial attack seemed straightforward at the time, but everything you've seen since then points towards the Ebony Pirates not actually being pirates. They seem to have some agenda besides just raiding commerce.

[ ] Go Shopping
You're currently in one of the largest shipyards in the galaxy. You have your own resources, an account with the Bank of Cherk Sab, and a slew of improvements you want to make to the Flotilla. Time to interlink with the engineering systems here and do a lot of retrofitting.

This is excellent. So many options though, whew! Good thing it's not a vote yet, as this'll give everyone playing time to properly digest all of these options (myself included) and think of ways to maximize their potential.

Well voting is open now. But I'll give it a few days for people to think things over. Also bear in mind that this isn't just a one time thing. The research will remain for the rest of the Quest and you'll have more opportunities to work on things.

Also if anyone has more ideas for the research projects let me know, and I'll be happy to add them.

So tentatively, I'm thinking the following for research projects:

[X] Aurora (Logistics)
-[X] Support Drone
[X] Laverna (High Energy)
-[X] Mass Effector Cores
[X] Iuno (Sociology)
-[X] Fleet Control Hub
[X] Ulysses (Metallurgy)
-[X] Monomolecular Armor
[X] Valerius (Engineering)
-[X] Dervish Multibeam Corvettes

Basically, assign everyone to projects fitting their specialty - everything but Monomolecular Armor should be finished fairly quickly, as they're 2 block projects. More efficient support drones, a better control hub, remote controlled corvettes and mass effector cores should have good synergistic effects, and worst case, we'll have armor finished in two more opportunities, if not at the next available one.

As for the action to prioritize, I'm inclined to go for

[X] Contact the Sphere's Leaders

A bit less optimized action economy than the above plan, but eventually this is going to escalate into a larger conflict. Kushan and Kadeshi techbase will likely be more scalable than what we're currently using, and getting them in on our R&D pipeline now might streamline research efforts elsewhere. (if not now, I'd definitely want to do so if we get the keepers on board)
As for who, sociology spec seems like the best bet for outreach, and there's no low hanging fruit in metallurgy.

For the passenger ark, it'd be the closest thing we have to a proper mothership, and be another option for supporting a larger fleet.

Shopping is nice, allies are nicer.

Okay, thought about it, and this is how I'm gonna vote; improving the efficiency of how our flotilla functions for the most part, while beginning to understand how to integrate element zero into our tech base. Let's be honest here, eezo makes for some seriously impressive mobility improvements. As much as I'd like to have Ulysses get started on cracking that sweet sweet megalith hull plating, I feel like encouraging him to build up a rapport with our little buddies may prove magical. Hence, my vote for the Passenger Ark.

This could get us more flicker friends in our flotilla and that's definitely not a bad thing. As a reminder, in Mass Effect 3 the Irunese built what is arguably the sexiest (and scariest) dreadnought that we ever hear about in the entire franchise - the Kwunu - which was armed from main gun to broadsides entirely with Reaper-derived magnetic-hydrodynamic weaponry. In theory, it has a punch that only the Destiny Ascension surpasses (as that super-capital ship is specifically stated to be carrying the firepower of an entire fleet). It certainly made a Turian general damn near soil himself at the thought of what it could do in combat after touring the ship.

Granted, a part of what made the Kwunu so scary is that the Irunese could afford to throw absurd amounts of credits and resources into designing and building such a heavily-armed monster more than any other race. However, I feel that it should be noted that while they're considered unsuited for ground combat unless they're wearing power armor (not that that makes much sense - despite their small size, they come from a heavy-gravity world, which almost certainly means that you don't want to get in a hand-squeezing contest with one) they have a stated preference for air and navy forces, and those 'heavy-bomber frigates' sound delightfully nasty. I don't know if we'll manage to score any new members for our flotilla once we reach Irune, but I wouldn't vote against an equivalent vessel if it reads like it matches up well in comparison to the kinds of ships that I learned about in ME3.

I did not think this through when I formatted the voting options. The vote tally is no help this time.

Welp anyway, I think I'll close the vote tomorrow morning and post the next update some time later in the day.

Another few R&D ideas

1. A Drone Ship that is a Mobile Shield Generator to Defend the Ships of our Flotilla.

We don't have time to whack a Shield in all of our existing Fleet and sometimes we may need to protect others or objects or places.

2. Gravitic Lensing. Gravity Tech to function as a Lasing Medium for Gravitic Lasers.

Most Lasers are limited by their Lenses, hence material science plays a big part in terms of durability, heat resistance etc. Gravitic Lensing does away with that entirely. Likely only practical on larger ships, but a big potential game changer.

A mobile shield generator is a good idea, but of all the homeworld races only the Vaygr use lasers. So if you want lasers you're going to have to go talk with them.

As I expected the vote tally got confused and I had to count the votes manually. There were some significant splitting for Valerius, Ulysses, and Iuno. All of those votes ended up 4-2, but they did have clear winners. Aurora and Laverna were both unanimous. So here is the final winning plan.
