@Goldfish, what do you think of adding to your fight plan additional instructions for Ooloa to use her Minor Change Shape to help her escape the hold the thief has on her? E.g. by making her arms thicker and her body stockier? And also explicitly tell her that as soon as she is free, she should get away from the thief and the fighting and get to Inge if she requires healing?

There is a chance her Minor Change Shape can help, as we've seen her explicitly use it to make herself larger,

and at least for partial transformations she can do it quickly:

So, overall, changing

to something like this:

-[] At Roland's urging, Swift Pebble asks the Changeling hostage to lift her feet from the floor and to go limp when he attacks, so that she becomes dead weight and more difficult for the thief to hold onto, use her Minor Change Shape to help her escape the hold she is in, e.g. by thickening her arms and making herself stockier, and, as soon as she is free, get away from the thief and the fighting and get to Inge if she requires healing. Roland switches to Indomitable Presence.

Also, Wanderer was in range from the start and Tom should be in range now. Perhaps add to the plan that they also should converge on the thief to help prevent his escape, and/or try to grapple (and pin) / disarm / trip him? Or, I'm not sure, Tom could attempt a Dirty Trick to entangle the thief? Wanderer also could rage until the thief is properly restrained or dead.

Plus, for the other two spearmen who arrived with Tom, cut off any possible escape routes?
Changing shape for Changelings is a Full-Round Action, meaning that in this instance it's not really fast enough to be used as you are hoping for. It might even be more dangerous for her to attempt it, as the thief might get spooked if she starts slowly shapeshifting in his grasp and attack her out of reflex.

I'll add Tom, Wanderer, and the others to my plan.

Yeah, I checked it's full-roundness, I meant that she should do it as soon as she lifts her feet off the floor and goes limp and Roland goes for the thief, when the thief would be alarmed regardless. Though if you're sure it's probably would be less beneficial than harmful, yeah, it's better without it. Maybe just the arm thickening then, again, when the thief is already alarmed?

Also, just in case, explicitly tell her, as soon as she is free, to get away from the thief and the fighting and get to Inge if she requires healing? By adding

Roland switches to Indomitable Presence.
?

Edit: I'm wary without this explicit instruction she might not use benefits of the Diehard granted by Indomitable Presence and would go unconscious instead of getting away and to healing if she'll go below 0 HP.

Added instructions for her to get to Inge if injured.

I don't think asking her to shapeshift would be helpful, both because it would be slow and a distraction for her, but also because she's Small-sized and can't actually change that, even if there is a little wiggle room. The degree to which she can change just wouldn't be relevant, IMO.

But I thought that it was only one century:

Although there is nothing about how many Romans it were, I checked.
If there's one thing Romans are good at, it's raising entire Legions to their own standards in record time.

Really, somewhere between their training style and a good system for using veterans they had a knack for calling up more and more legions in emergencies without great reductions of quality.
Usually if you loose an army trained to high standards you take years to replace them, Rome has often enough given orders to raise 3-6 more Legions right now and had them ready a few months later.

@DragonParadox, can you say anything on following two questions on Ooloa's Minor Change Shape in regards to her current situation?

1. Can it be measurably useful for her to help her get out of the hold the thief has on her, e.g. by thickening her arms and/or making herself stockier? At least on the order of magnitude of other possible general physical actions, like her lifting her feet and going limp.

Or would you rule that because it doesn't have relevant mechanical effects, it won't be useful?

It looks like, as you've shown, she used it to help herself in that way,
she is now a dark haired and dark eyed boy as she gets off her perch. Being a little bigger seems quite helpful getting off that perch.
and that while it doesn't change Changeling's size category, it still has quite a range of size, as you've said one of the boys made himself appear as a 5 year old while being at least 7 years old,
Not quite, the thing is he had been taking shapes that look younger than he really is because he found that made him less likely to be hurt.
and there's noticeable difference in size between 5 year olds and 7 year olds.

2. Full Minor Change Shape is a full round action and therefore should be quite distracting and takes quite a bit of time, but is the same true for smaller partial transformations of the current form, like making arms thicker?

Or would the degree of transformation not matter, because it's not taken into account in mechanics of Minor Change Shape?

  1. I would say what it would give her what is basically a +2 to escape artist rolls. That is not nothing, but she does not have the skill so she would be rolling d20+DEX+2 to get out of the hold
  2. She cannot partially transform, but the simple fact that she shape-changes at all will be surprising enough for her to get that +2

Rome has often enough given orders to raise 3-6 more Legions right now and had them ready a few months later.

In fairness, Rome could do so because they, with their long lasting professional military well integrated into their society, had an enormous amount of retired veterans to call upon to form the backbone of a fresh army, a strong tradition of civil service and martial courage, and other things that encourage young men to think of war as an excellent career choice, and the wealth and infrastructure to churn out the necessary supplements to inherited war gear (of which there is a lot floating around, because, again, Romans are really into war and have a veteran culture drawn from a professional army that draws on Roman community values), absolutely none of which would exist in this world.

It's not really Roman training, though they were good at that too, and more Rome as an entire society in its heyday was enormously jingoistic and had a long history of glorious war, and so could dig up the means to fight one obscenely quickly.

Edit: It also helps that as a culture, they were enormously opposed to doing anything so banal and desperate as admit they *lost* a war. See: Hannibal and that generally extremely gory incident.

Cool, added that to my plan.

Arc 15 Post 16: Dead Man's Gambit
Dead Man's Gambit

Nineteenth Day of Olweje-eza (Olweje Ascendant), 1349 A. L. (After Landfall)

"These Ten Thousand, who were they?" you ask gripped by sudden suspicion. "Were they man who fought with weapons alike each to the other? Did they call themselves Romans... er... Latinus? Are you talking about the fateless who..."

"Enough games!" The thief pulls the child close and in a flash the sword strikes towards her neck just as he raises her feet off the ground and throws all her weight into his wrist as you had asked her to. Alas he seemed to have been waiting for something of the sort. Even as her flesh begins to shift it is severed and with a cry of agony she is hurled to the ground, dead or dying even as from the thief's other hand falls a something white and polished that explodes with a sound like thunder.

The Marcella's tendrils recoil from the sound letting him free to dive forward, bloodied sword still in hand he dives under your reach, his armorlick like eel's skin under the glancing hit of the blade. Ige again rushes to offer what healing she can and even Esha'c spell of terror has no power over the butcher's heart.

As you turn, sword bright in he dark you see him not and curse, thinking that he had vanished, until Zaia calls a warming: "He's running to the steps under a glamor!"

With a toss of one of his concoctions the hungry flames race up his legs and there at last you see him, illuminated by his torment. shouting a challenge, you know not which you charge after him and for the first time in your life feel wholly at peace with stabbing a man in the back... or at least what you think is the back among the flames, but wounded and burning he manages to make it to the deck, scrambling up the steps.

Over your head a crossbow bolt flies, but it finds no purchase, but Wanderer certainly does as he charges into the man as a mountain of solid muscles and armor, fearsome club in hand. You hear the bone braking, but slippery as a snake the foe manages to scramble up the steps up to the deck... The deck filled with sailors, some of who have readied their bows.

An arrow springs forth, then another. You hear Tom shout a charge and sink his spear into the intruder's leg just above the knew, but it is still not enough. You and Wanderer are not, even as the flames die down the two of you now know where the son of a bitch is, at least near enough to swing and so swing you do. It's not worth trying to cut off his head and so you hack into the body again and again and again.

"Go! Save them!" you hear with gargling breath as the man falls, his spell faded and from his mouth springs the most unlikely of creatures, a grey and orange feathered bird, with a tiny bag in its claws, perhaps bearing a message back to his confederates.

It vanishes almost instantly in the swirling grey dust.

***

Later, once you had been assured that both Ooloa and Runs in Rain are restored in full Esha confirms that the bird likely had carried off the bones. She calls if a pouch of safe-keeping, though it is rare indeed, most often found in the keeping of priests of Nikure who use them to pass tribute to the Goddess though lands that do no favor her.

It seems you had lost one of your treasures to another thief and this time there would be no easy recovery of them, though perhaps someone will be able to recognize the dead fanatic by his markings or the accountants he bears....

"The sword is Ibanoran by forging," Mog claims, literally pocking a small blue head into the meeting. "Look here the way the guard is curved back to fit the hand and even lock in battle."

"Many bear blades of that city," you reply, dubious that you can identify a man by a fine blade, a bad one maybe if he is poor and can only afford the work of those smiths nearest to hand, but a fine blade will cross half the world and be passed though many hands.

Esha on the other hand was looking down at the corpse's feet, the sandals like his legs had been badly burned, but something was gleaming there. She plucks up a bronze bead. "No one but an Ibanoran and a wealthy one at that would wear bronze on his feet I would wager."

"I figured it out first," Mog argues his tone threatening a quarrel, but you pay him no mind.

"Do you think we should pay a visit to the city?" Antonio asks softly. "There is still a war between them and Orinilu which might see us pestered by the local authorities, but flattery and silver both will be a balm to that rash and we may find who has robbed us and mayhap why."

"If it was a foreigner they must have paid a princely sum indeed to the Anwa raiders to sail, more than the bone is worth," Zaia musses.

"More than it's worth on the open market, I think that it is fair to say the thief had something in mind for that."

What do you do?

[] Detour to Ibanora

[] Stay the course

OOC: You guys did not have a lot of luck this update, from initiative to damage rolls to the Marcella being stunned into letting go. Still the one place you were lucky was the kid making her fort save not to die so there is that, you lost stuff, not people.

At least one of the fuckers is dead. I just wish we had saved the bones and that Bag of Holding. Hell, I would have gladly weighted the bones with anyone anchors and thrown them overboard just to keep the bag they were in.

Did we get any other loot from the dead thief, @DragonParadox? It sounds like his armor was enchanted, at least, and he had to be carrying some other magical gear to pull off what he did. Just can't tell how much of it was from single-use items.

No point in going to Ibanora right now, IMO. That just delays us needlessly while potentially putting ourselves in the easy crosshairs of the latest enemies to have added themselves to my list.

  1. The armor is +1 Eeel-hide
  2. Sword's masterwork, but not magical
  3. He also had two healing potions on him

There is no way that little bird reaches land before dying from exhaustion in the middle of the sandstorm.

Nice! I know magical armor can normally resize itself to fit different wearers, but would a suit of magical studded leather armor for a Medium-sized Human be able to adjust itself for a Tiny-sized Otter-kin? It would be a great armor for Swift Pebble.

Magic is definitely involved there. It's probably some variant of a Wondrous Figurine or someone's Familiar, and it only needs to reach the enemy ship, which isn't that far away.

I would say magical armor can go up to one size up or down so as to avoid being silly so you would probably be best served giving it to Antonio.

I would fight the exhausted pirates for a bag of holding, @Goldfish
If it was just pirates, I would consider it, but there are more than pirates on at least one of those ships, and I don't want to gamble on what exactly they have available. The thief was extremely well equipped, including having only the second or third suit of magical armor we've ever seen and several single-use but expensive magical items.

Now that we know they exist, we can be on the lookout for an opportunity to purchase our own Bag of Holding.

I think that this guy was the one to wrote the message probably, but anyway.

We can get one later.

@DragonParadox, some questions.

1. The girl had to roll to not die because Roland had no time to switch to Indomitable Presence to get her benefits of Diehard?

2. Dragon's skull was together with all the other bones?

3. Two updates ago Tom was 1d3 rounds from being in range,
1d3 turns Tom and two of the other spearmen will make it into range
in the previous update we had a dialog with about 10 phrases, some of them quite lengthy, which obviously took more than 18 seconds, and I expected Tom to be in range at the end of the previous update. Does it not work like that?
