[X] Goldfish

It's a pity that we hale not mass version of Touch of the Sea. It would be handy.

Also, @Goldfish , we have that Zentragt horn. Maybe we should ready it?
If we had more time and a better idea of how to use the Zentragt in this situation I would have considered it, but there is only so much space on Marcella's deck and it's already crowded. Adding another Large-sized creature to that mix doesn't seem like it would be too helpful and could even be detrimental.

If this weren't a blessing of the wargod I'd use the Zentrag as search-and-rescue in the water, it is an excellent swimmer.

But given who stands behind the transformation I wouldn't trust the "blessed" warrior to stick to rescuing people while there is fighting nearby.

I'm also wary of using it against an enemy who doesn't have metal weapons or armor to consume before the time limit expires. Olweje seems like enough of a dick that he would leave the transformed person in that state permanently using that as a loophole.

Ok, let's get in this fight and see how it goes

  • [X] Fight the elementals
-[X] Roland will determine targeting priority for the airborne Air Elementals. Whichever one he shoots at within range, everyone else with a bow or crossbow among Marcella's crew will do the same.
--[X] Roland will use his Encouraging Roar maneuver as a Swift Action (+2 Morale bonus to attack and damage rolls for himself and all allies within 30 feet for 1 round), then target the nearest Elemental he can see. He will then take a Full-Round Action to regain use of his Encouraging Roar maneuver. During that round when he is re-centering himself, our ranged attackers will continue firing upon the originally targeted Elemental unless it is slain. On the following round, Roland will use Encouraging Roar, again targeting the same Elemental unless it has been destroyed, which will prompt him to select another nearby target, repeating this tactic as time and the situation permits.
--[X] After the first ranged salvo, while Roland is re-centering himself to prepare to use Encouraging Roar again, Antonio will take the opportunity to form a Mindlink with Marcella if he hasn't already.
--[X] Zaia will first drink his Mutagen (+2 Natural Armor, +4 CON, -2 CHA) and a Shield extract. If he has time, he'll then drink his Bomber's Eye and Targeted Bomb Admixture extracts before attempting to hit any Elementals with his bombs, always being careful not to throw them where Marcella or her crew could be injured by them.
--[X] Inge will cast Mage Armor on herself then on Zaia. After that, she'll focus on using her Guidance cantrip and Fortune Hex on the ranged contingent to aid them where possible. She'll only use her Snowball spells to defend herself and her allies if they come under direct attack by the Elementals. The first time she needs to use her Snowball, she'll first use her Guiding Spirit power as a Swift Action to improve her chances of hitting her target.
--[X] Esha will use her Twilight Barrier as a Swift Action, then cast Mage Armor on herself. She'll then use her staff to cast Shield on herself. After preparing, Esha will follow Roland's lead, firing her staff's 8th level Magic Missiles (4d4+4 Force damage) each time the targeted Elemental is within range (180 feet). If the battle goes on so long that her staff can no longer fire Magic Missiles (after 4 separate castings), she will fall back on using her Ray of Frost cantrip for attack purposes, reserving her Blindness spells for emergencies.
--[X] Tom, Wanderer, and the rest of our men will make ready to defend the ranged attackers and repel Elementals who attack the Marcella. Our net-wielders will forego using their nets in this instance, instead using their short swords. Any sailors we've rescued from the sea who are able and willing to fight will be under Tom's command for this purpose.
--[X] Silver will position himself nearby where he can defend Roland and our mages should they come under attack by Elementals, but he'll otherwise try to stay nearby rather than moving about the deck to attack Elementals that come upon it to attack the crew. His size and the potential chaos on deck during the attack could make things worse.
--[X] Ripper will stay near Inge, protecting her if she is in danger.
--[X] Swift Pebble and her fellow Otter-kin will stay out of the way while facilitating communication between everyone aboard. Their small stature makes them especially vulnerable to the Air Elementals and their presence on deck would be more of a distraction for the defenders than a hindrance for the enemy.
--[X] Marcella will prioritize helping her crew over random Anwari sailors, and if she is able she will do what she can to fend off any Elementals who approach too closely.

Arc 14 interlude 1: Into the Frey
Into the Fray

Twenty Fourth Day of Elnu-Hamba (Elnu Descendent), 1349 A. L. (After Landfall)

Nico felt the shiver running though Branch Breaker's body against his shoulder, and he felt his fear almost as close as his own. Looking up at the sky all he could see was chaos and madness, amid the sound of the dying and the crack of wood and the snapping of lines all he could think of was a scene of the End of Days he had seen in a church in Rouen when he was a boy. Though he had one hand on the bow and an arrow in the other he was as far from thinking of battle as a mouse with a eagle in the sky.

"Shoot!" Sir Roland shouted and all at once the fear seemed to flee from his body. He could feel it in the soles of his feet, like a groaning roaring hum, he could see it all about as sorcery flashed and danced around the pale lady and the around Inge, wards and spells of protection he thought they were... but it was arrows that found their mark first, bronze tips and bright white feathers.

His was one of the ones that found their mark among the whirling mass of the spirits, sparking off something the eye shied away from seeing. And then the things descended on the ships like wolves on a prize bull.

***

Zaia of Alexandria had never liked horses, much preferring mules or donkeys for their gentler gait and less pretentious palates, but he had never expected to have a talking horse tossed onto him by the weight of a four whirling elementals moving with the fury of a hurricane. The bottle he had been readying flew from his hand and in an instant flashed to hungry red flames on the deck, fanned by the very winds that had stated it...

Don't play with fire little wizard, the singsong words, as though called out by a cruel child, followed him down into unconsciousness.

***

Seeing the healer near crushed under the weight of the horse that had been trying to guard him made Esha freeze with fear... and then the flush of unaccustomed anger. She had been in battle before and she had not always been alone, but as the ship swayed and twisted under the strength of the foe the sorceress felt for the first time that murderous rage that she had feared to find in her heart. She wanted to kill them, to tear the life out of them and make it her own. The world seemed slow all around her, seen though the warped lens of her wards, her staff was bolted into the ground and bolts of fire flashed out of it.

"Die screaming!" Esha cursed nd knew not in what tongue it was.

***

Tom had not thought he would miss fighting the damn dragon, as awful as that was a dragon was still a thing of flesh and blood that you could sink a spear into, this was bloody wind and hate and howling madness, this was seeing the lads he had fought with and bedded down beside flying over the gunwale, ropes going taunt, their own or the ship as he tried to fight something fast as as galloping horse and about as hard to fight with a spear. He had never wished he was a damn archer more in his life, but arrows were few and the enemy were many... and they were coming for them.

When one of the crossbows tipped overboard he hardly noticed... until that is he saw the captain go down with it. Tom flung himself across the deck, only half noticing that Sir Roland was trying to distangle man and horse as the fire roared beside them. But when he reached the edge it was to find the captain not fallen but tangled up in a fishing net of the sort the crew would sometimes use... a net that had not been there.

Uncanny bloody ship, the thought was more fond than troubled

***

Water, water I need water, as prayers went it wasn't the most fair-said, but it was from the heart just as from the midst of battle. As Inge asked so it was... and not a moment too soon as she had to dive under a beam that the spirit had tossed over her head. "Stop, stop! Why are you doing this?" she found herself shouting even as a shard of ice spun from her hand to strike the figure where its heart might have been on a man.

Then an arrow went though its head from behind and another and another.

Swiftly as it had come the spirits took flight... leaving behind a deck strewn with the wounded and the flotsam of battle... but not death, the girl could not feel Her close that way.

The fire was put out, the wounded healed, but when al that could be set aright was there came one last frightening realization, no one could find Ohun, no high and not low.

What does the fleet do?

[] Sail on as fast as the wind can take them, to meet an actual storm in this state might be the death of all of you

[] Split up with the most damaged ships going ahead

OOC: I'm sorry this took so long. I was kind of tired of battles where you guys would be able to see everything that happened play by play even though your PC was busy fighting for his life and the battle takes place over a wide area. So I tried something a little different to show the chaos of battle... only trouble is it took an ungodly amount of time to come up with something I was happy with. Hope this works.

Aww, did we lose one of the magic crossbows, @DragonParadox? Or were Antonio and Marcella able to save it? Or just retrieve it the old fashioned way?

Is Marcella badly damaged? How many ships were lost, and roughly how many of their crews? Did we lose anyone? How many Elementals were we able to destroy?

Haha, sorry for all of the questions.

I'm not too excited about lingering in the area with a mauled fleet, but Ohun is kinda important and he's done all right by us. He's probably the only one who can keep Lirman from going off the rails soon, too.

Haha, sorry for all of the questions.

  1. Ripper was able to recover the crossbow from the bottom
  2. Marcella is not significantly damaged though it did have to use most of its supplies of spars, sails etc to repair itself at sea
  3. 13 ships are heavily damaged, I did not do an exact accounting of how many they lost but assume 20% crew losses across he board
No problem, I like questions. :)

It was extreemly intense (chapters with dragon, Wyrdoki and Unke had more tension to me, but mostly because of premise). Great chapter, @DragonParadox !
I hope that there will not be such chapters in the future - not because it was bad, but because of whole danger of this situation. Oh, who am I kidding...

The real question here for anyone wondering is if you want to stick around and risk more losses or if you are fine sailing off without your leader. If you wanted to put Lina in charge... well now might be your chance. :V

Almost like it was planned that way... 🧐

There must be a decent amount of floating debris in the area. Any chance Marcella can surreptitiously slurp up some of that stuff to restock her available materials, or do replacement parts still need to be made to order?

They still have to be made to order, though that can be changed in the future depending on magical upgrades

Er...guys I am looking at 4 votes... not really enough to go on as far as the next update is concerned. Is anything unclear or just generally a not that interesting a vote?

Arc 14 Post 8: To Sink or Swim
To Sink or Swim

Twenty Eight Day of Elnu-Hamba (Elnu Descendent), 1349 A. L. (After Landfall)

With the Marcella in better form than most of the rest of the fleet Antonio agrees that it would be craven to argue for abandoning Ohun and as you had guesses would be the case no one wants to look meek in the face of the foreigners... especially such foreigners as have already stolen much of their glory, odd as that thought might still sit. When you were young you had thought being a hero, toasted and envied by all would be pleasant, but dreams do not reflect life under the sun. It is mostly uneasy and wondering when someone if going to drink too much or be prodded that inch too far into a challenge. Already the wait for Inge to find out more about Ohun had almost a half a dozen 'friendly' challenges, by which one means a lot of quaffing, a lot of chuckling and the all too real threat of edged steel.

"The old man will see you right," they say and that is how you learn once and for all the limits of Zaia's healing. It cannot mend that which is burned utterly in fire or torn from the body with blades. If you lose an arm the best you will be getting out of the deal is one of those ornate brass hooks you have seen some of the Anwa wear.

"It's a wonder they can scratch their asses with that thing..." Antonio puts his new gift for silent speech to good use almost making you spew the fish stew you had just managed to force down you throat. Poor Zuan does the best he can with what he has but it is clear Antonio ha not been spending that much of his time on provisioning back in Korman.

According to him he had managed a decent trade, but not among his masterworks. "You can only shine a jam so much, it isn't going to glow like gold," he says when you bring up the matter again. He is going to insist that is an 'old Genoan proverb' you are sure, though you give him a suspicious look . You had spent enough time among the crew to know he is pulling your leg half the time with that these days.

Gained 4,335 Gold

Before you can reply with an old Norman saying, something about the man who tries to sell the haunch of a lame donkey perhaps Inge comes into the cabin. She does not look much better than you had seen her these last four days, still with circles under her eyes and still her hair clings to her head with sea-brine. Many of the things she had been talking to in order to hopefully find Ohun had been of the sea and not the talkative gulls of the air. Still when she opens her mouth you have reason to hope: "I found Ohun..."

"Well where it is then?" Pokum, loudest of the people to ask for one of those duels, though you think also the one lest likely to actually take off a hand, asks.

"He's been taken captive by sea folk of some sort, the fish couldn't say what sort, since they are just fish and not cleverer beasts, but he's being kept near a bunch of shoals, near enough to islands really just six leagues or so t to the south. You'll have to go under the water, but I found some potions in Ohun's cabin so a few of us could sneak in..."

"How few is a few?" Antonio asks cautiously. A hush has fallen over the cabin when the girl had started speaking, now fallen amidst whispers and speculation, glory for the asking, peril for the having. You can almost guarantee someone is going to try to go, but should you, not even knowing what sort of foe you may be tempting.

"Five at most... but there aren't a lot of folk keeping him captive according to the fish, a handful...."

"When you say folk do you mean magicians, monsters?" you press.

"Nothing bigger than a sea cat, I'm sure of that at least."

What do you decide?

[] Try to rescue Ohun
-[] Write in with whom (up to five)

[] Get into contact with Lina again, more likely than not she is mixed up with all this.

[] Though you regret losing Ohun you will not risk the Fellowship to save him, let others try

[] Write in

OOC: I thought about doing this from Inge's PoV but there is only so much to say about playing Aquaman and talking to the fish.

Mandatory underwater level, right?

Good thing we have Ripper and Durendal works underwater. Zaia's bombs, on the other hand, might not work...

Inge can give us good swimming-skills, for a short time, combined with potions of waterbreathing, which last much longer, we are reasonably good.
And at E6 the chances of a Dispel are relativly low.
