Seven Stars Above: A Magical Girl's Quest to Make Ends Meet (Original, Magical Girl, Superheroes)

Voting is open
For now there is a tie between Shadow and Life, and Programming and Writing.

Edit: I just imagined her writing something in a paper and the paper becoming a flower, or running a program in her computer and it suddenly changing color and i wanted to share that.

[X] [ASPECT] Embarrassment burns in your cheeks, and more than anything you just want to hide. You don't dare open your eyes, for fear of mockery (not that she would mock you for it, not in any real way, but knowing that doesn't make you feel it). You wish you could just disappear. And suddenly, you're wrapped in the cool, comforting embrace of shadowy tendrils.

I'm a sucker for heroic darkness.

[X] [METAPHOR] Words, poems, essays, lines of text. Each element described, each picture with a thousand words.

Yeah sure, let's get meta, writing about writing :V

Time to write about the dark clouds of despair or something.

Let's be the shadow mid level manager magical girl.
The interns can't get anything done without some direction
and the orders from on high are dumb.

[X] [ASPECT] Is the thing broken? Are you broken? It can't be. This is your chance, the kind of money you could get could make the difference in your life, in your sister's life, in Mads' life. You can't let this slip away. If you did it'd be your fault. Wasting the chance to fix everything. Just one more failure. And then vines are reaching up from the floor, twining around you, and you know you can.
+Magical Aspect: Life
+Motivation: Guilt

[X] [METAPHOR] A set of building blocks, each containing aspects of power and effect, clear and easy in how they connect to one another.
+Mystical Metaphor: Building Blocks
You comprehend magic in a modular manner, as pieces which can be plugged together. It's relatively easy to alter effects on a basic level, or combine them, but very difficult for you to change their fundamental nature.

[X] [ASPECT] You're not the only one who's been approached by these mascots. You know that. Others have figured it out. Probably with help from those things. You scraped and clawed to get here, to get your sister here. In spite of your parents, in spite of the fucked-up system giving them so much control. You're damn sure you won't be shown up by some pampered brats. You won't allow it. And then pure, shining golden light surrounds you, and you know you have something to be proud of. Something that's yours.
+Magical Aspect: Glory
+Motivation: Jealousy

[X] [METAPHOR] Lines of code, inside the curve of every leaf, the shape of every cloud. It's all… procedural.
+Mystical Metaphor: Programming

What? I really want to see what sort of crazy nonsense we get randomly occurring. And being able to repeat it all once we've worked something out with ease appeals to me.

As for the Aspect, just really like either Life or Glory.

For Aspect, Guilt is two votes ahead of Fear, at 7 to 5. The votes are tied on Metaphor, with three votes each for Writing and Project Management. A single vote could easily determine the outcome here.

I would argue that project management works better with Life/guilt, as autonomous plant familiars would be more effective than trying to control them ourselves, especially as a newbie.

Writing prose that expresses itself as living magic just sounds really cool, tho. Plus it's the method that's best at abstract effects, which I think synergizes with Life quite a bit even if it'd be harder to be super-precise.

Either someone changed their votes or that is working wrong, i will count them by hand now.

Programming: 3
Writing:3
Projects:3

Life:7
Shadow:5

I counted them by hand, the tally is wrong for some reason.

Yeah. 3 for all 3 of them.

@AltF4152 it's counting both your aspect votes but not your metaphor. Try making a new vote post with only 1 of each instead.

Alright that worked. Both votes in tally.

That's precisely why I'm voting for it. And if Life can be used for healing then we might be able to make healing objects or minions?

Life in theory contains whole swathes of biokinesis-type effects, and healing objects aren't too out there. In practice, you're gonna need to work for the more indirect ones, as a magical girl's powerset starts out tuned to combat with Ruin Beasts and similar entities.

Fire in theory contains well, fire, passion, speed, aggression, and 'hot' energy manipulation.

Shadow in theory contains hiding, shadows (duh), shadow step/pocket dimension/dimension door type stuff, and otherwise messing around with liminal spaces.

Glory in theory contains social effects, some light narrative/probability alteration, offensive and defensive magic resistance, raw physical ability, and 'raw force' sorts of things.

All four can access a bunch of utility-type effects not directly mentioned, and all have some ability to summon elemental minions (though that's a fairly advanced trick).

What is the liminal?

All i know about liminal things comes from another quest where the liminal is a mix of memories, belief, dreams, knowledge, wills, spirits and pocket dimensions where libraries end up connected to another dimension because they have enough knowledge, and i figured that if that can happen then why not the internet being its own dimension?

Ah, ok, I see the confusion.

Liminal spaces are another word for transitional spaces, where one thing becomes another thing and is thus not really either thing but is kind of both. A hallway between two rooms is a kind of liminal space, as is a place where one neighborhood bleeds into another, or the place where a city is becoming suburbs.

The conceptual linkage here is that a shadow can be considered a liminal space, as it is neither fully in darkness nor fully illuminated. You can't talk about what a shadow is without relation to both concepts. Thus there is a natural conceptual expansion route.

Preliminary character sheets edited in here. Reproduced below for convenience.

You
    • Nicknames: Aly, Cat, Alley Cat
      Full Name: Alysanne Emily Kelly
      Age: 23

You. An ordinary, high school educated girl. You work a variety of jobs to pay the bills for yourself and your sister. You have scraped and clawed your way to get to where the two of you are, and you're determined not to let anything get away of that.
    • Motivations
Motivations are your core motivating beliefs and emotions.

      Family First
You'll move heaven and earth to keep your loved ones safe, and you're not going to think too hard about the things that you break in the meantime.
      Traits
Traits are less defining, but cover core approaches, skills, and so forth.

      Friends Keep a Shovel Handy
You're ready to drop everything to help your family, and if that means a body has to disappear, or appear, then so be it. You will not be shocked to the point of inaction or caught in indecision by anything you need to do for your family, nor will you linger overmuch on moral compunctions.

      She Deserves a Normal Life
Your sister needs your protection and assistance, not just a further source of guilt. She already feels bad over how much you do for her. You can't let her find out about the risks you take or unsavory things you do in her name. That would just hurt her more, and risk her doing something stupid.

Fear of rejection couldn't possibly be involved.
    • Liz (Elizabeth Kelly)
Your younger sister. You'll support her, keep her safe, and make sure she gets the opportunities to shine you never did. Woe betide anyone who tries to hurt her.

      Mads (Madison Bridges)
Your best friend. She's got your back through thick and thin, and you've got hers. She's family, whatever her genetics say.

The only one you've told about your powers.

      Christopher & Suzanne Kelly
Your parents. Neglectful, abusive asses. They can rot for all you care.

      Alexander Kelly
Your grandfather, recently deceased. The necklace that gave you your powers was inherited from him; he seems to have had some secrets he wasn't sharing.
    • Currently undetermined
    • Powers
Powers are the broad-strokes abilities you possess.

      Magical Girl Transformation
You can transform into a magical girl state, enhancing your capabilities to an unknown degree.

      Regeneration
You have been told that you will eventually recover from any injury that doesn't kill you. What that means in practice remains unclear.

      Others as-yet undetermined.

      Traits
Traits are skills, approaches, specific proficiencies with powers, et cetera

      An Eye for the Mystical
You have a good eye for detecting and understanding magic itself, as well as the capability of seeing the world through the lens of your Mystic Metaphor. Provides a form of magic-sight, though not necessarily the ability to understand what you're seeing.
    • Capybara
Your... mascot, you suppose? They appeared when you first transformed, and tried to rope you into fighting monsters without pay or benefits. They allowed themself to be talked into helping you make some money off of these Ruin Beasts.

Has proven mildly helpful when learning to use your magic, but not much more than that.

      Running-Against-the-Breeze
Someone else's mascot... probably? Appearing as a translucent fox, she showed up as you were about to give the capybara the bird, and pointed out ways you could make money off of killing Ruin Beasts, by turning their cores into valuables. Far more interestingly, she (unbeknownst to the capybara) also suggested you go into operation as an independent cape, whether hero or villain or mercenary and make money that way. She told you that she'll arrange to get some job offers sent your way once you do something public and capely to give her plausible deniability.

Another point in her favor, the capybara doesn't like her.

Family
  • Nicknames: Liz
    Full Name: Elizabeth Grace Kelly
    Age: 20

Your little sister. You got her out from under your toxic, neglectful parents and you'll be damned if you let anything keep her from reaching her goals.

Currently attending a local university, undecided as to her major, and doing part time work at the university library.
  • Nicknames: Mads, Maddy
    Full Name: Peony Madison Bridges
    Age: 23

Your best friend. The two of you have been inseparable since you were little, and you can't imagine anything breaking that now.

A digital artist, barely scraping by on a mixture of freelance contracts and commissions.

For a moment i thought that we had a pet capybara with no name, and since we probably are going to go with Life powers, i thought we could turn it into some abomination and call it fluffy, then i realized it was the capybara that came with the Magical Girl Package™.
