The Renaissance of the fifteenth century was, in many things, great rather by what it designed than by what it achieved.

Walter Pater

Anno Domini 1500,

It is the beginning of a Golden Era for the Continent of Europe, after many centuries being relegated to the backwater, of commerce, or history, and of Greatness. Constantinople, the City the World desires, had fallen to the Ottoman Turks, and their conquests nearly fifty years prior. The Black Death as it is so-called, and the great plagues have decimated the populations of Europe.

Millions lay dead. Yet the survivors flourish, in a world that is now in front of them.

Commerce flourishes in the great cities of Italy, as the great merchant republics, the banking families, and mercenaries that seek its fortunes. Controlling cities, Lands, and even the Church itself.

And to the West, there is a New World, ripe for conquest, for Trade. For Empire.

And you are a child, born in the path of this Era. You can become something greater than before.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Who Are You:

[]The Golden Prince: Your name is Charles, and your lineage is fabled. Born in Flanders to the Hapsburg Prince Philip, you are a child destined for greatness. You will be brought up by the Greatest of tutors, the most skilled of Generals, and the masters of statecraft and diplomacy. You will Rule the World, or die trying. (You will be Charles Habsburg. Prince of Spain, Son of Philip the Handsome, and Queen Joanna the Mad. )

[]The Blood of Gold and Exiles: Your Family was exiled from the city long before you were born. Exiled to France after the city turned on you. You have known life in France, but you will always long to hear the stories of Florence, the Italian Countryside, and of the city that was your family. (You will play as a fictional member of the Medici family, The Last Child of Lorenzo the Magnificent, born a year before he died.)

[]The Scum of the Earth: You are no one. You are a baseborn child, with no father, no mother, and no future. Yet you stand tall, both alive, and healthy. You were not supposed to survive. Yet now you have. And now The World is yours to carve. And Create (Create an Original Character)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This Quest can be historical in nature, but, I want to leave it up to you all just how much the World can, or will change due to your existence.

How would you like to Handle This?:

[]Historical In Nature: This is a world where your adventures are directly affecting nothing, save for the actions that have been primarily changed by your own effort. Trying to change the Strings of history and fate is not for the faint of heart, and while you may have that power and skill, you will be going through an uphill battle to try and change anything (There will be no rumor mill. Original Characters are few and far between, and their adventures can never affect history in such a way they won't replace another name. Your actions, if you become powerful enough to shape history, however, will cause changes, but never enough to take off from the path that history will follow. Special Traits are Locked out.)

[]Historical in Action Only: This is a world where adventure, actions, and consequence go hand in hand. You will have the power to shape events, big and small that can cause ripple effects all over Europe and the World. However, once the ball is rolling, you can only hope that can predict the great change coming to Europe. This is the Time of Rebirth, and it is up to you to shape that rebirth into the Modern World (The Rumor mill will only cover macro events between nations. Original Characters will be born and die, along with having adventures that can leave their mark on history, big and small. You are at the cusp of history, and history is in your hands to shape if you have the courage to shape it. Certain Special Traits are allowed, during creation and can be gained during the Game.)

[]History in Name Only: This is a World that did not get the memo. This is a world where the power of a single butterfly's flapping wings can create a tsunami across the ocean. People who can change the world are alive and kicking. So many people go off on their own adventures and shape history. This time of Rebirth is a time of Great Change. So go out there, and change the World! (Magoose Dice can and will be used when creating the Rumor Mills. Original Characters Galore! All Special Traits unlocked.)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Navy: 4/10: Thanks to the recapture of Pisa, the Great Cities Naval Capacity and trade to increase its wealth.

Manpower: 5/10 The Wars have been a drain on Florence's Sons, even with a victory. Much prefer coin and peace to steel and war

Sailors: 6/10 Italian Sailors are some of the finest in the world, at least in the Mediterranean. Their skill is known all over the world.

Wealth: 8/10 Florence is the wealthiest city's in the world. A Place of high art, of great culture, and money. The Florin is an internationally recognized and utilized coin all over Europe.

National Spirits:

The Florin: The Coin of the World, is the monetary coin recognized all over Europe, and, thanks to its never-changing design, perfect amount of weight, and trust from the other powers, it is considered the Standard in European Commerce. For now. (The Florin is the basis for much of international trade at the moment, and it brings great prestige to the city itself)

Professional Army: Machiavelli has turned away from the old traditions of the past, and has shunned the usage of mercenaries in the service of the state. Instead, he has called upon and trained men of the city, to fight and die for their home. He has been rewarded greatly for it, as has the city itself. (Army can never be lower than 5 thanks to these reforms)

The Birthplace of the Renaissance: This is the city where an Era was born, Where Europe, at least for a moment, remembered her glorious past. And Her beautiful future awaited them if they could just seize it. (??? The Light of Europe has been lit again. May it never go out)

Army: 6/10: The Kingdom is not known for its military prowess or its frontiers. It is known, however, for mercenaries and scoundrels that can fight and win.
Navy: 7/10: There are no Ture masters of the Mediterranean, but the Italians can claim that this sea is theirs, as it was in Roman times.
Manpower: 6/10 They say the men seek peace but will break the world. They than will go home.
Sailors: 8/10 Italian Sailors are some of the finest in the world.
Wealth: 4/10 Italy with its industries and art, at war, cannot survive
National Spirits:

The Florin: The Coin of the World, is the monetary coin recognized all over Europe, and, thanks to its never-changing design, perfect amount of weight, and trust from the other powers, it is considered the Standard in European Commerce. For now. (The Florin is the basis for much of international trade at the moment, and it brings great prestige to the city itself)

Bane of Pirates: Your Proclamations against the pirates of the world have made you enemies of the world. And those that see you as a threat are without question, some of the most skilled sailors in the world. (The Sailors of the World fear Italian might and wood.)

Bankrupt: Your nation can now no longer safely pay off its creditors, meaning any diplomatic and international creditors can now legally declare war on you without fear of retaliation to reclaim their lost money.

Please Note that this is a modified version of the Rules created by the Wonderful @Plausitivity, so thank him for this.

Rules
May contain violence, intrigue and manipulation etc.

There will be mentions of slavery, torture, exploitation, rape, all the fun stuff.

Be excellent with each other.

There will be more added, but for now.

Mechanics
This will be a system run on d100, and turns split into Half Years (Winter and Summer), but depending on your age and the events outside of your control (like going from a child to a preteen)

There will be smaller turns for events such as battles and character interactions.

Stats are a representation of how good you are at a general aspect mentally. Usually, stats are what you use to interact in person. YOu can only gain them by learning from others, like a teacher.

Skills are a representation of how good you are at doing something practically. You can gain increases in a skill by using it. You cannot gain skills the same way as stats, since skills are practical. Usually, skills are for interaction outside the personal scope. You can train to use said skills as well, but after a certain point, it will only be through actions that you can gain that coveted 25

If you only read but never lead, then you'll have a rude awakening when going into battle… But the same could be said for always leading and never reading.

Increasing a stat or skill will take time and effort, and the better you are, the harder it is to get better. Unlike La Chanson, you will actually have to commit to the area's. THere will be actions that require skills or stats.
Stats
Composure: Your Mental Ability to react and to remain calm. (Note, this trait is possibly the most important one in quest.)

Military: Your military knowledge, in strategy and tactics.
Charisma: Your social charm and personal magnetism.
Decorum: Your knowledge of formal etiquette and dress.
Stewardship: Your business and accounting knowledge.
Intelligence: Your ability to learn and process new information; useful in on-the-spot situations.
Subterfuge: Your court intrigue and general knowledge of how to sneak around.

Command Skills
Command:
Your ability to tell others what to do in a battle.
Calvary Command: Your ability to lead cavalry.
Infantry Command: Your infantry leadership.
Artillery Command:
Your ability to utilize this new kind of warfare.
Grand Strategy: Your ability to make long-term plans, helpful in campaigning.

Civil Skills:
Engineering:
Your ability to coordinate and conduct the construction of buildings and infrastructure.
Education: Your academic knowledge; helps with reading books and research.
Logistic:
Your ability to manage supply lines and troop upkeep.
Manual Labor: Your ability and willingness to get your hands dirty helping your people.
Law: Your law-making skills. Your ability to see them enforced.
Administration: Your country-running skills.

Combat Skills:
Marksmanship: Your ability to use firearms.

Swordsmanship: Your ability to use a sword
Athletics: Your ability to move through battle, and in stressful situations

Hand to Hand: Your ability to use your fists when disarmed, or when fighting.

I. Abysmal: You have no skill with this whatsoever, and are actively terrible at it. Any attempt by yourself to do this will be met with abject failure unless God himself takes mercy upon you.
(Levels 0-1) (-18-20 Modifier)

II. Very Poor: You are incredibly poor at this, one of the worst in Europe. You may succeed in using it if you blunder into success using what little you do know.
(Levels 2-4) (-12-16 Modifier)
III. Poor: This...is not your strength. Find some other way of solving your problems, if at all possible.
(Level 5-9) (-2-10 Modifier)
IV. Average: You are markedly average at this. Not amazing, not terrible, just...good. Depending on what occurs, your performance could be remarkable or awful, but you have a fair chance of either.
(Levels 10-11) (+0-1 Modifier)
V. Proficient: You're okay at this, showing some small skill in your attempts. Your performance is slightly above average.
(Levels 12-16) (+2-8 Modifier)
VI. Accomplished: You are quite skilled at this, proving to be significantly better than most. (Levels 13-19) (+10-14 Modifier)
VII. Renowned: You are famed for your skill in this, and it is likely your strongest and most adept trait. Most generals, leaders, and people of note which you encounter will have at least one renowned stat or skill -- it's necessary to rise high, after all.
(Levels 20-21) (+16-17 Modifier)
VIII. Epic: You are one of the greatest in Europe at this, and your exceptional talent for it is spoken of from one corner of the continent to the next. Actions you take with this are incredibly likely to succeed.
(Level 22) (+18 Modifier)
IX. Legendary: You are legendary, a generational talent whose renown and legend will long outlive you. It is almost impossible for you to fail at any task involving this.
(Level 23) (+19 Modifier)
X. Mythical: You are on the level of the myths out of old, a talent that has never been seen before and will never be seen again, a new Alexander.
(Level 24) (+20 Modifier)
XI. Renaissance Man: You are beyond even legend and myth -- your very name will redefine this field for all of time.
(Level 25)(+20 Modifier) (Reroll on all failed rolls)

Critical Rolls:
Natural Crits occur at 90-100, while Natural Fails are 1-5. You can negate a Nat. Fail if a bonus is applied to the roll, just be reasonable in the application of points (don't cheese).

Crits add another d100 to the roll and can explode (add another roll if that d100 results in a 95-100, and so on), so that's fun.

Artificial Crits are rolls that are boosted over 100 with bonuses and can be rerolled only once more.

Natural Crits can keep exploding if you're lucky.

Crit bonuses are arbitrary and subject to my own machinations. So I may forget things. Or you know, do something stupid.

How the World will view you:
Unlike La Chanson, where you have a reputation based entirely on the reputation of a general, where we, the character are set, and the history and how history views you is something that will be brought up in a different, more trackable way.

I call it:
The Legacy Points.

Legacy points are how much history knows about you, your exploits, and your effect on history.

The thing is, being a low-born, uneducated, or otherwise unknown in history, you will have an uphill battle to claim such a legacy.

You can do so by just living, breeding, and having a family, but that will only give you a very minor legacy score. and while you may gain that, its not enough.
How you get into history, is by shaping it.

There are many ways you can do that.

War, Politics, religion, science, etc, can all contribute to your legacy score if you keep going and committing to them.

Every time you commit to an adventure, do something insane, or just get mentioned by historical figures and are written down about, you gain them.

And well...

There are more ways to gain it. But I will leave that for you to figure out.

Not too much wackiness.

Just to be sure, @Magoose, is this going to be a (relatively) realistic version of history, or a high fantasy version like in your American Revolution Quests?

Relatively realistic in most options.

The last option is just asking me to say to Europe:

"May you live in interesting times"

Let's do this, Folks! Time to shape the World as one of the biggest Players in History! 'The Sun never sets on the British Empire'? Move over, you Tea-drinking Noobs, here comes the OG!
