WARHAMMER 40,000: ROGUE TRADER: THE CITADEL OF SKULLS (Roleplaying on the Farthest Frontiers)

RIP Nova cannon, we managed to fire it how many times? Two?

[x] We've been doing direct attacks for a while now and while each has succeeded, each has cost us heavily in blood and treasure. Lets...try sneaking in, then securing the Vault, then deciding what to do from there

We can probably take the vault in a fight barring demons, but fighting costs crew and morale. We might be able to intimidate them, but that cedes too much initiative for my taste.

You can do that! You basically have a free prow slot now!
Right, a free prow slot on the Colossus, because that's the one that lost a Nova Cannon. That, I was thinking of replacing with the Titanforge Lance battery on this station. Not quite as potent, but a good complimenting feature to the launch bays.

But for the Grav-Culverins, I was thinking of replacing the Mars-pattern Macrocannon broadsides of the Tachyon's Demise, Ryia's ship, with them.

One nice thing about the lances is that on a cruiser, lances can fire to port and starbaord rather than just to the fore, which makes them much easier to use.

Right, but my original question stands; does this port have the facilities to refit the Tachyon's Demise so we can upgrade from the current Mars-pattern Macrocannon broadsides to Grav-Culverins?

I wonder how good value we could get hastily retrofitting 1 or 2 of the Jerichos by shoving their holds full of a whole bunch of like asteroid rocks and the broken jetsam of the destroyed voidcraft and random bits and pieces of junk in the station, stripping some of the spare pirate gun batteries, and using them for planetary bombardment as like space ironclads and space bomb vessels in the space Napoleonic cutting out expedition.

Yes, definitely! With your crew and Phi, you can even do it relatively quickly. The bulwark was built to quickly repair, refit, rearm and restock ships exactly like yours. It's just it was meant to do it for pirate ships, not Rogue Trader ships, but you can't STEAL from pirates!

-[X] While we go planetside, the full resources at hand are to be used to restore the House Scourge fleet, cannibalizing purified components from the station where needed. While the loss of the Nova Cannon is a bitter, salted wound, the installation of the Titanforge Lance into the... newly free prow slot of the Colossus should prove a salve to the Machine Spirit's pride and hull. Meanwhile, the Grav-Culverins are to be inspected for any trace of Warp-taint and readied for installation into the broadsides of the Tachyon's Demise.
-[X] Let's use the low visibility to our advantage again, after our ships are repaired, start laying a minefield on the most likely vectors of approach. Six of our vortex shells can become vortex mines.

"No, Junie," he says. "A boarding action isn't any place for an officer as young as you." Then he grins. "But...since by the time the repairs are done, you will no longer be under punishment detail...how about this." He clasps his hands, leaning forward. "We'll need someone to oversee the other prizes and ensure that the monitors are dealt with once they strike. Say you stay in the see-eye-see of the Colossus and make sure that all goes well?"

Junie's eyes practically bug out of her head and she beams, sitting up and nodding hurriedly so much that you can't help but giggle.
A Good Navy Dad
You spared a glance...and saw, to your horror, that the entire prow of the Colossus was smoldering, ringed with twin concentric spheres of force, rippling out and away. The ship heeled - and then the shields rippled and detonations began to flare along her sides. Without her being able to be secured, the monitors - moving faster than you had expected - were hemming her in and taking advantage of the fact they could fire on her without threatening their station.
FUCK
FUCK
FUCK
"My name is Amaranthine Scourge, of House Scourge...and this station is now mine by Imperial right. You may take your knees while you breathe, or you may take your knees without your head, scum."
Wow. Tine getting a BAMF af "kneel, or you will be knelt" moment. You love to see it.
"Mom...what the heck do I do with this sword? The...captain gave it to me after his men surrendered." Junie sounds faintly exasperated. "Do I just have to keep this piece of shit sword?"
PHEW
Also lmfaooooo
The monitor has 40 hull versus the Colossus which has 11
Holy fuck the Colossus took a beating.
Yeah, prolly!

...sorry
Sometimes it be like that.

My concerns regarding sneaking in are that, well, are any of our characters actually GOOD at sneaking? Also, I honestly don't want to leave here without liberating ALL the slaves. ALL. THE. SLAVES.

Ahem. Anyway, we have more going for us in that regard than I think people may be taking account of. Our Barracks is a big boost towards military objectives for one, and we could use our support craft to assist with logistics for another handy boost. Further, we have a set of BG-15 Assault Scanners on the Colossus, which are "A set of phased forward mounted antenna sniffer and scrying aparatus, designed primarily for the identification of ground based targets, made to assist the coordination of invasions." Basically, it makes the ship better at conducting orbital bombardment. And we're planning to put lances on her. Lance orbital bombardments are both more precise and are HILARIOUSLY devastating to enemy units. I thought we also had some kind of ground structure we can drop from orbit that boosts our efforts for ground-based military objectives, but I can't find it anywhere in the Fleet informational so maybe I only dreamed it.

Further, here's the biggest thing. We've got their orbital fortress. We've got a whole by damn fleet up here now. Nobody is leaving or coming to this planet without our permission. Or in other words, if we're going to invade we can take a breath to hire mercenaries and maybe even make an Acquisition test to pick up some Aeronautica craft so we can use our launch bays in atmo, or even other goodies.

Actually, DC... is this fortress/dock well enough equipped that you would allow making Acquisition tests right here?

[X] They're chaos reavers. We patch up, we repair, we let our wounded heal, and we drop a full frontal assault on the Citadel of Skulls and we liberate every single last man, woman and child slave on this planet.
-[X] As the above, but we don't just repair and heal. While we're doing that, we leverage the full might and resources of the Scourge dynasty to bring in reinforcements and gear up (triggers separate vote for what to buy/hire).
-[X] As long as we're repairing, the full resources at hand are to be used to restore the House Scourge fleet, cannibalizing purified components from the station where needed. While the loss of the Nova Cannon is a bitter, salted wound, the installation of the Titanforge Lance into the... newly free prow slot of the Colossus should prove a salve to the Machine Spirit's pride and hull. I object. I really don't want to spend weeks/months/years hanging out in this system waiting for someone, friend or foe, to come through the warp.

dis!
it's on your character sheet

Best Quality Jovian Pattern Hab Base: A deployable barracks (40 people), comissary, medicae facility, command and communication hub complete with vox and auspex arrays, two storage sheds, a generatoria, and a prefab landing pad. Furthermore, this upgraded variation comes with a deployable bulwark with bunkers and heavy stubber turrets, with an adjacent labratoria for field survey and research.

also, as a reminder, this is Karrad Vall's base and you've had a real close run with just the defenses. His main wolfpack, if gathered and organized, outnumbers and outweighs you.

Actually, DC... is this fortress/dock well enough equipped that you would allow making Acquisition tests right here?

I shall mediate on this

A Teleportarium covers many sins when it comes to a lack of subtlety. Also, I reckon that liberation will be a much simpler process if the groundside commanders are dead and their subordinates are all busy filling the power vacuum before we start.

I would also like to free all the slaves if we can, and take care of the Scream. I agree that it's probably better to take over the citadel and work outwards if we can.

Hmm. Alright, consider me persuaded. It'll be a nice change of pace narratively too, I expect. Not that what's happened so far hasn't been CONSISTENTLY AWESOME, because it has. Just, y'know, switching things up a little can be refreshing.

This seems like a good idea too. Just because we can't use them as shells doesn't mean we can't use them.

Well, well, well, seems like no matter what choice is chose, the choice is...snows. Sneaks. You're sneaking! This means I get to, uh, actually use elements FROM the adventure now path rather than just making stuff up, how exciting!

CHAPTER THREE: The Cage and the Maw (1.6)
"We've been doing straight attacks so long, and while each has been working..." you sigh. "We're bleeding. Lets...try...just as an idea...sneaking in?" you ask.

The others nod.

"A small party, with the teleportarium primed to yank them back, and we can set down either in the main settlement or the Citadel-" Em starts.

"NOT THE CITDAEL," Phi says, immediately. "I HAVE DETECTED A TELEPORTARIUM SCRAMBLING DEVICE ACTIVE IN THE AREA - IT IS LIKELY TELEPORTING ANYWHERE WITHIN TEN KILOMETERS OF THE CITADEL WOULD LEAD TO YOUR MOST UNFORTUNATE DEATHS."

"Then a small party in the main settlement," Em says, tapping the pict of the map. "We can paint the armor to bein Vall colors and claim anything we damn well want. I don't think many people down there would argue with three people in power armor, not if they wanted to keep their heads. We secure intelligence, then see if we can't secure the Vault from the Inside. If we plant a teleportarium beacon, then you can pull us out through the scrambler?"

"YES. THE VAULT MAY ALSO BE MOVABLE AS WELL, DEPENDING UPON ITS SIZE, CONTENTS, AND IF YOU DISABLE THE SCRAMBLER." Phi says.

"Lots of ifs. Makes it fun!" Ryia says, grinning wolfishly.

As the ships are berthed and the preperations are made for mining the entrances in and out of this orbital area and Em begins to deliver thundering threatening proclamation to the colonies as the first half of the cover, you take some time to visit Junie and Zeph. Zeph first - they had worn the battle in the safest part of the ship, and was proud as pitch with how they had helped to throw their part in, including loading lasguns and tossing spent magazines into a furnace to recharge them quicker than finding a working plug-station. You had made sure they hadn't had any nightmares.

"Not after Mom Ryia made them go away a few weeks ago," they had said, pricking your memory of Ryia looking so exhausted upon arriving in this system. You put it into the back of your mind, and tucked Zeph away, then went to Junie.

She was curled up underneath her bedsheets, and when you stood in the door, you were almost thinking she was sleeping - until you heard her sniffling. "Junie?" you ask.

"M-Mom!?" She threw her sheets back and brought her glowglobe to life, wiping at her face with the sleeve of her oversized combat jacket at the same time. Her hair is bedraggled, and she is trying to look brave and chipper, but you can see she's been crying. You hurry to her, then immediately sweep her into a hug, drawing her close. "Mom!" This time, the tone is far more Junie-ish.

"Hey, it's okay," you say, grinning. "You can talk to your old Mom about this stuff."

"N-No, it's fine! It's dumb!" She blushes, then groans as you draw her even tighter into a hug.

"I'll promise, I will stop mothering you the instant you tell me, so, really, this is all on you..."

Junie sighs, then closes her eyes. She lays against you. "I..." she pauses, then whispers. "I...just...I-I'm a coward."

You blink. "J-Junie, honey...you were on the bridge of a ship being shot up by four monitors, then led a countercharge onto an enemy and took her in an hour. That's...not...cowards do not do that kind of thing." You say, as she curls up against you.

"T-Then why do I feel bad?"

You lay slowly back on the bed, so that you can cuddle her more. She buries her face into a pillow. "T-They say...suffer not a witch to life, to burn heretics, to kill Chaos worshipers. But...I don't feel good about...I...shot people, Mom. I...just...shot them dead."

"You fought the Rak'gol?" you ask.

"N-No, I just shot the seal-lock," she says, sheepishly, then sniffles. "I just...c-can't stop thinking about some...dumb pirate who was only as old as Dad, and he had this...piece of shit snubgun and no armor and I had carapace and a boltgun and twenty men at my back and I just...shot him in the chest and he exploded." She shook her head. "W-Who else would feel bad about that but a coward?"

You sigh, softly. "No, Junie. You're not a coward for not liking to kill." You close your eyes, leaning close to breath into her hair, gently. "It says in Book of Saints, that we are fated to live in the hundred thousand year siege. That we all wish we were born in better times, where our problems weren't so overwhelming and awful. That the...task wasn't so heavy. But...as it says: You do not choose what weights you are given, you only choose the way you carry them." You laid your head back, looking up at the ceiling. "And...sometimes, the best way to carry a weight is together. We're all born in the 41st millenium - we can't choose to be born during the Age of Rebirth, or...whenever the Emperor is healed and steps from the Throne, and the galaxy can at last know peace...but we can choose how we carry the weight ahead of us. And I choose to carry it with people I love, for people who cannot."

Junie is quiet for a long time, and you pet her head, slowly. She nods, slowly.

"Your...other mother believed much the same thing, I think," you whisper.

Junie lifts her eyes, and smiles sadly, then throws her arms tighter, squeezing you. THen she pushes you back, blushing. "Thanks, Mom." Then she's back under the blankets and you stand up, smiling.

When the door closes, she's sleeping.

----
"We're finalizing the details on power armor," Em says as you, Ryia and him walk down the corridor of the Revenge to the teleportarium. "By only sending us three, the recharge on the backcycle will be fast enough that we should be fairly safe."

"Cool," Ryia says.

"So, you two ready for a proper away mission?" Em asks, dryly.

You beam. "Very! In fact...I had a really good idea!"

The door opens, revealing...

...what's your really good idea?

Someone with better 40k chops check my logic please:

Alphas should work better for our team because of the possibles we get handed to us they're the ones most likely to be running six different ops nobody else knows about except on alternating Tuesdays, and thus don't need to be especially consistent, or in line with whatever else is going on.

That's BASICALLY Correct but also, it has the downside that the locals might not trust or want you around or...recognize you, since they're pretty obscure (intentionally.)

I feel like there is a flaw in trying to look like chaos space marines, in that we are not astartes sized and neither is our armor.

As much fun as the Alpha Legion would be, I think it is a very bad idea. Because that's how we wind up bringing all four of us back to the ship.

Which Segmentum are we in? Because if it's Pacificus, our best bet might be to decorate things to look like Blood Pact Goremages. Aka probably the scariest humans to face in combat because they are Khorne-aligned battle-Psykers. And nobody messes with the Blood Pact, because they have the ferocity and bloodthirstyness of any Khornate warband, and the discipline of a Guard regiment.

However, there is one smaaaaallll problem with using symbols dedicated to a particular Chaos god. Unless Tine managed to hide some symbols of Malal or Necoho. (Gods of "Chaos's Self Destructive Tendencies" and "Atheism", respectively.)

[X] The Power Armor has been refitted to appear, from the outside, to look like the armor worn by the Night Lords. With how infamous they are as raiders, no one would think twice about your presence at a pirate haven. And with how infamous they are for... other things, no one would likely be very inclined to try to stop you. That they usually don't go around bedecked in Chaos icons that make your stomach squirm just looking at them is an added bonus.

As a Thousand Sons player I feel obliged to vote
