If we're only a few days from the straights, we cant be in any of them - Madeira is the closest and it's 1000km of open ocean from the straights, a Mediterranean galley would not make it. Most be in some fictional closer island chain that glaciation uncovered.

I'm sorry about saddling you with the guards, Zaia! I still think it was a good idea, but you didn't deserve the frustration.

So, we're in the far distant past, in pre-historic times, likely in the early stages of the Late Glacial Maximum? Does that mean we're in an alternate Hyborian Age, @DragonParadox?

That is certainty an inspiration, but you will not be seeing anything specific to that world.

You are not a few days from the straights, you are 20-30 days from what the locals call the Mouth of the Wold

Travel north and see
Do we have a vague impression where the agrarian societies here end (very roughly) if we would go north?

Is the French and German northern cost (nevermind England) still considered part of the civilised world here, or just wild lands where humans are at best hunter-gatherers due to worse conditions for settled food-production?
Or is the border even further south, around the alps? Zaia mentioned mountains with only cold plains behind them.

It would be helpful to know how extensive the glaciation is at this point. That's probably not readily available information, though.

Beyond the coastal forests around the Blue Sea (Mediterranean) there are no settled people as far as the Anwa know, only nomads riding angor, whatever those are (all Zaia got was that they are horned and big enough to ride).

I don't think we're that far back. Seems like bronze age, hoping we don't suffer from any societal collapse anytime soon.

Well it is indeed the bronze age for the locals, but you will note this is not the Fertile Crescent and there are still mammoths and Neanderthals about. Just because agriculture started out in a specific place at a specific time IRL does not mean it was fated by the gods. The Paleolithic was really really long compared to any other age in human history and anatomically modern humans have been around a hell of a lot longer than that the narrow window of history. Who is to say it could not start sooner... or in another place?

Time to witness the Neanderthalsl Wars. I wonder if somewhere else the war is in full swing.

So do you guys want to see the Antonino interlude next or deal with Roland's reaction to Zaia's revelation? On the one hand I think the reaction would flow best, but I know you guys really want to see how the merchant and the money are doing since it was such a tight vote last update.

In fact I think it would be best to vote on it.

[] Antonio interlude as he tries to make his fortune, gaining friends and enemies in the process

[] A Whole New World (Roland's reaction to what Zaia found)

[X] A Whole New World (Roland's reaction to what Zaia found)

I personally, would like to see Roland's reaction.

Neanderthal fuckings more like. We as a species beat them out through out breeding, and out fighting them, we never really went "to war" so much as we battled it out for food and resources, war implies there's some state or nation or cause to fight for. And since Megafauna aren't likely to go extinct from over hunting and climate change anytime soon, they aren't going to rapidly lose population due to being unable to facilitate their bodies massive caloric needs.

This will be interesting and it will hopefully clue us in on any important information Antonio might have stumbled over.

@DP, that was an awesome twist. And I'm glad for the confirmation that those big, wooly animals are mammoths!

Well he did say woolly elephants. It's not like he would not recognize the tusks, given where he is from and that he is a well traveled person.

Not really much point in being coy about that.

Who knows, before it's all said and done, we might start up an order of Mammoth Knights...

I mean you do have animal handling as one of your best skills. :V

One of the votes that is coming up at the end of the arc is the question of where to go, south towards the sub-Saharan empires , north towards the steppe or east towards the islands on an island hoping adventure.

If you want mammoths you should head north.
