The Life and Times of Whitley Schnee (A RWBY Adventure AU)

Given his desire for adventures, and need to avoid attention that a child wearing something expensive would bring. So a hooded cloak would make sense, and be refreshingly practical compared to what Whitley is used to wearing
Let me put it to ya this way: wearing a T shirt, Jeans and tennis shoes is something our little snowflake has never done.

nor ever woe any real workout clothes like shorts and tank tops… he finds all of those things rather… foreign.
I mean if you want to stand out in a formal situation, and really stand out in everyday life if it is worn... I suppose it is a choice
Argus is on the Northern coastline and gets snow for about half the year.

a Santa hat would not look out of place, even in Summer.
Yea that is what I figured, and makes me think Whitley would be accepted without much fuss
Huzzah for bands of misfits!

Sounds like Whitley will be needing a friend to help with shopping for clothing that makes him blend in with the people of his new home.

Oh I have no issue with a santa hat as that makes sense, but a top hat simply does not make sense imo. Like perhaps once he is an adult, and needs to dress the part.
Huzzah for bands of misfits!
Whelp time to make a plan that has little chance of winning.

[X] Plan A Soon to be Merry Band of Misfits!
-[X]The Invincible Girl: Pyrrha Nikos is now the most popular girl in Argus... so why does she look at you with such longing eyes... Does she know your secret?
-[X]The Sanctum Route: You want to… be a huntsman. And maybe you can convince the headmaster in charge of Sanctum to let you in.

Because Whitley clawing his way up from the bottom of society after he purposely went there from the top, and making certain to honor the Schnee name by helping those around him climb together sounds like fun.

Besides huntsmen/huntresses in training are a valuable long-term investment that takes 8 years to show. Because most of them will remember Whitley was the person who trusted them when they were at their lowest to cover what the government wouldn't cover for them in expenses, and gave them a zero interest loan.

So what are our long-term plans for Whitney? Do we want to set up our own business / philanthropic organisation (see reference for 'make cash in a way that will help people') ? Do we want to have him train up as a Huntsman? Considering that we've got two years until the start of the canon RWBY series, which in turn means we've got three years at most before the Fall of Beacon and the ensuing chaos, we're really going to want Whitney to have at least some combat skills so he can defend himself. But do we want him to go full Huntsman? Or maybe see if we can still run a business while attending Sanctum to fund our career? What do you think?

Honestly I think that we need to train enough to not become a burden during fights, but I think becoming the strongest is not the best way to help people. I think we are more likely to help people becoming an organisation so strong we have a presence in all cities, because even if we become strong enough to one-shot a leviatan or beat up a maiden we can't be everywhere. But what if we can recruit the maidens ?

[X]Plan : Mistery option
-[X]A Blade and a Wielder: You want to be able to at least use the Blade… So it's time to start Training.
-[X]Wander: You are going to wander around the city… maybe you'll find something interesting.

But what if we can recruit the maidens ?
Unless you can somehow make Raven abandon a world view that has both kept her alive and off of Salem's radar?

Spring is out.

Winter Maiden is Still old and dying.

Amber is… well let's just say Amber is not what I call a people person, and is so paranoid that only Ozzie is considered a friend.

Summer? Well Summer is the only one we can do anything about… and she's on an adventure.

I said no shipping Whitley with anyone, he is a kid… This is your last warning.

Whitley is 12 which would make Pyrrha 15, so if you want to avoid hints of shipping you might want to avoid describing the way Pyrrha looks at Whitley as 'longingly', as that's often used in a romantic sense.

Has to be absolutely adrenaline junkies.

Basically it's the equivalent of DocWagon in the Shadowrun setting. Anyway those sort of services should be provided by the academies as part of their standard service, in order to improve the odds of survival for their students. We might be able to offer that as a service for Huntsmen who have graduated from the academies and are looking to pay for the equivalent of health insurance and combat extraction.

The difference between those who attend combat schools like Sanctum/Signal/etc, and the four primary schools is that those who attend the latter haven't been weeded out after failing to demonstrate the potential to become professionals permitted to take jobs no questions asked across the world. So I'd consider the goal to be Beacon as they're individuals with pretty good odds of becoming licensed professionals, and while Whitley would need to look up what the criteria for doing so there should be an available route for doing so.

Basically in a lot of ways if you can figure out a viable path to one of the four primary schools without attending the preparatory schools you're saving a considerable amount of time presuming you have the determination + money* to "self learn" like Whitley can, or even Pyrrha. Most students are unable to do so as they in fact still growing up.

Actually, if Sanctum is the equivalent of Signal which Ruby attended, those schools are for younger students instead of being in direct competition with the four main academies (Beacon, Shade, Haven and Atlas). Ruby mentioned that she had been bumped ahead by two years to attend Beacon at the start of the series, and the fact that she was 15 as opposed to 17 was a real cause of tension. Basically Sanctum and Signal are high schools while Beacon etc are universities for aspiring Hunters. So Whitley attending Beacon at the age of 14 is pretty much a non-starter, especially as to get into Beacon at 15 Ruby had to demonstrate a really high level of skill developed from training to be a Huntress from childhood (and also have the silver eyes).

*Money is a significant issue as the cost to get the expertise to learns those skills is being covered by the government, and you need licensed professionals whose hourly rate isn't cheap.

Hm. Personally I think it is best to avoid at least the perception of messing with a governments monopoly of force within human civilization, and there are some pretty strong cultural beliefs toward freedom in modern Remnant meaning it would be difficult to promote, which is why they do a rather loose system using a job board post graduation excluding Atlas.

Although I think you're onto something if we can get the kingdoms to make money huntsmen/huntresses invest into stock as tax free, and build up a rapport with enough students who will be more willing to set aside money to have sufficient capital flow to form the foundation of a company. Huh one of the easier ways to do so would be to attend Beacon as barring changes to canon there is considerable celebrity power present, and they can create a trend to turbo charge the company via endorsement while increasing their financial security via say a percentage of the company stock.

In the wake of the Treaty of Vytal which ended the Great War there were extensive military cutbacks and the Academies such as Beacon were founded to aid the training of Hunters, so it appears the government monopoly of force we take for granted doesn't apply in Remnant. In fact James Ironwood holding positions as both the Headmaster of Atlas Academy and the commander of Atlas' armed forces causes a great deal of friction

Actually do you think creating a company that sells health insurance to huntsmen/huntresses in the "Hit buttons to call pararescue team on standby to zoom to your location stabilize you, and if possible complete whatever job you were doing "Because they're crack huntsmen/huntresses who love the challenge that comes with this job"? It would cost a pretty penny, and likely be something we'd need a large pile of Lien to cover all the equipment plus contracts alongside everything else.
[/QUOTE]

Considering that the Treaty of Vytal which ended the Great War directly led to military forces being scaled back and the Academies such as Beacon being founded to train more Hunters, it seems that the idea of government monopoly on violence is a lot less than in our modern world. Max Weber's 'Politics as a Vocation' describes a government's monopoly on the legitimisation on the use of force, not on the physical means of exercising that force, and we see that in Remnant - the Schnee Dust Company has military-grade security forces to protect its facilities, it seems that the Hunters are set up to be independent agents for hire (James Ironwood being both the Headmaster of Atlas Academy and the commander of Atlas' armed forces is a cause of tension), and the open carriage of weapons up to grenade launchers (Nora!) in the street doesn't seem to raise any issues. So if we try to start a venture to make it easier to get Huntsman training like you seem to be suggesting we shouldn't run into any trouble from the government.

The only way you will get into the academies early is if you find magic, give lionheart his spine back, by way of ramming a steel bar up his ass, or you bribe… bribe everyone.

He has no interests in romance right now… he's interested fully in restoring the Schnee name and making a profit.

not necessarily in that order

But we need some big pockets to even do something like that… and that requires experience and blood… and capital to pull off.

Basically in Remanant you have any sort of weapon ever because there are giant monsters trying to kill you.

A New Blanket
A New Blanket:

- [X]Find a Place to Stay: You need to find a place to stay. A Place to Sleep, Eat, and… other things. Rolled: D100 => 64+5+10 (Money)=79

You looked at the apartment. It was a small loft, a bedroom, kitchen dining room combo, with a shower. The furnishings were added in and there was a connection to the CCT.

This place was perfect, and it only cost you 20,000 Lien to rent it for a long time.

"Yeah the previous owner left in quite a rush, and he didn't even pay. We already took all of his equipment and gave it to the police, but if you find anything, let us know." The landlord stated.

"Who lived in this apartment?" You asked.

"Don't know, some doctor who was a techie. He always muttered about things he lost out on his chance. Left the city in a hurry when some Atlas Soldiers disappeared."

"You think he did it?" You asked.

"Who knows. All I know is that the asshole didn't pay rent his entire time here." The Landlord sighed. "Why are you asking so many questions, kid?"

"Just curious." You asked.

Reward: You now have a safe place to stay at night. To rest and recover. +2 Actions.

-[X]The Invincible Girl: Pyrrha Nikos is now the most popular girl in Argus... So why does she look at you with such longing eyes... Does she know your secret? Rolled: D100 => 94+5(Social Malus ignored by DETERMINATION!)=99

You saw the girl with red hair before she saw you… or was it the other way around, you didn't know, but the sword you carried on your back was… comforting, giving you the courage to walk up to her.

"I never got to thank you for the save from the cops." You stated, sneaking up on her, causing her… you didn't feel anything, but the sword seemed to move on its own, like it was alive off your shoulders, before it rested back, the strap softly tugging down.

"I don't know what you are talking about." She replied.

"So you're just an identical twin of another girl with red hair?" You replied, folding your arms. "I may be young, but I'm not stupid."

Far from it.

That made her scratch the back of her head. "Oh… Hello Again." She gave a nervous smile. "Pyrrha Nikos."

"Cole… Cole Crystal." You replied, offering a hand.

Hesitation went up the spine of the redhead. "You… were the one who the men from the officer were talking about? The Wonder kid… you're a child?"

You sighed. "Surprised?"

"No… Amazed. I thought that… I was young getting burdened with trying to provide for my family." She stated, sounding more awestruck than jealous.

You rolled your eyes. "I don't have a family… at least any I care about, I'm all on my own."

That made the redhead frown. "You're an orphan?"

"Far from it, though I wish I was, it would make my life make far more sense... My father is an asshole, and my mother is a drunk who both neglected and abused me for their own ends, so I left them." You replied. "I love my sisters, but I never felt safe. So I left, striking out on my own like my family always has."

"Are you trying to become a huntsman?" She asked.

"I don't know. All I want to do with my life is live it well enough to make my grandfather proud." You stated. "And no offense, I don't think he would approve of me being a huntsaen when I can do something far more with my time and energy."

Pyrrha frowned. "I'm… well I'm just, surprised."

"About what?" You asked.

"You strike me as a huntsman… or at very least consider to be one." She said, seeming confused. She must have built you up somehow… but now… it was a shattered mirror.

Your mind flashed back to a bloody hand, a broken mirror…

A Snowflake Glyph.

The happiest day of your short miserable life.

"Well, I have the freedom to choose. You do too." You replied. "You just need to stand up for yourself and take charge of your own fate. Of your own destiny."

Pyrrha Investigation roll: D100 => 25+20(Genius)+5 (Diligent)-10 (Shy)=40

She nodded. "I… Thank you Cole."

She seemed lost in thought, like she was trying to piece something together, but brushed it aside. "I hope we get to see each other again."

"I hope so too." You replied. "Maybe we can talk about fate and destiny, and how we can change it."

Reward: Ally/Employee Met: Pyrrha Nikos (Rank: Sanctum Student, Amateur Adventurer)

New Actions Available.

Winter Fluch: Grandfather's Greatsword, an elegant weapon from a far more honest… civilized age, one without Jacques Schnee existing to pollute the Schnee name (Due to your size, you only gain a +5 to combat rolls. It fills you with determination whenever you hold it. Every Two Turns, a Random Roll will no longer suffer a Malus, as the determination fills you with the courage to go beyond your training, making you rank up 1 level for a random stat for that turn. Continued Unknown Effect)

We can't poke around our own appartment in order to find some goodies that Watts left behind? Why is that not a thing in the options?

So... here's a plan!

[X] Plan Money and Dust
- [X]Making Things Square: You are going to found your own business, and you were going to make cash in a way that will help people. (Start Building a business Turn)
- [X]The Sanctum Route: You want to… be a huntsman. And maybe you can convince the headmaster in charge of Sanctum to let you in.
- [X]A Blade and a Wielder: You want to be able to at least use the Blade… So it's time to start Training.
- [X]The Businessman's Guide for Dummies: You are a skilled businessman and diplomat… but you are not your father. Not Yet.(Due to Smarter than Smarties, this will go up two ranks instead of one if successful)

A little bit of Money actions, and a little bit of Huntsman actions.

Enough to start our way towards becoming Scrooge!

[X] Plan Crystal Inc.
-[X]Hire Some Help: You need to get some employees, people who can help you with your ambitions. There are bound to be some people here that are willing to work on the ground floor of something amazing! (Start a Hiring Turn)
-[X]Making Things Square: You are going to found your own business, and you were going to make cash in a way that will help people. (Start Building a business Turn)
-[X]A Prince in the Making: You are rather unfinished in social education. You need to refresh yourself. Make yourself seem less awkward.
-[X]Underground: You need to practice the other… unsavory skills that are needed to survive this world. Time to be good.

Reasoning:

Hire Some Help and Making Things Square: These seems like they would chain together very well. Also, I suspect that hiring help might give us more actions. And we can always use a consistent source of income.

A Prince in the Making and Underground: I think it would be a very good idea to remove our penalties to Social and Scheming as quickly as possible, although I can be persuaded to swap Underground with A Line since that's probably time sensitive.

[X] Build Credentials and Feel the Burn
-[X]The Businessman's Guide for Dummies: You are a skilled businessman and diplomat… but you are not your father. Not Yet.(Due to Smarter than Smarties, this will go up two ranks instead of one if successful)

[X] Plan Sharp Dressed Swordsman
-[X] A Prince in the Making
-[X] The Spartan Route
-[X] A Line
-[X] Underground

* Start working on our social abilities - we've got a major malus on this and, as we're going to be interacting with people on a regular basis, I'd like to get as good with our social-fu as possible as quick as possible.
* Start working on our combat training - even if we're not going to be a Huntsman we're probably going to want to be adventuring at some point, and we're certainly going to want to be able to defend ourself. Pyrrha is described as being a good teacher, and this could be a chance to get closer to her as a friend and a possible employee.
* Corporate employment should enable us to make even more money, and I'd like us to build up as much money as possible as quickly as possible, so we've got more resources to spend when we go about setting up our own business. We've still got a couple of turns before Jacques starts looking for us again, so having a somewhat higher profile when we join a company shouldn't be as much of a problem, and it should die down by the time Jacques starts looking again. Plus, if we can play the social game correctly we might be able to make contacts in the corporate world, which would be a great help when we set up our own company.
* Start training our inner sneak and schemer - when Pyrrha barely kept us from being caught by the cops and dragged back to Jacques we received a serious wake-up call as to how much we need to improve this, especially if we're going into company work.
