The passive effect, yes. I cannot remember if they can actively alter the memories of nonmagical humans who they know have seen too much. If so, they'd hate to do it because it wastes energy, of course.

Well, there's probably a lot of things the bunnycats can do and fewer that they actually do. And probably fewer still they do regularly or systematically.

OOC, you can assume they'll probably stay hands-off for anything short of a moderate-to-large-scale unintentional reveal of magic. IC, you could always ask Kyubey for details? I mean, he's been pretty reasonable about answering that sort of question.

- [X] Leave a note for when she wakes up
People voting this, quick question: What does the note actually say? Is it an apology for chasing her around? Our contact information and a full manifesto of everything we believe in? A carefully worded expression of concern that she is running around conducting emotional amputations? General flailing attempts to express emotions that she will find appealing based on our guesses as to her psychology?

The actual contents of the note could make a pretty big difference in how she acts, particularly towards us, moving forward.

On a related "needs more detail" topic, the vote is supposed to cover tomorrow morning/school. Is there anything it's vital to get done in that timeframe, or social interactions we really don't want to miss?

Natsuki comes to mind as a possibility since she's been magi-therapied via Minami, and we don't want that situation to sit indefinitely so planning out our approach is in order, but there may be other key concerns in the next sixteen or so hours this update will apparently cover. This may also be the wrong time to approach her but that should be something we decided rather than something we forgot.

Hm, I probably should have included a "write-in what to say" bit for that option, huh? Ah, well.

If nothing is specified, assume it'll just be a quick summary of what happened and how she ended up somewhere else wrapped up in a contextually-appropriate quantity of Yui-isms. Adding other stuff to the note could have positive or negative effects beyond that.

Obviously your options are pretty limited when it comes to during-school-hours stuff, but it wouldn't hurt to make the most of it--keep in mind that you have an after-school appointment to take newbies through a Witch barrier with you and Maiko, you're sort of expecting more serious attacks from at any time, you may get a "let's talk now" message on short notice from Oshigiri at basically any point, you have a family obligation on Friday, and various other less-urgent issues.

I got nothing for coherent plans of things to happen tomorrow morning/during school, but if someone has a good idea I'll incorporate it. I suspect there's at least one useful thing to do. Some sort of exchange with Natsuki might even be the right thing, but there are a bunch of things going on. Maybe some sort of small brainmail meeting with the hoboguca who can attend? Give someone something to do? Yui did delegate quite a few things this evening, so keeping that up would be a good idea.

Re: note to Kyoufu. I'm thinking:
  1. I mean you no harm and apologize for chasing you around.
  2. I want to talk later.
  3. Please stay safe and gather up your creations. It's not safe for anyone to have them loose.
I'd like to delegate someone to talk to Kyoufu, though. Maiko seemed pretty confident she'd be able to make a gadget to render someone immune to the fear aura, which would substantially improve the ease of handling Kyoufu. I'm not sure whether socialing Kyoufu has to be a job for Yui or not.

Thinking about Kyoufu's description of being obsessed with comforting the fearful, she doesn't sound too hard for a meguca to get along with, because meguca are by nature isolated from broader society and given plenty of things to fear. If someone can be immune to the fear aura without setting her off, and show some unforced fear to placate her need to comfort the fearful, that could be enough to start a serious conversation.

Edit: One more thing, I'm wondering if it might not be a good idea to arrange a frank conversation between Maiko and Shinobu. Maiko is kind of a deft hand with newbie meguca, and she knows the witch bomb, which is one of the things that upsets Shinobu, and she's just super worldly especially about the consequences of various wishes and how to deal with them.

Like, okay, so Kyoufu didn't like it when I bulled my way through the fear aura, right? And it made her even more afraid and anxious herself. She's comfortable around people who are scared, and scared around people who aren't.
I'm not so sure about the whole get answers out of Kyoufu with an anti fear aura, because there's implications that that will just replace Maiko being too scared to ask coherent questions with Kyoufu being too scared to give coherent answers. Long distance communication might be for the best.

Naw, I think we worked out a solution: directed emotion.
Instead of blind rage, work up a righteous anger.
Instead of blind terror, be afraid of what might happen to Kyoufu if it goes wrong.

Discussion seems to have died down, so I'm thinking I'll be closing the votes soon-ish unless people want to add stuff about leaving a note for Kyoufu and/or what to do in the morning.

I kinda want to make a competing vote, gimme a bit

Edit: I actually drafted a competing vote earlier, but felt unhappy with it and deleted it because it was too similar to all the other votes. Then I realized that all the votes look the same because they kinda had to by necessity. We have a handful of prompts that we need to answer, which pushes this vote into looking like we're filling out a multiple choice quiz instead of coming up with anything unique or unexpected.

So I'm just gonna make my vote both unique and unexpected while following the strict multiple choice format anyways. Yolo

I mean, you're always welcome to go completely off the rails. Or at least suggest going off the rails and not get voted for, that's an option too.

Like I said earlier, the structured format like that is mostly to remind people that there are multiple things Yui needs to be concerned with and to ensure the vote does enough to make an update out of. As long as you cover the outstanding issues of Yui's injuries and Kyoufu, you can arrange a vote however you want?

And you're not limited to my suggested options, you could, say, wake Naoko up to heal you and then take Kyoufu along with to an actual sleepover at Asami's place. I mean, that's probably the worst possible choice that's still plausible enough to not get vetoed, but still. :V

[X] Plan: Eyes on the prize

Before anything else:
[] Hug Maiko and apologize for scaring her
-[] Impress upon her that you're serious about learning from your mistakes, talk through what happened and what you might've done differently a bit. Maybe while moving Kyoufu, or overnight if there's much to say.

Deal with Kyoufu:
[] Take Kyoufu to somewhere out of the way nearby
-[] Leave a note for when she wakes up
--[] Ask her to call Maiko when she wakes up, leave her number, change and directions to a phone booth (thanks Minami). Add a note (...to the note) that we'd like her to stop creating her 'friends' at least until we've gotten some answers about them, and to keep them away from the public.
[] If Kyoufu wakes up while you're around...
-[] Try to convince her to leave the aura off
--[] You are genuinely scared of the aura. Use that fear to set Kyoufu at ease. Finish the note, pass it to her and run away in (slightly feigned) terror.

Healing up:
[] Have Maiko teach you the basics of healing, use your power sense to help.
-[] If it looks like it'll take too long, brainstorm ideas about getting past your parents and into your bedroom for the night, where you'll finish healing yourself before sleeping.
--[] These ideas include but are not limited to: Illusion magic (Maiko?), Makeup skills (anybody?), Stealth Magic(Minami?), And just climbing in through your bedroom window as a last resort (definitely Minami).
---[] Make a mental note to use or acquire healing for physical and mental fatigue if you miss out on too much sleep. Hopefully before school, definitely before magical business.

Other stuff for the night:
[] Get a quick report from Minami and Yumi about the newbies they found.
[] Assign Maiko some stuff to do overnight
-[] Ways to block emotion auras--even if makes them less cooperative, Kyoufu's aura is too debilitating and there might be others that are as bad.
-[] Research the current situation with her grimoire
--[] Hopefully she can speak with Kyoufu on the phone and gain information she can use for her Grimoire. Otherwise, she can talk to Yui who will be staying up learning to heal herself to brainstorm ideas
---[] Leading theory is magical girl tore out parts of her soul the same way these living emotions tear the unfamiliars out of other people. None of it is intentionally malicious or harmful, but become so as an unintended consequence
---[] Alternatively, throw out the idea that there is no 'main' girl anymore, just a number of fragments who share an equal split of the soul
---[] A less popular idea is that these girls were full people before being stripped of everything but the emotion they embody?
---[] Also note the apparent motives of the emogirls (Can we just call them emo for short? Is that misleading?), And their likeness to eachother.

Having Tomo heal our mental fatigue is a good idea. This way we also make progress towards being able to forgo sleep entirely, while having a safety net if things go badly. (Hopefully she knows how to do that; that seems like the major issue with your plan. @Echo, could you let us know if Maiko knows enough to know that this wouldn't work?)

[X] Plan: Eyes on the Prize

Healing up:
[] Short-term plans include make-up or illusions to get you home in bed safely and without concern.
-[] Get a crash course in healing from Maiko, try to figure it out tonight in your room with Maiko in your head. Might be tired for school tomorrow.

I'm uncertain how....viable isn't the right word, but how possible this is? Are we getting the illusion from Maiko, and if she can't do that does she have the makeup and makeup skills required to do this? If not, who does and can we get over to them in a reasonable timeframe?

Other than this I'm pretty fine with the plan, but maybe I'm forgetting something on whether or not this is reasonable?

Maiko likes to cosplay as a respectable adult. That should be answer enough :V

If you're really not satisfied, I can try to work in additional backup plans up to and including Minami's stealth magic.

(Hopefully she knows how to do that; that seems like the major issue with your plan. @Echo, could you let us know if Maiko knows enough to know that this wouldn't work?)
I don't recall the precise quote, but I'm reasonably certain Tomo's healing was said to work on physical and mental fatigue. This may or may not have been included as part of a different conversation about the lack of sleep thing, and how magic can be used as a supplement.

Actually if Echo doesn't respond first I'll go look for it, never a chore to go back and reread parts of this story.

Yeah, I'm not sure how this is supposed to work, either. Maiko probably has something, but waiting for her to go home and find some obscure gadget would take who knows how long, Yui doesn't have any such abilities herself, and none of your allies can place permanent magical disguise effects.

Haruka might be able to do mundane make-up well enough to hide the bruises. It'd be either that or meet up with Minami and have her use her short-term memory blocking magic to make sure the bruises aren't noticed.

Maiko mostly relies on a combination of minor healing magic to keep her complexion clear and, on the occasions when she's overused her wish magic and looks like death warmed over, just not really caring. :V

Tomo's healing clears fatigue, yes.

Also, while healing others in general tends to be difficult, Maiko can construct special-purpose healing spells that are tied to either an individual or a type of healing, and "clear mental fatigue" is one of the few that's been broadly useful.

That said, it won't really help with the "learning to not sleep" bit, because the "shortcut" to that relies on pushing through the symptoms of severe sleep deprivation long enough for subconscious magic to jump to a "long-term fix". Simply healing away fatigue doesn't eliminate the underlying need for sleep, and increases baseline corruption gain by a significant amount.

Actually if Echo doesn't respond first I'll go look for it, never a chore to go back and reread parts of this story.
Maiko clears her throat. "Incidentally," she says, "you do realize that physical exhaustion is a condition that can be 'healed' by magic, right?"

"...eh?"

"It's far too costly for sustained use," she says, "but if you need to go without sleep for a few days in a crisis, it's not difficult to do."

You blink. "Oh, uh. Okay then."

"If you can't figure out how to heal yourself, I can do it for you," Maiko says. "Furthermore, according to my grimoire Tomo's healing magic can also clear mental and physical fatigue."

"...good to know."

Yeah my list of plans included in that section but not specified looked something like this;

1-Maiko uses or creates a spell to hide the bruises. She can give people wings, this shouldn't be too hard right? You just have to get past your parents
2- It was too hard. Instead, Maiko applies Makeup. As a cosplayer, surely she has some basic skills with this right? (Wrong by word of Echo)
3- Maiko either doesn't own the right types of Makeup or doesn't have the skill to use it. Does anybody else nearby have these things? What kind of time-limit are we on here anyways? (Candidates include Yumi, Minami, potentially Asumi, and at the extreme end the Idolguca (Sayumi? Forgot her name again Sayuki! I was close)).
4- Nobody has makeup, you're out of time, gotta get home NOW. Minami, does your magic work to help me hide my injuries? To help me sneak past my parents? Can you just help me crawl in through my bedroom window?!? Or maybe Maiko can make me invisible? Maybe I can just rush past through the house and up to my room? Sanic time gotta go fast

4 is a mixture of desperate backup plans all intended to get her to her room with no real interaction with her parents, which may or may not be likely in the first place idk.

So I guess I can include more specifics in the vote if necessary? Or does anybody have any other ideas?

I mean I guess we can just use Asami as an excuse but... Eh. I don't want to do that too often.

Getting into her room safely shouldn't be too much of an issue... probably. She rarely sees her parents in the evenings anyway, and she can get in through the window if necessary. It's a minor chance overall. Running into her parents in the morning is somewhat more likely, and obviously she'll be walking to school with Natsuki.

The main issue is that if her parents do see her looking like that they're really not going to react well.

EDIT: I'm gonna leave things open for a while longer, since I'm kinda tired tonight and wouldn't really get much writing done anyhow. Expect voting to close in 20 hours or so, unless there's active discussion going on at the time.

Tally changes depending on if @Krika and @Shaseyu are okay with my plan or not; apparently they voted crimson doom by name and so followed his vote to mine. There's an option you can check in the tally to switch between allowing that process or not.

I either have a tiny lead of 3-2, or a large lead of 5-1.

Edit: not sure if any of the 1 vote plans should be merged, that might change the outcome a bit, but I'm personally too lazy to spot the differences.

[X] Plan: Soulful Conversations
Dealing with Kyoufu. I added a couple of bits onto redzone's options, and I think they improve the situation. I changed the plan for dealing with fear aura from being afraid of the aura to Reasonable Meguca Fears, which I think will do a better job at keeping Kyoufu lucid and sociable (it's not clear to me that these things don't understand what kind of fear/anger people are feeling).
[] Take Kyoufu to somewhere out of the way nearby
-[] Leave a note for when she wakes up
--[] Ask her to call Maiko when she wakes up, leave her number, change and directions to a phone booth (thanks Minami).
[] If Kyoufu wakes up while you're around...
-[] Try to convince her to leave the aura off
--[] Use your entirely reasonable fears related to this indifferently cruel business of magical girldom you've gotten into to keep her lucid
--[] Try to get her to stop making monster things, take care of the ones she's already got, and get a means to contact her

This bit is probably a value-add either for Maiko socialing Kyoufu, or for Maiko researching Kyoufu
[] Share your suspicion with Maiko that Kyoufu is obsessed with comforting those who harbor fears that they're afraid to admit to, even to themselves. She might be befriendable.

For healing, I generally agree to the types of actions being discussed, but if we have the opportunity to heal visible injuries before going home we should take it.
[] Spend as long as necessary working on it to make sure you don't look injured tomorrow.
-[] Get a crash course from Maiko now. If it'll be quick enough, just heal up before going home, otherwise use sneakery and then continue healing. Plan C is makeup.

I think consoling Maiko is important. Like, I half-expect Yui to do something along those lines anyway, but I'm voting it. Maiko is wise and experienced, but she's stoic, and not actually half as put together as she manages to project. And I think the business with Muhou might have poked some wounds.
[] Hug Maiko and apologize for scaring her
-[] Impress upon her that you're serious about learning from your mistakes, talk through what happened and what you might've done differently a bit

This block is fine. I like the speculation on the nature of These Things, and hope it helps Maiko with her research.
---[] Alternatively, throw out the idea that there is no 'main' girl anymore, just a number of fragments who share and equal split of the soul
---[] A less popular idea is that these girls were full people before being stripped of everything but the emotion they embody?

My reactions to your changes

I changed the plan for dealing with fear aura from being afraid of the aura to Reasonable Meguca Fears, which I think will do a better job at keeping Kyoufu lucid and sociable (it's not clear to me that these things don't understand what kind of fear/anger people are feeling).
The problem with this is that Kyoufu's aura is different from Muhou's right from the start. Kyoufu's fear is overwhelming panic where Muhou's is more of a simmering rage. I'll find and edit this with the relevant quotes in a bit but from the start we were told to expect that Muhou's rage aura would be easier to redirect, but harder to shrug off entirely, an ever-present insidious influence compared to a crushing, foreign weight over our shoulders.

Edit: relevant quote
[] The anger seems less insidious than the fear, and easier to think through. Just focus on your goal; letting yourself feel the anger might make Muhou less antagonistic, as well.
I will note that while Muhou's aura is in many ways easier to work through than Kyoufu's (it promotes targeted anger, rather than unthinking rage) it's proportionally more difficult to disregard entirely.

With that in mind, I want to channel a clear, overwhelming fear, and I want to follow through with that by gtfo-ing asap. I'm not sure we can really channel the nebulous, distant fears of fighting witches or whatever compared to the pants-wetting fear we were subjected to less than an hour ago.

And then staying to make requests... I'm not actually against that in theory, I just wanted to follow through with selling our fear (about her fear) properly. I can add that part in, or maybe add it to the note? Actually yeah, note is better, otherwise it's just in case she wakes, which means it's a chance we don't tell her at all.

This bit is probably a value-add either for Maiko socialing Kyoufu, or for Maiko researching Kyoufu
Not sure if this part is necessary... Maiko has the Grimoire and was there when she talked. I'm sure she noticed most everything about her we did, but I guess it doesn't hurt to share it anyways. I'll add something similar to the brainstorming ideas section of my vote.

In case you're keeping score, that's 2 for 2 suggestions turned into changes to my plan. GJ.

For healing, I generally agree to the types of actions being discussed, but if we have the opportunity to heal visible injuries before going home we should take it.
This is where I break your record. The vote specifically says 'stay as long as you need to'. The backup about sleeping over at Asami's is there for a reason. Obviously, if the healing is easy and quick we can skip all the trouble right from the start, but all those 'what if' backup plans are there in case it isn't.

I guess I could reword my vote to make things more evident since this isn't the first criticism leveled at it, but I'm ultimately changing nothing but the wording here.

Edit: On second thought, go ahead and keep your perfect score, 4/4. The rewording was a significant change and you helped me optimise it. Great ideas all the way.

I think consoling Maiko is important. Like, I half-expect Yui to do something along those lines anyway, but I'm voting it. Maiko is wise and experienced, but she's stoic, and not actually half as put together as she manages to project. And I think the business with Muhou might have poked some wounds.
This however gets my full approval. Added as-is. Hell yes. First thing, top of the list.

I'll post my updated vote [a]here[/s] below. After finding quotes about the auras. Brb.

Edit: Darklight liked your post and not mine? What am I doing wrong?!? *Panics in Kyoufu*

Updated vote gets its own post, changes in red because that's my colour, fam. Updated healing section should satisfy everybody, Tomo note removed as it's now redundant. Thank Genial for the suggestions, lemme know if there's anything objectionable.

I might nitpick later, but seems close enough. In future (and I admit my own culpability) we should probably use smaller votes most of the time to keep the discussion more accessible, though. For myself I want to adopt a 200-word target, or thereabouts.
