I was going to suggest getting the dagger class, but this is better.

I want to train the bow or spear, I think, once we can afford one.

Get Dagger first. We have an Iron Dagger.
Money's too tight for a spear
too true. Though, we do have enough GP for a reinforce wooden spear in the guild store. Just saying. If we are going for the spear route, then its better than nothing, unless you want us to attempt crafting our own wooden spear in the forest.

Let's try out your way. Its a step in the right direction at least.

Well, even if we never primary the dagger having basic proficiency in a holdout weapon is usually a good idea at least. Not many weapons work when they're grappling you already.

Article:

Spear pros/cons: easy to learn. Works with our shield. Doesn't work with our planned fighting style of staying well behind our minions.

Bow pros/cons: less easy to learn. Doesn't work with our shield. Does work with our planned fighting style. We know a legendary adventurer who might give us tips. Ammunition costs if we lose or break our arrows.

Axe pros/cons: requires high strength. We already have one.

I'm leaning towards the bow but I'm undecided.

I like the idea of a dagger build, on it's own. Its novel and fitting for a scholarly type to have a penknife or something equally pretentious

I noticed some more grammar errors than usual this update, so I took it upon myself to correct them.

Shrugging, you stow the card away in a pocket of your robes before beginning your search for an inn for the night, the stars bright in the clear skies above.

All of them bring their own benefits to the table and should never be seen as the only tool usable by an aspiring Adventurer. When it comes to weaponry more often than not one should choose based on how comfortable they feel using it.

...

Swords. Commonly depicted as a knightly or kingly weapon that heavy armored warriors wield into to battle to cut down foes by the hundreds. As a weapon they are fairly simple to learn with the basic moves numbering two - thrust and slash. A sword is an excellent weapon for those with balanced physical abilities and has plenty of room for growth if trained correctly.

Gaalius Twin-Handed, renowned throughout the Kingdom for his ability to wield two blades like they were one.

Though, we do have enough GP for a reinforce wooden spear in the guild store. Just saying.
The reinforced wooden spear is a garbage waste of GP, it's only one step above what we could make ourselves by sharpening a long stick. We're about to leave the newb Rank after the Advancement Exam, which will give us access to the next tier of the Guild Store. If you really want to buy a spear, wait until then. (Unless we're willing to buy an Iron Spear from Gunnerson's Smithy, but that's one of the more expensive weapons at 5 Silver.)

Gunnerson's Smithy!
Weapons:
Iron Shortsword - 4 Silver, 50 Coppers
Iron Longsword - 9 Silver
Iron Greatsword - 15 Silver

Iron Dagger - 2 Silver, 50 Coppers
Iron Dirk - 4 Silver
Iron Throwing Knife - 1 Silver, 50 Coppers

Iron Short Spear - 2 Silver, 75 Coppers
Iron Spear - 5 Silver

Iron Hand-Axe - 3 Silver, 50 Coppers
Iron Throwing Axe - 2 Silver

Oak Shortbow - 3 Silver
Oak Longbow - 5 Silver
Iron Bodkin Arrows - 10 Coppers per Arrow
Iron Broadhead Arrows - 20 Coppers per Arrow

Shields:
Oaken Round Shield - 1 Silver, 15 Coppers
Iron Kite Shield - 2 Silver, 50 Coppers
Iron Tower Shield - 4 Silver, 50 Coppers

Armors:
Leather Armor - 3 Silver, 20 Coppers
Green-pelt Leather Armor - 7 Silver, 25 Coppers

Simple Iron Chainmail - 4 Silver, 45 Coppers

Iron Cuirass - 6 Silver, 40 Coppers
Full Iron Plate Armor - 12 Silver, 35 Coppers
I'm baffled as to why an Iron-headed spear is more expensive than a chain mail shirt.

Payment: 15 Coppers per pair of fangs, 7 GP per pair of fangs, 1 Rank Advancement Point for every four pair of fangs, 2 Experience per every pair of fangs
Description: Many farmers and travelers have reported the Green-pelt Wolf population have been restless in the forests nearby, this announcement has been posted to deal with the issue before it can get out of hand. All we need is the fangs for confirmation, the rest you may do with as you will.
Hmm, I wonder if we could get a significant discount on a set of Green-pelt Leather Armor if we bring the smithy enough of our own pelts to make it.

A lot of people seem to want to get into magic, which would give us a ranged option while still wielding a spear (or whatever) and shield (unless we need to use something like a staff to cast spells). While we don't know what the limitations of it are, and it probably has its own kind of "ammunition" to worry about, it probably wouldn't be a money issue like arrows would be. However, the reveal that a Legendary Archer is interested in us may prove to be a more overwhelming incentive than anything else...

Screw it, I'm fine with practicing Daggers for now just to get through the Exam, since it'll always be a useful backup no matter what, and we can continue debating our primary combat style later, especially after seeing what else is available at Porcelain. (Still wish some kind of blunt weapon was more viable beyond the club we made for proper pelt gathering but never actually used yet.)

We should probably try getting some field experience with the dagger as well after we take the class/train and also acquire some additional funds so as to better be equipped for the trial. That in mind either the Horned Rabbit Quest or Monstrous Corn Quest would probably be useful towards that goal Since we saw where the Rabbits were lurking last night and the Corn location will be revealed to us upon accepting the quest.

Or like I said, grab a reinforce wooden spear and get some actual combat experience with the vicious rabbits. a quick way to up our combat potential with the obvious risk of injury (and death).
It's recommended that Wood Rank Adventurers only fight groups of Vicious Rabbits with parties. The Monstrous Corn are supposed to be simple enough to fight, except for how they explode and shower their surroundings with mana-hardened kernels at the end. I'd like to take the Monstrous Corn quest after the MC learns Evasion and practices using the dagger a bit.

I'm leaning towards supporting the Bow/Dagger combination since it would fit the Tamer idea well

Though, the fact that a sword is seen as 'a weapon of kings' means that would work well with our path

I'll stick with this for now

Level: 2
Experience: 198/200 [23 Surplus Experience]

This seems like a mistake; we should still be Level 1 at the moment

I would prefer to use the sword as our main weapon. We have the Those Who Seek The Crown title and the sword is supposed to be a kingly weapon. We should be easily capable of wielding a short sword, even if our strength is a bit low.

Looking at prices, it's 5-7 silver for a good beginner weapon. I suppose we save up for one and then vote on which to buy?

We could make a practice spear or sword out of found wood from the forest, using our axe and dagger. I don't think we could make a practice bow, though.

From a few minutes of quick searching, making a bow in our conditions would probably be possible however, I think it would take a fair amount of time dedicated specifically to crafting skills as well as finding or buying the right kind of material.

If we use Dominate Writing on a [craft bow] bow book then we could probably manage it in a few days but it's also a question of what else could we be doing in that timeframe

That's an... interesting question. Do we want any crafting skills? I'm inclined to say no, outside of basic survival skills. We already have more than enough areas to advance without adding even more.

We might want a few but I figured as far as crafting goes we've got writing and that's a major skill on it's own, especially once we start increasing the skill modifier to let us start pulling shenanigans like work-Arounds to needing the materials and whatnot.
So I'm in favor of not trying to learn crafting...Although, if we were to invent the printing press that might prove to be a game-changer, if I understand how this world manages it's high-tech weirdness.
Basically, these nations haven't industrialized, and for probably good reason- unlike our world magic allows for a much higher skill ceiling/ allows quality to scale harder then it does in our world, and in turn that makes a single awesome wizard massively useful versus a hundred mage adepts.

Well, if Dagger training works well like this, we can probably try this same manner of training again when we get better weapons. No need to specialize in Daggers so soon when we can use Daggers as a low-level adventurer, and then train with more useful weapons later once we've ranked-up as an Adventurer for more access to materials, and gotten the money and physical training to use such weapons effectively.

Well we have precedent for more than one Legendary Warrior also finding the time to become masters of some kind of crafting skill on the side, almost like a hobby:
Hildegard the Firebranded, whose blade is always clad in fire. Known for singlehandedly defeating trolls, and their contributions in the defense of Keep Cathru against a Goblin Horde. A rumored bastard daughter of the Royal Family of Eldast said to be a master chef as well.

Hope, an Elven Warrior of the Lineage of the Lost. Mysterious, elusive, and an incredible master of both the spear and javelin throwing. It is said a single strike of her spear rends the earth apart and foes even a mile away are exposed to her javelins. It is also known that she is a master brewer, making beer that matches even the Dwarves.

Since I don't know if we're really going to dedicate ourselves to becoming Legendary at a weapon skill (as opposed to whatever level is required to get by at our current circumstances), that leaves other areas of focus available. We seem to be leaning towards this general path,
[] Scholarly Determination [3] - You have embraced the path of a scholar even as you walk that of an Adventurer. It is a hard path to walk, but you seek to follow both to the very end. You are bound more tightly by your Scholarly Code, but are also driven to greater heights by it.
And one of the advantages of being a dedicated Scholar is "learning everything", so it kind of serves as a gateway/cheat sheet to a lot of other skills (just look at how an hour or two of basic research into a subject gets us halfway to Beginner level in the skill, and that's ignoring Dominate Writing shenanigans). This can include crafting, though from the looks of it you can still only focus on a couple of things (cooking vs brewing vs smithing, etc.) before you become a jack of all trades, master of none, which isn't recommended based on what we first learned from the Forbidden Scroll.

Hmm, I wonder if we could get a significant discount on a set of Green-pelt Leather Armor if we bring the smithy enough of our own pelts to make it.

We already have skinning knowledge, why not go all the way and learn how to make our own armor with the pelts we collect?

Oh, you know what I'd like to try? Paper-making. Fancy paper of adventuring doom. Bookbinding, maybe. Extreme bookbinding.

That does actually tie back to the leatherworking idea.

Could we use dominate text on an entire book? What about on something fictional? Or something we wrote without copying from elsewhere?

This brings up a lot of questions that might have fun answers so I'm down
