Gained 2 Health.
Gained Cannibalize Ability due to influence from Experience sources.
Gained Soul Linked Trait

You vaguely feel some changes from the rabbit now rubbing its head against your leg affectionately, but push it aside for later.

"What are the consequences if I take the exam and fail exactly?"

The receptionist nods her head as she replies,

"Of course you would want to know. Failing the Exam will halve your current Advancement Points as that would reveal you have need of more experience in the field. Of course, if you fail to pass an Advancement Exam three times then you will lose all ability to advance your rank in the Guild.

The number of attempts is of course reset each rank, so I wouldn't be too worried about it. Besides, you've done well so far, I expect the Exam would be rather simple for you!"

You process that and let out a short sigh before shaking your head,

"I'll hold off on taking the Exam for now then. Thanks for your help."

With that you turn and head to the Guild's medical ward, might as well get this checkup over with after all. You enter to find Valencia stooped over a rather obviously infatuated Adventurer whose arms have been practically torn apart. His torso is caved in, and his face a mangled mess yet he still looks at her with a smile.

Golden light that reminds you of the sun radiates from her and that fascinating voice echoes throughout the room.

"From that which saw the Dawn gracing its birth, from the Tree that grows upon the horizon itself I draw strength. May it's boundless strength restore your body to what it once was. Let there be [Life in the Dawn]."

Suddenly the light shifts and turns brighter, so bright that you should be blinded and yet somehow you witness it. Behind Valencia a withered tree forms, it's branches broken and it's trunk riddled with holes. Immediately you know that you've witnessed something you were not meant to, as if your soul was screaming at you to look away.

Yet, you can't. Knowledge was the heart of your existence and this was knowledge that few had ever witnessed. Oddly that instinctual terror fades as some of the golden light envelops you, safety and comfort filling your mind. You feel something looking at you, you feel the alien nature of it and yet find comfort in it despite the intense sadness it holds.

Suddenly you are overcome with exhaustion, your eyes beginning to close no matter how hard you fight it. You feel fear from your companion and try your best to comfort it even as sleep takes you...

---

Once again you find yourself in that lifeless void within which the flame remains, it's existence sputtering as the golden crown drifts drunkenly around it. Despite your location in the void you feel the origin of your heroic spirit once more observing you.

"Truly, such a foolish child. You are lucky that It is not a hostile existence."

What do you do?

Of course, if you fail to pass an Advancement Exam then you will lose all ability to advance your rank in the Guild.
I think there's a word missing here about how many times we can fail the Advancement Exam before being unable to ever advance.
Once again you find yourself in that lifeless void within which the flame remains, it's existence sputtering as the golden brown drifts drunkenly around it.
I'm guessing it should be "crown" instead of "brown".

Of the given options, I'd prefer to ask why the MC is there, in hopes of figuring out how to prevent this from happening in the future. For now, I'm going to wait to vote in case someone comes up with a good write-in.

Huh, if Dawn Elves are the only ones who can beseech their tree, maybe they're the only magical healers? It looks like their enchanting aura can be used in place of anesthesia, but I'm still worried about people becoming obsessed and getting hurt on purpose.

Also, the tree looks really bad. Is this the result of its strength being used to heal too many people? It's ironic that the healer refers to "it's boundless strength" when the tree is in such bad condition.

[] Ask why you are here.
Admittedly...That was unintentional at least on the voter's part. Forbidden Scholar just keeps throwing new shinies at us!

But this tree being in dire straits made me want to review what we know of this Valencia and her interactions with us.
From what I can tell: She used the Will of the Dawn Tree to see if we were lying, and succeeded, showing that power to be greater then our soul's might. Then she tried to push it a notch further, to get us to give donations. That's when They Who Seek the Crown kicked in and blocked her, and rebuked us for falling under her sway.
Forbidden Scholar just showed us what appears to be the Dawn Tree, and it's in pretty bad shape. Given the Flame's words about it not being hostile, I suspect that what Forbidden Scholar showed us was the full, undiluted Dawn Tree, versus what Valencia called upon earlier, and that let the Dawn Tree look into us. And had the Dawn Tree been hostile, we could have lost They Who Seek the Crown for submitting to a greater power, if not straight up ended up becoming enthralled to the Dawn Tree.

...Now, our poor history of interactions aside, I'm wondering if the Dawn Tree is in need of assistance-The Elves of the Dawn Tree Lineage do seem allied with the Guild, who are in turn allied with the rest of the 'good guys' that is the Three races, and their loss would leave the three weaker, so if we can help them out that does seem prudent.

It's okay if we're injured. We can just eat human flesh to heal now!
That's our Vicious Rabbit's ability, and we'd need to set aside rabbit meat for her if we want her to heal up from it. Soul Linked is from feeding her XP, and is the power to do precisely that. We might be able to upgrade that power into a link that's beneficial for both sides, but given the nature of our powers I half-expect it to turn into something more like powering us up, or the ability to extract XP from our victims...We shall see, I imagine that's down to how we build upon/augment our abilities going forward.

[X] Ask why you are here.

If someone comes up with a good write-in, then I'll probably change my vote. I want to know what happened and how to prevent it in the future, but I don't know if it would be cheating to put two questions in one write-in.

Also, I'm still rereading the quest, and I came across the section about the censors who sealed the forbidden scroll. They're called the Cult of the Burning Sword. Meanwhile, the God of Death's paladins are referred to as the Knights of Silence. The Cult of the Burning Sword is probably associated with the God of War since the scroll was in the temple for that God. We might want to be on the look out for a group associated with the God of Knowledge as well.

Edit: Apparently, the Cult of the Burning Sword is the militant arm of the Church for the God of War. I guess the Knights of Silence is the equivalent for the Church of the God of Death.

Your residents that and you let out a short sigh before shaking your head,

Thanks, I've corrected those. Still getting used to this tablet, it's autocorrect is a little over zealous at times.

I found another reason to stay at a lower rank for now, though it's not likely an Emergency Quest applying to Porcelain rank and up would occur in the next week or so.
In the case of a crisis that could lead to large scale damage in a region such as the uprising of a beast horde, sudden invasion of those fucking Savage Elves, or similar instance will result in an Emergency Quest. When one of those arrives then the Adventurers' Guild in a region is guaranteed to take a massive hit for they are bound by Royal law to order all Adventurers (with the base rank determined by the crisis) to take action, those who refuse will be kicked out and charged with treason. Countless accounts have been recorded of such high-level crises that even Wood Rank Adventurers were forced to enter the field resulting in tens of thousands of casualties.
I really want the MC to learn how to fight soon. I'm not sure about the effects of using Dominate Writing while having an injured soul, or I'd suggest using it to learn how to wield the hand-axe. Maybe if the MC takes it easy for a day, he'd recover faster? Just downgrading the Severe Headache (-5 to all rolls) would help a lot.

[X] Write-In
-[X] Ask if the Dawn Tree is sick.

Simple and should open up dialogue for a quest or unlock. Forbidden knowledge eyes are the best magic, ftr

[X] Write-In
-[X] Ask if the Dawn Tree is sick.

Yeah, we should probably pull on the obvious quest hook, and while asking why we're here might accomplish that too (because the Dawn Tree's the reason we're here), this line of questioning is more proactive.

I'm still slowly rereading my way through this quest, and I found some interesting sections.
'Why in the name of the Gods is it this lady AGAIN!? Either this a series of coincidences for the century, or this lady is just a creepy stalker. No, you know what? I'm just going to ignore it, don't give her attention and it won't escalate... maybe.'

After pausing for what was probably too long in the doorway you head towards the counter, concerned that no one else is actually here even though it honestly makes sense given few people are willing to work at night. You barely reach the counter before she extends her hand towards you, her charming voice filling your ears as you desperately try not to think about the possibly creepy lady.

"Excellent work Mr. Stitch, we have already received confirmation of your work from the requester as well as his wish to increase your monetary reward. In total that will mean your final payment is two silvers, fifty guild points, and another point to your rank advancement. If you will give me a moment to add that onto your card please."
Two things here - First, I think there are multiple lines for receptionists, and yet the MC always gets the same one. I know it's been mentioned that she's always there, no matter what time it is, but I think she might be EVERY receptionist as well. I wonder if the MC would still get the same receptionist if he went to a guild hall in a different town.

Second, I suspect that we should be trying to unravel the tech/magic at work somehow, just because of how incongruous some of it is. The MC came to the guild right after finishing his job. Yet the requester managed to communicate with the guild that the job was complete AND increase the reward before he got there. This isn't the first time it happened either.

I also found it a bit strange that the MC used a mechanical quill and filled it with ink at one point. What makes a quill a mechanical one? I don't think the quill came from the guild, and that seems to be the main source of wonders so far. I've gotten a general impression of a low-tech world outside of the guild and possibly the noble areas, but it's probably more complicated than that.
Reading those words seems to trigger something in the memories left in your own mind as you suddenly come to understand a few simple rules.

  1. A Heroic Spirit's vessel must forever strive towards greater heights, a Hero is never created from nothing.
While I still think we were right to skip the Advancement Exam, considering the penalties the MC is currently under, it sounds like it might be breaking the rules to refuse to try it once the MC is better. I wasn't in any hurry to try to advance with how much the MC still has to learn, but I think we'll need to get as much done as we can before the MC is recovered and then go for it.

Sorry for the double-post, but it's been over 3 hours with no one else posting.

The tech disparity just keeps getting weirder. Town guards have a grey box that can read the Guild card, communicate with the Lord's Office to charge the card and approve a license, and then issue a metal plate that counts as a license. Meanwhile, the temple uses candles, and the MC uses inkpots.

I'm guessing that the requesters have a box that allows them to let the Guild know that the request has been fulfilled and whether to increase the reward, but the innkeeper only wanted a one-time job so why would he have the box? Unless the box isn't tied to the Guild, and every business has one?

However, before you can really enjoy the sensation a vaguely recognizable voice echoes in the room with no noticeable source.

"Copying the books in this section is permissible, your use of those copies is entirely up to you as well, but be warned. Use that power on one of the books kept here and you will be immediately expelled from the Guild."
Ok, I'm about convinced that the receptionist is actually the Guild hall's AI. I'm not sure who else the MC has met that this could be.

A moment after your card is slotted in a small window appears in front of you asking whether you're here to spar, practice, or partake in one of your purchased courses.
It looks like we can choose to practice Evasion on our own instead of having to spar with someone. Once the penalty to the MC's rolls isn't so bad, he can use Dominate Writing to learn how to use the hand-axe or shield and then practice with it and Evasion.

"Horrific work, you made the right choice to ignore flashy moves and focus on avoiding any hits possible, but you started out on a bad foot. Maintain mobility if at all possible, going to the ground should be a last resort. Also, your physique? Horrendous. Take some time to train. Low stamina will kill you faster than a knife.
I had forgotten about this, but the MC should be training to get in shape. We just have a lot to do already with all of our questions and the MC's need to earn money to support himself. Maybe training Evasion will help?

I wonder if there's a standard sort of schedule people take, like six days of work and one day off, or twenty nine days of work and one day off.

Maybe we could start a pattern of training in the morning and working in the afternoon or something?

Maybe we could take the morning off. Shocking idea, I know. A half day of work is still working, right?

While rereading the quest, I found a couple of mentions that part of the appeal of being an adventurer is that adventurers decide their own schedule. However, if they go a month without taking a job, they drop a rank unless they previously applied for special leave.

I think we're pretty much stuck taking the whole day off right now. The severe headache gives the MC -5 on all rolls, and then there are more penalties on top of that. Unless the healing tree fixes everything?

If it doesn't fix everything, then I suggest we research in the library about Elves and monster taming. If we manage to catch the receptionist when there isn't a line, then I'd like to ask the following questions as well:

1) Does the guild have any form of lodging or discount on lodging available for its members?
2) Why does the MC always deal with her, no matter what time he goes to the Guild or which line he joins?
3) How do requesters communicate with the guild that the request has been fulfilled?

If the MC does end up healed, then I suggest we use Dominate Writing to learn how to use a hand-axe and then practice using it and Evasion. We can also see if the class on Stealth is available today. I think it might be ok to delay taking the Advancement Exam as long as the MC is specifically training for the exam. If he's delaying because he doesn't care about advancing, then there's going to be a problem.

Sorry for double-posting, but it's been nearly a day without anyone else posting.
Identification. Most people will live their entire lives without knowing what exactly it is, but understanding that high class Identifiers can receive stipends that would bankrupt small towns and receive recognition on par with some of the top Noble Houses. Identification is a facet of the System we all have, but rather than an automatic aid it is more akin to a form of magic utilizing the System. As most know the System is a creation of the Three Saviors who severed much of their connection to the mortal realm in order to grant the Free Realm the power to resist against the Demonic Incursion.
I'm wondering what exactly they did. Are the Heroic Spirits actually the remnants of the Three Saviors? It's been stated that people possess a Heroic Spirit or are possessed by them. Maybe the voice talking to the MC in the latest chapter is actually the "ghost" of one of the Saviors?
You close the cover of the second book as a hand goes to rub your temples, your head hurting at the sheer oddity of this weird power called Identification. You of course know about the System, it is a gift from the Gods that lets one observe their own growth and more efficiently strengthen themselves as they grow in a manner that doesn't conflict with the Laws of the world. Of course, the reason your head hurts isn't the information about the System, but rather the potentially hidden features within if Identification also stems from it.
I can't find it right now, but I think I read something about how people can learn a skill to see their stats. Considering the Domination ability, maybe one of the stats is Will? If we manage to keep the crown after being affected by the healing tree, then we might want to figure out how to increase it so the MC isn't affected so frequently by various entities.

Also, if we lose the crown, do we lose our minion as well?
'Many Adventurers will fail to notice, or discovery some of the most fascinating and useful aspects of the Guild Card we were given when we enrolled even well into past Iron Rank. Of course, I am only here to describe one aspect of the Card in particular, the Guild Trade Adviser. Simply put if an Adventurer holds their Card in hand and says "Trade Menu" an interface similar to the Guild Stores and many other facilities will appear in front of them.

This menu plays host to two very important functions. The first of them is the Market Value Listings which shows the current market values of a variety of items, materials, herbs, and the like for your region (if a Town Level Guild is functioning there) allowing you to get an accurate judgement of the pricing in your area.

Second, and perhaps most important, is the Guild Trade Hall menu where Adventurers can put items, materials, and more up for sale and other members of the Guild can then purchase them. Any purchases will be shipped to the nearest Guild Hall from where you order the item, and any sells will require you to give the item to the Guild until it is sold or your listing runs out.
This is a neat aspect of the Guild card that I had forgotten about. If we ever do the Vicious Rabbits quest, then this might be useful for selling the furs and whatever meat we don't feed our minion.
