Somebody Else [Pokémon]

[x] You almost can't believe it. "Really..?"

Would be nice to have someone watch our back. We're not done for if we break a leg, we can sleep longer and keep watch in shifts, we can bring more provisions with us, since you don't need two of some things. Some obstacles are way easier to get past with two people, we have double the firepower and keep twice as many pokemon sane.

Disadvantages are double food consumption, so we couldn't stay in one place quite as long, our profits are split two ways and we might not get along at all without some distance. (there's nowhere to actually take a break from each other, because "it's dangerous to go alone").

A new pokequest! This ought to be fun. \o/

[x] You almost can't believe it. "Really..?"

I'm leaning towards this for the same reason as DeepWaters. I wanna see them set out together, for better or worse. ^_^
You could have been born Pokémon. As a simple Bulbasaur tending the fields. Or as one of the Pikachu engineers. You could have even been born a Charmander and become a chef. Anything else but a Human, fated to throw your life away as a Trainer.
Alright. We're 900 words into this quest, and we haven't yet had the option of recruiting an engineer!Pikachu or a chef!Charmander to our team. I'll soon have to begin rioting. :mob:

Thinking tactically/strategically, my chief question is this: "Would the increased force concentration derived from bringing an extra two combatants make up for the fact that those combatants are relatively weak and untrained?"

@wdango am I correct in my interpretation that these two are close to the town's last combatants/pseudocombatants, and that leaf is our only backup for the immediate future?

If so, I am inclined to accept Leaf. Even with her relative weakness, splitting the burden of constant vigilance in a dangerous environment four ways instead of two seems far easier.

Furthermore, I'd recommend suggesting that she Pact with a ranged/support mon, allowing greater utility per unit power.

Tentatively:

there are other Towns and Cities, most of which are bigger than Pallet and have more Trainers. It's rare for too many parties to travel together, though, because larger group = higher visibility and slower travelling speed. Plus, you'll be dividing whatever spoils you manage to acquire.

Non-Pacted Pokémon can fight but they're typically unevolved, and they can't go into the Miasma for too long or they turn Wild. This can take anywhere from seconds to hours, depending on the individual Pokémon's resistance.

Gramps, Sis, and Auntie Delia are all Humans and obviously Trainers, but they can't leave Pallet because reasons.

So, no-one in our community can realistically reinforce us, and getting any sort of reinforcements from another community will cost us to the tune of half the spoils, if we can get them at all.

Combined, they mean that if we want to work with anyone other than a single Pacted Pokemon for the foreseeable future, she is our only option.

This does push the needle a bit further towards taking her with us, to me.

I will admit that this seems inspired by the Pokegirl setting.

Also, the Pokemon are screwing up their human management techniques if population is this low.

In a good way, I hope. :p

Admittedly, if the number and quality of pokemon that can accompany any given human without going buts and becoming part of the deathworld is strongly limited, adequate Human Management would be quite hard.

You almost can't believe it. "Really..?"

"Yeah." She smiles weakly. "Really. I've been thinking about it for a long time."

You almost don't believe her, but... "Do the others know?"

She nods. "I just told Gramps earlier this week... I'm planning to tell Mom after the Pact."

Well. You... You don't know what to think, to be honest.

Leaving early... It hasn't been done in years, and the last one to do it had been her Dad, which didn't exactly turn out well... but there's precedent. And although it'll be risky, two Trainers means you'll be starting with two Pokémon instead of just one.

And truth be told, there's nothing that would comfort you more.

With her by your side, and you by hers... Together, the two of you might just be able to make it through this.

"...Gary?"

You look at her, not knowing what to say.

"..."

"It's okay, love." She recaptures you in her embrace. "We're gonna be okay."

Her arms and her chest are shaking, like she doesn't quite believe it.

But it's enough.

Three years of training have brought you to the point that's generally accepted as more than good enough to survive in the Wilderness. Or at least, in the less dangerous areas that are not too far from known Everstones.

In fact, you have it on good authority that you're skilled well beyond most rookie Trainers.

You just hope that your skills are enough to carry... both you and Leaf through the ordeals that you'll no doubt be facing.

Choose 2 (two) Skills that Gary is more proficient at.

[x] Gary's Body
your physical capabilities, affecting things such as travelling speed, stamina, amount of weight you can carry, ability to function on less sleep, etc.
Rank D : Average speed of 5km/h. 2 Stamina Points. 10 Inventory Slots.
Rank C : Average speed of 6km/h. 3 Stamina Points. 12 Inventory Slots.

[x] Gary's Domain
your metaphysical dominion, affecting its maximum radius, ability to strengthen your Pokémon, and the number of Pacts it can sustain.
Rank E : Radius of 500m. 2 Attribute Points. 1 Pact.
Rank D : Radius of 600m. 4 Attribute Points. 2 Pacts.

[x] Gary's Hunting
your understanding of Wild Pokémon and their behaviour, allowing you to track down a specific Pokémon or to avoid Wild Pokémon.
Rank D : Correction of 20% can be applied to Encounter Rolls.
Rank C : Correction of 30% can be applied to Encounter Rolls.

[x] Gary's Survival
your understanding of terrain and how to use it, increasing your navigation options, ability to survive outside of a settlement, and locate better veins of Stone.
Rank D : Reduces movement penalty by 10%. Camps are 25% safer.
Rank C : Reduces movement penalty by 15%. Camps are 50% safer.

[x] Gary's First-Aid
your ability to administer immediate medical help, increasing the effectiveness of medicines, speed of recovery, as well as reducing the risk of long-term injury.
Rank E : Medicines can be used.
Rank D : Medicines are 25% more effective.

▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄

You're glad that you'll be Trainers together, despite the fact that she's not quite ready yet. Leaf hasn't completed her training, so she is likely to slow you down... and you know for a fact that her Domain is definitely too weak to Pact with one of the stronger Pokémon.

But against all odds... Perhaps no, you'll definitely be able to make it.

You know it.

You know you'll be able to make it.

...Definitely.

[x] Leaf's Domain LOCKED
your metaphysical dominion, affecting its maximum radius, ability to strengthen your Pokémon, and the number of Pacts it can sustain.
Rank E : Radius of 500m. 2 Attribute Points. 1 Pact.
Rank E- : Radius of 400m. 1 Pact.

Choose 1 (one) additional Skill that Leaf hasn't completed her training on.

[x] Leaf's Body
your physical capabilities, affecting things such as travelling speed, stamina, amount of weight you can carry, ability to function on less sleep, etc.
Rank D : Average speed of 5km/h. 2 Stamina Points. 10 Inventory Slots.

Rank E : Average speed of 4km/h. 1 Stamina Point. 8 Inventory Slots.

[x] Leaf's Hunting
your understanding of Wild Pokémon and their behaviour, allowing you to track down a specific Pokémon or to avoid Wild Pokémon.
Rank D : Correction of 20% can be applied to Encounter Rolls.

Rank E : Correction of 10% can be applied to Encounter Rolls.

[x] Leaf's Survival
your understanding of terrain and how to use it, increasing your navigation options, ability to survive outside of a settlement, and locate better veins of Stone.
Rank D : Reduces movement penalty by 10%. Camps are 25% safer.

Rank E : Reduces movement penalty by 5%.

[x] Leaf's First-Aid
your ability to administer immediate medical help, increasing the effectiveness of medicines, speed of recovery, as well as reducing the risk of long-term injury.
Rank E : Medicines can be used.

Rank X : Cannot use Medicines.

Hunting seems to be the safest deficiency for Leaf. Moving slower is super bad. Inability to use medicine is super bad. That leaves hunting, or survival but avoiding bad terrain and making Gary choose/set up all the camps.

[x] Gary's Hunting
[x] Gary's Survival
[x] Leaf's Body

Not really thinking about what's safest so much as what will make these two into the biggest nerds. And that's two knowledge skills for Gary and Leaf's only weak point being a lack of exercise. She has semi-plot armor in that I will drop the quest if she dies, so it's fine.

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha.

You are not familiar with wdango quests.

But maybe I should activate wdango's Classroom for this quest.

...Or should I make it Oak's Classroom?

Alright, analysis time.

Body certainly seems nice, but I think that it's less of a priority right now. We can't really exploit the increased average speed due to traveling with Leaf, and between us and Leaf, we've already got at least 18 inventory slots, possibly 20, so the extra 2 inventory slots isn't worth that much. The increased stamina points would probably be the major takeaway for us right now, but overall, I don't think this option is that strong.

Domain, though... Well. I assume that attribute points are spread across all Pokémon a trainer has, rather than being the number of attribute points available to each Pokémon, but even so, this is an extra Pokémon. I... don't really see any reason to not pick this. Safety in numbers was part of why we're taking along Leaf, so let's double down on that and add another Pokémon to our party.

Hunting seems... eeh, I don't know. I wouldn't say that it's bad, but there simply isn't enough information to really judge how good it is. It does seem like a "nice to have" rather than a "need to have", though, but we should definitely aim to have either Gary or Leaf be good at this at some point.

The reduced movement speed penalty on Survival seems - like with Body - a bit useless right now, due to us being limited by Leaf's movement speed. However, increased safety in camps could definitely be useful, as well as the other things the stat is mentioned to dictate.

First-Aid... yeah, we're going to want this. This seems to be the "how long can we keep our party in fighting shape, and how quickly can we get back to it".

All in all, I think that Domain is an obvious question, with my second choice being torn between Survival and First-Aid - the latter because camps being safer seems like a pretty damn good thing - but I'll ultimately go with First-Aid, because our Pokémon will probably get hurt no matter what, so the quicker we can get our team back on their feet again, the better.

For Leaf, I'd say that Body is definitely out as traveling speed isn't something I'd ever want to go down on if I had the choice. Being unable to use medicine could be pretty damn bad, so that's out as well.

That leaves Hunting and Survival. Ultimately, I think that Survival is more crucial than Hunting at this stage, so I'll go with down-ranking her Hunting.

[x] Gary's Domain
[x] Gary's First-Aid
[x] Leaf's Hunting

Edit:
Oh, and I found this bit adorable.

So Gary needs Domain proficiency to compensate against Leaf, and another skill which Leaf should have less skill at.

This makes sense.

[x] Gary's First-Aid
[x] Leaf's Hunting

Attribute Points upgrade your Domain.

Pokémon have 3 Stats: Power, Magic, and Speed.

AP can be assigned to your Domain to give a bonus to all Pacted Pokémon.

For example, a Charmander with 6/7/8, if pacted to a Trainer with a D-Rank Domain with AP assigned to 2/2/0, will have 8/9/8.

The upgrade applies to ALL Pacted Pokémon, as a global effect, in addition to whatever specific bonus is given by your Domain, if you restrict it to certain types of Pokémon.

Example of what Hunting does:

Let's say you roll a d100 for Encounter, with a relatively dangerous zone where <=50 is encounter, <=20 is boss encounter, and <=5 is a legendary encounter.

If you have a 50% correction, rolling a 40 allows you to pick whether you want to transform your normal encounter (40=encounter) to a boss encounter (-50%=20) or to avoid the encounter altogether (+50%=60).
