Raising a Monster

Math's Done! Check it and let me know if I forgot anything!

Ghaiogrilb loses 20 Stability due to Eternal Hunger!

Howard:
24 + 20 (Tranquil) + 25 (Zen) + 10 (DODGE!) + 49 (Ana) = 128

Weston: 29 + 10 (Military) + 40 (Annihilator) + 15 (Modern Wep) + 50 (Gaze) – 45 (Tendrils) + 20 (Distract) = 119

Olly: 28 – 10 (Lamia) + 20 (Claws) + 50 (Gaze) – 45 (Tendrils) + 20 (Distract) = 63

Ghaiogrilb (Feed): 22 + 50 (Feed) + 30 (Eldritch) + 45 (Tendrils) – 40 (Amulet) + 15 (Distract) = 122

Ghaiogrilb (Gaze): 41 + 50 (Gaze) + 30 (Eldritch) – 40 (Amulet) = 81

Expect the next update either by next Tuesday or Thursday.

The Battle Pt. 3
Ghaiogrilb loses 20 Stability due to Eternal Hunger!

Two quick glances at Weston and Olly are enough to convey your idea to them. Feet already pounding across the sand long before getting confirmation that either understand, you see the creature attempt to catch you between two tendrils and smash you.

It is, once again, a very close call.

You only spot one chance to escape from its clutches and it requires you running straight up the side of a wall. Under normal circumstances, you would shake your head and laugh at yourself for thinking that you could pull something like that off.

These are not normal circumstances.

Not wasting a moment, you turn on a heal and rush at the wall behind you. You place one foot on the wall just as the second tendril finishes hitting the ground. You lose balance and almost fall with your second foot barely off the ground. Correction would require the twisting of an ankle which would significantly reduce your combat effectiveness.

Thankfully, you've got a little someone watching over you.

You feel the tiniest push against your ankle and that's all you need. Swiftly, you get as high on the wall as you can manage. Then, when you can't go any higher, you push off and flip to give yourself just a few more seconds in the air.

It saves your life.

The tendrils slam together and blast a gust of air at your back. The wall you were running on crumbles as the mouths begin to devour the bricks and mortar. Stone is grinded to paste and falls into the voids that are the maws.

But not fast enough to prevent you from landing on a single piece of rumble still being eaten by a mouth.

You jump clear right as the mouth slams shut. You get to your feet after a quick roll, turning your gaze to the monster in the center of the room. The two tendrils quickly retract to join with the others to form a defensive line around itself.

Weston: 29 + 10 (Military) + 40 (Annihilator) + 15 (Modern Wep) + 50 (Gaze) – 45 (Tendrils) + 20 (Distract) = 119

It is at the last moment that Weston comes charging in.

The creature tries to make last second corrections to block the rushing mad man from getting too close, but all its efforts were focused on stopping you. Its tendrils, usually fast enough to knock a normal mortal away before they notice it has moved, are too preoccupied to block Weston as he jumps and places the barrel of his weapon in the creature's face.

Ghaiogrilb (Gaze): 41 + 50 (Gaze) + 30 (Eldritch) – 40 (Amulet) = 81

As he does, the Eldritch's head swivels to face directly at the military man. You smell something acrid in the air, the same stench from when it blew apart the wall behind you. Your eyes are riveted to the scene as it prepares to do the same to Weston.

The human smacks its face away with the barrel of his gun.

Just as a large hole is blasted into the sand by his feet, Weston fires point blank into the monster's gut. This time it has no way to mitigate the damage from the multitudes of pellets that pierce its hide. You see bits of its flesh come undone and flop to the ground, smoke rising from the sand. The amulet glows, chains erupt from the center, wrap the flesh up, and burn it away. They retract back into the bauble as the monster starts turning its head back towards Weston.

(Ghaiogrilb: Loses 35 Hunger and 50 Stability from Weston's attack)

Weston waste no time backing off before the beast can retaliate. Its tendrils undulate and lash out after him…giving Olly the opening she needs. She might not be built for combat…

Olly: 28 – 10 (Lamia) + 20 (Claws) + 50 (Gaze) – 45 (Tendrils) + 20 (Distract) = 63

…But that doesn't mean she can't be effective.

Her shadow falls over the Eldritch as she rears up behind it. Her claws sink into some of the holes made by Weston's shotgun. With wet squelching sounds she rips and tears at the monster's innards, doing everything she can to avoid the mouths that continually try and devour her body.

(Ghaiogrilb: Loses 5 Hunger and 15 Stability from attack)

Before she can do any real damage, the monster arches its back. With strength bellied by its physical body, it tosses Olly clear across the arena. You watch her fly until she smacks into the wall near Weston. The principal lifts her up and she nods that she's alright. But you know better.

Even from where you're standing, you can see her favoring the right side of her body while wincing when her lower half moves in certain ways. Something in her left side must've been knocked out of place. Not broken, otherwise she'd still be on the ground writhing in pain.

(Olly: Loses 30 Health, will not take -5 Penalties to Combat Rolls)

You look towards the Eldritch and see it…shaking? You feel that lock in the back of your head again, but it's worse now. Instead of the dull sound of a key going into a the lock on a door, it's the loud scraping of an worn out old safe being locked by an excessively long code word. You can tell something's coming. Something bad.

You look back at your allies. Olly feels the same thing, as she starts to slither away from the monster in the center of the room. On the other hand, Weston is staying where he is, shotgun in hand ready to fire. He stares at the creature with a single-minded determination that makes him blind to what's coming.

Current Situation:

You: Farthest away. The tendrils have stopped. You've got a bad feeling. Health: 95/100; Belief: Active; Actions: 1

Weston: To your left with Olly. Medium distance from creature. Looking to end it. Health: 185/200; Belief: Inactive; Actions: 1

Olly: To your left with Weston. Medium distance from creature. Injured left side (-5 Penalty). Backing away from incoming event. Health: 110/150; Actions: 1

Ghaiogrilb: Hurting, Hungry, Angry, Hungry, Hungry, Hungry, Hungry. Stability: 395/1.500; Hunger: -5/100; Actions: 1 (1 Locked Due to Eternal Hunger)

Ghaiogrilb is incurring Eternal Hungry Penalties: Loss of 1 Action, -45 to all rolls, will lose 100 Stability at the start of next update.

What is your plan?

[] Regroup with Weston. Together, you should be able to deal some damage. (Add your roll to Weston's)

[] Regroup with Olly. She'll need your support for this. (Add your roll to Olly's)

[] Go it alone. Your Belief is going. You should be able to damage it on your own. (Solo)
  • [] Your Plan?

[] Avoid it. You need to conserve your strength and see what it does. (+15 to your roll next turn)

[] Create a distraction. It seemed angry at you. You should be able to get its attention. (+15 to Ghaiogrilb's roll against you, but +20 to Allies' attack rolls)

[] Find a place to hide. You need to hide yourself and attack when you have a chance. (If successful, +1 Action for next Turn and +15 to next Attack)

[] Write in….

Edit: Can't believe I forgot to add in the choices.

If the tendrils not moving means it's not using them as defense anymore and it taking -45 to all rolls from hunger, that means any action we take against it is operating at effectively +90 compared to last turn, which is a massive, massive differential.
If we all go in and attack, the numbers in our favor might allow some Critical Success cascade where the thing just dies. Problem is, I can't visualize how we deal 295 points of stability damage even with crits, when a shotgun blast to the gut could only do 50. And If we don't kill it right away, then we're stuck at ground zero of something we know is bad. Not sure we should take the risk, but I'm also super worried about just letting it do said bad thing, which probably involves eating reality in a 30ft radius or some shit and healing up.

An excellent chapter.

Poor Olly, getting smacked around.

Take out its Stability or let Eternal Hunger kill it for you.

Right now, the second one is the most likely thing going to happen.

Probably still a good idea to perform at least a couple more attacks on it so as to expedite the process.

Also, here's my vote:

[X] Regroup with Weston. Together, you should be able to deal some damage. (Add your roll to Weston's)
[X] Create a distraction. It seemed angry at you. You should be able to get its attention. (+15 to Ghaiogrilb's roll against you, but +20 to Allies' attack rolls)

Then we distract it the best we can until WE kill it, or it eats itself.

And pray to both/either any/all Gods/Godesses/Saints/Angels/Whatever-the-heck there is out there that has a sphere of influence in Explosives/Explosions and/or Anastasia (though she probably won't like it much if we do so, or join her Cult) that Ghaiogrilb doesn't nomnomnom it and gain stability instead? Not good odds on that working.

Get fucked, squiggly

I concur; "Fuck off, Squidgace! *Flips Da' Birds*"

We might need to kill this thing, but we also need to think about tommorow. And this thing sounds suited to doing perma-damage, so if it say, eats our leg, we'll be on a prosthetic for the rest of the quest. Flipside, is it needs it's kill-streak to survive large exertions, an nothing like an opponent that smacks you before running away to be a pain!
