[X] Refuse to buy any of them.
There's just not much incentive to rush grab any particular power at the moment, and due to that particular fact, the right move for now seems to be 'greeding' for the EXP booster.
You decide to hold off on purchasing any of these abilities despite their potential usefulness, the increased leveling from Swift Growth I is to valuable to waste point on anything else. With your intentions made known the panel disperses and returns to the flame as something entirely separate takes its place. All before you the dreamscape seems to warp as the multi-colored flame expands, your transient form in this space screaming in pain as something takes shape before you.
In moments the blank void is replaced by a grand hall complete with ornate pillars, intricate tiles displaying scenes of battle and heroism, murals showing all form of sentient being teaching younger generations, and in the middle of it all? Seven vast statues dominate the space, before them are five pedestals upon which objects rest and immediately one of them draws your attention.
On the far right is a pedestal that is smaller, made of decaying wood and bits of rubble upon which an open book rests. A tiny, rusted iron plaque swings from the front upon which are the words 'Scholar of the Land' while the book itself contains exceedingly tiny script. The words are so small you can't even read them filling up only one and half pages of the book, and yet you instinctively understand what they are.
Whatever else this book might be as well, it is you. Everything you've ever experienced, or done and every fragment of knowledge known to you is recorded in the plain leather-bound book.
"... All of the sum of my life only equals to one and a half pages in this book. All I've achieved in these scant few weeks is more than many and yet the value of it lays in front of me..."
While you stand there, truly stand there for now you find your strange spiritual form replaced with your true body, a feeling begins to emerge from within you...
What is it? [] Joy
[] Sadness
[] Fear
[] Anger
---
After you've spent some time looking at the book you finally notice the tiny script beneath the title 'Scholar of the Land' upon your plague. You mutter it aloud as you read,
Your eyes narrow at that as you step back and turn to examine the other pedestals.
First of them: Upon a solid wooden podium with a stone base, faint signs of cracks running through both wood and stone, rests a neatly folded religious vestment. It's colors are indistinct and the vestments radiate a faint black light that obscures any attempts to gleam something from it. It's plaque reads 'Shepherd of the Dead' and below that reads "Unknown Mortal, Minuscule Change, One Hundred Twenty Legacy Points.
Second among them: Upon a podium of stone whose appearance is plain, but without fault rests a simple iron hammer. Writing in a language you do not understand, or even know of flows all along it's surface and heat seems to radiate from it causing sweat to drip down your face. It's plaque reads 'Forger of Mountains' and below that "Unknown Mortal, Minuscule Change, Two Hundred and Twenty One Legacy Points."
Third is: An altar carved of common stone in the shape of a strange octopus whose tentacles end in razor sharp point and with a beak from which... lightning seems to crackle. Laying on top of it is a trident that seems to be made of copper, incomprehensible shapes and figures skittering across it's surface as the smell of the ocean invades your nose. It's plaque reads 'Voice of What Lies Below' and "Renowned Mortal, Bringer of Great Change, Two Thousand and Twelve Legacy Points."
Fourth and final among them is: An utterly plain, simplistic pillar made of obsidian with no other defining features upon it. On top of it is a single femur, the origin unknown to you for all your lacking knowledge, but you are certain of one thing - a bone should not be purple and flecked with black spots forming strange patterns. Standing before it you feel your heart slow down, cold sweat drenches your body, and the looming threat of death encompasses you only fought back by the flame inside of you.
You take a moment to quickly read the plaque before retreating away from the pedestal, it reads 'That Which Longs for Rest' followed by "Sealed Transcendent, Cataclysm, Twenty thousand and Fifty Three Legacy Points."
As you pull away and the feeling pressing on you disappears you focus on that particular pedestal and speak to no-one in particular.
"Whoever, or whatever that is is an absolute lunatic. More importantly, what the hell is this place?"
You are utterly shocked when a strange, distorted and monotone voice answers from behind you.
"It is the Temple of Heroic Spirits, a monument to the existence of those like you and a place unknown to almost all other than the Chosen Existences."
Spinning on your heels you turn back towards what should be the temple entrance, a direction you hadn't bothered to look since your arrival for some inconceivable reason. Behind you rests a brazier larger than any house you've ever seen other than the Lord's own keep within which burns a great multi-colored flame. Your brain is suddenly truly blank for the first time since your initiation into the School, unable to comprehend the vast... Suddenly a thought appears in that void,
"Does this even count as a form of existence? I am, so very far beyond my depth here."
Once again the voice replies in answer to what you believed to be a thought known only to you.
"I am the origin, the Arbitrator and Source of the Heroic Spirits resting within all Vessels. That is all you need know, or ask for nothing more will you learn. You've been brought here for your progress is... acceptable, but I wished to show you that with which you compete. Instill within you the drive to press forward, advance faster than you have and reap the rewards to further build your Legacy. What say you, Vessel?"
You pause in thought before replying... [] Write-in.

Even if it's small... even if it's barely a page in length... someone sees within our efforts something great, and has sought to immortalize our life among the Records of Heroes. That's something to be proud of.
[X] What is the competition you refer to between myself and the other Legacies?
I wanna check to see if we're expected to out-do anyone, or create a greater legend, or if this is going full F/SN and we'll have to fight until only one remains. Or if the competition that the Flame mentioned is just a race to become a full-fledged heroic spirit. Basically, I wanna know if we should be anticipating getting ganked by these guys if they find out what we are.
I dunno, the Flame could have used the phrase "with which you compete." as a sign of comparison, in which cause this write-in tells us nothing of importance. But if there is some kind of competition between Heroic Legacies, it'd be extremely nice to know of it.
I'd say my reaction would be more amusement than anything else. John should already be aware that he's a smol newb, but seeing the scale that he's being weighed on and the heights that something apparently believes he's capable of reaching... Well, since write-in isn't an option here, I'm guessing this is the closest to what I'm going for?

Though Fear and Sadness are also possible parts of it. The only one I'm not going for is Anger.
Given this, I'm not sure if a question is an appropriate reply? Or at least, it's probably not going to answer anything we ask it. It's just asking how we're responding to its encouragement(?) to grow faster.

...Speaking of, I have an idea on how we might do just that.
Copy then Dominate Archbishop Julian Vandamule's Sealed Scroll
If I recall correctly we erase whatever we Dominate, and additionally, and INTERESTINGLY, we could also later apply the power to the ACTUAL scroll for true redaction/destructive purposes if we get caught with the thing. Of course that's assuming we choose to ride that particular ticket to greatness as opposed to something else.

Good idea. We might not get as much of a bonus as we would from the real thing, but Dominating a copy of a centuries old text of hidden lore from a secular leader is sure to have some effect.
But yeah, in the future I'd like to make more use of Dominate Writing. It lets us gain a buff suited for whatever task we need to undertake, which is great.
Actually, I just had an idea. What if our character were to write out an itinerary/day-plan/checklist thing every morning about what he wants to accomplish, and then Dominate it. Would we just get a passive buff to all actions we had planed to take that day? Because if so, that's absolutely amazing.
Plus, when we become more of a scholar and have enough knowledge to write books about topics, along with having a skill that lets us write stupidly quickly, we could become insanely broken via just making a book containing our knowledge on a subject and then Dominating it.
Giving this a deeper look...I suspect this place to effectively be this world's Throne of Heroes, and we are being compared to any/all other Heroic Spirits we personally are aware of.
Forger of Mountains-this could be the man who made the Bastion Mountain Range, he was a Heroic Spirit like we were.
That Which Longs for Rest-This, I'm guessing is He Who Defied Death, and probably is the 'THING' we sensed looking at us when we found that scroll. I don't know what's going on that he's bound, but I think we REALLY need to learn more before we mess with him.
Additionally, a potential endpoint to the Archbishop's scroll is putting that information into a book we submit to the Guild...Assuming That Which Longs for Rest won't just immediately flatten us for daring to do such a thing, given that his pedestal emitted a similarly described feeling as what came over us for reading that sealed scroll.
In fact...I would daresay that it's likely He Who Defied Death is basically the power that enables/backs and supports the Guild system, or at least is the reason for the warning concerning Dying to the Darkness being better then Death by Treason, which is probably important to note.
Plus, when we become more of a scholar and have enough knowledge to write books about topics, along with having a skill that lets us write stupidly quickly, we could become insanely broken via just making a book containing our knowledge on a subject and then Dominating it.
Actually, given that the narrative effects of Dominating a Writing is that we're able to perfectly recall the knowledge we absorb while the buff lasts, I suspect that kind of cheese won't work. Because if we're writing down our own knowledge that we already understand, then absorbing it for perfect recall won't actually do anything. We're just recycling information we already have. That's why I suspect that Dominating the same book copies that we used for Harvesting and Haggling will eventually stop working once we've achieved the Beginner Skill level, and we'll have to find another book with related but new information for us to use Dominate on for the boost.

On the one hand, yeah, it'd probably have reduced effects if it was our own knowledge used. But if we truly took the time to write up a compendium of all that we knew about a subject, being able to recall everything instantly is sure to be a great help.
It'd be like being able to bring notes to a test, having a perfect copy of all our knowledge about a subject that we could look through is sure to help.

Your voice echoes through the hall, the largely empty space somehow not creating echoes of your voice while the thing before you seems to burn in utter silence as it listens. By the time you're finished you can almost feel the flame before you in deep thought before it finally replies,
"... Acceptable, and understandable. Once again I will still urge you forward for even an ant may one day be renowned through the mountain they call home. A Hero does not await greatness, it is sought out and overcome with any and every mean at their disposal.
Now, you may peruse the Temple as you see fit, you have some small amount of time before you must return and perhaps you will find something worth inspiration."
With that the flame falls silent and you turn to look at the Temple around you. Out of all of it you've only looked at those pedestals, perhaps a closer look is needed for the statues behind them or maybe the murals upon the wall are worth
What do you do? [] Look at the statues placed behind the pedestals.

[] Investigate the tiles beneath your feet for they contain countless scenes of battle intricately carved on them.
