The Second Rome: A Quest of Ancient Byzantium

I want to be a mentor to Anna, maybe even help her ascend the throne when Alexios dies.

A quick word of warning to those who may hope to rule as emperor at some point (a by no means certain thing). It is almost certainly going to be easier to seize the Imperial throne from non-dynastic generals like Alexios Komnenos and Nikephoros Phokas (or their potential heirs) than from established and beloved dynasties like the House of Makedon or the later House of Komnenos during/immediately after the reigns of their best emperors.

I'd be satisfied with marrying a child of ours to Anna or whoever the emperor's heir is. Our blood will continue in future emperors and we would have a hand in raising our grandson, the ensuing emperor.

@BurningLaugh

Well, as Telamon said, trying to switch our religion would likely result in our assassination, and we'd probably lose any support we have with the Western powers, and we wouldn't gain any support from the East, so it would be risking everything for nothing.
I am well aware of that. I'm mostly curious if it is possible for us to secretly convert to those, so we could lay down the foundation and seeds so centuries later one of our descendants could openly declare the faith. When we have enough supporters and strong enough hold to avoid a coup, and a civil war would be evenly matched or in favor of us.

You see this gentlemen? This is putting ones own desires over that of Rome. Death to the Heretic and may the Light of the God Emperor shine across the known world once more.

Are we coming of age in the year indicated, or born in that year? Either way, serving as a capable general under a capable emperor during an era of nigh-constant warfare seems like a solid career decision.

Yes...returning to Rome's culture and religious beliefs is evil...plus I be down with worshipping the God Emperor, he is structured like a Roman God and will do more than the deity we crucified.

Well, by switching religions we are risking being assassinated or starting a civil war, either now or down the line when it would be openly declared. Also, it would give the Roman Church a reason to rise up against us and possibly unite the Western powers against us. This plan offers neither us or Rome any benefits, and in fact risks that the Byzantine Empire may fall even earlier than it actually does. Which means you are risking Rome and its power for no reason.

That is why i said (if we go along with it) to do it at an optimal moment. When we are Rome and not Byzantium. When we can afford to do it and have a good chance st victoriously pulling it off, so when the western powers are non-existant or irrelevant to our power and might.

I don't think there ever will be an "optimal" time. The old Hellenic faith is dead and gone. The entirety of Europe is following some form of Christianity. If one of the great pillars of Christianity suddenly said they were following dead pagan gods then they would turn on that person and invade. No matter how "secure" you become both internal and external forces will kill you.

@Destrark that's not how you vote, you have to put the [X] in front

This isn't much better. The Church would probably rebel, and we would be ousted as Emperor.

I'll make this simple:
I do not expect us to restore the ancient faiths since it is completely out of character for everyone at the time of Byzantium's decline.
It would be nice, but i'm saying that it would have to be done when literally no one can oppose us in any way. When hellenism rivals Christianity, when western powers are subservient or non-existent, etc

Hellenism is dead, curch made sure of that.
If we were to convert even if all western powers are out we would be ousted by uprising from within, remember Rome at its height had its share of uprisings and for our fate, well Nero though that no one can oppose him and look where that got him.

Vote check. My guess is the Isaurian's in front. SV's a sucker for female protagonists.

EDIT: Oh, that's closer than I thought. It'd be a shame if someone broke that tie. Voting for my stuff.
