The barren fields run red with blood. Arrows, spears, and shattered swords jut out of the broken bodies of comrades and enemies. The camps run quiet, men tending to their wounds and mourning their lost.
Around a crackling campfire, two men sat next to each other, one a man well into his forties and another just barely on the cusp of twenty.
Han Fu smiled a bitter smile. Wang Chang reminded him too much of the son he never had.
His youth, though tarnished by the battlefield, still glowed just that little bit. Even losing Yu Chang to that hail of arrows didn't seem to affect him much, unlike Fu; his heart broke just that little bit more, every time he looked out to that field and felt Chang's broken spirit. It certainly broke the heart of Yong Chen; they had been the best of friends, apparently, and when Yong Chen returned to the camp he simply went into his tent and never came out.
But that was a few hours ago, and this was now; old men like Fu needed to be present for the younger ones, while they still drew breath, at least.
Even if it was being present to hear about the girl Wang Chang was sweet on.
- "I'm telling you, Mr. Han, it was love at first sight! I can't wait to go home to her...say, Mr. Han, don't you have children too? Can you tell me what that's like?"
[][CHI] Tell him about the time you sparred with your daugther

The sun rose. Han Fu stretched himself, grabbed his...

and set out for another day of battle.
"You know, Wang Chang, when this is all over I'd like you to visit my family some time," Han Fu said, eyes watching his opposite among the Yang army.
"Really? Where do you live, Mr. Han?" Wang Chang asked.
"If I remembered right, you said you were from the Xishan village, right? In that case, head east to Nanhu village, and then follow the trail southwest to Erse; we live just around there, you should be able to ask around," Fu said.
"I'm honored, Mr. Han. Actually, why don't you come with us, when this is over? You've offered, so even if our place isn't as impressive as yours I should offer you the same courtesy, right?" Chang bubbled.
"Then I am likewise honored," Fu smiled.
The horns blew. Orders incoming. The two grimaced, and braced themselves.
Men pressed in from all sides, barely allowing even enough room to swing a sword. The smell of blood and rotting entrails assaulted the air, the haze of dust, the wails of the wounded and dying filling what little remained.
Breatch came short. Limbs grew heavy. A thrust aimed at the man in front barely missing Chang's torso. A slash aimed at the man to the left, blocked by Zhen's sword.
In the center was Han Fu wading forward, slicing, stabbing, and parting the men in front of him. MARTIAL: 98 OPPOSED AVERAGE: 60
The Yang army noticed this front collapsing just a little faster than it should've been. Qiu Pan was sent in to stop that.
Han Fu felt the rumbling before he heard it, felt the crowd parting more than saw it through the incoming attacks, Yong Chen dead or injured by the attacks on his right flank.
When the way parted, he saw the worst nightmare: mounted troops, headed by a man with armor and glaive. An officer, in other words. Coming straight for him. MARTIAL: 174 OPPOSED AVERAGE: 60
The officer's glinting glaive took the heads of people he should not've been able to reach; instinctively, Han Fu realized that as he currently was, he had no hope.
As he currently was.
Thump. They would all die, his promise unfulfilled. Thump. He'd never get to see his child again. Thump.
That...Thump. Was...Thump...unacceptable. Thump.
Han Fu roared.
SHATTERING THE LIMIT COST: -50 MARTIAL
The officer's glave swept for his side. Han Fu could feel the wind the glaive brought down in its path.
SHATTERING THE LIMIT: 98 + 5 (Tutorial) = 103
MARTIAL: 98 + 103 = 200 LIMIT REACHED
Just as the edge kissed his skin, Han Fu swung to intercept.
SHATTERING THE LIMIT: 24 + 5 (Tutorial) = 29
MARTIAL: 200 + 29 = 200 LIMIT REACHED
With a mighty blow, the officer was forced back. The glaive came down again and again, but now where Han Fu once only saw a blur he saw the lines that the weapon would cleave, the net the officer was trying to weave. Han Fu then saw how to strike through it.
MARTIAL: 200 OPPOSED: 190 Minor Success
The officer leaned to the side, dodging most of the strike.
But not all, as Fu's wet blade could attest.
MARTIAL: 200 OPPOSED: 154 Major Success
The shock took the officer by surprise, the net and weave growing thinner, countless openings exposed to the edge of Han Fu's blade.
Han Fu took advantage of most of them.
MARTIAL: 200 OPPOSED: 87 - SHATTER INTERRUPT
Then, as Han Fu's blade began closing in for a kill, the officer lowered his spear, and roared.
SHATTER THE LIMIT COST: -50 MARTIAL
Han Fu's blade found a chink in the armor.
SHATTER THE LIMIT: 94 + 10 (SHATTERED LIMIT) = 114
MARTIAL: 118 + 114 = 200 LIMIT REACHED
The officer leaned back and swatted Han Fu's blade aside.
SHATTER THE LIMIT: 88
MARTIAL: 200 + 88 = 200 LIMIT REACHED
Again the net of strikes was tightened, the weave turning away Han Fu's blades and constricting around him.
But there was still an opening.
MARTIAL: 200 OPPOSED: 183 Minor Success.
Another scratch against the officer, another line scored against him. Han Fu could feel the officer's fear. That made the net start falling apart once more.
MARTIAL: 200 OPPOSED: 146 Major Success
And with that came the series of heavier and heavier blows, striking at the officer's wounds previous wounds, the untouched, gradually working their way to the most important parts.
MARTIAL: 200 OPPOSED: 129 - SHATTER INTERRUPT
Again the spear lowered. A roar filled the air.
SHATTER THE LIMIT: 88 + 15(???) = 103
MARTIAL: 129 + 103 = 231
This time, the blade came for his neck, but with a deft spin the blade was knocked away.
SHATTER THE LIMIT: 31
MARTIAL: 231 + 31 = 262
Suddenly, the officer's spear multiplied. Almost as if the officer's blade was twice as fast, Han Fu could not find a single opening.
MARTIAL: 200 OPPOSED: 263 MAJOR DEFEAT
The weave tightened, the thrust Han Fu thought was aimed at his head swiftly turning into a strike with the butt against his thigh, driving him to a knee.
Han Fu could feel it. The situation had become hopeless again.
Han Fu roared.
MARTIAL 137 OPPOSED: 263-SHATTER INTERRUPT
SHATTER THE LIMIT COST: -50 MARTIAL
The glaive came for his neck.
SHATTER THE LIMIT: 52
MARTIAL: 87 + 52 = 139
But this time, it wasn't enough.
MARTIAL: 139 OPPOSED: 280
Han Fu's neck was sliced open. His vision grew dark.
The last words he heard were:
"A worthy opponent like you deserves to know the name of your killer; my name is Qiu Pan."
A man, heavily wounded, came for your family. He had been making a nuisance of himself in the market, enough so that the village council finally relented.
He introduced himself as "Wang Chang, of the Xishan village."
He said he had important news, weapon strapped to his back.
When he came to your front door, he kneeled, and presented the weapon.
"This was your father's weapon."
Distantly, you could feel something hit your knees. How was this man so tall? So blurry?
"He was a great man."
You stare up at him, desperately, silently begging him to stop.
This quest will run using CKII-style stats, and have two types of turns: Estate turns, and Campaign turns. More will be explained as they become relevant.
Stats
Leadership – The ability to lead others into following your wishes
Martial – The ability to fight
Charisma – The ability to charm, and empathize
Piety – The ability to have faith
Learning – The ability to understand
Special Mechanic: Limits
Each stat is Limited at 100-point intervals; once you reach 00 in any stat you cannot advance any further, either through training or combat, unless… Special Mechanic: Shattering The Limit
When engaging an opponent or a challenge that is Overwhelmingly Difficult (50+ point differential between skill and DC), you may choose to Shatter The Limit. Doing so instantly applies a long-term -50 debuff to the skill in question; if you happened to have a low Martial score at that moment there is a nonzero chance you could instantly die on the spot or be Mortally Wounded, and even if you succeed you will be carrying that debuff for a few updates at minimum.
However, you then roll a 1d100 and add that bonus on to your score, capped by the Limit, except if you roll a 100. If you roll a 100 or higher, negate the -50 debuff, ignore the previous Limit, and gain a straight +100 to that stat. You may also choose to attempt to Shatter The Limit again, but if the attempt comes off of a first attempt to Shatter The Limit you do not take a debuff.
A note on bonuses: Bonuses that work on Shattering The Limit are few and far between. Do not count on them to power you through.
Omake Bonuses
Omakes that I give ratings for are always going to be +15 at a minimum and may result in actions by other actors being taken offscreen.
That being said, only the ones that I threadmark with the prefix SHATTERING THE LIMIT are going to be eligible for adding onto Shattering The Limit; otherwise, that remains the only event that Omake bonuses will not apply to.
Estate Turns
Each Turn will consist of an entire Season. Each turn, you may take up to 5 Actions, and if you have retainers or people you can influence, they may also take actions.
Estate Actions fall under four broad categories:
Network
Marketplace
Train
Special
Networking actions improve your Networking and Reputation; you might even be able to trade favor for favor here.
Marketplace actions are more direct; you may buy and sell products here.
Train actions train up a specific stat, but the person who does the training action recieves that stat upgrades and no one else.
Special actions are far more varied, and will change from Event to Event.
Item Quality
All items have a certain quality: this quality represents the combined check the item can withstand before reducing Quality. For example, the wooden sticks you and your Dad sparred with had a Quality of 160; that is to say, they could withstand the combined Martial check of your 75 Martial and your Dad's 83 Effective Martial without taking any damage. However, if your Dad had rolled an effective Martial of, say, 90, your combined 75 and 90 Martial would've dealt 165-160 = 5 Quality Damage to your sticks, reducing the wooden stick's Quality to 155. Each further exchange might lower the item Quality even further, and if a 400 Martial character decided to try and swing the wooden stick it'd shatter in their hands after a single exchange.
If unmaintained, Item Quality will steadily drop. If under heavy use, Item Quality might drop anyway.

"Truly?" Wang Chang asked.
"Indeed, she was just as fiery as her hair; we had to keep her inside the house to keep all the boys safe from her," Han Fu chuckled.
"In fact, let me tell you about that time she asked to spar with me...
"Da-ad, come on, spar with me!" you bubbled.
"Fine, fine, I did promise that if dinner was good that I'd 'spar' with you," Dad smiled.
You scoffed. Someone wasn't willing to admit that he took one bite and sat there with a dumb grin on his face for good several heartbeats.
"I'm sorry, daughter of mine, it was excellent," Dad rolled his eyes.
That was more like it.
"Now come on, Dad, I wanna spar!"
"Alright, alright. Are you ready?" he said, lazily letting his sword hang.
You gripped your sword and brought it into a guard stance.
You nodded.
"Alright. Then let's begin," he drawled, letting his sword hang.
You tensed, waiting for - he wasn't moving.
LEARNING: 70 OPPOSED: 1
He was taking it easy on you!
Well, that just wouldn't do.
MARTIAL: 75 OPPOSED: 76 - 48 (Going Easy) = 22
You stepped forward, you eyes already drawing the arc of the sword as it swung through his neck.
He saw the same thing, sword lazily coming up to lock with your sword.
You stepped forward and left, yielding the lock and stepping straight into his guard, edge of the wooden stick against his throat.
"Yield," you said.
Dad dropped his sword and put his hands up.
"Alright, alright, I yield, daugther of mine," he laughed.
You lowered your sword.
"That wasn't a good spar, Dad," you pouted. "You were holding back!"
His face got serious.
"Do you really want to fight me at my best?" he asked.
You nodded sharply.
"If you insist, daughter of mine."
You both pulled back, your Dad picking up his stick as he went by.
You drew your sword up into a guard stance, and you can't help but notice your Dad doing the same.
"Ready?" he asked.
You tensed. Nodded.
MARTIAL: 75 OPPOSED: 83
You see his sword come up, and you match it. His sword disengages as he steps to the right, aiming to do what you just did to him - but you know how to counter it.
Your sword twirls beneath his as you lean back to deflect the blow upward, sending the wooden edge barely skimming your nose - just as he shoulder checks you.
Knocked off balance, you stumble back a few steps, breathing just that little bit heavier.
MARTIAL: 67 OPPOSED: 84
Your form, already a little bit off, can't stand up to your dad's new attack, axe swing telegraphed as something that would blow your defenses wide open, and yet undodgeable all the same.
Impact. You can feel it all thoroughout your right arm, barely holding onto your sword - but. You still have it.
MARTIAL: 50 OPPOSED: 74
But that doesn't stop your dad from stepping inside your open guard. His sudden slice forces you to quickly backpedal, not letting you find a stable stance to guard anymore.
MARTIAL: 26 OPPOSED: 59
Then, just as your about to finally find a stable footing, Dad shoulder-checks you again, knocking you to the ground.
His sword appears at your throat.
"Yield," he says.
You sigh, closing your eyes.
"I yield, Dad."
You pouted.
"H-hey, what's with that face? I'm the best swordsman in Erse village, it shouldn't be disappointing if you don't win against me going all-out!" your Dad backpedaled.
You pouted harder, scrunching up your face.
"H-hey, please stop giving me that face...I'll train you if you want!" he said, nearly crying.
Your pout instantly disappeared, smile shining like the sun peeking through clouds.
"Ai ya-ah, I'm being bullied by my own flesh-and-blood daughter," Dad huffed, scratching his head.
"Truth be told, she might've even been able to beat me," Han Fu chuckled.
"Your daughter nearly beat you?! Please don't tell me all kids are like that..." Wang Chang asked, nervously.
"No, they aren't all like that. It's just that my daughter is the most special, beautiful daughter in the world," Fu said, sticking out his tongue.
The teasing smile dropped from Han Fu's face, as he said :"In all seriousness, I have to put it this way: your wife may be the most beautiful woman in the world, but the most precious people in your life will always be your children, got it?"
Wang Chang solemnly nodded.
"Just...make sure to treat your family that way, and you'll be happy, alright?"
"I understand, Mr. Han. Thank you for your wisdom."
Shakily, you got up, one hand on your father's sword.
"T-thank you, Mr. Wang. W-would you like to come inside?" you offer, tears streaking down your face.
"Y-yes, I would," he said, sniffling.
You led him into your house. The house you had cleaned for your father's return. The table, set out and polished with three seats by the window.
The place of honor, for his sword.
You shut your eyes, and tried to act as the perfect host.
"Here, have s-some tea," you offered, pulling out a seat for him by the table.
"Thank you kindly, Mrs. Han," he said, trembling just as badly as you were. "May I ask...are you his daughter?"
"Yes," you wept, sitting across from him.
"I'm sorry," he said, looking down. "I-if you ever need anything, don't hesitate to ask anything from me, Wang Chang of Xishan village, okay?"
You nodded.
"O-one more thing," he said. "Your father and I... had only been friends for a short little while, and yet I could already tell what a great man he was. Could you...could you tell me more about your father?"
