Let's Jump to It! [Jumpchain Quest]

And now, for some more last-minute campaign advertising:

Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen,

Here at Plan Angel With an AK-74M, we believe that our protagonist should be *more* than just a pretty face and a librarian. So far, most of our plans revolve around what looks to be gathering as many different forms of magic as possible. While this is, in fact, useful, it sorely underestimates the potential of both the character and the universe we're in.

A true hero doesn't just sit in a library all day, alternating between stuffing her nose in a book and archiving various tidbits of knowledge she may have built up over time like the normal, boring librarians. Sure, these books and various tidbits of magic might be useful and quite powerful, but the way these plans are constructed does not take full advantage of this, either.

For example, the plan currently tied with us has selected wandless magic, of all things. As a magician from another universe who specializes in Arcane Magic, this should be something that we could figure out on our own anyways. Likewise, while Fiendfyre is good for a guaranteed attack, as somebody who's backstory involves "significant progress" in "interacting with raw magic directly", this shouldn't be something that we can't find at least a close analogue to without spending 250 points on. Thus, that is five hundred points wasted on things we can get anyways.

Instead, what our plan proposes to do is create a daring, ambitious young lady who's not afraid to think outside the fourth-dimensional box and combine mundane science with magical knowledge to create magitech, something that would literally be an outside-context problem for an insular culture that doesn't have much contact with the non-magical world. She would be able to truly innovate instead of walking in the footsteps of those that came before her, and stand on the front lines of any conflict that she's involved in to truly fight for what she believes in. With an invisibility cloak, a time-turner, hammerspace, and sufficient firepower, we could be a cross between Nanoha and Homura Akemi, using everything but the kitchen sink to protect that which is valuable to us.

Plus with the more heavy gear plan, we can obtain items that will be very useful in-universe and out of it compared to some other perks. Most especially the setup wizard perk which would give a significant boost to our character's goal of trying to understand magic better and uniting both fields of understanding (magic and science) into a more complete and potentially powerful whole.

I mean that would be huge for the magical world, half-bloods, and muggle born especially. They can take advantage of the normal humans advances without sacrificing all the traditions of magic, that would urk the hell out of the pure bloods otherwise.

Come on, being remembered as the "Mother of Unity" would be awesome.

July 24th 1991

Your name is Vivian Majere; Scion of the Ancient and Noble House of Majere. Born March 31 1980, your family tree has been filled with witches and wizards for over five hundred of year. Prophesized to bring about a reign of darkness come the new millennium due to being the only which born during an unexpected eclipse.
Family Roll: 1d100= 13 (Bad Luck). Affiliation Roll: 1d3= 3 (Neutral)
Your grandmother has done her best to teach you everything you need to know to inherit the Majere household, after your parents died in the war. Something she has drilled into your head from a young age. Proper manners when at formal events, how to conduct yourself in front of your peers in such a way that you don't cause the house to lose face, and to think before you go off and join a madman just to get yourself killed in an attempt to accomplish the noble goal of blood-purity in the most ham-handed way possible!

She rants about that last one at length given the smallest reason.

Still, you are also Vivian Majere; centuries-old scholar of magic from an alternate Earth and winner of a cosmic-lottery that ended up with you being able to go on a Jumpchain adventure.
Resist Trauma (childhood) Roll: 1d100= 84 + 15 (Resolve) + 25 (Occlumency) = 124 (Crit!) + 1d100 = 19 (143); Req: 85; Result: Great Success.
Your studies into the nature of magic itself were considered revolutionary by the modern magical community, and you were no slouch in the more mundane sciences. You've lived through witch-hunts, revolutions, civil wars, world wars, times of persecution, & times of peace.

Dowager Majere's smothering, archaic, and downright toxic methods of raising a child might have left an ordinary person a mental-wreck, even with training in occlumency. You however, have been around the proverbial block before. It took you a few hours, but you were able to go through the memories of your new life to isolate and work through the more traumatic ones.

Still, you'll probably need to do something about your grandmother at some point, or weren't going to be able to accomplish your Scenario, let alone half of the goals you'd set for yourself.

Anyway, you've just gotten back from a visit to Diagon Alley, after having finally recieved your Hogwarts letter. In which you'd managed to pick up your wand (9 1/2 inches, cherry wood with a unicorn tail core, slightly bendy), a Nimbus 2000 broom (which you have special permission to bring with you to Hogwarts), and a tawny owl to handle your mail.
Roll: 1d2= 2 (female)
You still have to name her, actually:

[] Write-In

She seems pleased enough with the name (you think).

Aside from that, your grandmother has gifted you with a number of books that have been passed down in the family, and a dragon-hide longcoat that apparently belonged to your mother.

You idly stretch out on your (ridiculously comfortable) bed, musing to yourself how hectic today was.

Hey, discovering that you're a pseudo-reincarnating dimensional-traveler and integrating your new memories would be exhausting by itself without the afternoon shopping-trip.

Currently, you have a little over a month before the school-year at Hogwarts begins.

How do you want to spend your time? (Pick 3)

[] Studying [Magic]: Your first-year schoolbooks seem fairly basic, but there's a lot of information to cover, and it's always good to start with the basics. Right?
[] Studying [Magic]: Majere Manor's libraries have books dating back to the 16th Century. You're sure you can find plenty of useful information in them.
[] Studying [Magic]: Another trip to Flourish and Blotts will be needed for more modern books. Your grandmother may object, though.
[] Studying [Culture]: Wizarding culture has developed in ways that diverge greatly from both modern society and the magical cultures from your own Earth. This must be investigated!
[] Studying [Other]: (Write-In)
[] Socializing [Peers]: Now that your Letter has arrived, your grandmother has been eager to introduce you to the scions of other houses. You can handle a few (dozen) social events, right?
[] Socializing [Grandmother]: You'll need to reach an understanding with her if you want to have any kind of working relationship. Might prove difficult, since you're (physically) eleven and she's set in her ways.
[] Socializing [Other]: (Write-In)
[] Write-In (must be okayed by the GM)

GM's Note: I almost started you guys at the beginning of the schoolyear, then I realized that jump is supposed to start on July 24th.

This is better, anyway, it let's you have some in-world prep-time before being thrust into the deathtrap institute of learning that is Hogwarts.

Anyway: Voting will begin at Noon (1200 PDT) tomorrow (Friday). Feel free to create and discuss plans until then

So, I'm thinking:

Getting a head start on Magical Knowledge so we can breeze through our schoolwork and have time to study more of the intricacies of magic in this setting. With our perks and past-life experiences we should also be able to navigate the intricacies of social life, but I'd also be willing to part with that action in favour of more studying or trying to gain access to other knowledge if our goal is to stay away from the public eye in this jump.

Are we planning on doing a second quick jump through HP after this one in order to optimize and gain other perks and items we have missed out on while taking the time to learn more about magic-- maybe also do a large ass supply run taking all the books/tomes/libraries/artifacts and potions ingredients we may need/want for the future?

How good her knowledge in healing and soul related magic?

Can we fix long term malnutrition with potions or magical healing?

Personally I want to damage canon beyond repair, and fix up the clusterfuck the harry situation, that kind of environment not healthy for a child, I think we can at least fix up his long term physical abuse which he suffered under his relatives.

Magics old and new at our fingertips; are we scholars or what ?

A bit of socialization may be needed given the prophecy drawback ?

Please do keep in mind that voting isn't starting for another five hours and change.

Knowledge is power, yes, and given how just about everybody else has chosen this there really isn't much of a point in going against the flow, eh?

[] Studying [Magic]: Another trip to Flourish and Blotts will be needed for more modern books. Your grandmother may object, though.

This is probably as close as we're going to get to familiarizing ourselves with current events et cetera. Knowledge of the society we're going into is quite useful, and depending on just how out of date our private library is, that would be good.

Might not be terribly useful for "ALL TEH KNOWLEDGE!" but would be a good way to get a grip on where everything is at the moment. Things like "internal politics of the Ministry at the moment", "just how stagnant this magical society is", and "how does this wizarding society even work" would be questions that are best answered by stuff that doesn't predate the Enlightenment. Even if we have a decade of false memories crammed into our heads, these are things that kids our age wouldn't be interested in knowing, anyways.

[] Studying [Culture]: Wizarding culture has developed in ways that diverge greatly from both modern society and the magical cultures from your own Earth. This must be investigated!

Once again, getting a good grip on the society that we've found ourselves in. This would allow us to find out more about the world around us, and learn to interact more with this version of mundane society. Given how wizards routinely underestimate muggles, this might give us an edge in the future.

Now, for the one item that I am actively against:
[] Socializing [Peers]: Now that your Letter has arrived, your grandmother has been eager to introduce you to the scions of other houses. You can handle a few (dozen) social events, right?

Networking is useful, yes, but how much of this can't we do later on? We're going to be meeting most of these people when we get on the train to Hogwarts, and meeting them before hand doesn't really give us a significant advantage in a first year, "your biggest problems are a shitty obstacle course and a troll" context. Friends and connections will be everything in the future, but that's not an immediate concern.

I suggest we vote for:

[] Studying [Magic]: Your first-year schoolbooks seem fairly basic, but there's a lot of information to cover, and it's always good to start with the basics. Right?

Studying the basics might seem foolish at first, but remember, this is a different universe than our character is from. It's entirely possible that key rules for magic using are different than what our noble hero is used too. Also, we can get the most pertinent information from the past in our normal studies.

Your knowledge of healing magics is quite good; it's one of the few areas where your home-world's magic is better than this world's magic (and how you made most of your money there-in). Long-term malnutrition potions is something that will take time, and would be better-accomplished with potions, but you can do it.

On the other hand, your knowledge of soul-related magics is fairly sparse. While theoretically, you know the basics of having magic interact with the soul, your practical use if it is limited to a binding and banish ghosts and the like. This is probably more than most Wizards on this world know, though.

As for messing with canon, keep in mind that you guys took the Drawback that removed your out-of context knowledge of the HP-Verse.

That said, your very presence will cause butterflies, especially with those other Drawbacks.

Studying Culture and Peers are probably top tier options at this juncture. Minimal HP magic advancement is comparatively tame advantage to actually knowing people and laying foundations for the future helpful connections.

...Altho we kind of picked the shut-in magi academic character, I suppose. Just going all in on magic as a first action set is pretty appropriate and is a pretty clear statement.

And impressing other first years and teachers with minor tricks also counts for something, I suppose.

but we will make choices and select options how we will interact with others, and we got canon knowledge so we can use than and control the insert. we took great cunning that makes us a great social manipulator, and why not use those skills to endear us to Harry aka boy who lived.
