[X] Do it yourself while he's still stuck

we can do it and if he figures it out cool if not we will have.

Andre's steel-grey eyes -- almost exactly the same shade as her hair -- go back to you. "Your… initiative may not be entirely regulation, North," she says, "but I won't lie and say I don't prefer this to flying into things as blind as we were. Well done, and don't do it again."

You fight the urge to fidget under her gaze. You're not entirely certain how to take that last comment. Fortunately, there's only one response required of you. "Yes, ma'am," you say.

That's what Captain Andre said the first time North decided to take initiative. "Don't do it again," she said. As per her orders, I am inclined to do this one by the book, verbally and without mercy. After all, we must politely defer to our lawful superior in his area of expertise. Even if it renders him apoplectic.

Either option will probably get North in trouble. I just like this one more, because it's technically not going against orders.

[X] Tell him about his mistake out loud, drawing attention to it

Quietly messaging Mazlo is just... not at all something worth doing, I feel. He got a medal, for work he didn't do. If he can't even feel enough shame to graciously turn THAT down, when it wasn't even him that discovered the message, then he's not going to suddenly be filled with benevolent gratitude this time around.

North might have told us not to do it again, but loudly announcing a co-worker's mistake is just squabbling in front of a superior. This is a military ship, and we are here to do a job. Chaos on the bridge will not look good. Calmly present the solution to the captain, and make the matter a fait accompli. There is no path in which engaging with Mazlo is a good thing.

He already hates us, might as well show him up to improve our own standing.

"Out loud" does not mean "loudly". Just mentioning aloud that he's using the wrong cipher is hardly squabbling. But boy oh boy would it be embarrassing to him.

Mazlo hasn't missed a single opportunity to rub North's face in something when he believes she's wrong. He set the tone on the bridge. Karma and Spite walk hand in hand.

I can understand wanting North to just do it herself. Makes sense, doesn't rock the boat. I'm just not in favor of always taking the passive-aggressive approach to everything. Confronting a superior's mistake, instead of undermining him again? Which is better? I don't know, but I do think the direct option would be cathartic. I wouldn't mind taking a minor dressing down from the captain if it's totally warranted and totally worth it. :D

It takes two to have an argument. Knowing that Mazlo is like this, do you think it's a good idea to give him cause to aggravate things further?

This is an active military bridge in the middle of an uncertain situation. It is not the time to let personal grievances rule, regardless of whose fault it would be.

Given how disgusted I am with Mazlo with using the Strawberry as an attempt to one up us, I'm going to abstain from voting here.

Ugh. This is a tough call. So far trying to play nice with Mazlo has gotten us nowhere fast, but... given his character so far, he's going to retaliate to either of the non-play nice options downstream. But also based on his demonstrated character, he's not going to exactly appreciate getting corrected even privately.

I'm sort of wish
[ ] Do nothing and let Mazlo embarrass himself.
was an option, but from the story it seems that we think there's at least some time pressure here ("Obviously, you have to rectify this situation, sooner rather than later") so...

I'm concerned that the "do it ourselves" option is going to escalate things even more than open correction. We'd be going over his head, basically delivering a challenge that he's unnecessary and we can do his job without him. Like, how does this play out? We do it, but then we have to tell someone about it, and even if we do that quietly they have to tell Mazlo "Never mind, North did it." He's going to know what we did.

By the book, not going behind his back, and trusting North is able to stay within the bounds of sounding like a helpful subordinate and not openly needling Mazlo. (Even if we totally are needling him.)

Sure. But by that point the captain has the requisite information, and we aren't directly engaging with Mazlo. That means if Mazlo kicks up a fuss, it's all on him.

Ultimately, the only way to make sure there's no fuss is to quietly correct Mazlo so he can take credit. Do you want to do that? I don't.

[X] Quietly send Mazlo a message alerting him to his mistake without embarrassing him

I am the kind of person who never forgets a grudge, but I don't move unless I can break someone with my choice, this is not such a situation. Doing it ourselves or embarassing Mazlo also has the problem of looking bad for us as well, especially as we just embarassed a superior from the Lily, doing it again so soon makes us look... kind of desperate for credit.
Also, the higher Mazlo reaches from other's work, the more satisfying his inevitable fall will be.

I'm almost reconsidering my own vote now, because this is the most malicious justification for a vote I've read so far and I kind of love it.

Hmmmm...
