Petals of Titanium -- My Life as a Mecha Setting Bridge Bunny Quest

Voted best in category in the Users' Choice awards.
Guys, Yun brought up a good point. By bringing this to the Princess we are going around the chain of command and making all our superiors look bad. Actually hold on @Gazetteer
For this quote is North considered the officer commanding, or is that someone higher up the chain? Because if it is us, I see no reason at all why we can't just look the other way, no write-in required.
....Mazlo will fck us up and be smug about it.

She's not really authorised to deputise or draft someone into the ship's crew without Captain Andre's permission. I am not implying that going with this option will necessarily definitely mean it will come across like going over your actual superiors' heads, but this is a course of action where even if things go well, you are setting things into motion which are basically immediately out of your hands, and you can't control how they turn out after that or if it ends up reflecting badly on you even if, ideally, this write-in could circumvent the "eventually I could get in trouble for this" angle. We are already aware that Andre has had to make a couple decisions here which she feels may be viewed unfavourably by the admiralty, so she's in a bit of an awkward spot with requests like "Hey can we give this kid a uniform and let her fix the ship". Whether or not you think it's a worthwhile course of action is going to be partially dependent on whether you think the bad factors present in the other ones are mitigated enough by doing it this way.

[X] Appoint Faiza as a civilian apprentice under Nowak's supervision
- [X] Nowak is required to record and create a report on Faiza's non-standard changes, including what was changed and how to fix it.

Okay yeah, @Gazetteer convinced me. Going for the write-in feels too much like saying 'there's this thing that I want to do but rather than take responsibility for it I foisted the responsibility and finagled the situation.'

Better to take responsibility for this and take the punishments if they come. Much better from a moral and meta perspective, especially with how it furthers our narative characterization.

I think it's #Hottake time.

Honestly time to pick a minority option here. I don't think anybody has made a particularly strong case for Option 3, including myself. It was one thing when it was a risk in the sense that it was a risk that we could mitigate. But now that we learn that it's a risk based upon factors completely outside our own control and we essentially have to hope for the best... I think that's a different ballgame. It's basically impossible to do a cost-benefit analysis here because we don't know the likelihood of the success concerning variables at play or even what, precisely, those variables are. The kid could be a huge help to us, this is true, but since we can't draft them and we're putting in a massive risk in keeping them around, I'm not sure that that help is necessarily worth the potential costs. And while I hypothesize relatively lighter costs, the fact remains that we have no idea what those costs will be, and they could be far harsher thna I hypothesized. We can't know. We can't even know exactly how the officials are going to take this- are we going to take it as going over thier heads? Are they merely going to take it as seeking aid without permission? Are they going to take it as something else entirely? We can't know, so we can't even know for sure what the risk is. What are we risking here? We can't be sure. Which makes this being the risk option true, but it's also the unknown option; there's so many unknowns that it's impossible to know what is even at stake. I hate the fact that I kind of want to play it safe here... but I kind of want to play it safe here.

Though not too safe mind- I don't want to spend the time going through all the repairs and reworking them, and this will surely earn us a far more mild reprimand than working with her to fix things. So...

[X] Have Faiza sent away, and quietly instruct the techs that that further "help" from her will not be tolerated

"Oh," you say, somewhat taken aback. "I was never any good at it. I don't pilot anything well even with practise, let alone a space mecha. I spend too much time second guessing and trying to find the best solution to everything. I'm just good with scans and readouts and language. Mother was slightly disappointed, but… my elder sister was a quite promising pilot."

(Emphasis added)

I spy a (probable) reference to the thread! :V

[X] Officially report Faiza's actions to your superiors
This will likely result in her being confined to her quarters, and almost certainly necessitates spending precious time spent reversal of her repairs.

Kid stuck her tongue out at us. I feel like the oujo-sama can't have that...

But why would you hate the great and heroic Mazlo whose quick thinking and skillful comms work is the only reason that Princess Dawnstar is still alive?
AAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH

One of these days, I hope when we pick the "Ship is Damaged" option, Mazlo is included in the casualty list. I hate him so much right now.

[X] Pretend you never saw Faiza, allow her to keep working

Okay, for future arguments sake, we've been playing this quest as if it's an anime/manga and we're a side character trying to get top billing.

With that in mind, the kid as obviously the kid genius who (can) help save everyone's lives. Basically, it boils down like this in my mind, which option has the best odds in keeping us from being punished while also letting the kid have the access they need to help.

While a lot of you are voting for looking the other way, you're not taking into account that it's only voting for *us* to look the other way. The rest of the people in our currently audience have nothing to do with this vote and if suitably pressed will likely snitch and point the finger at us. That's the whole risk of that vote. And, I don't know about ya'll but I don't feel like putting my career in the hands of the girl who just cracked like that for lowly us.

I rather try and go and get her legitimatized so we can at least dot our I's and cross our T's.

[X] Ask J6 to pull some strings and make it happen.
-[X] Be sure to impress the seriousness of this on Faiza first. If she wants to walk away without becoming a soldier, this is her last chance. If she still wants to go forward, even knowing that she can never really go back to her old life once she does, then have J6 make the request.

We kind of need all the help we can get here.

Joys of royal privilege. If the admiralty want to make a Big Deal out of it they will be directly criticising the princess. Seems like a bad idea for them given the setting.

You seem to misunderstand Ensign North's place in the hierarchy. Shoving decisions upwards is expected and indeed demanded. When the navy wants us to make independent decisions they will promote us to the appropriate pay grade.

I knew this quest was going to be good the second I saw the title.

I was not disappointed.

By far the most stand-out part of the quest has been the construction of the vote options. They are really good at setting up tradeoffs and forcing one to think closely about what's important. I saw you posted elsewhere that you had a nice big plan for the plot of this quest, so I hope to see this trend continue! :)

As for me, even now it's hard to pick between options from a purely meta perspective.

I think I am inclined to trust J6. I do expect that this will probably make its way back to the princess somehow, which may or may not have immediately visible consequences, but nevertheless will likely set something in motion. This could be good or bad. It should be interesting either way.

Say, as far as the situation with Mazlo is concerned, don't military ships keep records of their communications? Like, say, a certain call Ensign North made during the negotiations on that space station?

Anyway.

Okay, but I see very few people voting to shove the decision up to our propped superior, and instead trying to bypass the chain of command so that we're not at risk of getting in trouble. I'm of the opinion that working to make this legitimate, such as through J6 pulling strings, is us making a decision and trying to make that happen. In such a case, let's at least be honest about it.

I like to think we've got a record of the call being made on our data pad communicator device, just waiting to embarrass Mazlo. I know it's not gonna happen, but still.

Right. Kid wants to help. Let's use royal prerogative to make this girl take this situation very seriously.
