[X] Ask J6 to pull some strings and make it happen.
-[X] Be sure to impress the seriousness of this on Faiza first. If she wants to walk away without becoming a soldier, this is her last chance. If she still wants to go forward, even knowing that she can never really go back to her old life once she does, then have J6 make the request.

Lets have a Tally.

Er isn't undermining the authority of the commander of the ship you're a member of by going around them to do something one of the cardinal sins in the military?
Except there's every indication that the non-standard repairs are not the main issue; the main issue is the one who's doing it.
From the perspective of the frustrated technician who looked the other way in regards to regulation the non-standard repairs aren't an issue because they massively reduce her workload, and resolve the danger inherit by a lack of long ranged scanners.

Yet from the pov of Captain Lillian who has to deal with the reality that her ship will more often than not be undermanned, crewed by average* officers, or at least those without the influence to be posted somewhere with more prestige, and has little influence over whether, or not personnel are reassigned** elsewhere when they perform well... it absolutely is a serious concern.

*Cough Mazlo cough.
** A less polite term would be they're being poached by other captains with the influence afforded to them by for their status as members of the nobility.

It is, potentially, an eventual concern, and a reasonable one. It is not, however, indicated as a concern that North has at the moment, nor is it indicated as what North believes would most concern the captain. The Petty Officer doesn't bring it up, the Guardswoman doesn't bring it up, and North doesn't even so much as consider it. Hell, just last update we were considering doing our own personal modifications to the systems while we were running repairs. This is the only objection given by anyone at any point:

"It is illegal for an uncertified civilian to tamper with or alter any part of an Imperial naval vessel without express clearance from the officer commanding," Guardswoman J6 says, simply.

In the long run, these repairs would need to be undone and fixed, but the entire system needs to be heavily repaired anyway, and in ways that we are just not capable of doing until the ship is docked in a military port. I wouldn't be surprised if the concern was noted, but I sincerely doubt it is anywhere near the top of the list of problems the captain or anyone else might have with the repairs.

Desperate times call for desperate measures, but these measures should be above board, or as above board as child conscription can be... which is not all that much, really, but c'est la vie.

Just caught on with the thread, I'm very happy about the story and the choices that were picked until now.

I will vote for the write-in, I don't like the other options's drawbacks.

When you eat poison, you might as well lick the plate and brand the dish spicy.

This kid's definitely becoming a child soldier at some point, but I'd rather not be the ones to do it ourselves.
She is already on a warship, with no real hope of getting off any time soon.
She may as well be a child engineer and improve the odds of anyone surviving rather than… what are the civilians doing with their time?

It's not exactly ethical, but neither is monarchy.

The problem with monarchy isn't ethics. The problem is that there's a single point of failure in the system and succession crises are common. The current civil war that split the solar system in half is neither unusual nor unexpected under a monarchy.

The reason North wouldn't view it as a concern is that she is per word of QM anime character good at her job so she'll never have an issue dealing with work that follows a standard different than regulation given enough time, and more relevantly this is literally her first voyage out of the academy so it isn't something shes ever dealt with. I've already mentioned why the technician wouldn't be overly concerned about it, and J6 merely cares about the Titanium Rose being able to protect the Princess not long-term maintenance in the event that personnel are reassigned. In regards to the option we almost took... they would've been up to standard as a large part of that for the code portion is formatting, and documentation.

Fundamentally the issue with the logic of doing it when the Rose reaches port is even the current repairs require an absurd amount of hours on the part of everyone, and this with a surplus of technicians seconded from the Night Lily, which means it'll never get done as it is very much so a low priority.

Admittedly it is still a far better alternative than going around the commander of the Rose, the XO, and your immediate superior to involve royalty, which will multiply the reputation North gained from making Mazlo look like a fool by "Everything is better with Princesses.".

I think probably it's also fair to say that hereditary aristocracy and monarchy have plenty of very serious moral and ethical problems and that macro level "does the state continue" stuff is not its only issue.

... it's also really cool though so please enjoy this story about The Future in which we all obey a princess with anime hair and there are awesome murder robots.

Just to clarify, I specified the Princess under the assumption that she actually can just conscript a civilian, whereas the Captain doesn't have that power. I also assume that at a bare minimum we would let the Captain know instead of just having the Princess blindside her with this.

And as a practical matter, the Princess probably conscripts Faiza into the crew of the Lily and then seconds her to the Rose, as a way to not be seen as fucking with the chain of command so much.

I just didn't figure I'd have to spell this all out in the actual vote, rather than just keeping the vote focused on the specific decision we're making and not trying to micromanage the implementation.

Let Faiza working, let the crew know her supposed amazing teenage talent that hopefully supported by heavy plot armor!!!

Again-the law is once again obstructing us and I'd rather not let it become a noose around our necks. If she works, then let her work! We've not the strength to keep her out of the fires of war so let her view them firsthand alongside us, so we may cover her eyes and save her from the full horror of war.

Personally I would rather go by the books instead of letting her keep working. But I definitely don't want North to conscript her.

Guys, Yun brought up a good point. By bringing this to the Princess we are going around the chain of command and making all our superiors look bad. Actually hold on @Gazetteer
"It is illegal for an uncertified civilian to tamper with or alter any part of an Imperial naval vessel without express clearance from the officer commanding," Guardswoman J6 says, simply.
For this quote is North considered the officer commanding, or is that someone higher up the chain? Because if it is us, I see no reason at all why we can't just look the other way, no write-in required.
