Beneath Celestial Depths (An Arpeggio of Blue Steel Quest)

[X] Shoot down the Corrosive Torpedo. (30% chance damage to Allies and Blue Steel reputation loss)

Mathematically speaking this is the best choice:
Nuke: 0% chance of No Penalty
Both: 25% chance of No Penalty
Corrosive: 70% chance of No Penalty
So shooting down the Corrosive Torpedo gives us the best chance, by a massive margin, of walking out of this situation with no damage or reputation loss.

Now look at the penalties we face if we flub things:
Nuke: 100% chance of WFA loss
Both: 75% chance of major equipment loss
Corrosive: 30% chance of Blue Steel rep loss
Obviously the worst possible outcome is major equipment loss since we're talking about sinking levels of damage. WFA meanwhile is literally our only defense and it's loss* would leave Surcouf and Mary highly vulnerable going forwards. Loosing reputation with Blue Steel would certainly hurt but we have lots of avenues to restore that and it's not like there aren't other factions we can buddy up with if necessary.

So considering Surcouf is rather mercenary and ultimately in it for herself (and Mary) the most reasonable choice is shooting down the Corrosive Torpedo since it has the best chances of us walking away scott free and even if we do get unlucky it still has the most tolerable penalty.

*I'm assuming anyway that WFA loss means it's actually destroyed like much of our other equipment currently is. If it's just temporarily disabled (IE: "Shields are down!") this calculus changes a lot.

The only thing I would add to that is that there is also the possibility that risking the Blue Steel humans may make Mary upset with us even if we succeed on the roll.

Hmm. Tough choice.

Intercepting the nuke will remove our ONLY defence, which we just got back. But I feel there might be a chance for Blue Steel to reimburse us for taking a fucking corrosive warhead for them; they gave us nanomaterials and have stated they have more but that's far from garunteed.

Gunning for the corrosive ensures we get off fairly unscathed but risks rep with Blue Steel and Mary apparently.

But this is set to insanity. We will be more powerful overall in the endgame, having a super flagship core like we do, but that requires resources that Blue Steel has. In the same vein is it wise to risk our armor for the potential greater payoff? No. All the endgame material in the world won't matter if some random pt boat kills us with a torpedo crit because we neglected early game protections.

Edit: changed vote. Forgot to factor Mary's squishiness.

[X] Shoot down the Nuke. (100% chance loss of Wave Force Armor)

Frankly, if Gunzou doesn't at least help us get our Wave Force Armor back, he's being an idiot and sacrificing potential assistance from a Fog vessel with an active core. And, if he doesn't, I'll be one of the ones voting for telling him that as far as we are concerned he can sit on a corrosive torpedo and spin for all the help he'd get from us.

[X] Try and shoot down both. (25% chance of success, Major Equipment Loss on failure)

well on one hand operation crossroads showed that nukes are bad at sinking ships on the other i don't want to chance Mary getting hit with radiation

Squishy humans are squishy, and we need them alive so they can help fix us

I would like to revote:
[x] Shoot down the Nuke. (100% chance loss of Wave Force Armor

Don't want to lose Mary, she's a squishy that would not take a nuke well at all.

[x] Shoot down the nuke.

It's probably an fusion bomb anyhow, so far more effective than a Crossroads type blast and it'll be a ground burst it went off so Blue Steel would be having to deal with not just the normal detonation effects but the fact that the hulls are 'hot' from fallout. No clue if they have on base the tools to decontaminate the hulls properly without risking contamination in the complex. This is before the issue of the crews getting a rather nasty dose of radiation.

Humans are just so fragile.

And all of that's assuming it isn't some sort of specialized Casaba Howitzer type warhead, designed as a nuclear shaped charge.

Always in favour of the option that doesn't give people radiation poisoning.
