Hmm, as far as battle music is concerned, I find myself leaning more towards something fast paced, but not overwhelming. It's important that the music will be heard and felt, but it can't overtake or distract from the scene. For personal preference, I'm excluding anything that has distracting lyrics or is heavily associated with other piece of media. That means heavy metal is out because of its crashing beat and instruments (would be inappropriate for a MG anime as well). Rock is definitely a possibility, but it's hard to find good ones that don't have prominent lyrics or are heavily associated with one thing or another already.

I dug around through my youtube subscriptions, and submit to you all the appropriately titled One Man Army, by Bausic Productions, as the battle theme.

Well. I slept on the idea, so fuck it. I wanna see it happen.

Edit:

On the topic of appearance, I'd prefer it if we were a sufficiently Good Looking Guy. At least, more good looking than the Canon-Love Interest if only to ignite the audience shipping wars.

Also because it's always useful in case we inadvertently end up attending the same school as the MC because Under Cover plot.

I'm thinking we go bishonin then take some minor steps to distinguish between off and on duty looks. off duty we wear a pair of masculine glasses and wear our hair in a loose low ponytail while on duty we ditch the glasses and use hair clips or something.

if we're lucky the heroine and maybe the audience thinks we're another magical girl until some dramatic reveals that the cute smart boy is actually the Rival.

your appearance is decidedly martial with dark red plates of armor and a black cape swirling behind you, potentially making her suspect a dragon or even perhaps a big bad reveal.

Btw does this work as our combat armor?

A cute playful wink maybe... Peace sign? Wait are we a girl or a boy? I've just been imagining an androgynous smug cutie capable of fitting both kinds of senpai/older sibling type rival role. Sufficient smug goes beyond such things anyway. Also gembutts are amazing love phos.
We're a boy, Lilith-nee.

A peace sign and playful winks have been done before, though. I want our MC to do something a little more daring (but not in the NSFW sense) that Negaverse fans would make fanart based on it. If we want to be smug, then we should leverage our specialty in speed and knowledge of our rival's strength and force her to think of ways to overcome it.

And when she does, we easily slip past that and force her to go back to the drawing board as befitting of our spot as the character with the superior intellect.

Maybe a gentle nose-on-nose boop?

...You realize that reveal might come through us sustaining clothing damage that'll reveal our chiseled physique to the world, right?

Something like that yeah, Ironically enough, I realize now that I've given her a blue colour theming while giving you all red, yet she is very clearly the Red Oni in this Red Oni Blue Oni relationship.

Yes you would need to spend Tolerance points to do this. At this point, you've established yourself as more about dodging and using magic defences. Tanking something to the face will make the audience wonder why you didn't just no sell her previous less powerful attacks the same way.

I'll have some appearance votes at some point soon, but I think bishounen will definitely be an option in light of all of this discourse. I admit, I had originally been thinking that your gender was already out, given the relatively masculine 'armour and cape' image plus the voice (which I usually think of as a dead giveaway in most situations) but... Since a few people seem to want it, I think I'll add an extra vote to this one.

Alright so, while there seem to be some combat ideas, between everything that's been being discussed, people don't really seem to have thrown down very many actually votes yet. Not to mention there are only three actual vote for theme songs.

You are correct in guessing that something faster paced does work better since this is for a comeback, but remember, a theme song can be cut in at any point in the song, so a slow opening is fine since it allows versatility in how/when it is used.

Long story short, I'm going to leave this vote open for a while longer and try to answer questions in the mean time.

Oh, and have an updated version of the theme vote listing all the suggestions so far! (I'm putting some stars next to the ones I particularly like personally but don't read too much into it. Also, I'll probably include most of these for when you guys get to vote on your own theme as well, so don't feel too bummed if you have two or three that you really like and can't choose between them.)

Actually just call it an updated general vote, listing everything that's been talked about.

we have already established magical traps as a thing-wot-we-can-do, doing it in sequence isn't too big of a stretch. besides, gotta keep in theme

i would just rather not, besides, that post only has 2 likes.

[X] [Bishie] No Bishie!

No. Just doesn't fit the 'prepared and analytical' character we are painting. I would imagine our character would be as non-shiny and pragmatic as possible. Complete with a full cover helmet. Because that's a must. The line of work they're in would need them to be of larger mass than your standard Bishie, so it really cannot fit my imagination. I think a build similar to Nightwing or Batman Beyond would work though.

[X] [Theme] Song of the Ancients

Love this theme. At least in the 'slow and dramatic' category. I am aware there are other, more intense and fast-paced themes. Still like this better. It gives a sense of reflection, and a hint of greatness soon to come.

Edit: I checked. Song of the Ancients is different with Battle of the Ancients.

This fits with our character archetype the most compared to the other options. Set our opponent up, wait for the right opportunity, and strike decisively.

In terms of theme music, I'd probably be satisfied with IronDust, Frontier, or One Man Army(Though I much prefer the middle bits after it picks up around 0:56 seconds rather than the beginning), and would join a coalition to vote for those if one in particular.

For now, however, the strongest contender is:

[X] [Theme] IronDust*
