[X] The commoner.

Unexpectedly high cultivation; good learning experience; confidence not unappealing.

Notice that there was no prohibition on theft at any time, so we have to be careful that our roommate doesn't steal from us.

Assuming that Shaohuo doesn't completely botch things he should wind up buddies with his roommate. Partnering up with the shy kid means Shaohuo has to be the bulwark against outside aggression, which he's going to be laughably unqualified to do within a month or so. Partnering up with the commoner means Shaohuo might get some splash aggro from whatever trouble the commoner stirs up, but Shaohuo can actually make himself useful in social situations.

I am positively jealous of Xiaoli's ability to make friends instantly.

I'm torn between the two nobles. I agree the commoner has the potential to be the strongest but I'm not sure how that helps us. We already have a great friendship with Xiaoli and a decent one with Suyin if we need help from someone stronger. The nobles could offer other benefits, and of the two I think the standoffish one will be the hardest to befriend normally. So let's room with him right now and make a connection that way.

Good news, there's a two week period before we have to start fighting for rank, and we have 2 weeks worth of Celestial Lavender. We can still build towards making a good show of it with how close we are to finishing Stone Skin, we either finish Stone Skin and try to gamble on Defense Cultivation, or maybe try and get either the Strength boost or an Offensive Art instead.

My reasoning for not wanting to pick the commoner is that anyone who is acting confident in an unfamiliar place where most of the people outrank him probably has a very aggressive personality; we don't want him to try to dominate us or act like a jerk to us. He might even be biased against nobility.

Sure, rather him than the commoner.

I do think the commoner could help us by being a good sparring partner, or maybe he becomes so good he outshines the rest. But I think I would rather have the connections from a noble, and it would be nice to avoid the talented commoner who gets picked on by nobles but ultimately outstrips them plot, if indeed that's where this is headed. We could be the roommate who defends him, but is that going to make us friends with the other nobles like the Elder wanted? Rather be neutral. Most of this assumes this goes according to trope and Timewinders doesn't go off script. Maybe the commoner gets beat down and finds the harsh reality that he was only a big fish in a small pond before and he gets his confidence beaten out of him repeatedly.

The vote seems to be tied now. I probably won't close the vote until twelve hours from now so there's still time to get your vote in or change your vote.
