Tell The World That We Tried (Battletech CYOA) (Complete)

If I was Asha, I'd hire engineers. Both Civil and Combat, but focusing on Civil. And train those infantry to be civil...
Or technical trainers to spam more techs... OR look into buying J-Edgars and Pikes or like cheap decent tanks, and create tank spam

I'd second the idea of trying to get at least a unit of combat engineers going, so the artillery unit isn't so reliant on existing bridges and ferries and can be set up with a proper fortified position if there's some prep time available. Being able to get to where they can drop shots where you need them and withstand counterbattery fire is the difference between useful arty and a fast leak in the company finances.

One thing that Asha is probably going to happy with that doesn't seem to come up in the Helm raids is the fact that it likely has large amounts of cooling suits. Though I wonder which what SL Mech that she'd try and get for herself?

If available, she should stick with the better Royal Marauder to maintain what skills she has. Especially if there are enough of them for her to be lost in the crowd instead of setting herself up as battlefield assassin bait.

There's really nothing good enough as a super unit to justify ignoring practical concerns.

Anything with DHS. :V

More likely, either an upgraded Marauder so she doesn't have to acclimate to a new machine, or a 4/6 heavy assault Mech that can keep pace with her main force. Star League-era Battlemasters aren't bad, if still heat-hogs, and there's other options like a Thug.

So the infantry she picked up likely has some backyard techs who then turned industrial mechs to a bootleg mech force.

Any chance she gets some industrial exoskeletons and has them weld on armor and a support weapon to make bootleg powered armor for close in support or intimidation?

All else fails they can also carry a shield in offhand for portable cover.

Given that she has Phantom Mech she should probably make sure it's an unseen :p

It's funny, given that she now commands seven regiments, she technically has an RCT equivalent, albeit an extremely unbalanced one.

Ehh...not really? She's short a two Mech battalions and at least one of armor, RCTs have a full regiment of each.

The only thing she's actually got is the Infantry, she's below minimum levels on everything else, including aerospace.

It's not even technically. If that was enough, you could call any Mech battalion with attached armor and infantry (which is pretty common) an RCT.

They don't.
I guess smilies don't help convey jokes anymore. Also, if you look at an SLDF RCT, it only needs 4 combat regiments :p (though admittedly I think those regiments are supposed to be combined arms or mech-centric).

The most common passenger liner dropship in the Inner Sphere has 266 individual cabins, each allotted the same mass and presumably volume as a seven-person infantry squad cubicle; three of them would do the job, or similar spaces installed in the cargo bay of something like two Mules.

Uh? If you are talking about a Monarch.... its only 200 cabins + crew.

Mech Regiment, 3 Armor Regiment, 5 Infantry Regiment + ASF + Arty.

More like 2-5 Mech Battalions, 1-4 Armor Regiments, 3-6 Infantry regiments, 1-6 ASF Wings, 1-3 Artillery Battalions.

Because it's always something-or-other when you look closely.

Its typically 1/3/5/2/1 respectively... but well, AFFS is a bit like the Brits in that there is constantly exceptions, weird alternate traditions, battlefield losses, etc etc.

The FedCom Corps and Lyran RCTs all pretty much adhered to the usual ratio because they were newly established.

Depends on era, I guess, since fluff says the Princess was more common than the Monarch prior to the Succession Wars, but the Princess is also 200 passengers anyway.

More broadly speaking, BT doesn't really give us much canon stuff for non-military bulk personnel transport, and even the options for shifting people under military conditions are limited... the published canon ships over the years have focused on 'Mech or combined arms transports, we don't hear as much about hauling infantry around.

As has been noted in this thread already, chartering a Mule or something would certainly be enough space/volume, but life support might be a concern. My headcanon is that, in-universe, there must be solutions to these problems, i.e. Inner Sphere natives do know damn well how to quickly set up a Mule for hauling people and ensuring they don't suffocate along the way.

Also each quarters on a dropship takes up as much room an infantry platoon bay... the catch is the extra weight is all the efficient life-support systems.

Exactly. The Mule, meanwhile, is well suited to carrying mass, but I have a hard time believing that it has enough, and sufficiently usefully-arranged, space for all those accommodations - and the Monarch has enough cargo room, especially since you actually end up with surplus cabins that can be filled with oxygen tanks, to make up for having to run its life support systems in a less efficient mode.

The Medical department shown is sized for the ~1,000 strong outfit the Blackwings were before they added the Fiannese and plans were drawn up to expand it, but not yet carried out given Dr. Tiber's strict recruiting standards for his department. Hero of Canton, Badajoz, and War Horse are all regular LCAF units. Dodo's Revenge is a mercenary ship out of Galatea. All four of the superfreighters are ordinary commercial haulers that were shortstopped out of the Fianna-to-Hesperus run. Regina McQuiston is leased to the Blackwings from a civilian passenger line, and has been refitted for troop carry - a fairly straightforward process that will be easily reversed at the end of her contract. Jumping G. Hoshaphat is a family-owned tramp freighter, hired ditto.

A mule dropship has an internal volume of over 2 million cubic meters.

Assuming even 2% of the ships volume is devoted to crew space, with an average vertical of 3 meters, you still have over 13,333 square meters of personnel space. it has a crew of 20. Thats 666 square meters of space per person on average. or about the space of a small mansion. more than 7100 square feet per person for us Americans. The average home size in America is 2,687 square feet.

Personnel space should NEVER be an issue on BT dropships. There is so much space its crazy. BT dropships are gigantic, paper shelled balloons. They have so much internal volume they are like Giant apartment buildings in size. Every damned person on the ship should have their own set of multi-room suites.

A Virginia Class nuclear submarine has an internal volume of around 8600 cubic meters, with a compliment of 135 people. literally .4% of the internal space of a Mule dropship, with more than 6 times as many people.

A mule designed to carry lots of people in addition to its cargo finds its limitation not in internal space, but in mass for life support. You will run out of mass budget WELL before your run out of space.

EDIT:
400 cabins at 5 tons each is 2000 tons, but giving them a very generous 100 square meters per person on average (including common areas) only takes up 6% of the ships volume.

Woulda gone for the Jumbo as the cargo carrier. A lot bigger than the Mule & might even be more common. The DroST IIa & IIb are also good designs to look into for vehicle/infantry/asf carriers. Both are centuries-old designs that are innumerably cloned & ply the space ways. They're the YT-1300 freighters of the Inner Sphere.

While I appreciate the detail and calculations, my fundamental attitude on this matter is...

If the official numbers return results that equal Weberfoam, the official numbers are wrong.
so you are thinking the Mule would be more like 50 meters wide rather than the canon 158? I personally prefer such rational numbers, but there are a lot of people who flip out if you question such things on this forum.

I basically throw out a lot of canon measurements to make sense of things. especially aerospace numbers. in my head, warships/jumpships are significantly smaller in size, and they are mostly made our of Internal Structure and Armor. KF drives are more like 10% of the warships mass, and Armor and IS more like 50-60%. That 1,000,000 ton warship is sporting something like 300,000 tons of armor.

regular jumpships use cores more like a canon warship, and they too mount thousands of tons of armor. not that even thousands of tons means much on such a large ship.

Its the only way to give it enough armor that a handgun wouldn't be able to punch through it...
