86 is a recent anime series based on a light novel with a vaguely similar premise following a similarly elite squad of robot pilots against an out of control ai robot army. More spider robots than straight humanoid mecha. Though there is a fair bit more to it than just that. It is quite good, and one of the only adaptations I have seen that spends a whole cour on a single volume.
