Clockwork Ruler: A Tour of Featherdale [Afternoon - 2/4]

"Hey." you greet, patiently.

Jojo starts, then turns to you. Only now does he notice the empty classroom and begins hastily arranging his things. There's a slight embarrassed tinge to his face that almost makes you giggle. You would have too, if it weren't for the dire reasons behind his tardiness.

"H-Hello Thana." Jojo says, clearing his throat. "I, um, apologize for keeping you from lunch. You must be hungry, and recess does last very long, so-"

He moves to speed walk away. You grab his wrist before he gets out of reach. He stills, looking at your hand and then meeting your eyes. You smile, patient and gentle.

"Looks like you forgot the tour of Featherdale I promised you yesterday." you say. "I get the circumstances and I know you're all for brooding in some dark corner for the rest of the day, but yo can do it later. Right now, I'm going to give you a tour of the place. And then maybe a tour around town later, if you're up for it. I can even bring my friends along if you want, or it could just be us."

He blinks at you in dumbfounded surprise. You keep your grip on him firm to keep him from pulling away.

"...But... But I am--" he starts.

"But nothing." you cut him off. "Our homeroom teacher gave me a job, and like it or not, I'm not the kind of person to skirt around duties. Besides," your smiles turns a little sad. "It's something to help take our minds off of last night, at least."

A long moment of silence passes, spent staring at each other's eyes. You let go of his wrist, half-expecting him to bolt out the door the moment your hand hits your side. To your pleasant surprise, he stays in one place and closes his eyes. He takes a few deep breaths, and nods firmly.

His eyes open again, and you see a spark of hope in them. His smile is tentative and small, but it's better than nothing.

"Alright. I did make you promise, so it is only fair." he chuckles.

"Atta boy." You smile back, the sadness gone for the moment as you focus on the now. "Let's put our books away first, though. It gets tiring carrying them after a while."

"Very well. Shall we stop by your locker first, then?" Jojo moves aside and gestures to the door with a flourish. "Ladies first, and all."

"I thank you for your consideration, sir." you curtsy and march purposely out the door, Jojo trailing close behind. You both laugh then continue on. "But seriously, lets put our stuff away. It'll make the tour much more comfortable."

"As you say." Jojo agrees. He shoots a skeptical look at his books. "I find it peculiar that education still uses paper and ink, even now. The last two and a half centuries have have changed anything much, it would seem."

"Things are changing, but slowly. Smartphones and touchscreen tech for example." you reach your locker first and you proceed to put your things away. "They're in the prototype stages, so its only a matter of time before they're introduced commercially."

"I have seen examples of both." Jojo agrees, leading you to his locker. "It is almost frightening how quickly technology can develop, really. Less than a hundred years ago, the concept of digital computing was almost unheard of. Now, such things are available at the tip of one's fingers."

"Necessity and the desire for comfort are driving forces in technological innovation and invention." you point out as Jojo arrives at his locker. "Would you believe that early humans learned how to cook because it made meat taste better?"

"I suppose." Jojo stores his things and turns to you. "Now, where will your tour begin?"

"Hmm, well..." you think. "You've likely already been to the staff lounge and know your way to the cafeteria. Oscar and Liz took you strolling outside and back..." you shrug. "All that's left now are the more prominent locales in Featherdale and introducing you to the clubs in Featherdale. Right now, there're only five official active academic clubs and four active sports clubs."

"Official?" Jojo blinks. "Wait. Are there more clubs in the school?"

"Loads. They're unofficial because they don't have a supervisory teacher to oversee their activities and so on." you lean in and whisper conspiratorially. "But between you and me, I think none of them know how to convince worth a damn."

Jojo chokes on his spit and you giggle mischievously.

"A-Are you part of any clubs?" he asks, once he's recovered.

"Nope. I'm an honorary member and almost all of 'em, though honestly, I think they just did that because of who my sister is." you look him over. "By the way, has anyone approached you with membership offers to any of the official clubs yet?"

"Um..." he blinks. "Yes, quite a few as well. How did you know?"

"Eh, the official clubs are always looking for new members." you shrug. "Not hard to guess." you quirk a half-smile. "Now then, you ready for the Featherdale High School tour?"

"As I ever will be." Jojo nods. "Where is our first stop?"

Since we're talking tech, might as well, right?

Let's save the most scenic spot (rooftop) for later, maybe this afternoon when the sun begins to set? That would be nice.

[x] The Rooftop

The fabled location straight out of legends! The favored lunch place of all protagonists! The stage to all the school DRAMAs and SQUEEEEEs!

Let's go and feel ourselves the kings of all we survey!

Well, we could use it for a big finish, I suppose, but setting the right tone from the beginning has its perks.

This is the third update our invisitext buddy has not appeared in...And the last time it showed up was here:
Alright, that's it. Time for some help
Random Encounter Roll
Did it summon Proodmore and then get exhausted or something?

Mainly because I want to see the reasoning behind a school having an archery range.

I don't really see why a school would need a reason to have an archery range? I went to a public high school that had dedicated tennis courts. While it didn't have a dedicated archery range, they had an archery class and set up targets in the gym for it. It wasn't exactly a well-funded school, either, so it doesn't seem that unlikely.

I've just never seen a school with a purpose built archery range outside of Japanese media. I was wondering how a seemingly Western school came about having one.

Some colleges have archery ranges (some even indoor ones), and if there is enough interest, setting one up on school grounds as a part of a club is hardly a concern. The tricky part is get enough people who would care, but I've seen more niche clubs out there.

As for a western school... to me the quest setting looks as anime as it gets without resorting to honorifics.

I wouldnt have thought you would get many places in Japan called Rockefeller, or schools like Thana's called West-whatever-it-is. Nor are the names of the characters particularly Japanese in any way.

Clockwork Ruler: Touring the Academic Clubs [Afternoon - 2/4]
[] The Electronic Media rooms

As you lead your charge to the first stop of the tour, the Academic Club building, you give him a brief overview of Featherdale High's history.

The school itself was opened sometime in the early 1980's, and has since undergone multiple renovations and property expansions. The latest was completed five years to include another wing to the school, one specifically used to house the various academic clubs that would inevitably spring up.

The Club wing consisted of a two storey tall building with twenty rooms, ten on each floor. Each room could fit around thirty people, and was utilitarian by design for whichever club claims it. So far, the oldest running academic clubs are the Young Librarians Society, the Astronomy Enthusiasts, and the Chemical Concoctionists. Jojo inquired about the Astronomy Enthusiasts, but you persuaded him otherwise with simple facts.

The first club was home to quiet readers and mostly nerd who took advantage of the library's fast Wi-Fi, the second was full of tinfoil hat conspiracy theorists and people with an obsessions for aliens, while the last was made up of people who'd record various epic-looking chemical reactions and upload the videos into their Youtube accounts.

You and him exchange disappointed nods as you approach the Club wing. It was mostly quiet at the moment, but you can make out a handful of people doing... whatever it is they're doing through the building's windows.
Ugh, stupid... How much did I miss?
The building was somewhat empty, though there are a handful of the more dedicated club students cleaning their clubrooms or moving items about to prepare for any afternoon club activities. Most of them stop and stare after you and Jojo as you lead your charge through the building.
Ooh, have they gone out on a date? So soon?
"So, the entire wing is split into two floors and each floor has ten club rooms and one set of restrooms. Due to the number of unofficial clubs here, multiple clubs have to share a single room. Like this one." you stop before a particular door. "The School Newspaper club, the Nature Appreciation cub, and the Environmental Preservation club share this one room here, and there's rumors that they'll be accepting a fourth club inside."
Oh pooh, she's just giving him a tour
"The interior looks to be a bit... sparse." Jojo comments, peering through the viewport on the door.

"They spend most of their club funds getting paper. They all use it in some form or another; the School Newspaper uses it to print out the latest school happenings, the Nature Appreciation club uses it to spread fliers and 'increase awareness' for all the good it does, and the Environmental Preservation club uses it for..." you think. "Huh. Now that you mention it, I don't actually know. Probably for posters or something."

"Hm." Jojo nods, seemingly distracted by something.

"Anyway, c'mon. Lets head upstairs." you lead him away. "There's something I wanna show you."

"Oh?" Jojo smiles slightly. "What is it?"

"The Electronic Media rooms. They're run by the Electronic Media club and it's main reason why I brought you here in the first place." The two of you clear the stairs and walk down the first floor hallway. "Little known fact; that club is the only one composed mostly of female members."

A look of horror and dread makes itself known on Jojo's face and he shifts his feet as though to make a run for it. You roll your eyes and grab a hold of his wrist before he can flee.

"Oh, relax, the girl part of the club only number up to three freshmen and the fourth, and only male, member is a friend of my sister's. You might know him; wears glasses and is a fit nerd. Name's Adam." you explain as you tug him to the club room door. "Nowadays, the entire club's been turned into a lazy people refuge and it doesn't do much of anything."

The door opens and a girl storms out, pointing a finger at you.

"That's a lie! You take that back!"

"Oh really?" you smirk. "Then name one thing you've done since you've reformed the club."

"We fixed the intercom system that one time! And we got the static out of the auditorium speakers!" the girl s. "Then there was the time we--"

"Jesus Isabelle, calm your tits!" a second girl walks out and conks the first one on the head. "It's just Loering, nothing to start yelling about." she nods in your direction. "Hey, Thana. What're you doin' here?" her eyes drift over to Jojo and they take on a predatory glint. "And who's the hunk?"

Jojo whimpers. You roll your eyes, grip on of his shoulders, and force him to your side.

"Keep it in your pants girl. Remember you got a boyfriend." you say. "And this hunk here is Jonathan Jobston. You've probably heard of him here and there as the new transfer student."

"Oh, him!" the first girl, Isabelle, nods in recognition.

"Lemme guess, you giving him a tour of the place?" the second girl quirks a knowing brow. You nod and she nods back, her suspicions confirmed. "A'ight. You picked this place as your first stop, huh? Really generous of you."

"You're welcome." you grin back.

"Well, come on in. We were just running a quick system check, so it'll be good exposure for him." The two club members disappear behind the door, and you tug Jojo with you into the club room itself.

The two currently present members of the club give you and Jojo (but mainly Jojo) a tour of their facilities and a brief rundown of their club. They shared the rooms with a whopping five other clubs. You don't particularly remember their names, though you're sure at least one of the them were focused on animation and used it as an excuse to watch Japanese animes.

It was among the more popular clubs formed, being fortunate enough to have Adam Lannister as one of its members. The boy was loaded enough to practically fund the entire club himself, and still have enough to splurge.

The only possible reason why you think Adam would spend so much was because Vivian once tried to get permission to commandeer one of the unused classrooms and turn it into a sort-of hangout for her clique. It was denied, of course, but then Adam promised he'd find an alternative. And lo, he practically bought out the Electronic Media club and turned it into the crew's hangout.

He occasionally holds LAN parties here on weekends, and hosts the rare Counter Strike or DOTA 2 tournaments. Most of the time, he lets the faculty use it for the occasional educational video for the classes they teach. Fringe benefits to having Vivian as your twin, you suppose.

The club room interior is carpeted and chilly, the walls painted a dark blue while the ceiling is a crisp white. There are eight large tables, each housing five desktop computers. Leaning up against the far wall is a refrigerator bearing the Coca-Cola logo and houses an ungodly number of gassy drinks. Next to it is a cabinet containing an electric kettel and an assortment of snacks that range from sweets to candy bars to chips to even cup noodles. Beside that is a door that leads to the next room, which has been converted into a micro theater.
behold, the power of money!
"How on earth--" Jojo starts, gawking stupidly at the display of wealth laid before his eyes.

"Adam Lannister. Loaded pockets. Lots of connections." the club member not named Isabelle clarifies. "It's honestly scary how well-connected he is, but then it was his cash that bought everything so I'm not complaining."
Wait, Lannister? Why does that sound familiar...?
"Any club activities after school?" you ask not-Isabelle while said girl continues explaining stuff to Jojo.
Probably nothing
"There's a meeting I think. Adam's calling everyone for something, and he sent me and Belle to make sure the computers won't fuck up in the middle of it."

"Did he mention what the meeting's about?"

"Hmm..." not-Isabelle thinks for a moment, scratching her temple. "No, but he did mention something about your sister, Vivian."

You hum noncommittally as you walk around the room. Something involving Vivian... You sigh. It had Joshua's name written all over it, you're sure.

The tour culminates in a short three minute video showing the club and their accomplishments. Jojo watches, and you catch a spark on interest in is gaze as the video shows the club's former members in their pre-graduation days hiking through the Rockafeller forest. Something to note, for sure. Maybe he's a more outdoorsy person?

"Welp, that's about it." Isabelle says once the video ends. "We're a little short on members at the moment, if only because our club leader's looking for people who're genuinely interested in electronic media and not just wanting to take advantage of our fast Wi-Fi speed."

"Your club leader sounds like a good man with a vision to achieve." Jojo nods. "I will most certainly consider joining, most definitely, but..."

"I get it, it's not really your thing." Isabelle smiles without a hint of contempt. "No biggie. Plenty of people say the same thing. You're still welcome back any time, though!"

"Thank you." Jojo extends a hand and Isabelle takes it into hers. "I will be sure to visit every now and then."

You and not-Isabelle exchange grins at the sight of a reddening Isabelle and a nervous Jojo. You were going to tease your respective friends senseless for this...

"Well, that about sums things up in the Electronic Media rooms." you announce and catch Jojo's attention. "But there's still more stops on the Featherdale High tour, and we're burning through recess time as it is. let's get going."

"Of course." Jojo nods and inclines his head at the other two girls. "Have a nice day, both of you.
...!
While the two clubbies coo at Jojo's thoughtfulness, you lead him to the door. But before you could reach the knob, it opens and a person bumps into you. You stumble back into Jojo, who steadies you easily enough for you to get an eyeful of who ran into you.
Wait, is this--
"Watch where you're going, bitch." the other person, a girl, snarls.
...Oho.
"Whoa there, no need to swear." you hold up your hands. Geez, what's gotten her panties in a twist? "We were just leaving, right Jojo?"
This world is full of surprises, isn't it?
The rude girl looks at your friend and you catch her eyes widen imperceptibly. You also feel Jojo still for a long moment, before he takes a deep breath and pushes you forward.

"Right. Excuse us." he says, and leads you out. He turns to you, all smiles. "Where to next?"

Sorry, Muted Voice In Our Head, but we don't date vampires. Hopefully. I don't know if I could stomach being a heroine in a Twilight fic.

Hooking him up with our friends is fair game, though.

I like Thana's attitude towards people. Who needs to know them by name when you can just call them Isablelle, not-Isabelle and Adam?
