"You guys ready?" says Diavel, eyes never leaving the monstrous form of the slowly approaching Lord. "Okay then. Let's do this."

And with that, the blue-haired raid leader charges, a warcry leaving his lips as he moves to engage Illfang. A split second behind him is the rest of the twenty-nine players, many following his lead and echoing shouts of their own.

The Kobold Lord's burning eyes narrow.

"GRAAAAAAOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRRR!" it roars in return, vibrating the very air and causing stone chips to fall from the ceiling far above. Its slow walk immediately shifts into a sprint, the ground shaking with each of its colossal footfalls.

Right behind it, the Sentinel's scream in vicious anger and follow.

And with that, the fight truly begins, the two sides crashing into each other in a frenzy of steel and adrenaline. In the ensuing chaos, you and Heathcliff find yourselves standing in front of a mace-wielding Kobold Sentinel.

Not giving even a second to prepare, the Sentinel rushes towards you. Narrowing your eyes at the obvious attack, your feet shift slightly and hunch down behind your shield.

A few feet before it reaches you, the Sentinel bends its knees to take a massive leap into the air. A furious hiss emanates from behind its helmet. Lifting its mace high into the sky and coming down with bone-crushing force, the weapon tracing a brilliant blue arc through the air.

You frantically try to readjust your positioning, all the while knowing you would be a hair too late.

Just as the monster is coming down from the apex of its jump, seconds before it smashes into your unshielded body, you blink and suddenly find yourself staring at the back of someone's armor.

The full force of the Sentinel's Art comes down on an unguarded Heathcliff, who is using his body to block the blow as best he can, not having enough time to bring up his shield.

The gruesome crunching of metal reaches your ears. Quickly moving out from behind your party member, your stomach heaves at the horrifically caved-in shoulder Heathcliff now sports, his shield arm now dangling limply at his side.

"Holy shit..." you whisper.

Yet the pixelated chunk missing from his body doesn't stop the Heathcliff at all. Letting out a muffled shout of both anger and pain, the man swings his sword in a massive blue arc right at the monster.

It seems surprised at the retaliation, reacting too late and getting a large red gash rent across its armored chest.

Not wanting to waste this chance, you too attack from out of the range of the Sentinel. A <Spear Thrust> is let loose, puncturing a deep hole in the Sentinel's shoulder.

Heathcliff takes 80 x 2 = 160 damage!
Heathcliff's shield arm is currently crippled! He can no longer use Shield Arts!

The Ruin Kobold Sentinel takes 23 damage from Heathcliff and 23 damage from Honda!

You try your best to blot out the shouts and screams echoing all around, knowing that any distractions from the Sentinel in front of you would lead to only ruin.

"Honda! Switch out! Now!" Heathcliff grits out, immediately pushing backward off his front foot to dodge a brutal uppercut from the Kobold's mace.

"Got it!"

You sprint forward past the retreating man, letting your forward momentum take your spear straight into the monster's abdomen.

Wretching out your spear, there is a blue flash, and your spear is thrown out in two lightning-fast jabs. A heartbeat passes, suddenly the Kobold now sports three new punctures in its armor.

The Ruin Kobold Sentinel takes 41 damage from Honda!

Out of the corner of your eye, a player screams in pain as he is ripped apart by Illfang's ax, rent in twain from shoulder to hip before he could retreat. All three parties on Illfang pause for a second, before continuing their attack with increased vigor.

You force the horror and revulsion down. That could come later. Right now you had to survive.

While you do your best to keep the Sentinel busy, Heathcliff drinks a potion behind you.

The monster darts closer, wildly lashing out with its mace. The blow crashes straight into your waiting shield, your arms crying out in protest at the sheer strength of the blow.

You are pushed back a couple of feet, almost straight into the healing Heathcliff. Digging your feet into the ground, you stop sliding just short of bowling him over.

"Almost ready. A few more seconds at most," calls out Heathcliff from behind you.

You don't bother to respond, instead raising your shield to prepare for the next blow.

The Sentinel lets out an ear-piercing screech, raising its mace high above its head. Your eyes widen in shock when the metal head of the weapon starts glowing red hot, quickly lighting into a deep scarlet fire that engulfs the entire head of the mace.

It then charges at you, going for a low sweep at your legs.

You try to get out of the way of this attack, third-degree burns did not sound like your idea of a fun time. Shifting your positioning, you almost dodge out of the way of the incoming swing.

It catches you right in the side of the knee, causing your right leg to crumple almost instantly. You fall to your knees, but not before launching an uncontrolled <Spear Thrust> in the Sentinel's general direction.

By some random chance, the attack connects. The Kobold squeals in pain, its body littered with red lines and spear holes.

As you quickly struggle to your feet, you are blindsided by a mace straight to the jaw. Your head snaps back as you are thrown backward by the very same Art that had crippled Heathcliff.

"Switch!" you faintly hear over the ringing in your ears, Heathcliff pushing his way past you to get in the way of a devastatingly strong blow from the Sentinel's mace. He lets out a grunt as he takes the attack head-on, but stays rigid in his stance in front of you.

Heathcliff slashes at the Sentinel with all his might, but he is still off-balance from the damage he just received, and the Kobold easily dances out of the way.

You shakily try to stand back up, seeing that the Sentinel's health bar was almost gone. A weak grip on your spear, you release a just recharged <Multithrust>, hoping to kill the monster before it could do any more harm.

But it is for naught, you are too dizzy and both your attacks go wide. Even worse, you overextend your blows in your hurry and are knocked off your feet once again.

Gingerly holding your head and clambering to your feet, you watch as the Sentinel rushes Heathcliff.

As the monster brings the full force of the weapon down at your party member's head, Heathcliff shifts to the side and lets the blow swing harmlessly past his face.

The kobold is now very off-balance, giving him ample opportunity to stab the monster straight through the chest, finally killing it.

The Sentinel takes 16 damage from Heathcliff!

The Sentinel is now dead!

Honda survives the battle with 363 HP!

- - - - -

You feel like complete shit, but you force yourself to turn and to look at the rest of the battlefield anyways. Your heart sinks as you do a frantic headcount. There were… definitely less than 29 players now.

You take a deep breath. Not now. Focus.

Heathcliff comes to stand by your side as you look over the battlefield.

To your left, Illfang actually looks handled, surrounded on all sides by players. Diavel is leading a force at the front, Agil is flanking the left, and the other dude the right. You bitterly note that three people are missing from the formation.

Shaking your head, you look to your right. The final Sentinel is there, the second-to-last one having just being killed by that blacked haired dude and cloaked person.

The three-member party that is fighting the last Sentinel seems to have it on lockdown, but more help never hurt right? You almost take a step towards that direction, only to stop in your tracks at the events unfolding on your left.

"grahahahah..." chuckles a harsh voice."GRAhAHAHAhaHAHAaha!"

Illfang has dashed backward away from the players, until it is now standing next to one of the pillars. Most of its considerable health bar is gone, yet instead of doing anything, it is just standing there. Standing there and laughing.

Diavel motions for everyone to back off, a confused look on his face.

Growing louder by the second, it laughs. "GrAHAHAHAhahHAAHAhAHaHA!"

When the laugh reaches a fever pitch, sounding more like the raving of a mad animal than anything else, it suddenly trails off.

"HaAHahA..."

Diavel, seeming to grow impatient by the second, charges at the monster, his weapon glowing blue.

In a split second, Illfang's entire demeanor shifts. All traces of mad rage that had been broiling just seem to vanish, replaced by calm self-assurance.

The torches lining the walls dim, clearly showing how the blood-red glow that had been shining within the monster's eyes fades, leaving behind ghostly white eyes that trace afterimages in the air.

No longer smiling, its ax is raised high… and then dropped to the ground, embedding itself in the stone.

With a serene look on its face, a clawed foot is raised high into the air, before being brought down with extreme force. Instantly, hairline fractures begin spreading out from the epicenter. Diavel nears the monster, his sword raised.
The end is come.
All is quiet for a moment.
The time is nigh.
The entire floor erupts upwards.
The Hopeslayer Awakens.
It charges.

Chunks of stone and masonry discharge into the air, and the floor itself fractures into countless uneven pieces. Many players are knocked off their feet and smash into the walls or columns, you included. Your head, already battered by the Sentinel beforehand, is slammed directly into one of the obsidian pillars.

Honda takes 19 damage from Illfang's floor smash!

Black clouds your vision, and when you eventually regain enough of your senses, you lift your head up to see hell itself.

The monster is rampaging across the destroyed room, wrecking everything in its path. A player who had just risen to their feet is unceremoniously slapped to the side by a monstrous arm, crashing through a pillar and falling to the ground, unmoving.

Heathcliff is shakily climbing to his feet nearby.

Another player is grabbed by the arm, and the monster squeezes. A scream is ripped from the player's lips as her arm is crushed to paste, before being tossed aside like a broken doll.

Diavel is lost somewhere in the rubble, hidden from sight. Kiabou is shoving a health potion down someone's throat, shouting at people to help him get the injured to safety.

The monster's whiplike tail smashes through a pillar, raining down dust and rock upon you all.

A battered Agil is trying to rally the players, and failing miserably as everyone panics. The cloaked person is lying groaning against a wall some distance away from him, their hands quivering as they reach for a potion.

People are starting to retreat, stumbling as far away as Illfang as they can.

You blink away the dust in the air to see Illfang start towards a player who had been knocked far away from everyone else. It's the black-haired guy, who is just now starting to regain his bearings.

MWAHAHAHA I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS.

You should note, the way flanking works has been tweaked a bit. I don't remember who mentioned it, but after the House Spider quest, someone mentioned it looked like flanking meant literally everything in a fight, since it gave straight advantage to the flanker (a pretty crazy bonus all things considered). The problem is, I don't want every fight to just turn into "flank it and then just wail on it until it dies", especially against solo bosses. So now, flanking provides a +2 to hit per extra flanker (up to a limit ofc) instead of immediate advantage. Hope that's alright with you guys.

This is how switching works currently: whoever wants to switch (can be front or back) has to roll a 1d20 + the DEX of both switchers. If it succeeds (over 10 + opponents DEX + other modifiers), the person who has switched to the front gets a free attack on the monster. On the other hand, if it fails, the monster gets a free attack on the player who has switched to the front.

Thoughts on both?

Tanking THAT isn't going to last more than two rounds with luck

The rolls were not in our favor for this fight.

Either Honda or Kirito is gonna be get the cape at this rate. Fleeing would most likely cripple [HOPE] and future fights would have a wayy lower turnout.

If the RNG gods shows pity to us mortals its going to be either The Black Swordsman or The Lucky Newbie who gets the cape.

Finish the job

That sentinel was insane. Nearly rolled max damage most of the time, crit on sentinel art too.
In any case, this doesn't seem as bad as it does imo, we still have 26 (or 25 now) players. Even if some are crippled, we have quite the numbers advantage over him, with all sentinels dealt with.
Ilfang also seems to be targeting Kirito, who should have a decent chance to dodge if he's even a bit similar to canon.
Now, Ilfang has a whopping +16 to hit and +38 to damage. Since crits are only from nat 20, we should be fine for a single round of taking complete damage. However, I don't think it'll come to that too much, as he has 26 targets in front of him. However however, we are all scattered and the terrain has us at a disadvantage, it will be very hard to surround him. We must limit Ilfang's mobility, which is the biggest advantage he has: not being surrounded.
We should go for the legs. It's pointless to run away since he seems so fast and we are actually close to killing him. I'm not sure how to convey a message that would make people stop running away (damn you Agil for crit failing that job!). Here's a proto plan:
[X][Plan] Proto
[X][Hope] Shout "He's too fast, go for his legs!"
Ask Heathcliff how should we surround him. Then go follow his plan.

Can someone explain me if this "hope dies" stuff is just an ordinary moral hit after a crushing defeat? Or boss' title is more than a fancy name?

[ 1d20 + 6(STR) + 3(Legendary) = 20 ] #Sentinel Art Attacking Honda (???)

Honestly, at this rate we don't even need to bother with armor. AC increases are basically worthless with the bonuses these enemies have. If it doesn't get you damage reductionn it's useless. It's just the supporting unit of the boss fight and it can hit us way too reliably. This just shows what I HATE about the system in use. It makes armor feel worse than useless when it really matters.

Admittedly, I hate AC as a system whenever it comes up, but this game is a prime example of its worst faults. It's really not meant to be used with this big of modifiers.

A fight like this should be one where if you've put in the effort to get good equipment it should show some benefit. But since all armor does under the current system outside of special stuff like our shield is negligibly increase AC and eliminating the dexterity mod it's pointless for fights like this.

Mechanics wise a pure dex build is best. It admittedly struggles early on, but by the time you're at level 16, you're at 45 Dex with a +22 dex mod (we're getting +3 points every level as far as I can tell), so with basic leather armor of AC 11 you have a combined AC of 33. Even though we'd probably be on Floor 2 by then we're still at a dex mod of +20 so a combined AC of 31. And if you use a weapon that also rolls for damage with Dex, you're basically God.

Dex is the God Stat and Hindsight is 20/20.

Even without that we've kinda fucked ourselves by using a weapon that needs dex to hit and strength for our damage though. After this fight we need to pick up something that lets us use our strength mod for both. Probably have to drop the spear, but I'm more than fine with that to unfuck our build at this point.

Edit: Seriously, all we have to do to win is powerlevel a Level 1 with a pure dex build. Then they can just go cheese the game for us. Maybe we could choose to speed things up by making multiple of those guys. They might have to pause sometimes to raise their CON in case there are cases where they take guaranteed damage, or if they need to raise their strength to use stronger weapons, but outside of that nothing could stop pure DEX without making everything else worthless.

Edit 2: It also makes switching perfect. Since there isn't an established rule on how often you can switch, you just switch it up every turn getting free attacks all the time with absolutely no consequences since your DEX mods cheese the enemy

Edit 3: Fuck, just realized that a pure DEX level 5 has a greater AC than us. Our build just isn't fucking viable for clearing past Floor One since trying to keep up with the escalation of a DEX build is impossible.

You've noticed it to huh? Even I can see that current 'system' is pretty garbage in terms of balance and stuff. If anyone has any ideas on how to fix it, that'd be great.

Otherwise, after the first floor is cleared, I'll be going on a bit of a hiatus to try to figure out a better way to handle things.

Thanks for your help and patience!

Maybe seperate the dex AC into a different mechanic. Have AC be what it says, Armor Class, how tough something is, and make the dex side of it a skill check that's rolled for.

Example: Kobold Attacks, rolls a 12, our AC of 16 is higher and thus nullifies the attack wholesale. Kobold then rolls a 17 to hit, its higher than our AC so the attack is viable so now we need to roll to avoid the attack rolling a d20 plus our Dex Mod. If we roll an 18 or higher then we avoid the attack.

Better yet you could have each stat have its own defense mechanic. Con for AC where ... I don't know, every 5 points in Con gives a +1 to AC. Dex for Avoid where we roll a d20 plus our Dex Mod to Avoid the attack if it gets through our AC. And for Str we could have Block which would mechanically be the same thing as Avoid but with strength instead of dexterity. Maybe for Block have the Str Mod be whole when using a Shield and halved when trying to do it with just a weapon.

Edit: Maybe have AC as straight Damage Reduction and use Avoid and Block to see if an attack actually lands.

While I know it's not good for the quest from a gameplay perspective wasn't it one of the points of the first season that the combat was broken and could be exploited? I mean there was that time Kirto just stood there and let a bunch of people stab him repeatedly but since his recovery was so high it was impossible to kill him.
