On the Wings of an Eagle [Re-Write]

I am excited to see this thing update.

Less so to see that I'll have to wait another chapter for the staple of most FoZ fanfics: the obligatory Guiche curbstomp. Barring direct rehashes, those seldom get old. Even moreso since we've got an already skilled combatant, and a markedly skilled author directing the fight.

Also, can I just say that it's surprising for me to hear of an author who does research for a fanfic? Not that it's bad or anything(Why would it be?), I'm just used to thinking of authors as writing off the top of their head, generally using only the wiki as a resource if anything.

Yeah, that's fairly typical when it comes to fanfic.

@Fernandel's more the exception to the rule by the look of things.

Which is, uh, a good thing. :V

Harry Potter - she usually writes Star Wars fanfic, got an epic-length series-in-progress, but has had two story ideas niggling at the back of her head since she watched the movies with her kids years ago (she read the books before then, but it wasn't until watching the movies that the ideas bit her), and she's finally writing them. One's finished, started posting in Feb, last chapter posted in May, 45 chapters, over 350,000 words. Other's a series-in-progress, the first two in the series are finished, third's being posted. Since she's got chronic illness due to allergies to ...just about everything in the state she lives in (if she goes to Florida, where she grew up, it all miraculously clears up, but she's stuck in Maine at the moment and has been for years), she plots and types to distract herself from her body's failings.

She's been getting death threats for going against people's interpretations of some characters, if you can believe it.

EDIT: Oh, and I forgot, she's just been asked to do a book signing for her first profic at a convention, so that's awesome. Said profic started out as a modern AU Star Wars fic, and then she realised "y'know, if I file the serial numbers off this, this could be sold..." and now she's been invited to a convention!
Care to provide a link? You've sparked my curiosity...
How curiously specific, Ezio. How curiously, curiously specific.
Hmm... What are the odds that Ezio's "tools" contain at least one pistol (after all, two wildly different pistols could be said to not be a pair).

Where it not for the fact that I suspect Ezio of going for the painful, yet not permanent incapacitation, I think we would find out.

IIRC he does possess a pistol, a wrist-mounted one. So what he said is technically true. He does not have two of them, only one.

For which, the Star Wars, the Harry Potters, or the profic?

Finished Harry Potter fic: Swung by Serafim.

Ongoing Potterfic series: Of a Linear Circle.

Ongoing Star Wars series: Re-Entry, and Re-Entry: Journey of the Whills. One or two of this almost-eighty-work series (most quite short, it's really more one giant ongoing fic than a series) are rated Explicit, so I'll abide by the two-click rule and just say they're under the same account as the first two.

Profic: Ashlesha.

Some of her works include sex scenes, of multiple orientations, but she always hides really good character moments in them, so my asexual arse skims them for the character insights. If you're willing to wait, a YA version of Ashlesha is forthcoming, with those same character insights delivered in a YA-friendly way - but it was already supposed to be out last year before her health took a turn for the worse, as was the sequel, so it's anyone's guess when it will eventually appear.

EDIT: Oh, and in case you were interested in the HP researchfail rants: deadcatwithaflamethrower. I can't remember the tag for them at the moment though, sorry, and I'm pretty certain there's one or two that don't have the same tag as the rest of them - might be best to just click on the 'Harry Potter' tag, and go digging.

I did mean the research fail rants, actually. Than you for the link... now I just need to figure out how to find stuff on Tumblr

Well ladies and gents, I finally got to Revelations. Liking it so far, but now I'm waiting for the next piece of this wonderful story, especially now with even more little details added to what I knew of the trilogy beforehand.

Revelations wasn't my favorite AC game, but I very much appreciated bringing both Altair's and Ezio's stories to satisfying, albeit sad/bittersweet, endings.

Brotherhood was my favorite of the Ezios, partly because of The Posse. Don't wanna murder this guy in the middle of a Guard Huddle? Well, then I guess it's time for an Arrow Storm.

Black Flag is the favorite overall, because it was a game that didn't bother with the overly serious 'revenge!' tones until later in the game. Not to mention that the naval combat was fun as all hell.

Revelations was fairly weak as a game, starting the trend of same old same old meh for the AC series. But story wise it was quite satisfying. I'm glad I played it, but have no intention to replay it. All the games before that I have played at least twice. AC2 I've played about 8 times over the years, that's how much I enjoy that game.

AC2 was a sequel done right. It fixed the flaws AC1 had in its mission structure and controls, and improved the story telling, character investment (Ezio is much easier to empathize with than Altair), and expanded the tool box in fun and interesting ways (like twin hidden blades, disarms, and all the fun assassination methods).

So far I have to agree with everyone in liking Brotherhood more. And what you mentioned about Ezio being easier to empathize with than Altair? Also agreed. I also wonder why they had to go and change the control layout in Revelations. Muscle memory got me killed an embarrassing number of times.

But back to the story, one of the things that first got me hooked was seeing an older, wiser and more experienced Ezio getting his youth back. So long as said youth doesn't go to his head I am expecting so many interesting things to happen just from that combination alone.

Personally I also feel AC peaked at Brotherhood, and everything after 3 just kinda sucked. Still I'm glad that we're getting Ezio back in this story, but I don't think I'd appreciate him in another AC game.

Okay, so, confession time: when I started writing this story so many years ago, I had played about ten hours or so of Brotherhood. That was all of AC I had ever played at that point.

...To this day, I remain amazed at the number of readers who tell me I basically nailed Ezio, because writing him often felt like a high-wire act where I wasn't sure whether I would get it right or fail terribly. :V

But yeah, to this day I haven't finished Brotherhood and I still have yet to finish Revelations. I have the entire Ezio collection purchased, but any time I spent gaming is less time spent writing.

Though of the two games I played, I have to quite honestly say that I have no favourite. Constantinople is just too great a setting to speak badly of, and I judt love the atmosphere. As for Brotherhood, the character development Ezio undergoes is just an excellent story I appreciate.

So yeah, there we go, my two cents on the current discussion.

Should totally play Black Flag at some point, though. Because it looks and sounds awesome. :p

I bought the collectors edition of AC3 when it came out, still haven't touched it.

My old manager and I ran into the same problem. We kinda left the main quest behind, because piracy on the high seas.
Those barrels won't fish themselves out of the ocean.

AC3 and 4 were the first two AC games I didn't complete, ironically for completely opposite reasons.

Despite all the improved and expanded mechanics(which I DID appreciate), I just couldn't find AC3 interesting enough to keep me hooked.

I think AC3 suffered most from following Revelations, and that they really should've tried to wrap up Desmond's story there, too.

AC4, I found the naval combat way too interesting, and couldn't bring myself to do anything else.

AC4 didn't even need to be an Assassin's Creed game. The naval combat was just so damn good. They should have repackaged the game engine under a new IP - the AC storyline has been crap ever since Desmond died anyways.

But yeah Fernande. You *nailed* Ezio. I suppose you must be close enough to his thought patterns, as a person, that by mere coincidence it ended up dovetailing perfectly.

I didn't hate him, I just didn't really find him that interesting after he actually became an assassin. I actually enjoyed all the gameplay of him growing up; once the AC part took over, it just felt like a rehash of Ezio's introduction to the Brotherhood, through the viewpoint of someone who's not nearly as charismatic.

Didn't really seem to bring anything new to the series .

Hilariously enough, I got the collectors edition of AC4 when it came out. Pre-ordered it, even got that treasure map.
Still in its plastic wrapping.

...am I the only person who actually liked Connor? :V
I liked Connor. It's just that the story seemed to kind of stall after a point. I seem to recall focusing on hunting and such more than caring about the main questline after a while. ...Though that's how I play most RPGs, lol.
