IOU a College Degree (GURPS) (IOU)

Curious is, in this case, already covered by the Compulsive Behavior (Reading). Curious would make her curious about everything.

BUT...

Magery 0 costs 5 points. You need that to even try for higher levels of Magery. Magery costs 10 points per level. Higher Magery means Spells are easier to cast.

15 points for Magery 0 and Magery 1. Minus 5 for Curious. Leaves you two points over.

Cutting DX back to 13 gives you 18 points to spend on Spells and such. Run with that.

Could take off the Curious if you want? Although GMs do like a character that will start the adventure off by poking their nose where it does not belong.:whistle:
She is like that. Not nosy, but keenly interested into about everything around her.
And not getting the dangers involved, sometimes. Or ignoring them....
So, some spells.
A bit of occultism or thaumatology.. and she is ready.

I can't help but think I am missing something.
The Martial Arts (Judo) perk from the Martial Arts book, which says "If you have skills X, Y, and Z, you can improve those skills, this list of techniques, and some of these advantages without needing instruction."

I'm guessing that there will be no psychic blueberry muffins in this game. Sorely tempted to see if I can put together a flying cuttlefish.

I don't have the Martial Arts book handy as I am out on the road. Annoying part of being a truck driver.

I still need to find a replacement skill for Zoology for someone. Considering that it is rather central to his character concept, I am hoping for something a little more elegant than lots of points in Biology.

Are specialisations a thing in Gurps 4ed?

For some skills. For example, IIRC, Cooking is Average. But you can specialize and Cooking(Indian) is an Easy skill. Optional specialties tend to get used with VH skills like Physics, and then there are some skills where you have to specialize, like Drive, Pilot, Repair, Guns, or Electronics Operation. I'm pretty sure Skill Categories mentions them, as does GURPS Lite.

Would Biology :animal be a viable thing, then?

Not for Biology no.

Oddly enough, Biology specializes in Planet Type. Biology (Earthlike) is the usual example used. Although you can select Gas Giants, Ice Worlds, Rock Worlds and more.

Character Creation Example, part 4
Proof that even your GM will make mistakes. Which reminds me, I need to get some Rules posted.

But Bad Sight (Nearsightedness) being 25 points as a Disadvantage was bothering me. So I took a look at my rulebook that I had with me.

Lo and behold, there is a mitigation for Tech Level 6 and up. Glasses!

Considering that I had been assuming that our Shy Librarian had been wearing them, that just makes Nearsightedness from -25 to -10 points.

Which gives only 3 points for spells.

Body Control spells? The first three spells in that category are Itch, Spasm, and Pain. Which works as Pain needs Spasm as a prerequisite, and Spasm requires knowledge of Itch.

Which makes this a 150 point character ready to go.

Nice.
May i ask for a final modification? I need no higher sling tnan dex.
Could you put one point in occult , one in... History and the remainder in .. spells? Then, I am ready.
Except for the name.. hm....
Theodora Cornelius? Sybille Cornelius? Theodora Elverding?
An brunette , small and light, Glasses wearing, tousled, uncontrolable Hair?

A name that isn't Theodora? :V

I have no idea how you're making or how I should describe a character, but here we go..

How about.. a genius combatant with amazing talent and abilities, but lazy, cynical, burnt out, and practically depressed, which highly affects him and everything from his decisions to ability to move, forcing him to do only the bare minimum of work? Slight Shikamaru Expy I suppose?

Or.. perhaps an actor, writer, artist, singer, and overall master of the fine arts, but they themselves are emotionless, practically a sociopath who learns how to act normal by studying others?

Hm. The later has probably Callous or secret:sociopath.
The first.. i think laziness is an disadvantage, odious personal gabut:moans about tnings being a hassle constantly....
Remember that we are entering an university, so, unless your character is either sone sort of child soldier or on a veterans bill equivalent, the jaded guy will be hard to justify.
The faker, sure, thats easier.

Not on 150/-75 when eighty of those points are to be spent on IQ.

*continues trying to work out the floating cuttlefish*
*won't have access to books for most of the day*
I'm struggling to make someone who's just (very) good at Parkour/Climbing/ect, ect. What they say seems even more impossible.

It depends. Really depends on how bad you will be in everything else and how many disads you are willing to take/have in your character concept. But yeah, we should perhaps remember this is not a supers game. More an "weird place and strange people" game....

Righto, I was just exaggerating my character.

I'll go with maximum lazy then, nix the combatant, and simply go with drawing.

It takes more points than I start with to be as dextrous as I am intelligent due to the 14IQ minimum. I can't even make a uni level sports player.

You can buy down Per and Will, but that does count against the disad limit. If you go for maximum disadvantages, you are going to have a bad time, but 225 points for buying positive stuff. Of those 225, 80 are spent raising IQ, leaving you with 145. An athlete should have plenty of DX and HT, so if you buy those up to 12 each that's another 60 points, so you have at most 85 points for buying skills and advantages.

Not bad, but you're going to be relying heavily on raw talent rather than skill, since most of your skills will probably only be bought to +0 or +1.

@UberNimrod, would this sort of character be possible?
  • Mathematical prodigy
  • Based on the above, and if this is set in the broader IW setting, a world-jumping ability.
  • Also based on the above, a short-range LOS teleport ability.
  • Nearsighted drawback, and additionally the LOS teleport ability either doesn't function or has only very minimal range without glasses. (And we'll say for some reason uncorrectable through surgery / healing without disabling the teleport.)
  • Claustrophobia drawback.
  • If there are still points available, as a minor talent some defensive magic, hacking abilities, or dark-brooding-moe points.
  • Tentative name: David Alterman
edit: oh, and some investment in multiverse-relevant geography or history skills, if that's a thing, plus a few languages (Russian, Hebrew, Latin, and Sanskrit). The theme being "multiverse explorer".

History requires either a geographical specialty, or a specific period of time. Pick one.

Any specific spells? Or just keep using Body Control spells?

Any specific quirks?

And do you want the full Nearsightedness? No glasses at all?

But Mathematical ability is doable, as is Claustrophobia. Not sure about the Teleport, but World Jumping is out I think.
