Tomorrow. Didn't have that much free time over new year but I am back at my place and should be able to get back on track.
We have no pictures, or ideas of their morphology, unless @Erandil is willing to reveal something. So, sure, these could be Asari, but the thing is? They could also be Krogan. All-male Krogan "colonies" are actually fairly common, from what I understand, since the females tend to congregate in large groups, usually on Tuchanka and other heavily-populated Krogan worlds, to protect the identities of their fertile members. And if there are only males down there, and if most Krogans only really interact with males of their species (as tends to be the case), then it's possible that the subset of their language that we studied for translation used no female pronouns.[] Enigma:
You have captured a lot of signal intelligence during your operations in Alpha05 but deciphering them takes a lot of time, even with the added manpower you recruited last year. It might be time to approach Junko Zane, currently back in the LSF, as well as your friends in the Order for some truly specialised help.
Chance of success: 70% Result: Decode alien language and data more quickly
Needed: 30 Rolled: 67
As you hoped the help provide by Juni and the Order is enough to allow you people to at least partially crack and translate the intercepted transmissions from Alpha05. Once understood it seems like the technology behind those transmissions is not nearly as advanced as suspected and near if not below human capabilities which surprises many of your scientist since the alien jump-drive suggested a far higher technological level.
You haven't yet cracked their video encryption and so don't have a picture of how they looked by you have managed to crack some of their audio and text files. Content wise most of them seem to be status updates between the various ships and their base(s) and the planet, quite similar to what you would expect to see on a human world and lacking in any interesting cultural or military information. Of more interest is however that many of your linguists, anthropologists and xeno scientists think that the intercepted messages suggest that the colony world views itself as an independent faction and that contact with the rest of the galaxy is a rare occurrence. Also of interest is that the actual spoken alien language lies within the spectrum of what a human can hear and could theoretically be at least partially reproduced by a human. Their language also seems to be monogendered which could either point to a monogendered civilisation or an interesting cultural tick. A deeper analysis will likely unveil more information but your scientist are already confident that they could produce a primitive but workable translator in the coming weeks which could be be very useful if you decide to contact the aliens.
Result: Alien transmission partially cracked, information suggests independent colony and comparable technology level (at least in information/computer sciences), primitive translation possible, more information in the upcoming turns
I'm thinking:
[X] Alien ship
[X] Armoured Marines
As I see it, there are three things to consider.
First: We're in the lawless Terminus. In the depths of space, where no one can (metaphorically or literally) hear you scream. People in places like this tend to be desperate, grasping at every advantage they can get, no matter who it hurts. Imagine this scenario: Unknown ships jump into your space. You think they're pirates, at first, here to pillage and burn. Then, it turns out that they are in fact a completely unknown species, never before heard of anywhere in the Terminus or Citadel space. They have no friends, no connections, and are probably new enough to the galactic scene that their technology is lesser than yours -- especially since you cannot detect a single speck of eezo on their ships, and they approached your planet in STL. Stealthy STL, at that, where simply popping in in FTL would be much quieter on the approach. You're desperate, and need materials to live, so you think "Hey, no one's going to miss these guys and they seem rather primitive, let's take their stuff!", so you attack (and get eviscerated by their DEWs, but you don't know that). It's the kind of thing I could easily see happening in the Terminus, the kind of thing that likely has happened in the Terminus before. Hence the Armoured Marines.
Second: However we introduce ourselves to the galaxy at large will affect all our relationships going forward. Now, if we were First Contacting the Citadel, I would go with only an honor guard. It's the more diplomatic option, and says that we come in peace, but also have a military tradition, so don't expect to just roll over us. But this is the Terminus. While we do want to keep vital tech info back -- the Hood, Jump Holes, DEWs unless necessary -- we also don't want to look weak. Because if we do, every pirate and warlord in the sector is going to get on our case. Given the lawlessness and lack of civility in this sector, going in with an iron gauntlet that says "Don't fuck with us if you don't want a bloody nose" only seems sensible.
Third, and perhaps most important, is something I realized while we were waiting for the update: We don't know if these are Asari. All we have is language which we know is mono-gendered:
We have no pictures, or ideas of their morphology, unless @Erandil is willing to reveal something. So, sure, these could be Asari, but the thing is? They could also be Krogan. All-male Krogan "colonies" are actually fairly common, from what I understand, since the females tend to congregate in large groups, usually on Tuchanka and other heavily-populated Krogan worlds, to protect the identities of their fertile members. And if there are only males down there, and if most Krogans only really interact with males of their species (as tends to be the case), then it's possible that the subset of their language that we studied for translation used no female pronouns.
If these are Asari, I think they'll understand the show of force, given where they live. But if they're Krogan, not having a show of force is likely to get us shot.
As for why the Alien Ship, it's because that way we can beat a hastier retreat than from the planet should it become necessary -- don't need to deal with gravity wells, and have the Corvette backing us up. (Actually, @Erandil can the Corvette do orbital bombardment?) Convincing them to come to our ship will likely require a diplomacy check, but if people want to try that I'm willing to change my vote.
[X] Alien planet
[X] Armoured marines
The Alien planet offers greatest rewards I think and medium safety.
Armoured marines because I'd rather look militaristic than look like a soft target.
@Erandil: And I am glad to see this quest back!
fasquardon
@Erandil So, any news on the update? I'd hate for the quest to die just as we are getting to the good part.
Germany is a nice place. You will get it tomorrow. Here in Germany the semester is ending next month which means various exams and papers are coming up which I sadly have to focus on.
Meeting Place:
[] Alien planet
Or you could accept their invitation to meet on their planet. It would likely be a more official affair and you would have to leave the Valiant in orbit since it is not capable of landing on planets but you and you team could get a great impression of how their society functions and how their city looks.
Escort:
[] Armoured Marines:
If you are concerned about your safety than taking a squad of heavily armoured (and armed) marines might be a good idea though your hosts might be discomforted by such a martial display.
Republic of Larrisa
Founded by the Asari Matriach Voniy M'priros who, with her followers, was exiled from Thessia due to her unconventional views regarding body-modification and gene-modding shortly after the Rachni Wars. She and her followers were of the opinion that self-improvement via implants and genemodding were necessary for the continued survival and prosperity of the Asari race, a view strongly opposed by the cultural and religious authorities of the time. After her banishment Voniy severed all ties to the rest of the galaxy and travelled for over a decade through the Milky Way before deciding to settle on Larrisa, a temperate planet in the Terminus expanse.
Rediscovered by a Lystheni prospector just a few decades ago the Asari of Larrisa have developed their own society and culture and quickly made a name for themselves in the bionic and medical field while keeping their distance from the Citadel races.
(More investigation needed)
Status: Minor Power
Inspiration: Deus Ex Series
Definitely good to hear we missed out on the pirates or Turian warlords; either of those would've been a headache and a half to handle, no doubt.
