(Discussion/Planning) Power Rangers: Mythic Knights (A Sentai Story)

Can I have a Ballista? Or a Crossbow?

Maybe a Halberd?
I can see how you would form a piston crossbow from a longsword with RWBY-style transformations. I'd say go for that?
I feel like Red legally cannot be the sole mainly ranged ranger on the team. That's probably against the law.

So, you are giant sword? Well, swords are heroic and leader-like, so I guess I'm double swords.
I am heavy weapons guy. :V

I'm going with a Nuckelavee, that okay?

Ballista Scythe, because why not? :V

EDIT: HOW DID I NOT REALIZE THIS?!

Do our weapons all have to be medieval?!

Sniper Scythe! SNIPER SCYTHE!

I'm fairly sure you only get one weapon per transformation, so you'd need an extra edge for that and they would be separate transformations that you can't use simultaneously.

So, question.

It's says that athletics is our overall physical ability, and that it can incorporate things like physical strength and agility, so, like, does this help at all with attack or defense?

Cause, I mean, it feels really dumb to say that being in shape, being stronger and faster, does not help you more effectively attack people and avoid being attacked, but a strict following of the rules seems to imply that.

So, um, what does it do? Is it strictly avoiding obstacles and moving about?

If you aren't going to have it help attack and defense automatically ... could we maybe house rule an edge that might make sense?

Maybe something like Athletic Attack and/or Defender, that allows you to use athletics to affect actions involving those stats. I realize that we aren't using dice, but just to give an idea of what I'm talking about, maybe something like this

"(Defense or Attack + Athletics) divided by 2" is used in place of Defense or Attack rolls.

We aren't actually going to be using these stats directly, they are just a framework to depict general ability.

Also, Tokyo Heroes runs on the concept of the Heroes attacking/defense working more off their heroic willpower (to explain why you can have willowy gymnast types that are just as effective as the fullblown martial artists.) Ultimately, their physical abilities aren't contributing as much as a characters Shonen Willpower.

@zero_traveler question: what about aspect edges? Do we just not get those?

...Aspect Edges? Do you mean the special abilities respective of each aspect color?

We've kind of done away with the Hero Dice/Karma mechanics for this, so just use it if it's in line with your character concept?

Maybe a Halberd?

If you can explain how you went from the standard Knight Sword (which is more Broadsword than Longsword) then go for it.

The weapon segments/folds/extends/angles etc to let you reconfigure it to the new form, any projectiles are standard 'energy bolt' types, and anything that seems like it wouldn't work (like the extra mass of a Greatsword despite not actually gaining much mass) is handwaved by magic sentai powers.

The idea is to go ham in your own unique way, and use it to blow up monsters.

I was asking because it's basically +1 edge you didn't appear to list in the template.

Also I've figured out a way to solve the range issue for myself! Take Secondary Transformation at expense of a Personal Edge, and have a secondary secondary mode that turns my greatsword into a gattling gun! Muahahaha!

I feel like it's poor form to start with a secondary form. That's the sort of thing you should unlock at least a few episode in.

Like, actually, I was meaning to ask this myself a bit later so might as well do it now.

Can we gain more edges as we go on?

If not, could I just not use an edge and put it in reserve for later use? Cause a secondary form for the Red Ranger is almost tradition at this point, but it just feels lame to start with it, I feel like it should come in at a dramatically appropriate point ... or at least a few episodes in.

Well since we're not using the hero dice and thus, not using the cost of the transformation, I'm planning on locking it narratively behind my worst stat. Because starting with a super mode in episode 1 would be silly.

Just in the interest of proper heroic theming, you might want to skew away from the explicitly evil mythological creatures.

Of course you are going to gain more powers as we go on, we've already got the Giant Robots waiting in the wings.

Red Rangers power up mode (or battlizer) is usually a late series powerup, so we'll need an appropriately desperate situation for it to show up in.

I... suppose instead of a secondary transformation I can just swap a personal edge out for a second special attack. I'll have to reword the finisher to something more general so it can fit both of them, but I can do it.

Ah! Centaurs have a thing for Archery, no?
Yep.

I was gonna call my super mode "FullArms Mode". I thought it sounded cool.

Bronze Knight
Aaand it's bedtime for me, but I finished my damn sheet. Brown Bronze Ranger present and accounted for.

character sheet
Name: Charles Henry Walsh
Desired Color: Brown Bronze
Background: Charles (or "Charlie", as some co-workers call him) moved to Pangea as a kid with his family just after its founding, when his parents were selected as some of the first colonists. About halfway through highschool, he dropped out due to an overabundance of apathy and a lack of social skills sufficient to make any lasting social links to convince him to bother going. He spent a few years drifting along in cruise control, as surprisingly few people are actually willing to hire someone without the work ethic to get through compulsory education, and he really couldn't be bothered to look very hard. Eventually he stumbled across his current job, a bouncer at a nightclub, and was hired because he "looked scary enough". All in all, it's a good job for him, as he mostly just has to stand there and check people's IDs, and occasionally step in front of the door or drag a rowdy drunk off the premises..
He gets on well enough with his co-workers, though more to their efforts than his, and might even be able to develop a relationship beyond simply professional if he ever clues on to the bartender's flirting. All in all, his life is currently in a comfortable holding pattern, and sudden upsets (such as, say, monsters attacking the city) would be less than appreciated.
Description: Tall and broadly built, with short, spiky blond hair. Typical casual dress consists of jeans, a long-sleeved shirt, and a gray vest. Business dress swaps the jeans for slacks and adds a jacket for professionalism.

ATTRIBUTES:
Attack: 4 (Knows how to throw a punch.)
Defense: 4 (Knows how to take one.)
Brains: 2 (Highschool dropout, and sometimes has trouble with the subtleties of social interaction.)
Athleticism: 4 (He does his best to stay fit.)
Spirit: 1 (Slightly more motivated than a rock. Maybe.)

DERIVED:
Initiative: 6
Resistance: 13
Stamina: 36

TRANSFORMED POWERS
Basic Attack: (Knight Sword)
Special Attack (Knight Arm: Kingsword (Giant Buster Sword))
Secondary Special Attack: (Knight Arm: Kingcannon (Kingsword's blade splits into four sections and the hilt reconfigures, forming a giant rotary laser cannon.)
Finisher Attack (Emperor Longstrike: This weapon of mine glows with an awesome power! Its burning grip tell me to defeat you! (A sword beam when used with Kingsword, an extremely powerful charged shot when used with Kingcannon))
Group Asset: <Attack> (A team up finisher, you guys can decide on what it is)

I have a question, and it is how did he manage to convince anyone that he should be accepted onto the PANGAEA colony?

Especially 'right after its founding' when they would be looking for motivated and skilled colonists to help with the infrastructure the most.

Did he come as a kid because one or both of his parents were selected?

Maybe he got smuggled-in in secret?

Fleeing politicians to possibly the biggest site of political attention in the world currently doesn't make much sense, either.

He sounds like a roller-coaster of bad decisions, honestly.

That was what I had in mind.

...Point. Imma change that.

He sounds like a roller-coaster of bad decisions, honestly.
Yes, yes he is. That's part of the idea.

Viridian Knight
With a name derived from the most common Japanese names I could look up, and a spirit as brilliant as the unconquered sun, a new hero has arrived!

Name: Soma Sato

Desired Color: Green Veridian!

Background: The heir to his family's fighting style, 'The Righteous Fist', Soma has trained for as long as he can remember, and looks forward to inheriting the dojo when his father eventually dies. However, he dreams of doing more for the world, and working towards his family's philosophy of Noble JUSTICE! After a tearful goodbye from his father, he left the depths of Japan and headed to PANGEA, to study criminal justice while paying his way teaching at the local dojo. Any doubts to his skills in his birthright were destroyed by his overwhelming ability, any doubts to his competency when teaching were shattered by the progress his students have shown, but his feasibility towards his future profession, on the other hand, is still very much in doubt, especially with his tendency to shout his family's motto in virtually every situation. Despite his personality, however, he is in fact maintaining passing grades in all his classes, and his teachers count him a good student and a positive, if loud, influence in class.

Talented in cooking, Soma originally desired to pay his way as a chief, but choose to demonstrate his culinary abilities with The Noble Drink, a smoothie whose recipe was passed down through the generations, further refined by his own skills. One can, as Soma does, consume only this drink and live your life at the peak of health, but as it is violently green, semi solid, and according to some reports moves, that position went down in flames. Despite this, he still lives off The Noble Drink, and often carries extra portions in bottles for others to enjoy. No one has taken him up on this offer to date.

Unsurprisingly, Soma's free time is spent in training, and considering his schedule, this happens throughout the day: he meditates in the morning before the sunrise, he runs everywhere he goes, ignoring all other modes of transportation, his lunch is devoured as fast as possible to leave time to practice his katas, and he finishes his night on a large rock overlooking the ocean practicing his punches and kicks. While he craves spars, his reputation drives his potential opponents away, much to his dismay.

Description: Tall, with his black hair cut short and a perpetual smile on his face. He usually wears black sweatpants and a green tee shirt for ease of movement. There are unconfirmed rumors the black bands he wears on his wrists and ankles are weights, but…. he has those on all the time. No one could be that crazy. Right?

ATTRIBUTES:
Attack: 2
Defense: 3
Brains: 2
Athleticism: 3
Spirit: 5

DERIVED:
Initiative: 4
Resistance: 10
Stamina: 33

TRANSFORMED POWERS
Basic Attack (Knight Sword)
Special Attack (Sword-Chucks: Grabbing the handle in two hands, Soma pulls it apart, revealing a chain within it as a blade emerges from the pommel.)
Finisher Attack (Noble Krakens Fury: Lashing wildly with his weapon, Soma slashes and smashes them into submission. )
Group Asset: <Attack> (???)

PERSONAL EDGES:
Edge: Hard to Kill (+3 to Resistance)
Special Power: Special Movement: Shunshin: Having lived a life to surpass the limits of humanity, it is not surprising that the addition of magic has helped Soma to at last achieve this goal. While seeming to be teleportation to the uninitiated, the Shunshin is simply the act of the body achieving impossible speeds for a brief instant, allowing Soma to disappear without a trace.
Knack: Cooking
(Yes... I have promised, and I have delivered. Meet Might Guy, the Power Ranger, and weep in despair!)

This... is actually an Edge, apparently, Secondary Transformation. In this scenario, Battlizer would be Empowered Hero. I'm actully interested in both that and Always Transformed, but I probably need an official judgement before I can grab them.
I was gonna take Secondary Transformation, but folks talked me out of it.
Always Transformed could be really fun to play around with, and I considered it for Charles, but I decided I wanted him to have a civilian identity.

According to the description, it just says you have the powers constantly, and it doesn't mention the outfit, which I read as 'has powers as normal looking person'. Either way, though, I'm interested.

I always considered the outfits to be an inherent part of the powers, and it does say always "transformed" rather than "always empowered".

'Always has access to their full abilities', actually. Page 30.
I read the edge description, I was talking about its name. Also:
Always Transformed
The majority of Tokyo Heroes characters have to transform to have access to their special powers, but a hero with this Edge for some reason always has access to his full abilities. This may have some drawbacks in terms of the character's appearance or other oddities.
Note the underlined.
