D&D 5e- darkness with dawn

Interesting take on a Wizard, @searcher8. Though, in my opinion, the School of War Magic, Abjuration or Evocation would have been more fitting for a soldier in a battalion. Divination sounds more fitting for a general or a tactician/strategist, someone in the upper ranks of command than someone down in the dirt with the other forces.
I was initially thinking of having him have something of a scout roll in the army to justify it, but in retrospect, after looking up the War Caster School, you're right. I swapped to War Caster, assuming that's alright with the GM.
I don't know about this world so can you tell me which military would my guy have been in is there an empire?
I am looking for an army that lets nobility have high-rank jobs solely on the fact that their nobility while still allowing commoners the opportunity to rise up in the rank of the military with hard work and results. just looking for a name and place
I'm curious about this as well, since my character's backstory also involves military service.
Up to you,,though you should write a few lines at least, and they should preferably contain a background with some complexity, that possibly might provide a ground for story hooks or character personality and development
Understood. I'll probably start working on mine tomorrow then after I get back from work, which will likely be 13 hours from when this post is written.

Also I've updated my character sheet with bought equipment and copied spells, if anyone wants to go over it.

I am okay with changing this is a good excuse to bring out my already made rogue Lv1 but I got to know do you want a rogue or monk or rogue/monk multiclass?
I meant either monk or rogue, and we are level 5,,so yes, level him, but to 5
Qaelyn's lived a mostly solitary life in a graveyard, so she's entering a large city for the first time and is probably overwhelmed by the size of both the coty and the number of people living there. :p
Its a roadside inn, not in a city. There are still dozens of people in the common room though

Yes, and a great character, really intresting with the halfling

Well, anyway, I will give a survey of your world in 12-24 hours(sorry for the long time window, but I have several things I need to do, without knowing how much time each will take, or how much time the survey will take to finalise, in real game I will be far more accurate)
I will give it in several hours, things seem to be longer, but it will be in this window

Sorry for the double posting, I tried to copy this to the previous message and accidentally posted it

Ayyy, another fellow hermit. I'm interesting to see where he'll differ from Qaelyn. Though, I am sad to see your Barbarian go.

me too I had already written the first part of his backstory the part about him being a soldier.
question do you have any ideas which background fits a monk Hafling from a gated community I have been reading up on Ghostwise halflings?

If you want to adapt your background from the barbarian, he might have been a soldier who have lost his temper similiarily to your barbarian, and was sent away. Ashamed at what he has done, he sought serenity and spiritual enlightment, becoming a monk, potentially being tutored by some master, or in a monastery. Possibly, he might still struggle to control his temper sometime, making a conflict between his monk serenity and his temper

Well, keep in mind that you don't need to follow the source material on Ghostwise Halflings as this campaign is taking place in an original setting.

I'm assuming your gated community is your monastery? If that's the case, you should ask yourself whether your character was born there, or did they have a past outside of those walls?

In the first case, Hermit, Acolyte or Sage seems most appropriate, though less emphasis on the religious or scholarly aspects of the background and instead replace them with your Monastery's philosophy's and practices, and how they combine their study of the world with their martial prowess . In the latter, any background works, really. Though you'd need to come up with a reason why your character eventually settled down in a monastery. For example, an Urchin might see it as a way to escape the poverty and inevitable life of crime they seemed to be destined for. A criminal could seek redemption and self-betterment. A Sailor might have had their ship capsized, and been nursed back to health at the monastery.

Another thing you'd probably want to think about is why they'd eventually leave. Were they chased out of their home for causing too much trouble? Are they leaving on a pilgrimage as the final test of their training? Do they have some sort of mission their monastery gave them?

oh thank goodness Ghostwise Halflingsare from what I can tell have a vow of silence to atone for a sin they committed and only talk through telepathy, and less of a gated community and more like they don't like to leave their home unlike other halflings

Logain Erikson was the son of commoners who died of sickness when he was a rebellious youth who had to decide prison or the military to sort him out, he chose the military where he found a new family people he cared about and seeing how the higher-ups we treating them left a bad taste in his mouth so he applied for a higher position and when fewer people died under him and his leadership it drew the attention of the general Ironside who prompted him to officer and he was well-liked by most but not all. There were those who believed authority was a birthright and didn't like this young upstart commoner showing them up but there was one most vocal who butted heads Logain the most his name was Andrews they're animosity for each other was so great there was a pool on who would throw the first punch. It all came to head when Logain found out that Andrews drafted a village of its men and without training them sent them to battle as bait Logain only knew this because he keeps an eye on his enemies. Logain barged into his office and demanded an explanation whatever Andrews said made Logain lose it and was found throttling Andrews in broad daylight.

Yeah. If you don't want to create an entirely new subrace of Halflings and don't want to rely on the Faerun lore about Ghostwise Halflings, maybe you could flavour your character's telepathy as some form of special/sign language like Thieves Cant? It doesn't enable two-communication anyway from what I can tell.

really I thought I could talk with one person "Silent Speech. You can speak telepathically to any creature within 30 feet of you. The creature understands you only if the two of you share a language. You can speak telepathically in this way to one creature at a time."

Well, you can send a telepathic message to someone, but they can't reply back telepathically. It's clarified in this tweet.

Alternatively, instead of reflavouring the Silent Speech, maybe you could just take the Naturally Stealthy or Stout Resilience features from the other Halfling subraces? That's up to the DM to approve or not though.

It is okay, as the ability increase are identical in size, so you switch your lightfoot/stout halfling with wisdom, which isnt a big change, or an unrealistic one

what about Lotusden Halfling it also has a 1 to wisdom?
Ability Score Increase. Your Wisdom score increases by 1.
Children of the Woods. You know the Druidcraft Cantrip. At 3rd level, you can cast the Entangle spell once per long rest. At the 5th level, you can cast Spike Growth spell once per long rest. These spells don't require the material components normally required. Wisdom is your spellcasting ability for these spells.
Timberwalk. Ability checks made to track you are at disadvantage and you can move through difficult terrain made of non-magical plants and overgrowth without expending extra movement.

That's the new subrace from the Explorer's Guide to Wildemont, right? It does mean that your halfing would need to live near or in a forest. Or at least used to.

Is rapier your melee kensei weapon? It is not a monk weapon normally

In melee weapons, you have several options:
-the rapier, longsword, battleaxe, war pick, morningstar, and warhammer, all deal 1d8 damage, some are versatile, though using a weapon in both hands means you lose your unarmed attack.
-the scimitar or shortsword deal 1d6 and are light. You can already use shortswords, but this allows you to use them with kensei features.
-the whip only deals 1d4, but it has reach

Within those categories, it is mainly a choice of flavor

With ranged weapon, your best bet is probably taking a shortbow

I thought finesse weapons counted as monk weapons I will get rid of it but I am still deciding on my 2, one melee and one ranged and suggestion would be helpful
It's the other way around. Monk Weapons get the finesse property.

Considering you're a small character that leaves your ranged options a little limited: a hand crossbow would probably be the most optimal choice but that means sacrificing an ASI for Crossbow Mastery so you can make multiple attacks with it. A shortbow works as well if you don't have the money to spare.

As for melee weapons, your weapon will scale with your unarmed strike damage die anyway, so you probably want to get a weapon that doesn't deal bludgeoning damage to cover resistances or get a weapon with reach. You could pick a rapier, but considering that the Longsword will get finesse if you pick it and is versatile, it's much better overall.

Not true, nothing about how the Unarmed Strike action is written says it can't be performed when both your hands are occupied. It can be a kick, headbutt, elbow strike and any other manner of striking a foe with your body.

Hmm, maybe you are right. It wasnt clarified, so I always presumed it is not possible

He might be better off taking a weapon with a d8 die, maybe with versatile that makes it d10. His unarmed die will only reach d8 in level 11, and by then he will be able to choose two more kensei weapons

He can choose something like longsword and shortbow now, take a whip, for its reach, at level 6. If he wants a hand crossbow, he can take it at level 11,,tgough I dont see why its worth the feat, as the ability to dual wield is the only advantage, and it comes in place of his kensei shot, that already gives him a bonus 1d4 to damage

Survey number 1- dylan
Well, here comes the survey

The kingdoms of the dylan land, where your characters are, and most are native to, is a strange confederation of everal kingdoms, in the lush land of dylan, which cover ab area of 1,150,000 square kilometers. The kingdoms are each independent, but share their culture and nature, and are bound together by a set of ancient traditions and loose, unwritten agreements, which date back thousands of years. Wars and rivalries exist between the kingdoms, and in some cases, are rather frequent, but they have free trade, and usually passage, and act as one in face of external enemy. They are also bound together by 3 organizations that are shared between all kingdoms. Fitst is the assembly of the lords, to which each kingdom can send several emissaries, depending on size, and at whole there, are 250 men in it. The emmisaries are chosen by the kings, and are tradionally noblemen. The assembly chooses from it twelve menbers to sit in the council of heroes. Those two bodies manage things related to dylan as a whole, and the relations betwmween kingdoms. For their operation, they receive a small part of each kingdom taxes. In addition, there are the golden mages, and the order of the divine. The golden mages are an organization that operates as a joint mage guild of all dylan, and most mages in tmdylan are part of the golden mages. They also take many childs with magical affinity, training them as mages, to become golden mages. Some, however, train at a later age, or become golden mages by joining them with pre achieved training. They consider themselves above the "petty struggles between the kingdoms" and mostly work toward things common for all kingdoms, or that are not involved in rivalries. They are, however, supplying battlemages for the kingdoms' armies, which also serve in war between kingdoms. They are managed by the council of archmages. The golden mages is also known as the most powerful mages guild of the known world, better than even the high elves' Queynar. The third organization, the order of the divine, are a religious organization, which is responsible for the worship of the gods Arathis, Kord, and Peylor. While it is not uncommon to hear dwarven priests preaching for Moradin, or people revering Avandra or Bahamut, these gods are univesally revered in dylan, as "patron gods" of it. The order of the divine serves them, and manages their worship and temples, and to a lesser degree, it is responsible for all religious matters of dylan.
As a whole, all kingdoms of dylan are rather homogenous in racial divesity too, all consusting of about 55% humans, 25% dwarves, 15% elves, and 5% percent hobbits, with some rarer races in there too. In addition to this, there are several settlements of other races, including most of dylan's halflings, which exist in the kingdoms and pay tithes to the kingdom they are in, but are otherwise independent.the kingdoms consist of 8 great kingdoms, and a few dozens of smaller kingdoms and city states

I decided to do the survey in several pieces. This is tge first, involving the lands where you are now, and where the adventure will center for now at least. If you have any question about dylsn, feel free to ask

This seems a little self-contradictory. If they consider themselves above the petty struggles between kingdoms, why would they go out of their way to supply battlemages to help those petty struggles?

Theoretically, they could hire out battlemage mercenaries to the various kingdoms, based on a pointless and convoluted system of quotas, but... still, it stretches plausibility.
