Sector Verantis. It is a sector only recently liberated from the Arch Enemy. Eternally wreathed in desperate conflict for survival as the enemies of mankind assault it from all sides even still. It barely holds, but threats like Chaos Space Marines aligned with the Heretic empires of the so called 'Damned Sector' bordering it, probing advances of the Tau Empire, and scattered elements of Tyranid Hive Fleets threaten to rip it from Imperial Grasp once more. It's defenders are as fanatical and ruthless as they are desperate, and even that is barely enough to stem the tide. The Sector survives only because of the dual fanaticism and ruthlessness of it's leaders-Billions die, tyrants rule, and madness is the norm.

You are Imperial Guardsmen raised from Verantis' remaining loyalist worlds. You are soldiers raised, trained, and equipped to thrown into the meatgrinder like countless generations before you-and countless to follow. You are but one in an army of millions, insignificant in a clash of arms over dozens of worlds. It is your duty to hold the line against an approaching doom that seems inevitable. You are but mortal soldiers, but it falls to you to fight and die in a battlefield of Xenos monsters and Fallen Angels. But you are Imperial Guard, and you do not give up without a fight. You will have to abandon hope in victory-and embrace faith in the Emperor's salvation.

Abandon Hope, Embrace Faith is a 40k RPG campaign using a very heavily modified version of Fantasy Flight Games Imperial Guard based Only War system. It is heavily homebrewed because Only War is frankly an incredibly badly designed game with only a few useful ideas to use for this campaign.

Abandon Hope is set in a homebrew sector because I am highly dissatisfied with the 40k RPG's own settings. Verantis is a place of Fanaticism and Desperation both. It is a sector on the edge of collapse, and only held together by the fact that it's enemies fight eachother with as much ferocity as they destroy the sector, and the endless material and manpower being poured into it by neighboring sectors. It is the Imperium at it's most heroic and selfless, but also at it's most ruthless and senselessly fanatical. It is a realm where there is no peace, only War and the Laughter of Thirsting Gods.

This will not be a comedic or light hearted campaign, nor will it involve playing larger than life heroes. Characters will die, and they will die horrific and oftentimes meaningless deaths. Characters will be driven insane, will be maimed, and will watch as their comrades are killed. However, it is not all bad. No Guardsman faces the darkness alone, and while hope is in short supply, Faith shines ever brighter in the face of adversity.

The Regiment


Homeworld: Bolwerc is a Fortress World, relatively recently (Less than three hundred years ago) liberated from an attempt at subversion and revolt by the Tau Empire. Though this uprising was quickly defeated by the Imperial Guard and Adeptus Mechanicus, it has left it scars on the populace. Ashamed by their attempt at revolution, the people of Bolwerc have rededicated (And been educated) themselves to acting as a fortress world-and especially to hating the treacherous Xenos who had nearly damned them all.

Bolwerc is divided into numerous Cantons-fortress cities and districts that each can operate autonomously with their own PDF regiments and command structures in case of invasion. Every Bolwerc is trained from birth to be able to handle a Lasgun, and to hate the Xenos and Traitor. The culture is one of shame-every Bolwerc is also educated as to their forefathers failure and their duty to ensure such a thing never ever happens again. Bolwercs are naturally suspicious and conservative, paranoid of any possible hint of corruption.


Despite this, due to Mechanicus presence and location guarding important trade lanes, Bolwerc is wealthy and advanced-it's Guard regiments are well equipped-some even have cybernetics granted as a token of honor. Bolwercs are often well educated-though mostly in matters martial and of faith.

Regimental Culture: The 157th is a newly raised regiment-it has the extensive training and discipline instilled into every Bolwerc soldier, but not experience. Though most are outwardly anticipating glory and redemption for their shamed world, there is an undercurrent of unease-for most in the regiment have never seen combat themselves.

The Bolwerc ascribe to a melee heavy doctrine-it is said that the thrusting bayonet is what drove the freakish Tau from their world, and so the Bolwerc will honor their saviors by reaping a new toll of enemy blood with their own blades. Reach is favored-many sergeants even forgo a pistol to carry a two handed Chain Halberd and some squads even have an extra Halberd to augment their capability on the assault.

Given as they are to feats of heroics, the Bolwerc uniform looks the part-heavily shined Carapace Armor, with multicolored flak cloth on the less armored parts of the body. Officers often wear ostentatious hats, or add other decoration. This gives Bolwerc soldiers the appearance of a rainbow from a distance-soldiers from other regiments may scoff at such foolishness, but any who have witnessed a mass charge of Bulwerc Shock quickly change their mind.

Right, it looks like we're running the 157th Bolwerc Shock. I'll leave the poll open for a little while to see if we can break the tie on the second option in case I can get my second GM, but I will be running the Bolwerc.
 
Anyone wanna take medic per chance? Seems like were starting to look like a shock unit indeed with all the combat units we have.
 
Might change to weapons specialist and carry a chain glaive since that's the doctrine.
 
Changed the stat array to beginning at 25 and giving 60 70 points, because a friend pointed out beginning at 30 doesn't allow for much stat variation.

Bargainer
You may indulge your vices at half cost. You also gain a +10 to all tests to bargain with merchants.

Bodyguard
The character gains a free reaction that may only be used for uses of the Martyrdom special use of the Dodge skill. In addition, they may also parry attacks made against friendly characters within 2 meters of themselves.

Die-Hard
When you suffer from Blood Loss or mortal Fatigue, you may make Willpower Test to avoid death. You can also make Willpower test to use broken or useless limb as if it had not taken Damage. If you should become unconscious you may make Willpower Test to stay conscious, this applies even to unconsciousness caused by Fatigue, in which case you should roll again every 5 minutes.

Double-Team
Tier: 2
You fight best shoulder to shoulder with a loyal ally. When ganging up on an opponent with an ally, you gain an additional +10 bonus to Weapon Skill Tests. If you both have this Talent you both gain an additional +10 bonus, for a total of +20. This bonus is in addition to the normal bonuses gained from outnumbering an opponent.


Gallows Humor
Tier: 2
Requirements: Fellowship 35, Charm
Whenever you are suffering from a critical effect, suffering 3+ Fatigue, or otherwise in a very perilous situation (GM discretion), you may take a half action or a reaction to make a grim joke. Make a Charm test at (+0). On success, On success, any ally who can hear you may recover wounds as if the charm test were a first aid test (Or alternatively, one half DoS in fatigue). This test does nothing for actual critical effects. This may be done only once per battle or non combat encounter/situation.


Hatred (Tau, Traitors)

Hip shooting

As a Full Action, you may simultaneously move up to your Run Move rate and make an attack with any pistol and this attack suffers a -20 penalty. The attack can be a Standard Ranged Attack, Semi-Auto Fire or Full-Auto Fire. When making normal moving and shooting you only suffer half the penalties. If you also have Sidearm, you may make a free attack with your pistol at a -20 penalty whenever you charge. This attack is resolved before you resolve your charge attack


Keen Intuition
After failing an awareness test, the character may reroll the test with a -10 modifier.


Look Out Sir!
You add +20 when attempting Martyrdom on Higher ranked characters.

Nerves of Steel
You may re-roll a failed Willpower Test to avoid or recover from Pinning or Fear or similar shocking event.



Rapid Reaction
When Surprised or ambushed, you may make an Agility Test to act normally. You also add +1 to your Initiative rolls.

Rapid Reload:
You have spent so long practising weapons drills that you can reload a gun in an instant. All reload times are reduced by half (round down)—so a Half Action reload become a Free Action, a Full Action reload becomes a Half Action and so on.

Shock Trooper
They may dodge enemy Overwatch fire and shots from Suppressive fire.

Smooth Talker
Once per conversation, the character can re-roll one Charm or Deceive test.
Trait: Veteran (You may gain a +5 to any test if you describe how past experiences shape your response to the challenge (At GM allowance). While assisting non Veteran members of the Squad, you add +20.)

Backstory: Valentin was born into the large, extended Roschi family in the Winterthar canton on Bolwerc where he spent his early years in rambunctious play-fighting and assisting the family farm. Like many of his brothers and sisters however, he was inevitably called to service in the Bolwerc Federal Guard. The first years of his service were slow and quiet, primarily consisting of patrol and garrison duty. But as ever, Fortress Worlds are tested, and Valentin found himself in his first taste of combat during the siege of the Valais Canton. It was there he killed his first man, a young traitor he speared through the throat with a trench shovel. That was two decades ago-and it would not be the last. In recognition for his deeds, he would be outfitted with a set of sub-skin armor-a protective set that came to serve him well during a forlorn hope action against a Heretek cult at Cheir's Canyon. He soon became a sort of hero of his regiment-less for his deeds, and more for his kindness and humor and willingness to provide advice to the younger men in the unit.

Valetin is quick to boast of the victories and glories in a good natured and playful manner, the long nights along the campfires toasting his comrades-but his foremost tale is falling in love with a fellow member of the PDF, a medic by the name Feena Diem. Their marriage was a distant once until Feena was badly wounded after a boltgun misfired. It was only thanks to the intervention of the Mechanicus-and Valentin calling upon the honors earnt at the battle of Cheir's Canyon-that prevented her from being crippled for life. Retired from active service due to the extent of her injuries, she joined Valentin's regiment as a camp follower, and the two of them had two children-Vanessa who would be enlisted into the PDF, and young Jonas. It was Valentin's hope to retire to a peaceful life-but the Imperium ever needs more blood and more meat for its grinders. Both he and Vanessa were conscripted into the 187th Bolwerc Shock during its recent founding, and Diem and little Jonas would follow along as camp followers, with the former volunteering as an auxiliary nurse for the regiment's medicae staff. They've made the best of the transition, even if it has put any dreams they once had to ruin. For all his experience, Valentin is quietly terrified of what he may face beyond his homeworld-and what he stands to lose.

Personality: A gregarious and cheerful man who has never let his years of experience get him down. He considers the younger men and women in the regiment as children of a sort, and would fight hard to protect them. Even when his cheer fades away in the face of the nightmares among the stars, he tries to keep his demeanor up and reassure his comrades. He cares deeply for his wife and children, and looks forward to meeting them after every operation. He is not without his scars, however-He's an avid lho-addict and his fury against the Tau is deeply unsettling for someone usually so kindly. Those who get close to him may realize how deeply it hurts him that he may never see home again and he is terrified of losing his family. He prays every night for their safety, and donates extensively to local churches for their protection.

Appearance: A stocky man with a barrel chest and thick arms and legs, Valentin is over forty years of age but faster than he looks. His skin is tanned and weather worn from years of conflict, but the wrinkles that have begun to set in are ones from his ceaseless grins. He has a neatly trimmed mustache and beard that accentuates a carefully combed haircut. He never goes anywhere without his wedding band and a necklace of colored stones native to Bolwerc.

Immediate
Feena Diem Messerli: Tall and blond of hair, with green eyes and broad shoulders. Heavy augmetics-her right arm and eye are both bionic, and she has a bionic heart and lung. Metal playing and wires run up the side of her face and neck, and cover much of the right side of her chest. Wry and sarcastic, with a wicked sense of humor. No nonsense, though her bedside manner is excellent if one doesn't have a thin skin.

Her background is of somewhat higher class than Valentin, as she was a daughter of the Messerli merchant family on Bolwerc before she embraced the Federal Guard rather than a freeman farmer. She is now a surgeon in the regiment and (technically) an officer.

Vanessa: Black hair like her father, taking her height from her mother and muscle from her father. She's ambitious unlike her parents, a hunger for glory only tempered by an iron backing of discipline and professionalism. Her wargear is always immaculate, and she's always the first up at reveille. Won a number of rewards and trophies at her school, including markmanship and her school's Pitchhoop league.

Jonas: A young child far from old enough to even hope of being a Whiteshield. Mischievous and curious, with a growing passion and interest in the Imperial Creed. Blond haired and green eyes. Not very interested in the violence common in Bolwerc and Imperial culture.

Extended
Gunther Roschi: Valentin's brother, formerly a member of the Internal Guard. Broke his arm after falling off a roof.

Ciara Roschi: Valentin's grandmother, who served in the Cantonal Guard. Loved warfilms, especially old ones by famed actor Duke Marion Rouboute Morrison.

Lorin Roschi: Valentin's Great-Grandmother who served in the Astra Militarum for only five years before being shipped back to Bolwerc. Due to warp caused time dilation, she's only as old as Valentin's parents, despite them having been born after she left Bolwerc.

Urban Roschi: Valentin's father, who served as a bodyguard for a Colonel in the Imperial Guard. A hardened veteran, who had faced and survived myriad foes, including the Broken Pact, before he mustered out back to Bolwere. Valentina was his third wife.

Valentina Roschi: Valentin's mother, whom he was named after. Served in the Imperial Guard with distinction before being sent home after a bloody campaign against the Tyranids. Ironically, lost her arm to a Grox in retirement.

Alyssa Messerli: Valentin's Step-Mother, and a successful merchant. Suffers severe scarification due to a chemical spill at an arms production factory. Valentin got along with her well, and greatly enjoyed her homemade recaf.

Backstory: My father was a war Hero. As such great things have always been expected of me. When I was young I often got into fist fights as others said I would never be as great as him. As I grew older my father, now retired took me under his wing. It was not a gentle tutoring, most days involved me getting my ass kicked for not shooting well enough. Still I learned even if the lessons were not easy. As soon as I was of age I enlisted, I have a legend to live up to after all.

Personality:Driven to prove himself more than his fathers shadow. Very direct, and believes in following orders and regulation to a fault. He also feels it is his duty to protect his comrades, as the father was the only survivor of his squad, and he wishes not to repeat that. With that duty in mind he can be a bit of a nag checking that others are prepared, gear well maintained and training regularly.

The Noble House of Lundberg was a (relative) newcomer to the political realm of Bolwerc, having only rose to prominence recently after one of the Malmström daughters married into the House as a gesture of gratitude for countless years of loyal service as Retainers to the Malmström family. With this alliance came an era of expansion for the Lundberg family, both in the size of their Estate and their influence upon the Strudite Canton in which both families reside, as well as strengthening of the bond between the two Houses. It is a period of plenty for what had until then been a House of minor Nobility and the Lundbergs were definitely keen to let everyone know that as they mingled with the older, more prestigious Houses, ekeing out their place amongst the shakers and movers of Bolwerc

Henrik, however, would not come to feel much of his family's wealth. As one of the many countless children in their large family of twelve siblings (tenth, in fact!), the young man would have little in the way of inheritance and many older siblings whose shadows he would have to struggle to overcome. What he did have, however, was a keen eye for detail and a knack for the arcane field of Technomancy (in part due to a voracious appetite for reading); traits that Henrik would leverage as he spent his meager fortune for lessons with the local Mechanicus in the hopes of joining their ranks one day.

Fate would have other plans, however, as the call for able-bodied men and women came out with the raising of the newly-formed 157th Bolwerc Shock Troopers. Sensing an opportunity for advancement, Henrik leveraged his experience and contacts from serving in the Federal Guard in order to volunteer for the Regiment not soon after in the hopes of attaining glory and prestige that wouldn't likely be found elsewhere. With his particular skillset, the young man would be trained in the art of Demolitions and other Military Technomata before being sent with the Regiment off-world. Off-world to fight for the God Emperor, and for the glory of Bolwerc.

Though born and raised as one of the Nobility, Henrik is not as given to frivolity or hubris as his peers. His impoverished state for a Noble has taught the man the value of frugality and of merit, lessons earned by necessity as he does not enjoy the same level of influence and wealth as his (many) older siblings. He does have a taste for fine Recaf, however, and will happily indulge this from time to time.

A driven man by nature, Henrik will rarely decline an opportunity to prove himself in the eyes of his peers and his superiors. Otherwise, he is polite to strangers and genial to friends. An easy person to get along with, all in all.

Standing at 5' 8" (somewhat-short for a man by Bolwerc standards) with a wiry frame, Henrik is not the most physically imposing of Guardsmen. His blonde hair, neatly trimmed to within regulations, fair skin and lack of facial hair apart from a prominent stubble make him look younger than his mid-twenties age would suggest. Sharp brown eyes and an angled face give the young man a hawkish look, especially when thinking intently as he is wont to do.

If one were to take a closer look, one would see that Henrik's ears are have been cybernetically augmented thanks to the Mechanicus support that Bolwerc enjoys. The young man, knowing that ear problems are a common problem among Guardsmen due to the sheer amount of noise on the battlefield, sought to address that.

The Malmström family holds itself in the Strudite Canton, its sigil is that of cross marked by two crossing swords overlapping each other.
Adalicia was the first born of the current head lord of the family, by her birthright she'd be the heir to the family once her father passed away or chose to end his hold early. Status in mind she received the benefit of being born in high nobility with the martial arts of the sword and the lance being taught to her along with the trade of paper, coin and transactions coming along the package. She wasn't the kind to care much for parties, though as the legitimate heir she had to do her obligation to meet and greet suitors as well as family friends who paid tribute to her.

Though as some time passed with the young lady of the house would come to a bit of a shock, a sibling was born and it was a boy. Her sibling was a brother, and much as her father loved her he had always wanted a son. Annoyed and irritated would be the proper descriptors that defined Adalicia, years passing by with her claim as heir seemed to slowly pass as her sibling grew with the favor of her father. Many a times she had thought of getting rid of the hindrance that was her brother, but the ethics taught to her said that being a Kinslayer was far more shameful that being overtaken in the line of succession.

Adalicia needed to bide her time well if she were to make a name for herself, connections needed to be made so parties needed to be attended too. Though while in the process of attending to one such party the Canton was beset by a riot, one that was instigated by a minor noble family whom was demoted to such status after they played a part in the rebellion hundreds of years ago. Angry shouts and the sound of steel were deafened when she came out of the convoy with a sword drawn, the house guards coming to take their positions in protecting the family.

Steel and las would meet flesh as she valiantly and ferociously defended the convoy, her efforts fruitful as the armored vehicles were dislodged thought it would come with a price. House guards were torn and killed while Adalicia herself suffered burns on her right side from a firebomb as well as some autogun wounds, nonetheless after their escape the local PDF would quell the rioters with the Canton's government executing the minor house before liquidating its assets. In the end Adalicia was praised for her efforts by that of her family, aid would pour in to help for her recovery to become quick.

Eventually her wounds would heal and only leave scars, reminding the noble that she was close to death more than anyone else. Though as Adalicia was busy with planning her next steps in establishing connections the commander of the PDF came by to ask for the former heir to volunteer in the Bolwerc Federal Guard. Having nothing else to work on during that time she decided to volunteer, her training by the master-at-arms of the house gave her an edge in her training. Time came when she'd finish training and the rank of sergeant would be given to her, to celebrate this Lord Malmström then gifted her with a cranial armor implant for her achievement.

The announcement of the 157th​ Bolwerc Shock was a chance that Adalicia could not pass on, signing up immediately she was told that a squad would under her as soon as more volunteers or recruits came. The thought of bringing glory back home makes her eager, though the fear of whatever horror she may face keeps her alert as her need for glory might end up with her dead.

Strong willed and stubborn, Adalicia yearns to bring back something that would make give her something to be proud about. Highborn she might be she cares for those who work under her, the lass always making sure their properly fed and trained. Whenever she maybe free napping would be something she's fond off, smoking lho,drinking fine amasec and feeding on delicious gourmet always comes second to that of her nap. Thoughts on traitors have a tendency to begin and end with a sword, after the ruckus that had sent the Strudite Canton into chaos she only thinks of a blade as the only atonement a backstabber gets. Never has she seen an alien before but her judgement is the same, if their not man and they do not follow the Imperium they die like the rest. Adalicia also has a deep seated respect for those of old age and still serve the Guard fruitfully, wisdom and enlightenment they always carry with them from their long service.



Aged only at 28 years old Adalicia stands at a height of 5'10", her build,= slim, toned and muscled from the training of her master-at-arms back home and that of her Guard training. The right side of her face still carry the scars from the firebomb attacking during the right along with some of her right arm and side. Her hair tied into a clean bun as it radiates with the hue of gold, eyes on the other hand were a shining silver.
