Chapter Twenty-Six
I had a Scroll call to make. It was not going to be a happy Scroll call, but it wasn't like I had much of a choice.
I stood on Beacon Academy's rooftop, enjoying the stars and the bright, shattered moon. The Scroll call connected within seconds. If I picked up my Scroll in less than a minute, then Cinder would panic. If Cinder did the same, then I would be the one panicking. It was a matter of priorities, after all.
"Darling," Cinder said, sounding saccharine to the extreme. She also wasn't putting up a show. It simply meant there was no one around her and she could freely act as she pleased. And Cinder, deep within her, was a romantic in love. "Is something the matter?"
"That depends, love-dove," I answered back. "I just-well, it sounds kind of strange, but...one of my teammates threw me under the bus, metaphorically speaking."
"Do I have to kill someone?" Cinder asked next, the sweetness leaving the place to the evil villain that would kill a puppy without batting an eyelid. Truly, Cinder was the master of mood-swings sometimes; something she had learned from Salem, no doubt.
"He set me up on some kind of apology date?" I mused, "Is that the right word for it? When someone wants to apologize to you, and they offer you tea or something like that?"
"Uhm...is it a man, or a woman?" Cinder asked once more, mulling the thought.
"Pretty sure it's a woman," I said. "Which is why I'm calling you, love-dove. I don't expect anything more than being offered a cup of tea or hot chocolate, but you never know-"
"You did well in telling me," Cinder said. "I will have Emerald keep an eye out on the proceedings. It is not that I do not trust you, but you do have the unfortunate habit of being too kind to people around you, and that leads to problems." She hummed a soft melody as she lost herself in thoughts. "I may require your presence later in the week. We have somewhere to be," she added. "And I may need an escort."
"Emerald and Mercury not enough?" I asked, "Something big?"
"You could say so," Cinder acquiesced. "We have to meet a friend to our cause."
"A friend? Seriously?" I muttered.
"Yes, keep yourself free this weekend, and wear something suitable for a high class meeting," Cinder mused. "But remember that we are not going to make friends with this person for longer than necessary."
"Understood," I acquiesced. "By the way love-dove," I mumbled, "I love you."
"I'll never tire to hear that," Cinder replied with a gentle giggle. "But tell me more about this teammate of yours that gave you away without asking my explicit permission. Is he afraid of fire, perhaps?"
I winced at that. "He was honorable enough to mention that I should reveal it was his idea in order to pacify you, love," I mused. "Maybe have mercy on his foolishness?"
"I am unsure about that," Cinder said. "Though I cannot wait to be in your arms once more."
"And I cannot wait to hold you in mine," I muttered back.
Whispering sweet nothings for half an hour left me pretty much into a world of my own, which was why I didn't notice the figure behind me until they pretty much coughed to get my attention. I turned and raised an eyebrow at the sight of Pyrrha, who had apparently gone for a stroll and ended up on the rooftop. "Got to go love dove," I said with a giggle. "See you soon."
The telltale sound of a kiss being blown had me return it, and then I closed the call.
"Pyrrha," I said with a smile. "How are you?"
Pyrrha smiled, "Fine," she said. "I guess that was the missus?"
"That she was," I said with a smile. "If I don't call her once a day she gets worried."
"I see," Pyrrha said, giggling at that. "It must be nice to have a relationship like that," she added.
"Oh? Something the matter?" I asked.
Pyrrha glanced sideways, "In...in a matter of speaking," she said. She came to a halt by my side, glancing at the view of the city of Vale in the far off distance. "I never did get to thank you for what you did."
"I? I did absolutely nothing, carrot-top," I answered back with a chuckle.
"You saw a stupid girl thinking stupid stuff and called her out on it," Pyrrha said, "That's...that's not nothing."
"Anyone could have done that," I said with a sigh. "Ruby would have probably done that."
"But you were the one who did it first, without hesitation," Pyrrha said. "When Cardin bullied Jaune, you didn't let it keep happening. You made him stop. When he went for another victim, you stopped him again." She smiled, "Any of us could have done it, none of us did. So, I wanted to thank you."
"You came all the way up to this particular rooftop to thank me?" I asked.
Pyrrha giggled, "Well, that and to tell you that one of the rooms below it is ours, and we'd really like to get some sleep going on."
"You thank him for me too, Pyrrha!" Ruby exclaimed from the window below. I blinked at that, and then chuckled. "But then tell him to shush it because I got cavities from hearing him talk!"
"Aw, Ren! Do you think someone will ever call me sweet things like Shade does to his wife?" Nora's voice came next.
"I think they might, considering the average sweetness of your pancakes, you might actually be for the most part made of sweets," Ren's voice came with an amused tone to it.
"Aw, shucks!" Nora giggled next. "But seriously, I want my beauty sleep!"
"I'll find another place to call my love-dove during the night then," I muttered with a snicker. I glanced at Pyrrha, "Just don't take me as a role model," I grinned as I said that, "Because in truth, I'm evil to the core."
Pyrrha giggled at that, and rolled her eyes. "Sure," she said with a smile. "Good night, Shade."
"Good night, Pyrrha, rest of team Runner," I said, "See you for the morning lessons tomorrow."
And when the afternoon rolled about the next day, I found myself standing by Vale's central square with an amused expression on my face. I could see Emerald nearby, and she was giving me a bright smile and a tiny wave of the hand. I returned the wave and winked at her, before standing in wait patiently for what felt like an hour, but were probably no more than fifteen minutes.
I did sincerely hope that Strawhat lady just wanted to offer me a tea or something at a nearby cafe.
Somebody ran into the square from a nearby alleyway, somehow grabbed hold of my hand, and then began to pull me along. I briefly looked at Emerald's wide-eyed face, which was a mirror of mine, and then I conveniently decided to just follow the stranger holding my hand.
A few rushed minutes later, and I realized we were in another side-alley, where a dark-haired girl looked up at me with green eyes. There was a backpack on her back, from which a small part of something white seemed to have been hastily thrown inside.
I blinked at that.
The dress was frilly, all things considered. It wasn't white, but yellow. "Why did we have to run?" I asked.
"I apologize for that," Strawhat-lady said. "But there were some brutes pursuing me, and-"
I heard the sound of heavy footsteps from behind us, and strawhat lady hid behind my back as two Atlas soldiers pushed through the alley we had just been into, Penny's figure tailing them and looking around with a puzzled look.
"Excuse me citizen!" Penny said, nearing me. "Have you perhaps seen a white-haired young lady wearing a white dress with blue eyes?"
I blinked at that. "No, I'm afraid I have not," I said. "Good luck?"
"There is no luck involved in this search operation!" Penny retorted. Then she rushed off into a random direction with the Atlas soldiers following her.
"Well, that was a thing," I mused. "Guess if they've got the time to look for a girl, they could at least do something for the 'brutes' that were pursuing you."
"Y-Yes! Exactly," Strawhat lady said from behind me. "I'd feel much better if we went somewhere away from here," she added. "Perhaps a cafe on the other side of Vale?"
I chuckled, "Now that seems a bit excessive," I mused as I turned to look at her. The white cloth in her backpack had been further pushed down, until it had disappeared from sight. "Still, as long as they serve hot chocolate I'm fine with it."
"That is a surprisingly childish taste," the young lady said, "But it is quite all right," she coughed in her fist the next moment, "I'm doing this as an apology," she added. "So-Mister Shade Night, if you wish for hot chocolate we will have hot chocolate."
I smiled at that. "Thank you very much, young miss." I snickered as I said that. "I can call you Snow, right?"
"I-I'd like that," Snow answered back. "It's my name after all...Snow, Snow White." Oh.
Oh dear.
Snow White.
Cinder Ella.
Gods.
What next?
Somebody called Aurora? Or perhaps someone called Ariel?
Still, as I followed the young girl through the streets of Vale, I dimly realized that she had no idea where we were going, and her sense of direction was actually pretty terrible. "Would you rather I show you a neat little cafe?"
"Sure, of course," Snow answered with a faint blush on her face. "I've-I've been following you all this time, after all."
I chuckled at that.
With me holding the metaphysical reins of our walking, I found a quiet place where ordering something to drink and snack on wasn't going to immediately poison us. Snow left her backpack by the side of her chair, and as I looked at the menu I grinned at the hot chocolate being offered.
"You do know you didn't have to go this far to apologize to me, right?" I asked.
"I did," Snow said instead, "I showed a horrible side of myself that day, and I will not let it happen ag-" she coughed, and shook her head. "I prefer to part on amiable terms with people."
I gave her a quiet nod. "I suppose you're here for the Vytal Tournament?"
"Something of the sorts," Snow answered. "I-I admit I was at the docks to spy on the competition," she added with a sly grin, "And I was surprised when I was told another person had my same idea. Great minds think alike, as the saying goes."
I rolled my eyes. "I don't think I'm much of a great mind. I'm more of a smasher, reason I've got a big sword to do the thinking for me."
"Maybe so," Snow said, "But there's a charming quality in strength too-"
The small talk continued for a while, even as I felt my Scroll buzz from messages and not calls.
It would have been rude to answer them...
...and I was relatively sure that Emerald couldn't have possibly lost sight of us in the mayhem now, could she?
