Esquestria: The House of the Sun - A pony cultist experience

Voted best in category in the Users' Choice awards.
Dear reader! Whether you are new here, archive-reading and whatnot, or you are already someone who has been with us for quite a while, I would like to say a few words that I believe are best kept close to mind.

-This is an MLP quest. And more importantly, none of us are gratuitously cruel. So good things will happen on this quest, and I hope that enough good things have already happened to prove that.
-This is also a horror quest, so bad things will happen. Bad things might happen to good characters if you are not able to protect them, and you most certainly will not be able to intervene if you lack the tools to do so.
-And finally, this is a quest in which you jostle with powers greater than yourself, with all that it entails.

Please, do keep those things in mind as you go forward. But ultimately, this is also a quest in which it is hoped we all have fun! So if any of the above points is not exactly your cup of tea, or somehow make the experience as a whole "not worth it", then this quest might not be for you. Which is fine! Individual tastes are a thing, so don't think any more about it if you don't want to read anymore. And regardless, I hope you have a lovely day!

PSA for whoever needs to hear it:

Readers should take their own mental health into consideration when voting and not subject themselves to triggering narrative elements like rape or constant mental torture of a friend just for the Greatest Good of a world that doesn't exist.

If those are fine for you or Regrettable is even more triggering, then GREAT! More power to you. But you aren't a bad or selfish person for picking the option that keeps the characters you've emotionally connected with safe. [REDACTED for spoiler warning]

This is a high intensity quest that doesn't hold back when it comes to horror and negative consequences. Take care of yourself.

We did also just find something that hints we should get more Heart. Just a thought.

Also I'll note that Confidantes *aren't* the maximum level of social bond. :V
Counterpoint: when visiting the Ruined Church, Grail was kind of the last thing we needed for its obstacles (though it gave us extra health against Mareinette... but I have to wonder, would she have reacted so strongly if we didn't have it in the first place?)

It's likely we'd benefit more from bringing the influence that subverts Heart instead. That's Grail, right? That would make it doubly useful because we really could use more diplo bonuses...

As for Soft vote, it seems it might be the vote on what, effectively, will become her affinity, unless she is like us now, omnilore genius. Which she might be. On one hand, I don't like Winter, because it is the closest to Wolf of the option given. On the other hand, I don't really, like "blood" or "blindness" either, really, and "ice" seems to be quite positive in comparison.

"Follow her heart" is either the best, or the worst option, because one might say that it is simply right for parent to let their kids grow in the direction they choose. One also might say that Soft's Heart might not be hers anymore, as that one has stopped, and we replaced it with stolen and bound pieces of the Wolf, and that she has asked us to help her. To be honest, I am not exactly willing to risk it.

If we could, I would have suggested Knock. Wounds are not nice, but they are probably nicer than Lantern, and I don't want to give her Winter or Grail.

Something to think about.
I'm tempted by Grail, personally. It's more or less the opposite of the Wolf, with him being a creature of Pain and Agony while Grail is also about pleasure.

To quickly summarize an answer to this and others:
-Upgrading a social bond will pick one of the following. Applejack, Filthy Rich, Cheerilee or Mayor Mare.
-Attempting to meet somepony new will warrant you at least one new acquaintance who is currently in Ponyville. I will stick to ponies I deem "relevant" but my list is WAY larger than what you might think. To be clear, this does not guarantee "pink pone get".

Edit: also, good night.

I'm about 50% convinced Pinkie doesn't exist in this History somehow at this point.

yeah, the upgrades are the ones I expected.

for new ones... I'll guess a few:

  • Spoiled Rich/Milk (stuck-up wife of Filthy Rich)
  • Pinkie Pie
  • Rainbow Dash
  • Octavia and/or Vinyl (doesn't Jade live with them?) (classical musician with cello and DJ)
  • Bon Bon (ex secret agent Sweety Drops) and Lyra Heartstring (former classmate of Twilight, actually)
  • The Cakes (own the place Pinkie works at, Sugarcube Corner)
  • Snowflake/Bulk Bycepts (super-muscular pegasus. I can't remember which one is the canon name and which is the fanon one)
  • Derpy/Ditzy Hooves (Derpy was changed to Ditzy because it was deemed to be offensive. She also initially had a really weird voice that led to even more accusations)
  • Time Turner (earth pony scientist. Fanon often has him be a regeneration of THE Doctor (from Doctor Who, in case it wasn't clear)
  • Granny Smith and/or Big Mac, Applejack's grandmother and big brother.
  • Nurse Redheart. just the local nurse
  • whatever the local doctor is called. I THINK It's "Doctor Horse", but I'm kinda hoping I remember wrong.
I... can't think of anyone else who'd be around right now. I would have loved it if we could meet Zecora (the zebra shaman living in the Everfree Forest), but I think she's currently still feared. We might meet her in an expedition to the Castle of the Two Sisters maybe...

Do you think getting a level 4 heart influence is to get Heart 4 is a good idea?

Given how scraps work and how higher scrap are both harder and more expensive to get I was under the impression we'd wait intill we reach level 4 heart before getting the max heart influence and it's 2 scraps.
In theory you're right, but in practice I think at this point getting a lvl 4 earlier is more valuable than waiting for the perfect moment to reach ready-to-sacrament lvl.

Also it gives us a better ability to plan due to learning the personal and summon related requirements for the Sacrament.

also also... we really should go on more expeditions to get more high level lore books that way. We've basically outgrown shops for the most part, and at this point a single lvl 4 book costs nearly as much as an expedition likely to grant multiple books and/or artifacts.

and we could REALLY benefit from more artifacts to allow our confidants to do rituals for us, and the extra effects are also nice.

...on that note, we still have a knock 2 artifact with unknown abilities, Two lvl 3 FORGE books, the Lvl 6 Lantern book (but it will give only 1 scrap as we got the other ones from translating it), and an UNKNOWN book to decipher which might NOT be a lore book (I'm guessing it could be either narrative lore, or maybe a ritual...)

that's enough for... 2 actions, I think. One for three books, one for a book + the Artifact.

and to note, the Lantern book WILL bring us to lvl 4 Lantern, giving us the reroll and knowledge of the sacrament requirements.
Well not everything can be solved with occult power no?
That's sound like someone without enough occult power!

You can actually tell what books give what based on the portrait colour, name of author and descriptor. Don't unnecessarily do the Woods it's useless, stick to the White Door as it has better rewards, less Restlessness sources and is one of two sources of Favours (Sage Knight Lodge). These are very useful in a detective run or well any run really.

If you can craft a painting with an aspect matching your cult you can easily raise all initiates to disciples.

What cult do you have btw?

(Also kill the older Alden if you haven't already, don't bother killing the older one)
I think I mistook a few Heart Books for Grail.

I mostly did Woods to read the blurbs, I had time to waste, and I have plenty of Favours from capturing suspects anyway.

I never had to use any. I don't want the minor victory for it, and the Detective only came up with Tentative Evidence ONCE.

I'm also avoiding killing him, because I vaguely remember he's replaced by worse ones, and to try and recruit him, because I remember he becomes worse.

I'm avoiding using my ingredients for paint yet, as I wanted to have multiple ones. Right now I only have the Forge 4 lore and lack a Forge tool, so I kinda had to use some Bronze Spintria to upgrade not-forge Cultists. I also don't have Forge ingredients beside the spintria sadly.

ah, I have Forge cult as I said. I'm going slowly, but I'm having fun. I'm avoiding guides right now, and I even just summoned my first creature, a Voiceless Dead.

I only just unlocked the clerical job JUST to see how killing him works.

I have yet to read the latest update, but it just occurred to me. We just voted to encourage a ton of ponies to move to Ponyville. Pinkie Pie throws a party for every new arrival.

Did we just sentence Pinkie Pie to die due to overwork?
That's just Divine Punishment for not giving us a welcome to ponyville party!
[X] Go talk to ponies you already know. After all, just because you haven't been in touch, it doesn't mean you aren't interested in how they are doing. (Raise your social bond with a single random pony you already know)

I admit, I'm hoping for a Filthy Rich or Mayor Mare rank up. I just think they'd be really useful for us to get as Confidants, and a rank up here means one less AP we have to spend to get there.

That being said, I'd be fine with any of the options going up. I've mentioned before that I think Cherilee is currently our best option for the Moth Sacrament, and getting another Element of Harmony as a Confidant (eventually) would be funny.
Yeah, all four are good for the reasons you mention.

the Mayor, influence on the town, really good confidant/friend to have, could assist MANY actions in Ponyville

Filthy Rich, again influence on the town and potential source of funds/investments

Cherilee. The worse one of the lot, but good to keep an eye on rumors and the kids, and the best option for Moth Sacrament we currently have

and Applejack, another Element to bring to our side, leaving only Rainbow Dash and Pinkie Pie as unknown (and Twilight as... well, we'll see how the talk will go)

I do have a question, why do people think that a leashed confidant counts for the Moth Sacrement? Did Birb leave a WoG or…? Because this seems like something cheats that a QM may bap us for even if out of quest or as an actual punishment waste the AP.
Yeah, it was my idea at the time I think and I vaguely remember he saying it would work.

[x] Give her a pep talk of Grail, to encourage her further.

I want to try the "pleasure" based lore, and see what happens. This time I don't want to let her do as she wishes. She came to us, if she knew she wouldn't ask.

I'm leaning towards new contact in the hope of getting another of the Elements on our side (AND MAYBE FINALLY MEET PINKIE PIE), or maybe Spoiled Rich as a "easy sacrifice" for moth sacrament, but current contact has potential too.
…At this point, I honestly wouldn't be surprised if the Master CONSUMED Pinkie Pie for whatever plan they're implementing. Being (regarded as) an extremely-unpredictable Element of Harmony has its benefits.

50 chapters later is revealed the Master is just Pinkie Pie in a dramatic cloak and all this magic lore business was just one big practical joke to get the local Noble out of her shell. And then the quest ends in a dance number.

[X] Just soak in the atmosphere. The laughter, the music, the hoofsteps of ponies as they dance. You really could get used to this. (Gain one scrap of Heart Lore)

[X] Teach her the patience of Winter, so she learns how to pace herself.

[X] Tell her that she should follow her heart, and speak about whatever comes to mind. You believe in her, so you are sure that whatever she feels inspired to do will be better than anything you suggest.

The bindings should hold, for now. The seed planted is not a tree grown. Not yet.

Other than that,
I do have a question, why do people think that a leashed confidant counts for the Moth Sacrement? Did Birb leave a WoG or…? Because this seems like something cheats that a QM may bap us for even if out of quest or as an actual punishment waste the AP.
In fact, there was one:
That is a valid question, and I can completely see how a QM could either say "of course yes" and "of course no".

Leashing a good friend into Confidant, and then using them for Moth Sacrament, is both legal and encouraged.

It is also very cruel, as these things go.

Frankly the Heart scrap is not worth getting closer to another confidant. More AP means we can get more scraps, because we can do more things.

And tell her to follow her Heart, we already missed the chance to make her a useful, so commit to the path of true recovery.

Will we have the time to build those specific targets io to Confidant, though? We know this choice gives us one of four people, none of whom are currently close friends.
That is the logic that keeps us from raising friends into Confidantes and harvesting their sweet sweet AP. We already know that right now is going to be Velvet's least busy period work-wise, so now is the time to invest in relationships in a bid to get more AP. And someone raised to Good Friend is only one step away from willingly burying a body with us.

Also I am still kicking myself over Starry, curse you hindsight.

Killing him or recruiting him will mean a new Detective that's better at the job shows up. Also he only becomes worse if you fuck up the recruitment.

Also if you haven't decided on a Ascension path then choose Forge. It's the easiest of the base games.

Lets hope the rules of the kinder universe are in play.

Not gonna vote to feed the wolf.

I can't really get enough of a read on the Soft vote to make a good guess at what would be good, so I don't find myself caring too much, but I am really tired of Heart lagging behind all the time, and I want to see what it's Sacrament is like. Also I just like the idea of Velvet sitting down and just... vibing, you know?

Just to point it.
There was invisitext in this update.

Which annoys me a great deal. Also, no follow you heart because of it.

There's... invisitext in a lot of Esquestria updates. I get not liking it, and I'm not saying you shouldn't, but it's kinda the price we pay with this quest.

I know this probably will not win but a chance to meet a NEW FRIEND is always worth aiming for.

Honestly I'm more inclined to Winter, but the whole Wolf thing makes me wary of pushing her toward Winter, and lantern is without mercy.

I'd be fine with most of the vote options (Except for the Grail one), but here's what I choose.

what even is the problem with invisitext? There's an option to have it appear, and there's a symbol to warn you if a post has it!

top right corner of the post, beside the share/bookmark buttons and the post number, there's the eye simbol when the post contains invisitext

click it, make sure the eye is "crossed" by a diagonal line, and the invisitext will be made visible and uncoverable with a click/tap

To be honest I never noticed that option until you just mentioned it
