Zayden Quest 2: Angrier, Drunker, Still In Space

Update 8: This Fought Me
beh. This one… fought me a bit so it's a bit short in places compared to normal. Sorry about that.

=====

It's become something of a routine at this point for the dwarf. Get up, put on your clothes, eat your breakfast, consult the list, make your choice, move on with your day. There's a comfort to it that helps to keep him focused on things other than the complete and utter lack of-

He shakes his head. Sparkling has already left for the day with nary a word and Vera went out earlier to get started on her own share of work. Best he just stop worrying and get on with it. It's a break from mining for the day. Seems only sensible, the crews in charge of the safety equipment were scrambling last he saw of them. Zayden nodded at that thought and grimaced a bit. He may have overestimated their abilities without the proper equipment and overextended into the mines a wee bit too much.

Well. That'll be changing soon enough. He hefts his pack onto his shoulders and steps foot out the door of the room he's been sharing with Vera and Sparkling. Best get to work then.

----

Advanced Forging

Zayden sat in the chair, oversized for one of his stature, and stared at the mass of metal and glass before him. Without even needing to consult the list of instructions, he sighed and began the laborious process of deconstructing the object. He had, yet again, assembled the materials in the wrong order.

When he'd signed up to work on this particular bit of projects he'd made a… Rather incorrect conclusion based on what he'd seen of its requirements. The dwarf had assumed that this would be a job requiring engineering skills and to some very limited extent this was true! There were tools involved, tools he recognized. The problem, however, was the matter of scale.

Namely that he was having to carefully assemble frighteningly small components into a greater whole. That… That was not something he had much experience with. The box of stuff next to him had dwindled since he'd started working but a chunk of those pieces had been wasted on failure after failure. The one consolation Zayden had in the midst of all of this was that he'd not been the only one making these mistakes.

A brief glance towards some other tables where a few dwellers sat showed they were having an even rougher time of things than he himself was. Another table with a mander sat by themselves had a constant deluge of rather violently creative swears. Not a single fully assembled component had come out of that table so far and it looked as though a few of the people overseeing the project were working up the courage to ask that particular assembler to leave.

The sounds of the room, aside from the swearing from the one table, were those of people diligently and quietly working away. It was a very clean room, all things considered, which made sense the dwarf knew. Some of the components did involve actual honest to gods circuitry and that was very, very finnicky in his experience.

A gloved hand reached up and rubbed at his eyes, trying desperately to get the exhaustion and strain out of them. Glaring at the components was beginning to take something of a toll on him. If it wouldn't instantly drown him he'd just shove his head outside and hold his eyes open to let the water moisturize the tender meat. With a sigh, he leaned back forward and got back to work.

The sooner this was done, the better.

Suiting Up

Clever Claws Work The Forge stared in genuine pride at the sight set before her. It was a masterwork this suit of armor. It had been crafted with meticulous care and attention to detail, each stitch deftly made with her claws on the needles. The plating was laid atop a waterproof lining that had been made to withstand caustic fluids that could be found in the mines. The helmet was constructed to allow for an ease of vision, to insert something to light the area in front of the wearer's head, be made airtight in case of pockets of gas, and was surprisingly lightweight in spite of it all. She'd even had time to make the damned thing pretty yet functionally safe for visibility with a set of artistically placed reflective yellow stripes.

It was gorgeous. And the fact it was completed so early was owed primarily to the source of inspiration for this project in the first place who, even now, was standing stoically in the corner with his arms stretched out to either side. The dwarf grumbled and complained at first but once he'd settled down into being a model for his own suit of armor the work had gone smoothly. The designs had simply flowed from Clever Claws mind and from there the pieces had been produced, assembled, and made into one glorious whole.

Many Dwellers had already been by for fittings and the first of the armored suits were being dispatched for the mining crews to wear. They'd been surprisingly silent during their visits, eyes straying to where her assistant in this matter was still standing. Clever Claws breathed out, satisfied with her work for the day. Turning towards Zayden, she waved at him. "Friend, your work today has been greatly and deeply appreciated. Thank you and have a good day."

There was silence from the dwarf in response. She tilted her head and walked towards him. "Zayden? Are you quite alright?"

When she got up close to him she heard it. The sound of a quiet snoring, muffled by the helmet still firmly on his head. Ah. Well, hopefully he wouldn't be too stiff to walk out of here when she woke him up.

(Suiting Up completed! Dwellers are now beginning to do Uncommon Mining on their own! Some Rare Elements Mining is being done!)

Delilah's Present

It had been a nightmare getting this group put together, Delilah thought. A nightmare that, sadly, was still ongoing given the arguments all around. Their fellow Dwellers had taken to the project with a gusto that, although admirable, was ill-served by their own inexperience with construction of this sort. The manders, helpful though they were, kept insisting on pausing and taking notes about all sorts of things about the device. The behooved, at first helpful, had begun to insist on confiscating the thing taking shape before them. Their motive for this was 'safety and health concerns' regarding what the device was meant to produce.

Delilah had to admit that there was some degree of trepidation in their own mind regarding this 'still' as Vera had called it. Knowing that it was apparently SUPPOSED to produce those toxic things they'd read about was… Disturbing. It was only a trust in Vera's words and relationship with Zayden that had kept Delilah planted firmly between the arguing behooved and the still. The whole situation was looking like it would devolve pretty soon, however, as one particular behooved stomped forward. The red and black striped stallion took a deep breath, looking ready to try and shove Delilah out of the way…

"Heya Delilah." Came the voice from the right, surprising all present. Startled, Delilah looked to the side and down. Standing there, eyebrows furrowed, was the squat figure this whole operation had been put together for. The stranger known as Zayden Rahl. "What's this yer workin' on?"

Sputtering, Delilah couldn't think of anything to say. The stallion, however, could. "This awful thing they're working on is some kind of poison maker!" He bellowed, gesturing towards the still. "They-"

"Shut it." A finger jabbed against the startled stallion's face. "Weren't askin' ye, was askin' them. Now hush." Zayden said, looking back past Delilah at the machine, a strange look on his face. "Looks familiar, whatever it is."

"I-it's a still." Delilah answered finally. The snap of the dwarf's full attention on them was a shock to the system but the Dweller rallied with a nervous gulp. "I-I-I remembered how nothing you had to drink when I bumped into you a few nights ago seemed to be anything you actually liked so I asked around."

"And made something that'll poison him!" The stallion accused again, stomping forward… And immediately getting a face full of angry dwarf.

"I. Said. Shut. Up." Zayden hissed out. His head turning almost a full one-hundred and eighty degrees, he fixed Delilah with a stare that would haunt their dreams forever. "How soon till it's finished?"

Looking around the assembled crowd, Delilah found no support except from one mander panickedly holding up two claws. "T-two days?" A shake of the head, rapidly. "T-two hours maybe?" Nodding. "Two, yes, two hours! Then it'll be done."

"Oh thank fuck." Came the mumbled response. "Finally, I can start getting some proper booze."

(Delilahs' been working on a still. Soon, Zayden might actually be able to get some booze.)

Select Two Different Tasks for Zayden to pursue from the list

[] Common Mining: The priority list, as Vera has called it, asks for some common materials to be mined up and delivered to the eggheads in the school to make use of. Now, the materials are common in nature so getting them's not hard. The hard part is more so the sheer VOLUME of materials needed. Zayden could admit he was skilled as a miner but there was still that age old bottleneck known as 'logistics' that would forever slow things down. In other words, he can only carry so much realistically speaking. Still, may as well start making a dent in it now. (8/40 Progress. Passively gains +1 each turn from Dwellers digging away on their own.)

[] Uncommon Mining: There's a call for some more… uncommon elements to be dug up from the ground. With the Dwellers more appropriately equipped for handling the dangers of mining out these elements progress is going by much more quickly! (7/25 Progress. Passively gains +1 every turn from Dwellers digging away on their own.)

[] Rare Mining: The seriously dangerous stuff, the rare elements, are only now being cautiously mined by the bravest of the Dwellers. Even then it's extremely slow going to say the least. Apparently the stuff in question is highly reactive magically speaking and it's a concern even for Zayden with his own equipment to consider going for it. Still, it's necessary to build… Whatever it is the eggheads think will clear out the storm faster. And besides, it's not like it can be that dangerous, right? Right? (0/10 Progress. Gains +1 every five turns from mining done by the Dwellers.)

[] Basic Production: Production of various goods is another bottleneck in getting the Storm Cleaver built. Vera looks at him and he shrugs, saying its as good a name as any other for the device that's being worked on. At any rate, the eggheads need someone skilled in taking the materials being brought up from below and turning it into properly usable components and such for the build. There's a manufacturing wing to this place and it's got a few folks in it but not all of them are familiar with how to make components at a reasonable speed. Zayden might be able to help out here. (3/40 Progress. Passively gains +1 each turn from manufacturing crews. Capped by Common Materials Mining.)

[] Advanced Forging: A great many things are needed to put together the Storm Cleaver, not the least of which is the instrumentation. This is fiddly and they're in dire need of someone who has actual experience in building something that can withstand the might of the storm above while remaining stable in its flight path. Zayden… Doesn't really know how to do the latter but there's a team put together working on it and he can still contribute by following along with their instructions. (3/20 Progress. Passively gains +1 every second turn.)

[] Extreme Safety Measures: Some of the more important elements down in the mines that the eggheads are in need of are also the ones most likely to give someone a horrific illness if they're exposed to it. So to mitigate that or even completely eliminate the risks involved a number of proposals have been put forth to help deal with it. Zayden's not aware of any of these. He's just here to help produce the stuff. (0/20 Progress. Passively gains +1 every three turns.)

[] Basic Brewing: Unfortunately, to Zayden's extreme frustration, what he's being asked to brew is NOT safe for consumption by any being he knows of. No, this is, in effect, rocket fuel of a sort. A highly energetic and flammable substance meant to propel the Storm Cleaver into the upper atmosphere where it can do… Whatever it is it's going to do. Which means he can not drink it. It is… Enraging for him to say the least. (4/20 Progress. Passively gains +1 every second turn.)

Work isn't all there is, however. There's also socializing to do! Pick one.

[] Vera has sat down for a rare moment of true relaxation for her. There's no device in front of her, no list of tasks, nothing. Just her, a cup of something, and the chair she's sitting in. Maybe she'd like some conversation?

[BLOCKED] Sparkling is in the middle of something and left without much explanation other than 'learning how to chemicals.'

[] Delilah is feeding some materials into the thing you now recognize as a somewhat cludged together still. You think they're experimenting in an effort to make some kind of booze for you. That's nice but… Dangerous. Might want to step in.

[] Cludge together something to recharge that battery! The radio WILL scream again!

BOOZE!

Update 9: We've Returned (For Realsies This Time)
Sorry for taking so long on this one! Got distracted with other stuff including some other writing projects I'm still pecking away at… And trying to learn Godot… And doing a bunch of art… And just life in general I suppose. Anyhow, we're back.

=====

"Ye've been doing what?" Zayden asked dumbly, looking up at Vera from where he'd been strapping his boots on.

"Coordinating a large group of people to start work on a bunch of different projects." Vera shrugged her shoulders, looking down at a piece of paper with a scowl. "Wasn't easy, I can tell you that much. I had to cash in a lot of the favors I've built up doing all of that cleaning and delivery work for other people to pull it off."

"Right." The dwarf drawled out, refocusing on his boots. Scoffing, he noted that one of the straps was looser than normal. Probably due for a replacement at some point given how worn out the whole thing was looking. No clue when he'd be able to get a good one either considering the dwarf who made this was…

Zayden paused and tried to think of a nice way of saying 'rendered unto dust by the immense fuck-up and greed of stupid bastard with less brains than a drowning man has air.' Giving up, he shrugged and figured that was a good way of thinking of things. "So, ye seen Sparkling around at all?" Zayden called over his shoulder, moving on to the other boot.

"Yeah, she's been… Around." Vera trailed off. "I think she might have done something a little… Concerning."

"Concerning how?"

"Well…" Vera looked over to a corner piled up with what had once been a batch of chemical supplies. Zayden's own gaze wandered over and his eyebrows shot up as he saw the mass of multi-hued crystals growing there. "Concerning as in I think she may have just sort of… made some of those rarer elements the scientists need."

"...How." Zayden asked quietly.

"You're the dwarf who made an infinite alcohol engine and you're baffled by that of all things?" Vera looked at him with a confused expression.

"Drunk me knows how to make a physics defying still, sober me doesn't." Zayden countered.

"Fair enough." Vera shrugged again. "Well, I know you're probably busy today so I'll let you get to it."

Zayden nodded and walked out of the room with a wave. Long day ahead of him he figured. Least there'd probably be a drink at the end of it all for him.

(Several projects have shot ahead by some progress as Vera's efforts have begun to pay off!)

Rare Mining

Tink. Tink tink tink. The sound of the slow moving cart behind him, burdened with its load of crystalline materials, echoed throughout the tunnels. Obtaining these particular bits of minerals had proven to be… Challenging for the dwarf, he had to admit that if just in the privacy of his own mind. When he'd been told that the materials he was searching for were extremely reactive he'd initially thought to just sort of… Brush it off. Then someone had given him a demonstration using a small crystal sample and…

Well, he understood the need for caution after his vision came back. Three hours later. Through four solid panes of black glass. So he was taking all the due safety precautions he felt were necessary. Each crystal that he'd harvested had been plucked with the utmost of care, cautiously sequestered into a metal box lined with glass and filled with a strange, spongy substance. The tink sounds behind him were from those metal boxes all jostling together and even then it was a very muted noise given they were all strapped tightly together.

Zayden paused as he came across a sight that deeply concerned him. He'd been by this way, he knew he had, all of his instrumentation was telling him such. More to the point, so were all the little signs he'd carved for himself and his fellow miners down here. This should be the way back to the rest of the dig team.

Yet there was a floor to ceiling mass of rainbow crystals that said otherwise. This had been shown to him too, the propensity for unnaturally rapid growth. Apparently these things grew faster the more life was nearby to them, a major factor in just why they were so dangerous to mine out. Now it looks like his merely being down here in the mines had led to this particular batch growing in such a way as to block the path back out.

Sighing and wishing desperately he didn't have a four inch thick plate of glass in front of his face so he could rub his eyes in frustration, Zayden reached for the small pickax on his belt and began to gently, oh so gently, break away at the wall. This was gonna take some time...

(+2 Progress gained. Now at 2/10.)

Extreme Safety Measures

Zayden couldn't help but stare at the baffling sight before him. The line of pipes and tanks led towards a laboratory with a set of rather conspicuous scorch marks arrayed outside of it. A pungent, acrid stench wafted through the air. Worry crept up the dwarf's spine as he walked forwards hesitantly, concern as to what he might find inside that den. A hand reaches out and opens the thick metal door, the hinges screaming in his ears as he does so.

Inside there are more terrifying hints of what has transpired in this place. Crystalline formations dot the ceiling, ominous sparks of something fizzing between them. A shadow twitches out of sight amid a worrying puddle of a fluid that is almost certainly organic in nature. Runic circles, complicated mathematical formulae, and equipment he can't pretend to understand litter the cramped workspace. That so much of it is broken is but more reasons for him to grow more worried.

It is when he comes face to face with the one most responsible for this madness that Zayden feels his heart seize up in fear if just for a moment. Staring back at him, bags under her eyes, rings around the pupils that were not there before, is the steady gaze of someone far past the brink. Zayden stares back at Sparkling, unsure of what to do but certain that he does not wish to be here. Seconds pass and he feels his breath growing steadier as he realizes, with relief, that Sparkling is not… 'present' as it were. He can flee. Come back later when all of this has been cleaned up.

He takes a step backwards… Directly onto a glass beaker. The sound shatters the silence and Sparkling's madly staring eyes go wild as she rears back and lets out a nearly demonic whinny in response. Zayden did the only thing he could think of in that exact second. He threw himself bodily in the direction of the lab's only emergency exit.

He jumped out the window.

An hour later a very tired looking Sparkling would find him and apologize, explaining to him that she had been sleeping standing up and he had startled her and also she would very much appreciate his help in figuring out if the things she'd been working on would be safe to bring into the mines or not please and thank you.

The dwarf did so.

(+5 Progress gained as it turns out Sparkling has been… Busy, it turns out. Now at 5/20.)

Delilah's Brews

Delilah stared in worry and concern at the 'ingredients' that had been selected for use in this 'still.' Not knowing what would occur when they slotted them into the strange aperture at the top. Hesitantly, with no small amount of fear, they picked out a slice of some vegetable or another and contemplated it. Would this make a 'brew' that was acceptable for the stranger who had upended the underground with all the effort one would blink? Would it, as some claimed, poison him and take from him his very life? Delilah didn't know and this… This stayed their hands yet again.

Maybe it would be best to leave. To forget this foolish endeavor with knowledge gleaned from impatient alchemists and scientists and cooks. There was still mining to do, production work to take part in. Anything other than this avenue that so shook them to their core with fear that what they produced would be distasteful or, worse still, lethal to the one who had calmly strode into the darkness with nary a worry and returned with a bounty one alone should never be able to harvest. Maybe-

"Hello t' ye there, Delilah." A voice shook them from their thoughts and they whipped around, locking eyes with Zayden. His eyes rove down to the tray with the ingredients on it and narrow. A hand grabs a fruit, holding it up to the lights and twisting and turning it this way and that. "Hmmm. What's the flavor o' this kinda fruit? Not one I recognize…" The dwarf asks before shrugging and taking a small chunk of it and popping it into his mouth.

Silence as he chewed, savoring the flavor before nodding. "Aye, that'll work. Needs somethin' a might bit more sweet to balance that sourness out. Hmmm…" A hand strokes at his beard and he looks up at Delilah. "Y' wanna learn how t' brew? Can't exactly tend t' the still all day, too much work t' do y'know?"

Delilah nodded frantically. This… This was a mistake, they would soon come to learn. For a dwarf, even one who is not a professional brewer, knows more than a novice can ever hope to understand in a few short hours.

It was a full twenty hours later that Delilah stumbled back to the den they'd claimed and collapsed into the pile of pillows that was their bed. Their head hurt with the copious amounts of information that had been dumped into their skull.

Or maybe that was this 'hangover' from the 'moonshine' the dwarf had shared to help guide them in figuring out how to brew. One of the two.

(Delilah has learned how to brew! Next turn Zayden will have booze. Others have begun to learn from the Still's construction to make their own contributions to certain chemistry related projects.)

Update 10: Okay for real this time I swear (It'll probably be a month again I get distracted easy)
OCTOBER.

IS THE MONTH.

I GET REALLY CRAZY OBSESSED ABOUT ART AND A BUNCH OF OTHER THINGS AND I LOST TRACK OF TIME SO HERE WE FUCKIN' GO, WE'RE TOTALLY BACK (PROBABLY NOT WE'RE OFFICIALLY IN HOLIDAY MODE AND WORK IS BEING A BASTARD WEEEEEEEEEE)

also rolled a 2 so rare mining it is

=====

The dwarf sat on his ass staring at the still with a hand on his beard. It had been forty-seven minutes since he'd last blinked. The blinking of a digital clock in the corner of his eyes confirmed this, the heads up display on his mining helmet letting him know… Well, a great many things. A spritz of mist onto his eyeballs nearly made him blink but he remained steadfast. Slowly, with the agony of a dwarf in desperate need of a proper drink filling the air, a drop of clear fluid dripped into the container below. He kept staring, only breaking his gaze when a rough shake on the shoulder snapped him out of it. He looked up into the concerned eyes of a dweller he did not recognize.

Right.

He was due down in the mining division wasn't he? With a sigh and a last, longing stare in the direction of the still, Zayden picked up his equipment and began to trundle towards the tunnels. He paid no heed to the strange reverence the dweller paid towards him nor the mutters from others he passed by. It was time for work. He could get a drink later.

He hoped.

Rare Mining

Singing rocks. It's something Zayden's honestly used to from his time in the mines. Not even just these particular mines, just mines in general. There's something about the topography and the galactic leylines or whatever nonsense of creation that makes 'singing rocks' one of the more common occurrences within the galaxy. Now, granted, the dwarf had to admit that five times out of six that was because the rocks had holes or divots in them and wind would rush by from high or low pressure areas making them 'sing' as it were. But some rocks really did just sing.

Right now, though, the thing that's worrying the dwarf as he carefully picks his way out of his current predicament, is that the song that's being sung is… Well… Dire. All miners know from the first time they head into a hole that this job might very well kill them. It is a known quantity, one that is planned for, adjusted for. You write a will, you leave everything to a trusted friend or family member, and you walk into the hole in the hopes that you don't die. Simple enough.

It's one thing to know this fact and accept it, however shaky that acceptance is.

It's another to hear the walls sing a fucking funeral dirge at you because that's what's happening right now. Zayden grunts through his teeth, trying not to let the frustration and, yes, despair show on his face. Trying to keep to his know how and his tools to get him out of this situation because the dig crew that is trapped with him certainly aren't helping. Not that he blames them. He's just up to his knees in crystals that keep growing on him. They're up to their waists.

Some young pup, panicking it would seem, had struck a crystal a particular way they shouldn't have and… Well… They'd reacted.

Badly.

Still, it could be far, far worse Zayden reckoned. They could've struck adamantium down here and… Well, you only get so much luck and Zayden's pretty sure he's out of 'escape an exploding planet in the nick of time' luck for one life time. So he carefully and casually chips away at the rocks around him, wearing them down until he can move again. Then turns and does the same for the dwellers behind him, casually moving the broken pieces to the overburdened ore cart.

The dwarf hopes that he can get back to mining regular minerals again soon. This magical crystal bullshit is for the birds, he figures.

(+2 Progress gained. The Crystals have begun to sing...)

Extreme Safety Measures

The first thing that greets Zayden as he steps into the lab is the sight of the massive crystalline apparatus that has consumed an entire wall. The second thing that greets him is the sight of the glowing sigils that have, apparently, grown from smaller crystal deposits inside of the apparatus. The third thing is a written note on plain paper. Picking it up and looking it over he discovers that it is a translation guide for the sigils. Nodding, he picks up another blank piece of paper left on the counter and-

Oh. It's just… The sigils on the wall but properly translated. The note reads:

'Hello to whoever picks this up! This is Sparkling Water here on her fourth consecutive day of absolutely no sleep! Having realized that the two people I brought in with me are very much wanting to go home I have decided to do all I can to help them. It's only right after all! If you're reading this then it means I have finally collapsed from exhaustion. I only hope I'm not dead because that would be a very sad way to end even with helping my new acquaintances. If it's one of you reading this I'm sorry I didn't call you friends it's just we haven't spoken very often.'

Zayden nods his head to the side, admitting the truth to that. His eyes pore over the note some more.

'...don't touch anything, it's very important not to touch ANYTHING in this room other than the pieces of paper! At least, not until you've read through them I mean.

Now, here's what I was trying to do. See, the crystals in the deeper part of the mines are all magical and all resonant with different things! Some resonant with songs, others lights, some of them even resonant with smells of all things! This is what makes collecting them so tricky and dangerous for anyone who doesn't have red hair, a beard, and a desire for 'a stiff drink' like Zayden. Trying to make any one solution to this problem is difficult as well because of the fact that even in a single category like light or sound there's still so many variations. Do you use a red light or a green light? Is it blinking lights that causes the growth or does that delay the growth? If so what frequency of pulses? All of these things and more must be taken into account.

But I'm making progress! I'm making a great deal of progress even! So if I'm not here could I please, please, please ask that you follow my instructions exactly as they are written. If you don't we could lose the whole school!

...Please don't tell anyone. And thank you for continuing my work!

Now, here's what you need to do… First, start by looking under the counter in front of you.'

A gauntlet-ed hand places the paper back down on the countertop before the dwarf bends just a touch and looks und-

He straightens up and stiffens, reading the note further.

'You'll need the book to continue my work properly! Take care and have fun!'

He looks back under the counter, eyes wide at the sight of the thing on the ground.

All.

Seventeen.

Thousand.

Pages of it.

There are cracks in the floor where it clearly fell at some point.

Taking a deep and shuddering breath, Zayden sits down on the floor and begins to read, cursing his beard that this is all happening without a proper drink in hand.

(+5 Progress gained. Sparkling's left some very, very, very detailed instructions apparently. Now at 10/20.)
----
Sparkling's Sparkling's Sparkling's Sparkling's Sparkling's Sparkling's-

The dwarf stumbled into the room, his eyes still wide and burning from having read so very, very many words. His vision swam with diagrams and charts, with numbers and peculiarities about minerals oh the minerals and their varieties within varieties! His hands ran through his beard, the sensation steadily grounding him back in reality away from… From… Magical Geometry.

A shudder ran through his stubborn frame. He couldn't get a drink. "Oh, hey!" A rather tired voice nonetheless echoed through the small room. His bleary eyes turned to look at the speaker and saw-

Sparkling.

And Sparkling.

And Sparkling.

And also Sparkling, and Sparkling, and Sparkling, and-

"Oh right." Zayden murmured. "Ye mentioned in yer notes that refraction was one o' th' risks of the thing yer… Yer workin' on in th' lab, aye?"

All seventeen variants of the pegasus nodded at him. They ran the gambit from standard yellow all the way to a color that hurt Zayden's eyes to look at. It was a color he'd heard spoke of from some of the crazier sorts of brewmasters. The color of Holy Inebriation, the state in which one was so drunk that all of space and time condensed to a pinpoint star of pain behind the eyes that annihilated the brain, a state in which one achieved true oneness with all creation for all creation spins in beauty and pain and only the truly, truly drunk can achieve it.

The most disturbing variation of Sparkling in the room wasn't that one though. That would be the one that-

Zayden looked away. The Color Of Your Own Death is not one someone wants to witness and knowing that the crystals in the lab could make you understand something like that was a bit too much for him to take sober like this. "So I found yer notes in the lab. They're ahhhh… Very detailed."

"Thanks!" Seventeen voices resounded back at him, the yellow pegasus and her refracted selves happily drinking in the praise. "I saw you and Vera doing so much to help out around and it didn't feel fair for me not to chip in."

The dwarf nodded in hesitant understanding. "A-aye. Though… I understand yer work's a wee bit on the dangerous side-"

"Oh it could turn this whole place into a brand new crater lake if we're not exceedingly careful about it!" Sparkling cheerfully interrupted. "It's why there's so many precautions in the labs these days! The storm came from somewhere after all."

He blinked at that news. "Ye… Ye mean to say the storm happened cause of someone messing with something?"

She shrugged. "Maybe? We're still not a hundred percent sure on where the storm came from but it's oats to oatmeal that it's from someone poking something they really shouldn't have." The cheerful voice sounded… Strangely upset in a way Zayden wasn't used to. "I really hope someone hasn't stolen a dragon's egg again. The last time someone did that it took a thousand years for it to calm down."

The dwarf nodded in complete understanding at that. The legendary ire of a drake, a mother drake at that, was not one he'd seen himself… But he'd seen the outcomes. Entire canyons had been melted by the-

"Wait." He stopped in his mental tracks. "Did… Did ye just imply that the entire planetary super hurricane is the result of one dragon?" He muttered in absolute horror, the notion striking down to his bones.

"Well possibly!" Sparkling's refracted selves chimed at him. "There's other things it could be too but there are records of a similar super hurricane like this in the past that happened because of someone stealing a dragon egg. But really, who'd be silly or mean enough to do something like that in this day and age?"

There was silence in the room as the dwarf stared at the pegasus in bafflement. "Wh-" He shook his head. No. Time for figuring that out later. Time for at least trying to be a person right now instead. "Well, uhhhh, apart from yer work how're ye holdin' up?"

"Oh I'm doing terribly." She admitted cheerfully. "I've been cooped up in this school with no way to fly until the storm flies over and I am starting to go stir crazy! The last time this happened was when I was buried alive trying to go cave diving with a dweller friend of mine."

The dwarf just stared in horror as she kept going, horrible tale after horrible tale. As all the nightmarish stories washed over him the dwarf found himself wondering just what force had cursed this planet that someone could go through this much and still be dealing with a planetary super hurricane that may or may not be caused by A Dragon.

He resolved to get drunk as soon as possible. He was far too sober for this shit.

(Zayden's conversed with Sparkling and been given a reminder of just how horribly colorful life in a cold and uncaring universe is!)
----
Drunk, Drunker, And Drunker Still

His boots stomped along the tiles all in a row, the stonework echoing with the haste of his motion. Eyes bloodshot and tired gazed out from atop an orange beard that had begun to fray, split ends and unkempt follicles spilling everywhere. This morning he swore he could feel the beginnings of internal calcification taking place within his fingers. More than likely he was imagining things but… Well. He would this deep into sobriety, wouldn't he?

A red stallion tried to talk to him, convince him that the still was producing a poisonous substance, that it had combusted when an errant spark had gone near to the area. Good. Meant the stuff was gonna be strong especially considering the stallion speaking to him had a great deal of his fur missing. Boots trod along tiles. Eyes bored into the distance as unwavering as the pick against the earth's unyielding presence.

The dwarf stopped before the still where sat a barrel he'd wheeled out there earlier. He knew that with this short a period of time that what was in the barrel would be barely enough for a drink or two. But that didn't matter.

Seven days.

He'd checked the time, finally, and it had been seven days without a proper drink. Hands shook as he grabbed a tankard from a pocket on his mining uniform. It had been with him since before the destruction of Kyrat-3. A gift for having gone above and beyond whilst mining, fighting a monster that had landed him in the hospital after it melted off most of his skin. A good gift for a good deed.

A glower was directed at the trembling limbs, forcing rigidity and stillness in them. He didn't want a single drop of this ambrosia wasted before it could pass his lips. The tankard was placed below the spout. The spout was opened. The liquid flowed from within and the smell was that of rich, proper alcohol. Something with a real kick, a real flavor.

It was no dwarven ale or elven wine but that didn't matter. What mattered was that it wasn't the weak moonshine he'd been drinking and that's all he cared about. He took a deep breath… And began to drink, savoring the taste and the sting as it passed his lips. As he drained the barrel dry he turned to look, seeing a small crowd had assembled to watch. Sparkling was there, having managed to pull herself together. Delilah stood watching in trepidation, likely fearful that their work on the still was subpar. He'd have to remind them to banish such thoughts from their mind for their work was well done given the lack of experience. Then his eyes met his fellow escape pod refugee.

Vera Tash looked back at him and walked forward. "So, Zayden… How're you feeling?"

And as the alcohol began to enter his bloodstream, as crystallized toxins in his body he didn't know were there began to be dissolved, the dwarf smiled.

And began to swear as his mental faculties returned in full.

He is Zayden Rahl.

And he is, yet again, stranded in an absolute murder blender of a situation because he is very strongly starting to believe that he is cursed.

DRUNK ZAYDEN HAS RETURNED. THE NATURAL ORDER IS RESTORED. SELECT THREE ACTIONS.

[] Common Mining: He's back in the saddle, his brains working proper again, and his liver's screaming for more. It's time to get to work. (10/40 Progress. Passively gains +1 each turn from Dwellers digging away on their own.)

[] Uncommon Mining: To think they're all so piddly about the stupid minerals down there. Time to show these pups how to dig! (9/25 Progress. Passively gains +1 every turn from Dwellers digging away on their own.)

[] Rare Mining: Oh no it's a bunch of magical rocks that sing, whatever shall he do? Break them and transport them, that's what. (4/10 Progress. Gains +1 every five turns from mining done by the Dwellers.)

[] Basic Production: HOW AIN'T HE ALREADY SOLVED THIS?! He's an engineer for crying out loud! (10/40 Progress. Passively gains +1 each turn from manufacturing crews. Capped by Common Materials Mining.)

[] Advanced Forging: Oh and don't get me started on this travesty! You'd think he'd have figured out how to slam together something that can withstand the rigors of a superhurricane even while sober but no! Fancy boy needs booze to do anything apparently! (7/20 Progress. Passively gains +1 every second turn.)

[] Extreme Safety Measures: The Book is still there but now he's drunk enough not to care about the existential horror! Good! (10/20 Progress. Passively gains +1 every three turns.)

[] Basic Brewing: SOLVE. THIS. PROBLEM. (CREATE A DWARVEN STILL. SOLVE CHEMISTRY.)

He's getting a lot of concerned looks from anyone not named Vera Tash. Bah! Better to set their minds at ease with a stern talking to! Pick one!

[] Vera is juggling a great deal of nonsense, papers strewn everywhere in her endless quest to manage up a solution to the collective problem known as 'not being in space.' Could use some company possibly.

[] Sparkling remains collapsed in her bed but the looks of concern she keeps shooting at Zayden are beginning to annoy him. He's finally drunk again! What's with the worry?

[] Delilah is poring over the remaining notes on brewing and keeps shooting furtive glances at Zayden as he walks through the halls. Could be the dweller is looking for pointers.

[] Seems Vera's found a battery somewhere and hooked it up to the radio. It's not of a quality that Zayden himself could produce but it's functional enough. Now if only he could get a signal on this stupid thing… Well, suppose that's what the dials and knobs and levers are for. Give 'em a twirl, let's see who's on.
