Yu-Gi-Oh Unbound Kingdom

Holy heck, Circle of the Fairies inheriting the Fog makes Synchro Summoning even better than expected. Though... I can't say I'm particularly happy with the Lackeys being allowed to just walk away; Was hoping to take them out completely over the course of two or three engagements apiece. Chasing them down if they decided not to continue attacking our occupied positions was part of Lukas's assignment after all. Should I specify annihilation tactics next time, since we can't really afford to let mooks wander around to retake positions or harry our units while we fight their boss?

That aside...

[x] Yes

We're certainly a step up in status and power than mere bandits, and she seems the type to value being on the winning side more than being loyal. It's legitimately in her best interests to swap over to our side, so I believe her offer genuine. Can she be trusted with anything more important than fighting alongside us? No, not yet. Might she betray us later on? There'd need to be a helluva incentive to do so, since as long as we're consistently winning and accruing power/allies, the downsides of betraying us outweigh most things she could be offered... And good 'ol human cynicism will make any enemies legitimately able to outbid us suspect, reducing the odds of betrayal further.

We would have to worry about minor bribes from our 'allies' to have her leak information and whatnot, but sensible caution should be enough to mitigate that, and we can earn her loyalty the slow way in the meantime.

Ah sorry I kind of got caught up in the absolute face roll and stopped viewing them as anything but comic relief, that and I took so long carving away at the update that I forgot the specifics. You're right though I should have carried out the vote as written, would you mind if I just say they got captured by Lukas off screen?

Works for me.

Chapter one Post Eight Part 1: A little Banter
You decide to trust Nina, for now at least. "Well then Nina what do you say we pay your former employer a visit?"

"It would be my pleasure. If you're good enough company I might even let you keep up with me" and with that she's off, back toward the enemy main camp, you quickly in tow.

Cycle 7-11
Lukas Makes contact with Mao

When Lukas arrives at Mao's fort he is surprised to find the doors open and the man himself there to greet him. "Ah if it isn't the forsaken bastard of house Von Eegir. Tell me what's it feel like lacking so much in your father's favor you must come to a distant land and steal nobility from a bandit?"

"I'm sure you expected that to hurt, maybe if Lydia were here you'd have earned a glare, but me? To me the trappings of nobility are nothing more than a burden, one that I must none the less relieve you of. First though you must tell me how you, o' Tyrant of Nowhere learned of our status and arrival?"

"How I learned of it? Try how everyone learned of it. Could be that ship of yours sprung a leak, could be the Shogunate or Barony want one less rival, hell it could be your oh so loving father just doesn't want to see your face ever again. I don't know who started the tune, but what I do know is everyone's singing about the shame of house Von Aegir! Enough about that though, I want to be amongst the first to forget your face!" With that declaration the ground begins to rumble as two large figures with clubs emerge behind Mao only to be overshadowed by an armor clad monstrosity.

Most men would flinch at the sight of such monsters, but Lukas just kneels causing Mao to erupt into laughter. "Hah caught up in their splendor, well I can see you've got more sense than most nobility, but it won't sa-"

"Quiet" Lukas barks in annoyance, much to Mao's confusion before taking an object out of his pack with each hand and places them on the ground. In an instant they begin glowing and recognition crosses Mao's face.

"Traps, you little son of a, get him" at Mao's command his two lesser brutes surge forward eager to take Lukas's head, but are intercepted by a pair of castle walls rising from the ground. With a quick strike the walls come down only to reveal Lukas a dozen feet away standing next to Summoned Skull and the figures of Archfiend Soldier and Keeper of Dragon Magic standing amongst the rubble.

"Thank you friends" Lukas says looking between his monsters "We've got all we need so feel free to let loose."

--------------------------------------------

Sorry for another half update. I get to the point where if I don't post something I worry I never will so these are more to keep me on track when I begin to feel a loss of momentum. I'm just coming off a cold so hopefully more regular, full updates, will resume shortly. I also wanted to highlight the effect of saboteur which allows you to trap enemy fortresses while they are still occupying them, just in case that wasn't clear.

Mao growls before drawing his blade and lunging at Lukas only to be met with the bone carapace of Summoned Skull. The monster lets loose a pained grunt before batting Mao away. Lava Battleguard looks to take the opportunity to strike, but is intercepted by Keeper of Dragon Magic while Archfiend Soldier Lays into Swamp Battleguard. The fight continues with Lukas's monsters running circles around Mao's until Battleguard King manages to get two savage blows on Keeper of Dragon Magic weakening the monster and forcing Lukas to throw it a health potion.

Unfortunately the potion creates another opening for Mao to strike and combat begins again in earnest. Still the momentum has shifted from a dance to a slugfest with blows being traded every which direction. Lukas starts getting desperate, if he hadn't layed down his castle walls earlier there's a real chance he would have lost and so he decides to use his secret weapon, Polymeriztation. Lukas orders his monsters back into formation and combines Keeper of Dragon Magic and Summoned Skull in to one, more refined form.

Archfiend's Manifestion is born in a clap of thunder and immediately sets to work on Swamp Battleguard, letting loose a chain of lightning which the green monster manages to narrowly avoid by throwing its club into the stream of lightning. Unfortunately for the Battleguard that leaves it open for a terrifying blow from Archfiend Soldier. Lava Battleguard tries to take revenge on Archfiend's Manifestation, but it doesn't go too well. From there resistance is mostly token as Archfiend's Manifestation cleans up Lava Battleguard and wounds the King.

Sensing the direction the tides are flowing Mao does the only sensible thing and bolts, only to be stopped by a new figure. Mao grins at the sight of this figure and begins "Nina, thank goodness you're here, I've softend them up for you!"

"Did you now? Well in that case I think I owe you this!" Says Nina as her hand connects with Mao's gut.

Mao wheezes as the air leaves him "Should have seen that coming" he chokes out before losing consciousness.

Lukas to his credit remains composed throughout the affair and even cracks a smile when he sees his sister running towards him completely winded. "Friend of yours" he asks.

"I hope so" replies Lydia "I don't think I could keep up with her if she was an enemy."

"Um guys we're not done yet" Nina interjects before pointing to Battleguard King whose looking at Mao intently. He then looks at the beaten and bruised forms of his subjects, before a look of disgust spreads across his face and he shakes his head before beginning to walk off.

Do you say anything to stop him

[ ] Yes
- [ ] If you want strength you'll find it with me.
- [ ] I can't just let a monster like you run free.
- [ ] Write in

[ ] No it's not worth the trouble.

Whatever your response there are other things you have to deal with, speaking of "Lukas where are the captives?"

Lukas hmms at your question before taking a second too long to look away from Nina "Oh them, I left George babysitting them. Though what are we going to do with them? The monsters will start waking up soon and when they do we might have another fight on our hands. Do we just let them free and hope they forget about their marshals or do we commit one of our own marshals to guard duty for the long term?"

"Well I've got part of a solution" says Nina "The Knights of Ruin have membership dues to cover circumstances like the one Mao finds himself in now, we could ransom him to build a jailhouse for the others, although it is a bit distasteful."

"Distasteful is right, he's a bandit, he belongs behind bars. What we get for him now he will take from us later at the edge of a knife" Lukas replies.

"Now I'd hate to see him go free too, but without the facilities to contain him and his monsters he'll eventually break out anyways, at least this way we can blunt the ire of the Knights of Ruin. At least this way we'll see some coin. Hey Nina, Mao's men, are they part of the Knights too?"

"Nope they're small fries through and through. No one will pay their ransom."

"What about the spoils of war" says Lukas "surely they could cover the cost of a jail fit for a monster."

"Yeah about that" Nina says "I was kind of going to ask that you invest that back in to the people of my camp. Yes they might have been the wives and children of bandits, but they didn't choose that lot and they'll need some way to survive on their own at least for a while. Unless of course you're willing to pardon their non marshal husbands and put them to work yourself. I know it's a big ask, but think of the message it will send about your compassion and mercy!"

You can already hear George's response in your head "Yes the message, the one where you show no regard for justice and safety."

What will you do with the prisoners?

[ ] Ransom Mao, imprison the others.

[ ] Use spoils of war to build prison.

[ ] Appoint Marshal babysitter.

[ ] Write in

What do you do with the non marshal bandits and their families?

[ ] Pardon and set up with spoils of war.

[ ] Pardon and set up with work.

[ ] Let go.

[ ] Write in

-------------------------------------------------

So just some notes the prisoner thing can be put off until another time by appointing babysitter. I'm not giving actual numbers on the spoils of war and ransom because 1 I don't have them and 2 I want this to be a character vote. Thanks for reading!

[x] Pardon and set up with work.

Only one I'm sure of right now. Do we have anyone we'd want to nudge Battleguard King towards?

Edit:
[X] Yes
- [X] If you want strength you'll find it with us

George might be a good fit for him.

[x] Ransom Mao, imprison the others.

I believe some of these smallfry could be made to work for us instead. Maybe we could pick off the salvagable ones after a while with the help of Nina and the other non-combatants.

Agreed on this...

The ransom will either bite us in the ass or have no consequences whatsoever, with no in between. I'm inclined to believe it's not worth the risk... in terms of prisoners, we simply do not have the capability to hold onto them right now, even if we build a prison and assign a Marshal as caretaker. The monsters are especially problematic; they were manageable because they were split up and we used tactics with specific matchups in mind. If they swarm a babysitter after they recover, there's jack shit we can do to prevent it. We have to either execute them, recruit them, or hand them off to another polity.

We can't really trust them if we recruit them, and it's going to be a bit of a problem from a reputation standpoint, so that's impractical.

Handing them to another polity would require escorting them, and would risk intervention by the mercenaries or result in the issues previously mentioned as to why the two nearest polities didn't deal with the bandits themselves, souring our reputation.

Execution, then, is the least risky and least rewarding of our available options.

[X] Prisoners: We can't afford to keep them around, so execution is the most practical option.

In regards to Battleguard King... we can't really afford to just leave it running around as a loose end, but we don't have a spare Marshall for it either.

[X] Yes
- [X] If you want strength you'll find it with us

We're definitely going to have to recruit someone it approves of before it gets annoyed at being benched...

Mao's Fate
So looks like the only real point of contention is what to do with Mao and his lackeys. Honestly I've been debating what to do. I don't want to flat out say no to an execution, but it would change the tone of the story. Marshals generally receive special treatment and killing one outside of necessity is rarely done. Peaking behind the curtain what this means is you don't really have to fear much for your own marshals lives in the vast majority of scenarios. Executing them would essentially flag you for real pvp instead of the gamey they always escape I originally had planned. This is a valid way for the story to go, but I just wanted to be clear about the repercussions. If you've ever played mount and blade warband, that's the general vibe I had planned with prison being the only semi permanant way to get rid of some one.

I'm willing to do a minor retcon and throw in another option. You set some one to guard them for a few days before a couple representatives of the Townless Guard shows up willing to take them off your hands sans the Battleguards who will be yours to keep, this solves things for the short term, but they will likely be used as bartering tools eventually. Basically the same as ransom, but taking the burden off you and letting you deal with a more friendly faction. They'll also take the lackeys if you want.

So we're doing the vote again.

[ ] Ransom

[ ] Prison

[ ] Execute

[x] Ransom Mao, keep the lackeys

Also if this is gonna be a vote, you might as well threadmark it to show up on alerts properly.

[X] Townless Guard

As long as they're out of our hair and we don't have to dedicate resources to keeping them loyal or contained...

Thanks for reading!
Well I think this has gone as far as its going to go. I can't think of any good compromise and normally that would come down to a coin flip, but honestly when its just two people any loss is going to feel more personal especially when this vote is such a long term affair. If I thought this was going to be anything, but the norm I would continue. The thing is we're not picking up any steam and it's too easy to imagine this repeating every update. I appreciate everyone that's read this, but especially TimEd and Ryumancer who have both stuck with me for so long. Seriously I think TimEd has seen me can around a half dozen quests and still follows me for some reason. I can only hope to continue to be so lucky.

My next quest will hopefully be out soon. I've tried to get a few three kingdom inspired quests of the ground to little success, but this one is going to be a lot more directly inspired while having a lot more fantasy elements. I hope to see you there
