Chapter One Post One: Choose your fighter!
Location
A.Z.
The Lands of Mahad, those who could perceive of such things call it the center of the world. It is a land of monsters and those who can control them, it is a land you are destined to conquer. At least that is what your father told you as he set you off on this expedition. You and two other marshals, humans who could control monsters, were to build a civilization worthy of the Von Aeger name.

The expedition was years in the making and preparations had been made to make sure you could quickly get set up with a manor and some farmland, with a little left over. For everything else though you were on your own. Still you were reasonably confident you could do it. Your father had taken the time to train you personally for what is to come and ready you for your duties. You also had reasonable experience as a marshal, having fought in a few Yami and Pandemonium incursions yourself, though some of the reports of the so called Virulent Nightmare had you worried. Scholars describe it as a plague effecting reality itself where death has no meaning, you're sure they exaggerate though.

There were also more human concerns to worry about. Yours is not the first expedition to set foot in the Lands of Mahad. Though most have seen little success, the Barony of Red Thorns has made quite a name for itself for its strong marshals and aggressive expansion, although that has been curtailed some by the Nightmare and frequent Pandamoneum incursions keeping them in their own borders. Then there is the Shien Shogunate with a collection of samurai of legendary prowess, but few in number. They've lost much to the Red Thorn and are hungry to take back what they can. Both will have to be managed carefully if you are to survive.

Then there are the neutral organizations. The Court of Cards is a likely ally devoted to staving off Pandemonium incursions. Although small it is rumored they have a secret weapon capable of massive destruction if ever unleashed. Next is the Clockwork Citadel, an organization trying to conquer monsters through invention, although most of their strongest inventions still require a marshal's energy to function. On the opposite end is the Citadel of Endymion, an organization attempting to peacefully coexisting with monsters. Both are potentially powerful allies, but to court one is likely to run afoul of the other.

It will take a deft hand to turn this monster infested land in to a glorious empire, but you are confident you can pull it off. You are ready, you are...

So when it was announced that she would be leading an expedition to the lands of Mahad she was overjoyed at the prospect.

Unsure of what to do he sent Lukas to live a life of seclusion so as not to reveal the dreadful secret. When word eventually got out Lukas's father decided to send him off to prove himself or bring misfortune somewhere else.

Chapter One Post Two: Land Ho!
You are Lydia Von Aeger and you have a continent to conquer. First though is tea of course, a nice calming chamomile accompanied by eggs and toast to round out your breakfast in your quarters. "Dear sister, I wish you would take this a bit more seriously. We've been at sea for months now and you still haven't even picked any of the agreed upon locations for our first settlement." Complains your brother Lukas from across the table.

You roll your eyes before countering "Yes brother I hear you, but your concerns are no more warranted than they were the last dozen times. I'm telling you any reports we currently have are years out of date and useless at this point. The Barony has been gracious enough to offer us use of their scouts and up to date information and I intend to use them."

At this Lukas pinches the bridge of his nose before continuing "And so the work of our scouts was for nothing? What message does that send to the men and women under your command? Also might I remind you that their offer is just as old as any information we have, for all we know the situation with the Barony has changed dramatically."

"Those under our command are trained and loyal, the fact that the same can not be said of the barony is my concern. To insult them by refusing their generosity has far greater implications than some hurt feelings."

"Those 'hurt feelings' as your put them aren't just petty grievances, they can blossom in to so much more! George talk some sense in to her!" Lukas says turning to the giant occupying the third seat at your table.

"There's nothing to talk about. The decision's been made, all that's left is to carry it out. Besides if I could talk our princess here out of anything she'd be married and we'd be at home in the capitol."

You can feel your cheeks puff up at George's unnecessary aside, but a win is a win and so you ignore it. "See Lukas George gets it! You're all here to see my plans through, not argue with them!"

"If you'd taken your own advice perhaps father wouldn't have sent you in to exile" mutters Lukas. 'Oh how dare he!' mustering all of your righteous fury, you're just about to lay into him when a knock on the door grabs all three of your attentions.

You quickly discard all inconvenient emotions and answer as if you weren't just about to wring your brother's neck. "What is it" you ask in a sing song voice.

"It's land my lady, we've spotted land! Port Diamant to be precise!"

'Well now things can finally get interesting' you think to yourself. "Thank you Gascard, you're dismissed" you respond, earning a yes my lady from your servant. Landfall would be soon and no doubt your host would be waiting for your arrival. You had a decision to make with regards to how you handled first impressions.

[ ] A show of force
- You are a marshal and a powerful one at that. You, your brother and your guard will be first off the ship monsters in tow, you need to show you are to be respected.

[ ] A show of trust
- Your host has been gracious in allowing you to use their dock and resources, perhaps a show of trust is in order. You and your entourage will be first off the boat, but your monsters will remain on board for now.

[ ] Just put on a show!
- A full royal procession is in order. Your servants will march out trumpets blaring as they make way for you and your entourage, monsters included. Let them think you some spoiled brat, it will give you all the advantage!

------------------------------------------------------------

Lukas's and George's stats and abilities will be posted tomorrow along with all their monsters. There will also be a non story vote for your stats and ability between this vote and the next. Sorry to delay them, but I just wanted to get something out.

Chapter One Post Three: A Long Awaited Meeting
"Lukas, George hurry up and get presentable, the monsters are to remain on the ship" at your declaration you notice this time it is George who is about to object before his shoulders slump and he thinks better of it. You have him trained so well, unlike Lucas who none the less seems relieved, you recall he'd always hated showing his monsters in public no matter how much he seemed to prefer their company. "Yes ma'am/Yes sister" they reply and leave to get ready.

Hours later you stand ready on deck with your entourage at your side, watching intently as the gangplank falls. You can't deny you're nervous, but you choke it back. You are half a world away from any you'd consider a confidant after all and can't afford any slip ups. As you march toward the gangplank you go through a checklist in your head; posture perfect, clothes impeccable and smile radiant, you're ready for anything.

From atop the gangplank you are greeted by the sight of your welcoming party, a royal procession headed by two knights clad in ornate armor, one male and on female. Both knights share similar features, bright red hair sits upon their heads while green eyes appraise you, his sharp and hers surprisingly warm. The man is glaring intensely, scrutinizing every noble or beggar alike as if they were master assassins in a way that reminds you of you George or your father's guards. That must make the woman your liaison then. Looking at her you notice an aura of warmth in stark contrast to her companion, as if she considered each of the assembled crowd of onlookers family. Still you can't be sure that warmth will be extended from you. You've seen people you'd consider saints cleave the head from their enemies shoulders after all.

Following protocol you wait until invited to disembark until a crier emerges from the procession "House Adalhard welcomes its most esteemed guests. May we meet in peace and prosperity." At that you disembark and begin your trek to meet them at the edge of the pier, all the while trying to comprehend the meaning of the baron's absence. Could he be ill or attending to other business, perhaps this was some kind of snub? No whoever these two knights were you could tell they were well renowned marshals from their bearing, after all hers was the posture belonging only to those with nothing to fear and you doubt her guard was any less skilled despite his posture. You searched your memory for any information you had on the Adalhard family and recall that lord Adalhard had a daughter around your age. That and her uncanny resemblance to the man that had been described left you with only one conclusion.

As you reach the end of the pier your crier awaits your response, but you decide to forgo his services instead deciding on a more personable response. "Well met Cassandra of house Adalhard, we humbly accept your gracious invitation." At your remark Cassandra smirks, seemingly amused by your breach of protocol.

"Well met indeed Lydia, if only my father were here to greet you properly" she says, gifting you permission to ask about the topic on your mind.

"Ah yes the baron, might I ask about his condition" you reply.

"He died in a recent Pandemonium incursion, the fiend's emperor itself was present. Thanks to his efforts the village survived even though he did not, but that was father for you, the bulwark of the nation."

'Well that changes things' you think to yourself, the key was to find out how much. "I'm sorry for your loss, by all accounts your father was a strong and generous man. Even though I never met him I know of his generosity first hand" you say hoping such generosity still stood in the face of a regime change.

"That you have and do not worry his decrees still stand. We will help you to the best of our abilities in locating a spot to settle. Unfortunately that help might be somewhat limited in our current state, with the ever present threat of Pandemonium, the Nightmare and other foreign agents. To that end I present my cousin Alexander" at that the man accompanying her steps forward.

"My name is Alexander Adalhard at your service. If you would follow me I will escort you to the war room where we may discuss the present situation."

You take a moment to mourn the lack of pleasantries before responding "Thank you Alexander that would be most appreciated."

It's Cassandra who responds "While I wish I could join you my duty never ends, I leave you in Alexander's capable hands" and with that she's gone along with the rest of the procession.

You can't help but notice Alexander taking a more relaxed posture at the sight of Cassandra leaving. "Well then let's get going" Alexander says before turning and walking away not waiting for your response. You give an annoyed huff and begin following him, earning a chuckle from both Lukas and George.

----------------------------------------------------------

Well its certainly been a while huh? I'll be honest nothing really happened to make me stop as much as I just got demoralized. I'm prone to self pity and was focused on the votes I didn't get instead of the votes I did. All I can say is I'm sorry and hope I'm lucky enough to earn back your readership if you've made it this far. Now for the actual vote for this post, Lydia's stats. The actual effects of the stats will be listed in the rules post. Ranks 1-60 only cost one point each while 61-80 cost two and 81-100 cost three, you have 300 points to spend enough to have 60 in every stat if you so desire. For reference 40 in a stat is average for a no name marshal. Here are three presets I've come up with, but feel free to make your own.

Oh and by the way after all this time I still haven't decided George's team, so as a thanks for giving me yet another chance I'll take suggestions. Note that just because a monster is strong doesn't mean it's good. A big monster might have few actions and low growth compared to some plucky mascot so don't worry too much about viability and just throw out whatever you feel like and I might pick it. George's and Lukas' stats are in the character section.

Chapter One Post Four: Sowing Seeds
The trip to the war room was mercifully short, not because of distance, but because of the breakneck pace Alexander insisted on. You didn't mind much as it stopped what would undoubtedly be an awkward silence from settling in. Between George who while loyal was frankly more than a bit boring and Lukas the brother you had met for the first time mere months ago who seemed to despise everything about nobility you'd hoped Alexander would be able to prove better company. Unfortunately that was not the case. It's not that Alexander was cold or combative as much as being personable just hadn't seemed to cross his mind.

"Well here we are" says Alexander as you reach the castle gates. "Now before we go inside I must warn you that-"

"You should warn her not to trust a damn thing the Barony tells her" comes a voice belonging to a man looking to be in his mid forties, dressed in traditional samurai garb. "Take heed lass, this whelp was about poison your ears with lies and slander as his kind often does. First it would be about us then the rest of their esteemed guests" the man emphasizes guests as if the word itself left a bitter taste on his tongue. What drew your attention more though were his companions they too were dressed as samurais, but they were far from human. Whatever he was here for the man had brought monsters.

Alexander however is not intimidated. "If I wanted to lower her opinion of you I would let you speak further, but as we are gracious hosts I'll spare the both of you. Lady Lydia this is Saito Honda leader of the Shien Shogunate and his son Satoshi Honda" at that a young man steps forward and bows. Unlike his father he was garbed in a simple navy kimono, but like his father he too was a marshal although his monsters were absent.

You can't deny a low opinion of the man, but you have more pressing concerns. You're about ready to dismiss the matter entirely in order to speed things up when George of all people speaks out "Are we to be unarmed as this old wolf openly bares his fangs?"

"Don't worry we have insurance that he won't start anything" Alexander says as another marshal in shinning armor approaches with his own monsters well in tow. "Lydia may I introduce you to the leader of the Townless Guard William Artfeld."

A smile plays upon the newcomer's lips as he speaks "Hello my lady, you have nothing to fear with me around, although from what I can sense of your magical prowess I doubt you'd have much to fear even without me."

"Enough with the theatrics" this time it's Lukas who butts in before addressing Alexander "We still haven't been told why these people are here."

"When the Shogunate heard of your arrival they demanded that they see you when you arrive. In the spirit of co-operation we allowed them here on the condition that they come unarmed. When that was denied we hired the Townless Guard for fear of any potential escalation of hostilities."

"Well then now that we're all acquainted lets go inside and begin talks" you say and motion for Alexander to once more take the lead.

Hours later and dozens of overt insults met with snide barbs has given you quite the headache. You knew your decision would have weight, but you didn't expect to be this political as every potential site had been struck down by one side or another until only two were left. Fist there was the Baronies pick, championed by Alexander of course, somewhere along their southern border.

"Considering your natural talents, the leyline situated here would be an ideal place to settle. Not only would it help you refine them, but it would also likely attract spellcasters both human and monster to your banner. That much power would form a strong bedrock for your colony."

At that Saito hrmphs in objection "Ah yes a Leyline brilliant choice, for the barony. They gain protection along their southern border and you get to be a lightning rod for Pandemonium incursions. Don't do it lass it's a fool's choice. You'd be better off in the central pass, plenty of good trade to be had with both the barony and us plus all the ore you could mine, you'll be swimming in the resources you need."

This time its Alexander that fires back "Your altruism is truly a sight to behold, put a neutral party between us and plant spies in the form of traders. I'm sure you can see they just want to keep an eye on you until they determine whether or not they'll stab you in the back."

"Gentlemen please, save this kind of undignified talk for the pubs and sake houses, not the presence of such an esteemed guest" Begins William "I think I have a solution that will make both sides happy and do the world a bit of good in the process."

"And what might that be" you ask relieved to see the two men cease their bickering.

"Well you see to the south-east there is a marshal known as Mao the Bandit King. He's well known far and wide as an absolute terror to the people of both the barony and shogunate. On top of that he's already got a sizeable fort that would make for a great starting point for a colony."

"What I don't get is why these bandits have been allowed to prosper" you ask.

At this Satoshi joins the conversation. "While it is true that all decent peoples would owe you for breaking up that racket, what Mr Artfeld fails to mention is the three marshals under Mao's command and Mao's ties with the Knights of Ruin an unscrupulous band of mercenaries that must be accounted for."

"I was getting to it" says William defensively "but yes Satoshi is right. The ugly truth is relations between the Barony and Shogunate are as you've probably noticed, strained. Committing troops to well just about anything non essential is effectively impossible for fear of a weakened border and anyone who makes an enemy of the Knights of Ruin is essentially handing their enemies a free contract from the Knights. You however are new and an unknown quantity. It is my hope that this and the favors you will be acruing will allow you to bring down Mao and escape repercussions."

Where will you settle

[ ] Southern Border
- While you have incredible power at your fingertips you lack the knowledge to wield it. Having a mages tower and potential coven would be imperative to your growth.

[ ] Central Pass
- Commodities equal trade and trade equals luxury. You have plenty of power already what you need is a good place for your city to grow. The central pass is the clear choice.

- A good deed is its own reward or so they say, you however want the fort and justice of course, but mostly the fort.

And if you don't go South East you could still bust Mao and sell the fort to one side or another for bonus goodwill and gold so secondary vote if you don't go South East...

Bust Mao

Feature Creep!
So my original plan was to just arbitrarily decide what monsters got when they level up based on how they were performing. Unfortunately this did not sate my need for crunch so I went and made a system where you get level up points every level that you can assign to stats and abilities. Of course not everyone is down to leveling up things manually so I'm putting it up for a vote assign points manually or let me arbitrarily decide how they're allocated for reference you'll start with 10 points per level that upgrades to 15 per level at level 4.

You will get 10 at level one and every monster has affinities for stats that determine how much they cost to update with an additional cumulative cost every time you spend points in the same attribute.

250 atk: affinity high 5 points, affinity medium 8 points, affinity low 10
250 def: affinity high 5 points, affinity medium 8 points, affinity low 10
150 health: affinity high 5 points, affinity medium 8 points, affinity low 10
1 ap: affinity high 10 points, affinity medium 13 points, affinity low 15
1 Speed: affinity high 7 points, affinity medium 10 points, affinity low 13

So the question is...

[ ] You spend all points

[ ] You spend points for main squad

[ ] I spend all points

Also bestiary has been updated.

Chapter One Post Five: Shopping
If you're choices are being set against Archfiend, being put smack dab in the middle of a cold war or pissing off a group of mercenaries, well you'd rather piss of the mercenaries. "I'll take care of Mao" you exclaim, much to William's and surprisingly Saito's delight.

"Well glad to see you have some backbone. First day here and you're already squaring off to show everybody who's boss. You have a conqueror's spirit, I look forward to testing it." With that Saito turns and walks out of the room, his monsters in lockstep. Satoshi utters a nice to meet you, then gives Alexander and William cordial nods.

"An unexpected outcome, but not an unwelcome one" says Alexander "While direct intervention is not something we can afford given the circumstances we can donate some equipment of significant value."

"That would be most welcome" you start before turning your attention to William "and what of you? Care to join us, this was you idea to begin with."

William takes a second to look bashful before responding "While I'd love to be the one to take care of Mao, unfortunately my situation is much the same as our hosts. The Knights of Ruin and the Townless Guard are let's say ideologically opposed and there are those within both our organizations that would want nothing more than full on war. Although it appears such a thing may be inevitable I won't be the one to spark it. I can however offer a reward in the form of a highly discounted contract with any of our members redeemable after Mao has been humbled."

'Well that's disappointing' you think to yourself. "I understand, politics can be quite limiting. Now Alexander I think I'll take you up on that offer. While I doubt Mao's underlings will prove too difficult its still three versus four in an entrenched position and I'd like something to even the odds."

Artifact
1x Bait Doll: Absorb the first status effect that would be inflicted upon each of your monsters. Costs 1 ap.
1x Big Bang Shot: Monsters on your team ignore enemy defense for one round. Costs 2 ap
1x Raregold Armor: For the duration of the engagement opponent's monsters must always attack your highest healh monster. Costs 2 ap

Well we're almost to the meat of the quest. Next update is the planning phase although I might post the battle map sooner along with the opponents starting positions and stats.

Clarifications and Intel
All items except for spells (unless you have the magus perk) are used by the marshal with their action points and yes Raregold Armor checks target for every attack. As for casting spells while we haven't officially picked our perk I kinda just assumed the mage build would take magus so you could cast spells up to level 4 yourself.

Since I was bored I decided to go ahead and give you the intel from the next update now.

Mao the Bandit King
Mao respects one thing and one thing only, power. His army of bandits contains enough marshals to threaten any of the major factions if unprepared, but their discipline and skill leave much to be desired, leaving none of note except Mao himself. He has a muscular frame with shaggy brown hair and brown eyes. He dresses in a nobles garb with some clear alterations to make it more practical for combat.

For reference low speed is 3, medium 5, fast is 7 and extremely fast is 10 per cycle. Also speed determines who moves first. If you're wondering where this is in the rule book it isn't. This system is constantly changing and editing a pdf and reposting each individual page is kind of a pain. So I'm putting it here and am just gonna staple it on to the rules post. I also don't know how many cycles it will be between posts, just gonna wing it.

Edit: Hmm that came off very flippant while I was going for casual. I really do appreciate the effort you both put in to posting and hope to make something worth it.

Chapter One Post Six: What's yours is mine!
You leave the armory with an ornate set of armor and two stones said to contain the spirit of viscous animals, good for marking targets for your monsters. You're confident you can put them to good use against Mao, speaking of Mao "Alexander are there reports of the makeup of Mao's forces?"

"Fortunately there are and they are quite extensive. It seems Mao prefers intimidation to fighting. Whenever he comes across another marshal he sees fit to flaunt the entirety of his forces, here are the reports."

Well you didn't expect the notes to be so thorough. By your estimation the only real threat was Mao, but father always taught you never to underestimate the quality of quantity. George was a known quantity that you could depend on, but Lukas you honestly had no clue. He was supposedly good with traps, from what you heard after the attempt on his life he became more than a little paranoid and took to the principles of defense quite handily. That penchant for self preservation could just as easily spell your doom as it could victory. Still him and George were all you had, something you'd have to remedy if you wanted to control any real amount of land.

"Thank you Alexander, you've been a great help" you say and are surprised by a seemingly genuine smile form the stoic man.

"You're quite welcome. May fortune favor you" says Alexander in return. After the exchange of pleasantries its back to the ship to check on your monsters. Even with your independent streak you were still a marshal after all and it just felt wrong to be apart from them for so long. Of course for you and George it was just a slight nagging feeling, but for Lukas, well the man looked visibly shaken. Maybe from now on it was best to keep him on assignments in close proximity with his monsters.

Speaking of monsters you were in sight of the boat and could just barely make out two aristocratic figures at the helm having tea, Fire Princess and Flame Ruler no doubt. You found yourself a little annoyed, not that they were above deck, but that they were having tea without you! You begin rushing to the ship in mostly exaggerated anger before you're stopped by a Will'o'Wisp. You have seconds to prepare for the coming inferno as it forms in to Infernal Flame Emperor. Of course with your magic prowess it was easy to stave off the blast, he wouldn't do it if he lacked faith in your abilities or so he says. "I see opulence hasn't dulled your abilities, nor has the trip over that accursed ocean dulled mine. Months spent in that form has nearly driven me mad. Tell me I will get a a chance to stretch my legs soon, a spar at the very least."

You're about ready to blow up at him in return when you feel a fiery hand on your shoulder, Flame Vixen though lacking the strength to form without the energy of your other monsters is still a calming presence none the less. "Yes my dear emperor" you say, a tinge of sarcasm reminding him of your relative stations. "More than a spar soon you shall get a chance to conquer as you wish." You feel the tinge of annoyance through your link, but it is quickly discarded in favor of excitement at the thrill of combat. An excitement that was admittedly contagious.

A week of walking later and it was time to take vengeance on Mao for all the evil he's done and most importantly for making you walk so far!

Plans

[ ] Take and Hold
- Lydia takes Camp 2 and holds off lackey 3, using Acid Rain if two or more hyena's are on their second life and then investigates ???. Lukas takes and fortifies camp 1 with Gift of the Mystical Elf and Castle Walls. George also goes to camp 1 and they tag in and out against the opponent's onslaught and then go on ahead to fight Mao.

[ ] Blitz
-Same as above but without investigating ???.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

So a couple of things to clarify, like in Falsebound Kingdom marshals and monsters come back after a little while, but here they will grant half experience. If I see deliberate farming it will be no experience. They will come back in 6 10 cycles, this is up for change and debate. Marshal speed is not only how fast a marshal moves, but when in the cycle they move, so for instance it takes both Lydia and lackey 3 three cycles to get to camp 2, but Lydia still gets there first. Finally is targeting priority. I'm not going to have you vote to focus down an opponent every combat, instead I will roll for who you targeted. If you want to see how it works I'll post in spoilers below.

Target priority

For opponent I roll a d10 with 1-3 being slot one, 4-6 being two, 7-9 being slot three and 10 being what I think would hurt most.

For players I roll a d10 with 1-2 being slot one, 3-4 being slot two, 5-6 being slot three and 7-10 being what I think would hurt the opponent the most.

Finally another vote as we are going in to combat we need to allocate level up points. Every monster starts at level one with 10 points, but I'm letting you choose one monster on every team to be level two, so have at it. If you don't feel like leveling them that's fine, I'm perfectly willing to do it.

Edit: Also who's getting what items?
