You That Remain

Here I was about to mindlessly vote when I remembered our GM is a troll.
next time try to use a color that is not impossible to parse through. bright red works better than that.

[X] Reflective Defense (Defensive, Deflect or parry your enemy's blows directly.)
[X] Disarming Shot (Neutral, Temporarily disable your enemy's offense.)

Apologies, was on my phone.

Get our bearings first before we do something we might regret.

I worry that we won't get a chance for many more moves if we don't act relatively quickly with the information we have... It may take multiple shots to take this down, even if they're placed into weak spots in the machinery. If we're also tiring, we probably can't afford to dodge for long.

The half-remembered sense of right and wrong and what should be means that we already have some bearings - they're just not quite calibrated. I can't for the life of me figure out what he means by "where was the guard" though, and I'm pretty sure that's the important clue from memory on how this should go.

Plus, if it does set off a bomb timer, we're probably okay as long as we get through the gate before it goes off - I get the feeling once we go through we won't be able to come back anyway.

[X] Disarming Shot (Neutral, Temporarily disable your enemy's offense.)
[X] Vicious Assault (Offensive, Unleash the power of your weapon upon the enemy.)

Theory stuff that came up in private messaging with the QM; (disclaimer: these are all just my guesses)

(Starts with him asking where I got the idea the guard is a machine)
The way that you've written it, you've made the guard seem mechanical. "Not a human, not the freckled guard he appears to be, this is an automaton with a blade, a machine bent on murder." Plus he deflected the shot, plus you've said his swings are predictable, which suggests that he may be working on an algorithm instead of adapting to our dodges.

Plus the so where was the guard, which suggests that there has to be a living being guarding this gate. There could possibly be another battle after this one - maybe the freckled guard is supposed to be remote controlling this machine (though I doubt it) and is nearby.

Judging by the fact that everything is half-remembered and not quite right, somehow we have to find the human guard in this automaton and fight that, since we remember fighting a human (evidence - expecting one shot to take this guard down, surprise upon it being deflected). The missed intermediary step somehow forces that reveal.

Alternately, the guard could just have been upgraded since last time we came through and we have to adapt to fight an automaton instead of a human.

Also, SpectralWaltz, can we keep theory questions and conversations in this thread? It doesn't feel fair for me to potentially get information that other players don't.

See... I'm not disagreeing with that. My main question is thus.

Why do you presume that Mechanical Motions necessarily equate to a Robot?

I mean in a loose sense you're quite right, but in some senses you are very badly wrong.
You have yet to grasp the true form of this reality.

One can train to the point where one's actions can seem mechanical, so there's that.

I didn't presume on the motions honestly mostly, it's the blocking a pistol shot that kind of tips me in that direction. The flat out denying the guard's seeming humanity and then calling him an automaton is what gave me the impression.

I'm completely okay with being wrong, thats the fun of theories. But without knowing how he blocked the shot, how can we rely on our weapon?

Oh my god it's the sword.
It's not the kid, it's the sword, isn't it.
It's creating an illusion and this isn't actually...

...shit I hate what you do to my head in these things Spectral

Gah I hate you and your invisible text and rrrrrgh

At least I was right about the illusion though?

Hisses echo throughout eternity and reach for your spine in a distorted semblance of my voice.

We have yet to grasp the true form of this reality... implying we are not seeing it right, or this isn't reality...

An Open and Closed Ring
[X] Disarming Shot (Neutral, Temporarily disable your enemy's offense.)
[X] Vicious Assault (Offensive, Unleash the power of your power of your weapon upon the enemy.)

You duck another slash and then change your course, pushing towards the guard rather than away in a sudden lunge. The sword is low and to one side and you grab at the guard's wrist. For an instant the limb in your grip is like iron and refuses to move no matter how you pull, but in the same instant it becomes hardened leather over softened flesh, exactly what you would expect to feel there, and then, it moves as you twist.
That's right... This is how it goes...
You wrench his arm up and then twist his hand, feeling the bones grind in ways they weren't supposed to as you ruin his grip. The sword falls and you bring your knee up, following through on your momentum to ram your knee into his gut, sending him sprawling with a gasp as his breath leaves his lungs in a sudden rush.
The gate is right there.
As you whirl, bringing your pistol to bear once more, a change comes over the guard again, and his quickness is beyond human once more. He ducks the shot and tucks into a forward roll as you reload, forcing you to leap as his leg lashes out, trying to trip you. A sharp kick to the head sends him rocking back again, but he grabs at his sword, stabbing at you.
No no no.
Pain blossoms in your side and you choke back a scream as the sword's tip is suddenly decorated with crimson. A shallow slash you're sure. Not Lethal you know, guards don't use poison..? You leap backwards, gaining ground again, breathing heavily from exertion and agony. The pain makes it hard to move, hard to think. But it isn't real.

All around the gate, you can see shadows encroaching, unfamiliar figures dancing in their blackness. You are Running out of time.
Halfway is still only halfway... So close, and yet so far...

Enemy reinforcements are about to come and we aren't even done with the fight. Time to skedaddle, especially with all that invisitext telling us about running out of time.

"guard" is beginning to sound like a thing

also I agree, discretion is the better part of valor and all

Well this seems like a fairly cut and dried vote.

Gotta say though, I'm a little surprised. Hm... I won't say if it's the right choice, but it feels like you might be making it for the wrong reasons~

You're making me doubt myself, but Elizabeth is bleeding and nearly worn out. The invisitext suggests that we have out opponent down to half health, but she'd still need to get in one to two more solid hits and the "guardsman" seems pretty adept at avoiding her main form of damage infliction. The "encroaching shadows" may or may not be hostile, but I'm not going to take that chance if we're having trouble with just one.
